CC Sabathia came away a loser again as the Yankees were taken down by the Rays. The Yankees are 11-11 in his starts.

Chien-Ming Wang will undergo season-ending shoulder surgery today. This notebook also has updates on the trade deadline, Alfredo Aceves and Mark Teixeira.

Yes it would be wise to get another outfielder up. You want a late inning defensive replacement too for Swisher. Pena or Jackson.

  2. Cash is King July 29th, 2009 at 9:11 am

Cashman needs to shore up the pitching staff.

  3. SJ44 July 29th, 2009 at 9:11 am

A few items before I head to Chicago for the next 5 days…..

Anybody who doesn’t feel bad about Chien Ming Wang needs to have a heart transplant. Its ok to be a human being, even on the internet.

That could be a career ending, certainly a career alterning surgery. Just a terrible, terrible thing.

I think need to take a little deep breath after losses. The team isn’t going to play .800 ball the rest of the way. You are going to have clunkers along the way. Try not to make season ending predictions after losses. you look stupid.

I think the Yankees are going to make at least one, possibly two moves in the coming days. They need more pitching and there is pitching available. They also are, despite saying otherwise publicly, are one of the few teams that can take on ANY money. That will play a role in the next few days.

CC? I think there is too much angst about CC. As long as he is healthy, he will work through his issues. Pitching is like a golf swing. Occasionally, you get out of whack and need to tweak your mechanics. That’s what he will do during his side sessions.

  4. Bronx Born July 29th, 2009 at 9:15 am

Wang is a good man and teammate. It is really sad to see this happen to anybody let alone him. I am hopeful that this surgery and a good rehab program will get him on the mound again. Surgically, he is in the best of hands.

  5. Hokiehill July 29th, 2009 at 9:21 am

Agree with your entire post there SJ…gotta feel bad for Wang and wish him the best in recovery…the guy was huge for us over the past couple years and has done nothing to deserve his troubles.

It’s a shame to lose a game but it will happen (many more times this season). The good news about last night is that Papelbum blew the game for the Sux and we’re back to where we started with Tampa before the series began. I was encouraged when the Yankees came back and one against the A’s right after a loss and hope to see the same tonight.

I would think the news about Ace, even moreso than the news about Wang should give Cashman a little more motivation (not that he needed any) to get some pitching help…curious if Ace’s sore shoulder will make him focus more on starting pitching since Ace was one of the guys who could potentiall be stretched out if we picked up a reliever…

If they don’t have someone they feel comfortable bringing up from AAA to play some good D in the OF then they need to go get some one.

Chin up Yanks, start another win streak tonight!

There is no fan base that rips their players like the RS media/fans.They haven’t posted last night reaction to the fiasco, yet. It will be good,Papelbon is in the hot seat.

They are skewering Matsuzaka,It seems he’s not happy with the way the RS TRAIN HIM,AND HAS BEEN QUITE VOCAL.

The RS fans want to get their money back, and ship him back to Japan.

De Caster has a 11 game hitting streak.Just saying…he can play in the outfield as well..

  9. Bill July 29th, 2009 at 9:25 am

Good luck CMW. I think he’ll make it back. He’s still young, time is on his side. He may no longer be able to throw a 94 MPH sinker, maybe he’ll have to be a sinker, slider, change up pitcher. The NYY have given contracts to other guys (Lieber, Dotel) who were coming off surgery. CMW is a NYY, I think they’ll bring him back.

  10. Tom in N.J. July 29th, 2009 at 9:25 am

The lasting image I’ll have of Wang is the the look he had on his face after giving up that game-winning homer to Ryan Zimmerman a few years back. It was the look of a competitor who looked disgusted that he let his team down. Wang has been much maligned by some fans for what he wasn’t-a strike out pitcher, ‘not-an-ace’, ect. He was, however, a competitor who would try his damnedest to help his team win. Here’s hoping the that all goes well with his surgery and rehab and he’s back on the mound by this time next season.

  11. MaineYankee July 29th, 2009 at 9:27 am

As much as i enjoy it when Papelbon fails to close a game it is hard to put that loss on him.

Nick Green made two terrible plays that cost them the game.

If the RS continue to try to win with what they have they will come up short. They have holes to fill.

  12. SJ44 July 29th, 2009 at 9:28 am

Yankee fans, at least some of them, have reached Pre-2004 Red Sox fan idiocy.

Just read the game threads in here. One would think the Yankees were in last place reading last nights game thread.

You are going to have bad games. It always humors me how many fans think the Yankees are going to sweep every series and win every game.

Last nights game was EASY to forget because they played poorly. In the end, it was a no harm, no foul game because the Sox lost.

