Andrews to examine Wang on Tuesday

Peter Abraham
July
26

Chien-Ming Wang said this afternoon that he will travel to Alabama tomorrow to be examined by Dr. James Andrews on Tuesday.

Andrews, it seems, will have the final say as to whether Wang needs more rest or surgery. It was Andrews who performed shoulder surgery on Wang in 2001 when he was in the minor leagues. So if he needs it again, it would seem to make sense that he would stay there and get it done.

Obviously any sort of shoulder surgery would end his season. But don’t assume surgery. Brian Bruney and Damaso Marte both visited Andrews earlier this season and did not do under the knife.

Let’s hope and pray that it is just more rest! Surgery might make us do something stupid.

  2. Bret the Hitman

I’m crossing my fingers. Wang needs to return next year as the anchor of the middle of the rotation with Joba and Hughes in the 4-5. Then we can save money from having to pay Halladay or sign Bedard or Washburn. I want to the Yanks to have enough payroll space to sign Aroldis Chapman, Brandon Inge, Chone Figgins and Rafael Soriano as free agents.

  3. Brandon... I'M AWESOME ! BOSTON 8 NEW YORK 0 = 1st PLACE NYY

I don’t think Wang is gonna make it, the laws of average are not good in this one. How many teams can send more than 1 pitcher to the Dr. Korvorkian of arms and come out smiling.

  4. Giuseppe Franco

Any kind of major shoulder surgery would probably force Wang to miss some time next season, too.

It will be interesting to see if they acquire another pitcher this week who has at least another year on his contract.

If not, they’ll probably have to find another arm over the offseason.

  5. carl

Shut him down regardless imo. Let him rehab his shoulder, and his legs/feet.

Evidence that Gammons is not a Yankee basher:
From an ESPN column by P. Gammons:

“Yankees GM Brian Cashman argues that he doesn’t overvalue prospects, which is why he has Phil Hughes pitching like the American League’s best eighth-inning reliever, Melky Cabrera in center, Nick Swisher (obtained for Jeffrey Marquez, another pitcher in the package the Twins would’ve required for Johan Santana) in right and CC Sabathia on the mound, all in lieu of Santana. “

interesting trivia question on a HOF Sunday:

ummm… not sure Carl. It was the Aflac question on the D’Backs Extra Innings broadcast.

  18. Patrick the Prospect Hugger

Vrsce, so true what Cashman says.

If we had traded for Santana it would have cost Hughes, Melky, Marquez and probably another prospect. The Yanks also would not have signed Sabathia.

Looking back, I’m glad the Yanks laid off Santana, there’s no doubt in my mind they made the right call.

  19. Michele

Honestly, I don’t think it matters much. Sure, surgery would make him gone for this season (& still a big question mark regarding next yr). More rest just means we will be able to try him out sooner. OK, Bruney & Marte did not get surgery. From what I remember, Bruney came back prematurely after rest & rehab, & it was determined he still wasn’t ready then. Marte has been resting & rehabbing this whole season so far … since the 1st month (& when he WAS deemed OK last season, he really didn’t help the team).
Basically, if he didn’t need surgery, we’d just have him back sooner, meaning 1 less starter needed then, whenever. I don’t see his presence as HELPING the team this season.

  20. m

It’s not that Gammons bashes the Yankees, it’s that he constantly pimps the Red Sox and puts their prospects in the HOF.

He can’t even have a conversation on tv without bringing the Red Sox into it.

all three guys played for nine different teams. (checked out baseball reference)

    Goose and Ricky and ?

the last guy didn’t make the majors until he was 29 – pitched until he was 49.

  24. Betsy

I’ve been catching up on the game – did Joe leave Phl in too long? Should we be concerned that he’s overusing Phil…….and worse, letting him pitch when he’s tired? Phil is not a reliever – hasn’t been trained as one -and the Yankees need to be careful. Odd that there doesn’t appear to be the same rules with Phil that there were with Joba.

  25. Bret the Hitman

I really hope the Dodgers get Cliff Lee and VMart. I will be happy for Torre and even happier that Toronto’s market for Halladay shrinks even if only by 1 team.

  36. Pat M....

Aging has certain benefits ……GB would have nailed the 3 much faster than I did…..DT, your clue saved use many brain cells and much time….

  37. Trevor

Torre was the reason for the Joba Rules. I think the Yankees trust Girardi a bit more in not over using someone. So no Phil Hughes Rules. but I just would have went with Bruney in the 8th. Who has looked good lately.

  38. Dr. Cox

The only thing I dont get about the Hughes/Joba Starter vs. Reliever Debate is that we do NEED capable pitchers to actually pitch out of the bullpen. Like, it HAS to happen.

Who are we going to go with if Hughes is taken out of the Bullpen?? We simple don’t have anyone else and the market is slim pickens.

If this year, and baseball in general, has shown anything its that a solid bullpen can be the keys to success or the pitchfork of a downfall.

Its a great, great debate…but just remember that bullpen arms don’t just grow on trees,

  39. m

Hughes issued his first walk as a reliever today, and gave up a hit to a guy who battled the whole at-bat. No big deal.

  40. Tom in N.J.

    AH! stupid knucleballer!

