  1. Cash is King

Cashman is not going to make a deal if he thinks the Yankees are overpaying and that it would hurt the Yankees in the long-term.

Hard to believe it’s been 30 years since Munson’s death. Always a hard day for the family I’m sure.

  3. 2009 Yankees

It’s truly a sad day in my life. I will be reliving that 1979 day all day today. Thurman was my hero, I wanted to catch just like him, and I enjoyed watching him play. It’s been 30 years and all I wanted was to have the Yankees play at home today and to honor our fallen captain. I didn’t think it was too much to ask for from the schedule makers.

Munson’s death hit hard. In some ways those 30 years have flown by, in others it seems such a short time ago.

  5. Bill

I remember where I was when I learned of Munson’s death. I was changing the oil in my 72 Ford (rust bucket!) when a friend came over and told me. I couldn’t believe it so I turned on the radio to hear the news.

The fact that everyone is wasting so much energy complaining about Ransom is hilarious. He is a back-up IF. If he is the reason for the 3 losses to the Sox, then everyone else is getting a pass.

He’s not the reason. Nor is Angel Berroa. Nor is Molina. It is the front-line starting nine. It is the rotation. It is the bullpen.

Complaining about the 25th man on the roster and blaming him is ludicrous.

It is A-Rod’s fault, Posada’s fault, Jeter’s fault, AJ’s fault, CC’s fault…wasting so much time critizing Cashman for Ransom is stupid.

Funny thing is…a few months ago..EVERYONE on this board was crying about Berroa and waiting breathlessly for Ransom’s return.

It is not about the 25th man…it is about the starters. Catch a clue, kids.

  7. Phil - not in any OPPC because clubs are for 9 year olds

The recent book about Munson is terrific.

Will Diana Munson be on hand today?

“Funny thing is…a few months ago..EVERYONE on this board was crying about Berroa and waiting breathlessly for Ransom’s return.”

    That is fact.

Something Pepitone said last night really captured the spirit of this blog. When all was going swimmingly for the Yankees in July, the majority of posters were in love with Casman and Girardi and all of the Yankee players. I am not saying ALL posters. I’m saying the majority. Now that the Yankees are in a mini (I hope it’s only mini) slump, people are screaming for the heads of everyone with an interlocking NY. Pep referred to it as the ebb and flow of baseball. When things are good, everything is peace and love; when things go sour, everything is death and destruction – until they go good again! I guess we can call it human nature 101.

Anyway, for posters who were down on Cashman, Girardi, Ransom, and anyone else Yankee during the good times, I don’t think you can or should be faulted for anything you might be saying now. You come by it honestly. For everyone else, the best I can say is if you loved everyone in July, try to summon up a little of it now. Now is probably when they need it the most! It isn’t to say that there is no validity to criticizing/questioning particular moves, such as why Ransom wasn’t pinch hit for last night. It’s just to say that if the guy wasn’t a total bum and loser who should be killed in your book before yesterday’s game, chances are you may be overreacting.

problem is that Ransom is getting average of two starts a week since 7/1

I’m trading AJ straight up for Washburn, but thats why I’m doing what I’m doing & Cash is the GM

  11. Phil - not in any OPPC because clubs are for 9 year olds

    Ransom isn’t the problem…he’s a back-up. I agree with anti-Matt.

Two starts per week (if that is true) means A-Rod DHs or Jeter DHs or Tex DHs. If this line-up can’t overcome one slot going to Ransom, it won’t make the playoffs this year. The Yanks line-up, even with Ransom, is better than everyone else in baseball day-in and day-out.

  12. Phil - not in any OPPC because clubs are for 9 year olds

And they are still in first place. Girardi has to rest the older guys and injured guys.

Cashman giving up the farm for a league average (at best) starter doesn’t improve things at all. Again, wasting too much time complaining about the fifth starter shouldn’t be the focus. AJ, CC, Joba, and Andy should more than be able to carry this team. Whatever they get from the fifth starter, since Wang is no longer available…is a bonus.

  13. Anti-Matt

Trisha – what does OPPC stand for?

Having been a Yankee fan since the late 50’s & kind of like know what I’m talking about but do have faults the way I express myself at times, I haven’t been on board with this team all year it’s just something about it, your never as good as you look when you win and never as bad as you look when you lose)this is the year of streaks. Hey the way I feel about this team is that they could win the WS & they could get into the playoffs & lose in the WS & they could lose in the 1st or 2nd rd of the playoffs & the could not even make the playoffs. This team has holes & more than a couple, OF def is as bad as it gets & not much improved when Gardner comes back, they needed a RP for the pen,a SP #3 or #4 would have been nice, they will have to address Joba’s innings pitch situation soon & then who moves into the rotation.I don’t think they could have done all this but at least one would have been nice

  15. Wave Your Hat

No one thinks Cody is the reason we lost yesterday, although I certainly think he contributed to it.

He is the current poster boy for Yankee roster mismanagement that has plagued the Yanks all year, headlined by 24th and 25th players who didn’t play for long stretches, because we had 13 pitchers or two back-up infielders – Angel Berroa, Anthony Claggett, Mark Melancon come to mind.

Hairston was a great pick-up because he could be the back-up infielder with the flexibility to move to another position if need be, give a lot of people a day off, and have a chance of producing when he is in the game.

He freed up a slot for a pinch hitter that might actually do something – like Duncan. Duncan has holes in his game, we understand that, but he has the potential, especially against lefties, to actually hit a HR or contribute offensively.

So now we keep Ransom, Hairston becomes an OF back-up where he is the least useful, and we don’t have a RH bat on the bench.

    Mystifying, frustrating and irritating.

This topic is about Munson, we shouldn’t even me mentioning Ransom here imho

I agree with both your posts. He was also my hero. 30 years later I am still sad he’s gone. It put’s all this Ransom drivel in perspective for me.

What is wrong with people. they can’t let one thread go by without complaining? Is this really an appropriate thread to complain in? Why not the previous one? Jesus!

  19. marcusk

30 years? wow. I was delivering newspapers when a customer told me someone on the Yankkees was in plane crash. There was no sports radio then, I rushed to a pay phone (no cels) and called Sportsphone and heard the terrible news. I will never forget Thurman Munson.
