No move today, Shelley tomorrow?

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Jul 30, 2009 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Another day, another short bench it seems.

All of the usual suspects played for Triple-A Scranton in the first game of their doubleheader today against Durham. However, Chad Jennings reports that Shelley Duncan is not playing in Game 2. Might this mean he will join the team in Chicago tomorrow?

I also feel it’s my duty to report that according to a White Sox press release, the Doobie Brothers will be performing the National Anthem on Sunday in Chicago. Seriously.

I just hope the guy with the really long hair is still with them. Loved that guy.

Pat_SimmonsUPDATE, 3:42 p.m.: Turns out (thanks, Gayle) that guy is named Pat Simmons and he is still with them! Excellent news. Found this photo, too.

I implore the White Sox to let the Doobies do China Grove at some point. Now that would be great.

Why would Shelley Duncan be called up? What possible need does this team have for yet another crappy fielding corner outfielder? It makes no sense whatsoever.

We don’t need Duncan, we already have Hinske. Unless, GI Joe wants a right-handed bat off the bench.

  17. Ed - Josh Anderson would be awesome July 30th, 2009 at 3:39 pm

“2:19pm: SI’s Jon Heyman says that in their initial conversation, the Mariners requested Joba Chamberlain or Phil Hughes for Washburn. That pair and other top Yankees prospects figure to be off limits, but Heyman still sees New York as the favorite. He notes that the Angels would have interest in bringing Washburn back, but the Mariners might balk at the same-division issue.”

Sorry, Washburn isn’t Tim Lincecum or Felix Montero. the Mariners GM seriously needs a smack to the head.

Sorry Pete, we’ve earned every right to be smug. After going through this ordeal in 2004 about the “biggest collapse in sports history” and “the first world championship in 86 years” and how this was such a “feel good story,” it’s good to see the truth come out. Our team was dragged through the mud with the whole Pettite, Giambi, Clemens, and A-Rod business in the last couple of years while the Red Sox have skated away from similar scrutiny. What goes around comes around. We all knew that David Ortiz’ sudden emergence was a little suspicious. This doesn’t invalidate their ‘04 and ‘07 titles because I’m sure that other teams in those playoffs had juicers. But let’s not make the ‘roid problem a Yankee problem. It’s an MLB problem and it also raises conflict of interest issues regarding the Mitchell Report.”
    Couldn’t agree more!
Two questions: 1) Where is John Henry’s twitter post now?
    2) Are the SAWX fans gonna stop screaming A-roid now?

Mariners thing is classic if true. Yankees looking for an additional starter, Washburn, so how would the Yankees move Joba or Hughes?? At least have it make sense. The Mariners just moved Clement, their catcher of the future in a deal, have them ask for Romine and McAllister for half a season of Washburn. At least Cashman could think about it.

Or Shelly Duncan could be getting a game off. Some speculated since Romine was out of Tampa’s lineup something could be up. Turns out it was just a day off.
Duncan solves 0 problems. You’re looking for someone to help replace Gardner’s speed and defense. and a right hand bat. Jackson is the only logical choice. I think he’ll get the call.

Can’t DFA someone that isn’t on the 40 man roster. You could release Duncan but not DFA him.

Anyways, why would you want to release him? He doesn’t take up a roster spot and he’ll always be in AAA in case a corner OF gets injured.

  58. The Phranchise July 30th, 2009 at 3:50 pm

If I were the Yankees you give Austin Jackson a quick look. He should be up the end of the year anyway so get him some at bats now. If they make the playoffs he could be a big bench piece. Has speed and athleticism. Imagine being able to pull Gardner and Jackson off the bench for speed and defense. If he doesn’t do much with his time now, just send him down realizing he may not be ready this year or to start next year. Can’t see how it hurts his development, he has been pretty consistent all year at AAA.

Leave Shelly alone! WOW! He is tearing the cover off the ball in AAA. He had a run with NYY a few years ago as a part-time player and looked great. He is a better fielder than Damon or Swish and he has an arm.

In case some of you are wondering, Shelly can hit a curve if it is moving towards him instead of away from him. So a LHP is going to have trouble. I certainly hope that AJ doesn’t try to pie Shelly, because AJ would end up on the DL from sheer Shelly exuberance.

