I agree with both your posts. He was also my hero. 30 years later I am still sad he’s gone. It put’s all this Ransom drivel in perspective for me.

He is the current poster boy for Yankee roster mismanagement that has plagued the Yanks all year, headlined by 24th and 25th players who didn’t play for long stretches, because we had 13 pitchers or two back-up infielders – Angel Berroa, Anthony Claggett, Mark Melancon come to mind.

Hairston was a great pick-up because he could be the back-up infielder with the flexibility to move to another position if need be, give a lot of people a day off, and have a chance of producing when he is in the game.

He freed up a slot for a pinch hitter that might actually do something – like Duncan. Duncan has holes in his game, we understand that, but he has the potential, especially against lefties, to actually hit a HR or contribute offensively.

So now we keep Ransom, Hairston becomes an OF back-up where he is the least useful, and we don’t have a RH bat on the bench.
