correction-Igawa gave up 9 runs on 11 hits in 5 innings....and it took him 119 pitches to do that.

Welllll, just got back from the swb yankees-mudhens game in Toledo...i was reminded of one thing...Kei Igawa couldnt even pitch to little leaguers and be successful...he gave up 10 runs...5 in the first inning. Ajax didnt play not sure why, and Ramiro Pena looked pretty good in center, made a nice diving catch and had a 2run homer to right.

randy

The RS shut him down only after it was obvious they had to do something.

He was on the DL, came back and still wasn't right.

Pro sports are littered with players like Wang.

It isn't just because they are mishandled. Pitching is very unkind to the human body.

You could make a list to infinity of players that for one reason or another had their career ended because of injury.

I know you don't like Cashman but you can't without a doubt say Wangs injury is on him.

Also he owes no explanation to us as fans what went on with how this was handled.

FWIW, and maybe this has been discussed; if so, apologies:

I would think Jackson would make some sense, given:

1) Only CF is Melky;
2) Heading to TB, who, if memory serves, was a very aggressive team on the bases (see: defense first);
3) The way the offense is performing, a defensive CF is more important and can be compensated for;
4) The pitchers presumably would vote for an OF, not another DH (see: Duncan).

maine yankee-

i think matsuzaka's case where he was strength tested shows there's no guarantee that a pitcher is going to be fixed right away. it's my understanding that his injury took place in the WBC tournament.

at least the red sox caught it and shut him down. with wang the yankees totally missed it and it strains credibility to think he shouldn't have been checked out before beginning throwing.

i looking at a very specific pointy in time and saying that wang was mishandled by the yankees.

that point in time was the first day of spring training when he began full workouts when he was injured. that was just wrong, and the yankees should have known he was injured.
they would have found out by simple strength testing.

it's logical to assume that there'd be weakness after 6 months of no activity so it's logical to order tests.

it didn't happen.

I've read a bunch of comments today about how Phil Coke has been pitching poorly including the home run today. I was listening to the game on radio today but apparently the home rum pitch was about hit off Ellis shoetops, it's just one of those situations where a hitter just does something special with a pitch.

Coke has given up runs in only 3 of his last 24 appearances, that isn't exactly chopped liver. In 15 of those games he did not allow a hit. Not everyone is Mo or Phil Hughes, but he certainly has been very good and should get even better with more experience since he has both the stuff and competitiveness to excel out there.

"The strength testing would have been a good idea, but I’m not totally sure it’s all Cashman’s fault being that he’s basically following doctors orders."

raymagnetic-

i find it odd that doctors would say do no strength testing to see is he was ok after 6 months of no activity so a serious injury would heal.

if a doctor or doctors gave that advice he or she was totally wrong and that's an issue that should be dealt with.

someone clearly made a mistake in not checking wang out before spring training after the long ordered non activity. it could be his doctor or it could be the yankees. i think it's important to never let this happen again.

the ball was dropped.

i think it was cashman simply because he's the man nowadays with the yankees. if it was someone else i'm open to hear the specifics. i think it'd be a great story for a reporter to look into because someone made the decision to let wang begin spring training when he was physically incapable of throwing normally.

Rebecca,

I don't see how a call-up would hurt Jackson. If he gets enough playing time, even if he does poorly, I think he will benefit.

Take Melky for example, they called him up when he CLEARLY wasn't ready and he failed in every respect. When he went back down to AAA he played A LOT better and came back the next year ready to contribute.

The only thing that I don't want to see happen is Jackson gets called up and sits on the bench for a week straight. If he does get called up I'd like Girardi to start him vs lefties and sub him in for defense.