He’s no all-star, but he would have been worth cash for what the Yankees need…

“The Kansas City Royals have acquired outfielder Josh Anderson from the Detroit Tigers for cash.

The trade was announced Thursday before Kansas City played the finale of a four-game series against the Baltimore Orioles.

The 26-year-old Anderson hit .242 with 16 RBIs and 13 stolen bases in 74 games with Detroit this year. He was designated for assignment by the Tigers on July 24 when Carlos Guillen was activated from the disabled list.

Anderson is a career .283 hitter with three homers and 39 RBIs with Houston, Atlanta and Detroit. He is expected to join the Royals on Friday in Tampa.”

Shelley Duncan is going to make ppl wish for Bubba Crosby. He is what he is a AAAA player, Bam Bam or Whiff Whiff. Helps in no way defensively and can’t hit in the ML level.

    Zip the lip Mediocre

You are ignoring my points completely. I don’t want Duncan up here but if Swisher/Damon goes down he’s the only choice.

Right now it’s Jackson’s turn and don’t even say “AAA UNTIL SEPTEMBER” he should get promoted right now.

  94. Hokiehill July 30th, 2009 at 4:01 pm

I like Duncan because he’s funny (anyone nick named Bam Bam has to be) but he’s not the answer for Gardner missing…he brings no speed and can’t play CF. He looks good for the CHW series because 3 of the 4 pitchers are leftys but after that he won’t be much of an upgrade. I can’t understand making a roster move like that if he’s not going to have more of an impact outside of the one series. Also, with him sitting out the second game, isn’t it just as likely that he will be traded?

  95. The Phranchise July 30th, 2009 at 4:02 pm

The Yankees are not moving AJax for Washburn. That means the Yankees have no outfield options next year, Matsui, Damon and Nady free agents and Ajax gone? So left with Melky Gardner and Swisher with no back up? That simply makes zero sense and the Yankees aren’t going to dish out two big contracts to replace those guys and pay Washburn for half a season.

I think if the Yankees make a move as has been stated it will be one involving the lesser guys like McAllister for some bullpen help, freeing up Aceves or Hughes to start at some point. That makes the most sense. If they could land a Frasor from Toronto or Downs, that definitely allows the Yankees to move one of those two guys from the pen. Then they can wait on a waiver wire pickup. Plus Washburn does not need to be moved by the deadline, with his salary he will clear waiver and probably one of a few pitchers who could do so. The price will come way down.

The fact that the Royals were able to get Anderson for cash tells me that the Yanks pursetrings are tight and Hal will not be opening them up anytime soon. Too bad – I realize the man has spent a lot of $$$, but IMO, he’s now being penny wise and pound foolish. The Yankees need to fix some holes in their team and it doesn’t seem as if Cash is being allowed any room. Is Cash willing to give up ANY prospect at this point?

I guess I don’t blame the Ms for asking (sort of like a plaintiff asking for $50 million from a jury, knowing he’s only going to get $20 million….and being fine with that), but on the other hand, it perhaps indicates that they have no intention of negotiating with the Yankees. They asked for Jackson last year and Washburn was a salary dump. Let’s face it – no team is going to be inclined to help the Yankees. I think it’s going to be very, very difficult for Cash to make a trade.

He’s been such a great player on a grand stage, but it’s his personality along with his ability that has made him an important part of this sport. I have enormous respect for David Ortiz. He’s conducted himself so beautifully off the field as well as on the field. I’m very proud of David Ortiz for a myriad of reasons. It’s everything about him. When you say `David Ortiz,’ the first thing I think is ‘Big Papi,’ and that’s a great compliment to him. He stands as a great symbol of the success of this sport — and a symbol for all the right reasons.”

Does anyone else hate going to a game at an opposing teams stadium and sitting next to the guy who knows EVERYTHING about baseball. I had to endure a man this weekend that insisted that everyone hitter/pitcher had bad numbers against the Rays. Could not stand it.

Hmm looks like Oakland will have to come back vs Papelbon

Make no mistake, the Red Sox win today will be trumpeted as a season defining moment on Baseball Tonight and in the Boston media.

Never mind that they struggled for a 2-2 split with an A’s team that is still the worst team in the league.