Its a LONG season and this is always a tough week for contending teams because of the trade deadline.

You guys thinking about that (at least the one’s rumored to be traded), as well as rosters being frozen a bit because teams are leery about using guys they are talking about trading. Its a weird week in that way.

You just keep on grinding, which the Yankees are doing, and things will be just fine.

Hopefully Chien-Ming Wang’s career won’t end up like Johnny Broaca’s. Broaca was an ace pitcher who came out of nowhere for the Yankees in the early 1930s and lit it up for two years before fizzling out (not, it should be said, due to injury).

  16. RonH July 29th, 2009 at 9:33 am

“As much as i enjoy it when Papelbon fails to close a game it is hard to put that loss on him.”

Maybe some. When you’re handed a 3 run lead and your first act is to walk the leadoff hitter, you’re asking for some trouble. And he did have an Omir Santos moment with that minor league 1B smacking a double. But the 2 plays by Green and their inexplicable indifference to baserunners was what did them in at the end.

Papelbon has put more baserunners on this year than in any other year he has been in the closers role. He’s really tiptoed around trouble all season. Sooner or later, it catches up with you.

That is why they may be unwilling to trade Bard. I think they see him as the replacement.

  22. Cash is King July 29th, 2009 at 9:48 am

Green didn’t help Paps last night, but as SJ44 stated, Paps has allowed a lot of baserunners this season and sooner or later, it was going to cost him.

  23. Robbykid July 29th, 2009 at 9:48 am

What outfield replacements are out there that would be a good fit for us? The one that comes to mind is Dejesus….

  24. Mike C. July 29th, 2009 at 9:49 am

I read in the Star Ledger today that the Yankees are interested in Josh Anderson who was DFA by the Tigers. He seems to be a GGBG clone capable of doing the same job.

  25. Russell NY July 29th, 2009 at 9:50 am

No biggie – Red Sox only have 3 years for another $51.55 million left on Dice-K after this season. That’s nothing :)

    Your right…….

  31. Stultus Magnus July 29th, 2009 at 9:55 am

Regarding Papelbon’s blown save, SJ and others are right, he’s been making saves scary for Sox fans this season, and that will catch up to you. He certainly has not dominated.

Wang has been one of my favorite Yankees since he came up. I hope we haven’t seen the last of him in a baseball uniform. If all goes well, I hope to see him this time next year, with the Yanks, back to form.

    Good luck, Wang

My favorite lines in the article This is getting DICEY.

~Since day 1 Matsuzaka has been a hired gun(mercenary, serving merely for wages)in the Boston clubhouse.

~He never seemed to be apart of the team-even on days he pitches.

~Now this hundred-million dollar arranged marriage is on the rocks and this might be a case of irreconcilable differences.

The Yankees may have a few things to workout, but they are a united team.

  33. Chevy July 29th, 2009 at 9:58 am

So when is Dice-K going to start going for Igawa’s minor league records?? LOL!! :)

  34. Doreen July 29th, 2009 at 10:00 am

The Red Sox, whether or not it’s through their own fault, seem to have a history of alienating or at least having issues with star players. Nomar. Pedro, apparently. Manny, goes without saying. Clemens and Damon on parting. Now Dice-K. It never ends well, and it never ends friendly.

  35. Irish Johnny July 29th, 2009 at 10:02 am

How come the national media never dumps on Theo for the Dice-K acquisition.

Gees, if this had happened to the Yankees or Mets or Dodgers, you would never hear the end of it.

Yet, the Theo gets to walk through the big fat rain storm, untouched.

i don’t think we need to trade for an of.
gardner will return.but we should bring up a cf,maybe ajax just to fill the time.

    we should concentrate on pitching.

    2 starters & maybe a pen arm or 1 starter & a pen arm.

i just don’t see us getting an of,2 sp & a pen arm.

    our sp debth concerns me.

    cc
    burnett
    pettitte

    joba is over 100 innings.

we have 3 pitchers plus joba.

we pulled ace out of the pen to start & now he is tired or hurt???

    bad move.

I feel sorry for Wang and many of his fans who were religiously following him..
As for Papelbon, he’s still one of the top closers in the league and a blown save here and there doesn’t mean much.. If this trend continues and he ends up blowing a few games down the stretch, its time for yankee fans to feel happy..

JB Cox per SWB (Not Retired Yet!)

Vice president of baseball operations Mark Newman is in town watching Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. I’m not sure how long he’ll be here, but I threw a few names at him while he was sitting in Dave Miley’s office this afternoon.

Has not officially retired, but he has gone home.
“He didn’t think he was back (to his pre-surgery form),”
Newman said. “We’re going to see how he feels in the offseason and make a final call.”

