The Melkman, love him, hate him, tolerate him, this year anyway, he has had a timely flair for the dramatic. He is better now than past, may he continue to progress.

Doreen -

I try to make sense once or twice a week - shame that I spent one of those opportunities on a Monday morning; doesn't bode well for the rest of the week.

As long as we're talking about the team taking fliers on pitchers - Mark Prior was just released by San Diego - sign him for the remainder of the season and next year as well and just let him rehab - maybe they catch some lightning with him. Though I doubt it.

I have more hope for Jason Hirsch the 27-year old the Yankees got from the Rox. He was a big prospect with Houston until he was traded for Jason Jennings a couple of years ago. Maybe getting out of Colorado Springs will help him bounce back to form?

And while I know this has nothing to do with the topic at hand - with Wang out until at least August of next season - I'm really hoping the Yankees make a hard play for Rich Harden this winter.

Your reasoning for why Ransom is still here is the best I've seen here. It seems to make sense, anyway. :)

Anyone see what Victor Martinez did for the Red Sox yesterday? Yes, it was against the Orioles, but, a career-high 5 hits. It also seems like "Yuck" is out of his slump.

I've always figured that this was going to be a back-and-forth run for the division, so I'm not overly upset that the lead is down to a half game. However, it is curious how the Yankees can play such crisp baseball and then such cr*p baseball in the span of a few games.

I guess they really did need the day off today.

One can only assume Ransom has amorous photos involving a major club official and livestock.

Would make more sense to have a potential power bat (Shelley Duncan) or defensive OF specialist than a second utility guy. I still think they should have jumped on one of the Andersons when they were on waivers.

Scranton has gotten good starts from a couple of journeymen the last two days. It may be that Mitre’s Wednesday start is a do-or-die situation.

The Yankees don't have the first crack at picking up players on waivers. It goes to the worst to first records of teams in that league.

I agree with you about the Andersons, but not on Duncan - if we learned anything last year it's that Shelley is not built to come off the bench and produce. He is a rythem hitter.

Players witha NTC can be put on waivers:

" A player with a no-trade clause who is claimed on Major League waivers must be pulled back if the player’s no-trade clause allows him to block a deal to the claiming club. However, the player may waive the no-trade clause and join the claiming club."

The NTC works the same with the waiver-wire as it does with regular, non-waiver, trades. The player can waive the NTC if he wants to.

Perhaps the Steinbrenners and Cashman wanted the players and front office personnel to relax and have a good laugh at the constant whining and ridiculous trade demands of the people on blogs and message boards.

No trades don't stop a player from being placed on waivers. A no trade and 10/5 protection just give them the right to refuse to go where they are assigned without their approval.
