Another day, another short bench it seems.
All of the usual suspects played for Triple-A Scranton in the first game of their doubleheader today against Durham. However, Chad Jennings reports that Shelley Duncan is not playing in Game 2. Might this mean he will join the team in Chicago tomorrow?
I also feel it’s my duty to report that according to a White Sox press release, the Doobie Brothers will be performing the National Anthem on Sunday in Chicago. Seriously.
I just hope the guy with the really long hair is still with them. Loved that guy.
UPDATE, 3:42 p.m.: Turns out (thanks, Gayle) that guy is named Pat Simmons and he is still with them! Excellent news. Found this photo, too.
I implore the White Sox to let the Doobies do China Grove at some point. Now that would be great.
Why would Shelley Duncan be called up? What possible need does this team have for yet another crappy fielding corner outfielder? It makes no sense whatsoever.

Sorry Pete, we’ve earned every right to be smug. After going through this ordeal in 2004 about the “biggest collapse in sports history” and “the first world championship in 86 years” and how this was such a “feel good story,” it’s good to see the truth come out. Our team was dragged through the mud with the whole Pettite, Giambi, Clemens, and A-Rod business in the last couple of years while the Red Sox have skated away from similar scrutiny. What goes around comes around. We all knew that David Ortiz’ sudden emergence was a little suspicious. This doesn’t invalidate their ‘04 and ‘07 titles because I’m sure that other teams in those playoffs had juicers. But let’s not make the ‘roid problem a Yankee problem. It’s an MLB problem and it also raises conflict of interest issues regarding the Mitchell Report.”

If I were the Yankees you give Austin Jackson a quick look. He should be up the end of the year anyway so get him some at bats now. If they make the playoffs he could be a big bench piece. Has speed and athleticism. Imagine being able to pull Gardner and Jackson off the bench for speed and defense. If he doesn’t do much with his time now, just send him down realizing he may not be ready this year or to start next year. Can’t see how it hurts his development, he has been pretty consistent all year at AAA.

Leave Shelly alone! WOW! He is tearing the cover off the ball in AAA. He had a run with NYY a few years ago as a part-time player and looked great. He is a better fielder than Damon or Swish and he has an arm.
In case some of you are wondering, Shelly can hit a curve if it is moving towards him instead of away from him. So a LHP is going to have trouble. I certainly hope that AJ doesn’t try to pie Shelly, because AJ would end up on the DL from sheer Shelly exuberance.

Shelley Duncan is going to make ppl wish for Bubba Crosby. He is what he is a AAAA player, Bam Bam or Whiff Whiff. Helps in no way defensively and can’t hit in the ML level.

You are ignoring my points completely. I don’t want Duncan up here but if Swisher/Damon goes down he’s the only choice.
Right now it’s Jackson’s turn and don’t even say “AAA UNTIL SEPTEMBER” he should get promoted right now.
I like Duncan because he’s funny (anyone nick named Bam Bam has to be) but he’s not the answer for Gardner missing…he brings no speed and can’t play CF. He looks good for the CHW series because 3 of the 4 pitchers are leftys but after that he won’t be much of an upgrade. I can’t understand making a roster move like that if he’s not going to have more of an impact outside of the one series. Also, with him sitting out the second game, isn’t it just as likely that he will be traded?
The Yankees are not moving AJax for Washburn. That means the Yankees have no outfield options next year, Matsui, Damon and Nady free agents and Ajax gone? So left with Melky Gardner and Swisher with no back up? That simply makes zero sense and the Yankees aren’t going to dish out two big contracts to replace those guys and pay Washburn for half a season.
I think if the Yankees make a move as has been stated it will be one involving the lesser guys like McAllister for some bullpen help, freeing up Aceves or Hughes to start at some point. That makes the most sense. If they could land a Frasor from Toronto or Downs, that definitely allows the Yankees to move one of those two guys from the pen. Then they can wait on a waiver wire pickup. Plus Washburn does not need to be moved by the deadline, with his salary he will clear waiver and probably one of a few pitchers who could do so. The price will come way down.

The fact that the Royals were able to get Anderson for cash tells me that the Yanks pursetrings are tight and Hal will not be opening them up anytime soon. Too bad – I realize the man has spent a lot of $$$, but IMO, he’s now being penny wise and pound foolish. The Yankees need to fix some holes in their team and it doesn’t seem as if Cash is being allowed any room. Is Cash willing to give up ANY prospect at this point?
I guess I don’t blame the Ms for asking (sort of like a plaintiff asking for $50 million from a jury, knowing he’s only going to get $20 million….and being fine with that), but on the other hand, it perhaps indicates that they have no intention of negotiating with the Yankees. They asked for Jackson last year and Washburn was a salary dump. Let’s face it – no team is going to be inclined to help the Yankees. I think it’s going to be very, very difficult for Cash to make a trade.

When was the last time the Yanks tightened the purse strings or refused to make a trade to fill a huge need? I can’t remember, they are not a cheap team and that’s not going to change anytime soon.

It’s on CNNSI today. If it were Cal baseball would be crippled. I could definitely see Rickey. I am not sure if Rickey was on Toronto when Canseco was as well. Just couldn’t think of anyone else off the top of my head recently that would make sense that Canseco would know.

But Joba and/or Phil are finally coming to their own, and we have a solid rotation with CC/AJ for the next 5 years.
CC/AJ/Phil/Joba….FOR 5 YEARS. Think about that!
1) Washburn is worth Austin Romine and Jeremy Bleich. Joba and Phil are already better than Washburn and Cashman would be insane to give up either of those guys for anyone right now.
2) The best thing about the Doobie Brothers is that they named themselves after a drug. Gotta love it.