There was more sympathy than disappointment in Newman’s voice when he talked about Cox, who was never the same after Tommy John surgery.

“He was just tremedously frustrated with the way he was throwing,” Newman said.

  47. Chevy July 29th, 2009 at 10:13 am

Irish Johnny…..This is my favorite quote…

“What Matsuzaka did not say, of course, was that he showed up in camp this year looking like the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man.”

-I think we Yankee fans are slipping into the fatalist mentality once the sole provenance of those dirty RS fans pre-2004 as mentioned by SJ44.
It’s easy to do. We’re always waiting for the next 0-9 run.
Constant checking and rechecking of the standings ought to cure it.

-I’ll admit to full blown panic last night when it looked as if the RS were going to win that game and the Yankees had just handed Kazmir a victory on a shaky platter held by Swish.

-If *I’m* feeling the panic, imagine what FratBoy Theo’s feeling! I love it!

  49. vey July 29th, 2009 at 10:16 am

    FAN

You got the facts wrong. They played on ABC THE EXACT POLICE CALL FROM THE NEIGHBOR.

~SHE SAID ONE MAN LOOKED HISPANIC,AND SHE DIDN’T SEE THE OTHER,and they had suitcases.

~The police report says 2 black men, with backpacks. The police went looking for black men. That’s in the report from the officer.

To use Pasda’s phrase, Get it right!

Red Sux have a problem.Hope it last the rest of the season, causing Theo to be fired again.

  50. Jim July 29th, 2009 at 10:18 am

CMW was a go-to guy for 2+ years for the Yanks. During the regular season, he was pretty much an “automatic” for the team. In spite of this, he never seemed to get the love from the fans or the front office that I thought he’d earned. I keep reminding myself that until that fateful interleague game in where he messed up his foot (going from 1st to 3rd like a scrappy position player, no doubt…) he was 8-2 and seemingly as dominant a pitcher as he had been the previous two years (in each of which he had won 19 games). I really wish him the best, and hope that he is able to recover and make it back. It’ll be interesting to see what the front office does at arbitration.

On another point, we really have to keep perspective on the team–they are currently at the top of the division by 2.5 games, they lead MLB in many offensive categories, the pitching, for the most part, is carrying the load pretty well, the bullpen has been great recently, and they have the 2nd best record in the Majors. I think they can lose a game or two every once in a while without causing a widespread panic!

  51. Boston Dave 2.0 July 29th, 2009 at 10:19 am

It still seems like Toronto is demanding BOTH Hughes and Joba in a trade.

Considering either of them trumps Buchholz at this point in time, it’s just amazing that Toronto is giving such an unrealistic offer to the Yanks right now.

I’m not sure the Sox could match Hughes and Joba with their top 5-6 prospects (including, Buch, Bard and Kelly) yet I imagine if the Sox offer all 3 they get Halladay.

  52. bru July 29th, 2009 at 10:20 am

papelbon’s numbers are regressing over the last 3 years.

bard will take his spot imo in the future.

    his era,whip,baa have all declined.

his era is in line but all his other numbers tell the story.

    43 innings-39 hits compared to 2007 58.1-30 hits.

    his walks are way up.

    he is no mo.
not even on the same planet.

  53. Hokiehill July 29th, 2009 at 10:21 am

No one seemed to bite on Josh Anderson…I don’t know much about the guy but his numbers seem worth looking at from a “Gardner substitute” perspective. He also wouldn’t be a bad defensive option off the bench, post-Gardner’s return…since he was DFA’d I can’t imagine he would cost us much…

  54. RayVT July 29th, 2009 at 10:21 am

Boston has always been a them versus us mentality. If you are in their good graces on the team, then you are a god. If not you are trash & they let you know it.

It wasn’t just recently either. They did the same thing to Rice, Fred Lynn, Carlton Fisk, Mo Vaughn, & Wade Boggs.

Their fans/media remind me of some of the fringe posters here, attack dogs w/o a heart. The funny thing is that RSox fans are very knowledgeable for the most part, but seem to maintain a victims mentality. If they had Pavano, ESPN would have tried to void the FA signing. LOL!

    Let them eat beans!

  55. Boston Dave 2.0 July 29th, 2009 at 10:22 am

yet people still compare young closers to Mo much like the NBA started to do with Jordan.

It’s not just the sheer domination that makes Mo a legend. It’s that he did it for a LONG LONG time.

There will be many closers who come around throwing 99mph and striking guys out… but their arms won’t hold up to the test of time.

Mo is and will be the best for that reason.

  56. brent July 29th, 2009 at 10:26 am

Sure it’s one blown save, but anytime Papelbon blows a save is fun to watch.Coming from a team that’s pretty much not going to make post season.