  41. Pat M....

Rebecca. I just read your daily column…..And I agree with you, they’ll call up Jackson to spell Gardner and his role on the club….

  42. SJ44

    Betsy,

he didn’t leave in to long and there is nothing to worry about. Phil is fine.

Hrs in the bullpen for a reason. It’s to get outs and pitch. Both of which he has done very well.

    He’s not being overused.

If NYY is serious about bringing in a center fielder not named Austin Jackson, then, right now Pena is the best option, unless they wait for Kotsay to clear the Boston books about 6 days. If that or a trade doesn’t happen, then the only option left is Colin Curtis. Kevin Russo is what they are hoping that Pena will become. He has a few games in the corner, so, right now, his bat is a plus, but his defense lags.

Now is when they could have used Todd Linden to play center field.

  44. GreenBeret7

Brandon, do you remember my telling you that KC needs to think about moving Tony Pena, Jr. to the mound?

  45. Bad Scooter

Lets try this again. To all that complain about the roster and who the 23rd, 24th and 25th men are and who is out in the bullpen, take a look at ESPN Classic right now. There’s a Yanks-A’s game from May of 1991 on, the one where Rickey breaks Lou Brock’s career record for SB’s. The roster back then was real, real bad. Just wow. And imagine I used to watch as many of these games on MSG back then as I could. Matt Nokes, Kevin Maas, Alvaro Espinosa, Randy Velarde, Tim Leary, Mel Hall, Roberto Kelly, Rich Monteleone, etc. Could you imagine a Lohud blog back then? Congrats to all of us who survived this period!

  46. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Montero Fanaticus Primus

Pat M: I’m going to have something cool within the next couple of days…maybe tonight depending on how un-lazy I feel. Keep an eye out!

  47. Cash is King

I don’t think Kotsay can play CF any longer. At least not effectively.

If an outfielder is pulled from the SWB tonight then that might indicate which player will be in Tampa tomorrow.

  48. SJ44

Hughes is in the bullpen for the rest of the year.

    They aren’t messing with success.

  49. DT - OPPC member (blood type - Positive)

“Aging has certain benefits ……GB would have nailed the 3 much faster than I did…..DT, your clue saved use many brain cells and much time….”

LOL…. I think GB is on great grandkid diaper duty today. ;-)

I looked up Satchel Paige since he was before my time.
Amazing – he pitched in the Majors from 1948-1953. (ages 41-46)
    BUT
he came back and started a game in 1965 at the age of 58!!!
Pitched 3 innings of shutout one-hit ball against the Red Sox. (only hit was a double by Yaz)

  50. Pat M....

    Bedard back on the dl….

  51. Betsy

Trevor, thanks….but I wonder if Girardi can be trusted not to overuse Phil. I don’t like pitching anyone who’s tired – pitching while tired can increase the likelihood of injury. Now I didn’t watch the game obviously, so I’m going by comments made in the game thread. I wouldn’t pitch Phil tomorrow or Tuesday……Hopefully AJ can give us 7 strong, but either way, Joe will have to find someone else to trust besides Phil.

Aceves is slumping a bit and so is Coke – besides the HR today, didn’t he give one up against the O’s (or was it the Tigers, I forget)?

  52. BJK

8th inning was a tough call.

Hughes in the 7th was absolutely the right move against the meat of the lineup.

But he threw 20 pitches, which makes the 8th a rough call.

Bruney threw a good inning yesterday, but that appearance was not protecting a lead. The two outings before that, he gave up a total of 3 HRs.

The eighth inning was the difference between a series split and a series win. If Bruney starts the 8th and gets into trouble, Girardi really has nowhere to go with Aceves unavail today.

Can’t fault him for trying to get a couple more outs out of Hughes.

  53. Patrick the Prospect Hugger

    “He’s not being overused.”

I’m glad Torre isn’t the coach right now. Part of the reason we had the infamous “Joba rules” was because of Torre’s deserved reputation of abusing relief pitchers. I think Cashman trusts Girardi to use Hughes properly and because of that trust we see Hughes more often.

Girardi has done a good job of not overusing pitchers. I wish he’d use Melancon more often but I can’t complain much about how he’s managed the pen. The results speak for themselves.

Oh, OK, Maine. Thanks. wasn’t aware of any leg issues with Kotsay. I knew that he had occassional back issues. He could have been a fine ball payer without the injuries. Outstanding defensive player in all of the outfield and first base positions.

    Sabathia vs Kazmir

    Chamberlain vs Garza

    This should be fun.

  65. Betsy

Ok, SJ – thanks. I got a bit panicky reading some of the posts in the game thread.

Bedard on the DL? Well, there goes another possible pitching option. For a team as good as the Yankees, they have some serious needs: SP, OFer/CF, possibly a bullpen arm.

Tough schedule coming up …..in fact, I think the rest of the year isn’t so hot, whatwith several West Coast trips.

  66. SJ44

Girardi manages a pen better than Torre did in his last 5 years at the helm. Nobody is overused.

Hughes is not a piece of fine china. He’s a pitcher and he’s going to pitch.

Right now, he’s one of the most important guys on the team.

Girardi knows what he is doing.