“I may be dating myself here, but I remember the Doobie Brothers on the show What’s Happenong when Rerun gets caught bootlegging the Doobie’s at a Jefferson High School concert.”

Not so much dating yourself as showing the rest of the board that you don’t bother reading other peoples’ posts.

“That, or Cashman realized that Anderson is not a good player. Fifth outfielder at best, more likely he’s a AAAA player.”

He could hit and field and run and throw, unfortunately KC beat Cashman to him.

Come on, pitch the 8th well As and let Pap only have a 1 run lead. He’ll blow it

  184. Max Power July 30th, 2009 at 4:33 pm

To think, at one point Oakland had both Jack Cust and Nick Swisher on their roster.

What a couple of one-dimensional lug nuts.

    lineup

    Jeter SS
    Damon LF
    Tex 1B
    A Rod 3B
    Posada C
    Cano DH
    Cabrera CF
    Hinske RF
    Ransom 2B

    Cano’s swollen ankle/calf.

Giving it a shot. Gotta be original. I have no interest submitting the same lineup as 10 other people.

Except for the fact that HGH has no effect on it’s users.

“He could hit and field and run and throw, unfortunately KC beat Cashman to him.”

He can field and run and throw, he can’t hit.

There are hundreds of players in baseball that can do what Anderson can do.

  189. Patrick the Prospect Hugger July 30th, 2009 at 4:34 pm

    “Are you serious? Why?!”

Well, he did just hit a 3 run homer to put Boston in the lead

  190. The Phranchise July 30th, 2009 at 4:40 pm

Anyone see Canseco claiming there is someone already in the HOF who used???? That would be a new twist. Who would that be …… Rickey????

  191. Patrick the Prospect Hugger July 30th, 2009 at 4:42 pm

Phranchise when did he say that? He was probably talking about Cal Ripken Jr.

  192. The Phranchise July 30th, 2009 at 4:45 pm

It’s on CNNSI today. If it were Cal baseball would be crippled. I could definitely see Rickey. I am not sure if Rickey was on Toronto when Canseco was as well. Just couldn’t think of anyone else off the top of my head recently that would make sense that Canseco would know.

  193. Patrick the Prospect Hugger July 30th, 2009 at 4:47 pm

Cal kind of makes sense, considering his record.

I really really hope it’s not him though, he’s one of my favorite players of all time.

Jeff Skunk Baxter is pictured. I met him in the 70′s at the Playboy club in NJ. This was before he got religion.
He was quite wasted the day I met him but a funny guy.

  195. MJR (Shut Up Steve Phillips) July 30th, 2009 at 7:00 pm

Is Washburn really worth a Joba or a Phil?

for another 2-3 years I suppose.

But Joba and/or Phil are finally coming to their own, and we have a solid rotation with CC/AJ for the next 5 years.

CC/AJ/Phil/Joba….FOR 5 YEARS. Think about that!

  196. jake July 31st, 2009 at 12:53 am

    1) Washburn is worth Austin Romine and Jeremy Bleich. Joba and Phil are already better than Washburn and Cashman would be insane to give up either of those guys for anyone right now.

    2) The best thing about the Doobie Brothers is that they named themselves after a drug. Gotta love it.

Silkworms work constantly to create the layers of their cocoons. It takes about two days for them to complete their job. Most silkworms raised on farms are not allowed to become adult moths, as silk farmers will harvest the silk from the cocoon. If they are left alone they will break the three and transform into a moth.

These points were illustrated best in Le Corbusier’s domestic architecture. Le Corbusier’s first attempt to deal with the problem of mass housing was Maisons Citrohan, designed in 1920 22. All parts of the house are united by a spatial continuum, while the open space created by the pilotis and the flat roof increase the otherwise small available area. The prototype of a single family unit, which was later modified to a module within a collective building, for example the basic units of the Immeuble villa (1922).

Versace showed off her trim and toned bikini body as she sunned herself on a sandy beach during her holiday to the Turks and Caicos Islands on Sunday. A lot of women who are nearing 60 years old would probably avoid a bikini especially in public, but with a toned body like that, why not show it off? two piece is, of course, by Versace and you can buy a bikini in the same print from the designer brand website now. Just click the link (right) and this bright blue beachwear can be yours.