“I’m not sure the Sox could match Hughes and Joba with their top 5-6 prospects (including, Buch, Bard and Kelly) yet I imagine if the Sox offer all 3 they get Halladay.”

There have been several reports that both Bard and Kelly are untouchable. If that really is the case then there is no way they get Halladay. Also I would likely not follow the Yankees anymore if they put Hughes and Joba in the same deal. No player is worth that haul except maybe Tim Lincecum/Albert Pujols.

  59. Lee23 July 29th, 2009 at 10:30 am

-Living in middle New England, I deal with RS fans daily. I’m going to have to disagree that most are knowledgeable. I think FEW are knowledgeable. MOST couldn’t tell you who the RS are playing today, never mind who the starting pitcher is.

-But they do love to wear those scrungy hats.

  60. bru July 29th, 2009 at 10:30 am

the rs can’t match joba & hughes & we would be insane to do it.

both are helping the ml club in a big way so a huge hole & i mean a huge one will be created.

we are not as good with halladay minus joba & hughes right now.
those are trades that hurt you.

we need a washburn, bannister & maybe a pen arm to add debth not to lose joba, hughes & more.

we should get a sp & a pen arm or 2 sp or if possible 2 sp & a pen arm.nothing crazy like lee or halladay.

i am not worried about trading minor leaguers for lee or halladay.i do it in a second.

what i do not do is trade joba & or hughes who are a huge part of our success not to mention we lose debth or gain none that we will need.

bring up ajax, trade for a few sp & call it a day.

“There have been several reports that both Bard and Kelly are untouchable. If that really is the case then there is no way they get Halladay. Also I would likely not follow the Yankees anymore if they put Hughes and Joba in the same deal.”

    ——-

The Yankees aren’t going to get fleeced like that.

I suppose the Sox are actually playing this smartly – except for leaking all of their trade proposals to the media (have they not learned yet??).

Whether it works or not, saying a player is untouchable seems to give him some sort of intrinsic value.

When you tell someone they cannot have something, if/when they get it, there is an extra sense of satisfaction.

If the Sox are perfectly willing to deal Bard/Kelly in the right deal, they aren’t hurting their chances by listing them as “untouchable”.

That doesn’t mean the Jays fall for it, but I bet there are plenty of Sox fans and/or Jays fans who didn’t even know who Casey Kelly was 2 weeks ago.

Now, because he is “untouchable”, it’s automatically assumed that he is a top tier prospect.

  64. vey July 29th, 2009 at 10:37 am

HANNAH,sure if you like men in make-up,!!

  65. bru July 29th, 2009 at 10:38 am

buchholz, lowrie & an of prospect will not get halladay when the jays say they wan’t 2 major leaguers in hughes & joba who are both dominating right now in the majors & in the al east.

buchholz is 25 yrs old next month & has done nothing in the majors consistently.
is lowrie batting .100 yet ?

it is nice to be able to have one of the best chances to get a halladay using our farm system when not long ago we had no chance.

  66. Hokiehill July 29th, 2009 at 10:38 am

I hate the guy, but Papelbum has been a solid closer for the Sox. But doing it for a couple of seasons was no where near enough for him to gripe about Mo getting the save in the allstar game last year and it was insane for anyone to compare the two from a career, or even potential career perspective. It’s just not reasonable for anyone to compare themselves, or to be compared to Rivera until they’ve got a complete career to look back on. On that same note, it’s just as insane for anyone (even Yankees fans) to deem someone “the next Mo” based on a limited sample size.

it would really be terrible if the Sox got Halladay, but if they are going to drastically overpay for the guy, I really hope the Yankees don’t feel obligated to try and match their offer with some ridiculous deal…

bard looks good so he is a nice piece but lowrie, kelly & the other prospects including buchholz have done nothing in the majors.

bard is also in the pen.
i just don’t see how the rs can top a joba, montero, ajax if we wanted to do it.

joba is ahead of any other pitcher that they have unless the rs use a lester wich they won’t,lowrie has done nothing, pena has looked ok for us,montero & ajax are doing well.

maybe a bard, buchholz, kelly, lowrie & more but none have proven anything in the majors except bard & that is a small sample.

the rs lost their sp debth & outside of becket & lester they are a disaster.

a once strength is a huge weakness.

we aren’t much better but our offense is better & we have a lot of kids coming up to help lately.

becket, lester & their pen are holding them together.
they need a lot of pitching & vat least one big bat.

getting both will cost them a ton of prospects.

Where has CC the dominator gone? This guy is not intimidating anyone.

Could there be something wrong with CC’s arm? We know how the yanks like to cenceal things.

    Honest mistake.
