    Good Luck Andy !

Andy makes a nice 5th starter, but not for $11m. Not sure why the Yanks didn’t make a big push for Lee or Washburn (especially Lee – did Philly really give up that much for him?).

  3. sunny615 August 4th, 2009 at 8:28 am

Seattle wanted the conversation to start with Austin Jackson for Washburn (two months of Washburn no less). I don’t think so. One of our best prospects for a two month rental? Feh. The Tigers definitely got away with paying less than the Yankees. Why everyone tries to pilfer the Yanks for middling vets is beyond me but it’s ridiculous and Cash was right not to pay.

The Indians wanted one of Hughes or Joba. Again the moon for Lee whereas the Phils got away with lesser prospects. Maybe we’re guilty of hugging our prospects, but that’s for the future to decide really.

Paco, as ridiculous as it seems, maybe Hal really is serious about a budget. I bet it wouldn’t be an issue if they were still selling out every game in the real Yankee Stadium. I still can’t believe it’s being torn down.

Other than a few starts Pettite has been a rock and it’s hard for me to see the Yanks not letting him come back, possibly on a similar sort of deal. Chances are they will retain Wang for a minimal guarantee pending rehab.

That still allows Hughes to return to starting and means the only expensive pitching addition would be a set up man which won’t break the bank. Or they could decide that Coke, Melancon, Marte, Bruney and Robertson is enough. then again they could keep Hughes setting up Mariano and add a starter for the back of the rotation.

They could then combine some financial and personnel assets to try and acquire a quality RF.

But that’s next year… right now a seven game winning streak is all that matters. One down and six to go!

  6. Betsy August 4th, 2009 at 8:40 am

The Yankees are not keeping Phil as a set up man – that’s not even an option. I don’t even understand why anyone would want that. I really don’t think Andy will be back and, frankly, I don’t want him back. I love the guy and he’s been a great Yankees, but we need a solid # 3 guy to anchor the middle of the rotation………and at this point, Andy is a #5.

  7. Joe August 4th, 2009 at 8:44 am

They already have a solid #3 guy- Joba Chamberlain. Phil will be #4 next season and they’ll need a #5. Phil Hughes will be starting next season and beyond. Anyone who says otherwise is ignorant.

They already have a quality RF- Nick Swisher who has an .850 OPS. They’ll need someone in LF unless Damon is willing to take a 1 year deal.

    Betsy-

People would want to see Phil as a set up man for the same reason they wanted to see Joba back in the bullpen. They see the ultimate results of being a dominant reliever, thinking short sightedly, not realizing that, given time, the dominance in the bullpen will translate to dominance in the starting rotation.

Earn that paycheck Pettitte! I would like to think the Yankees will start backing him up with a little run support, but that may be difficult tonight. Maybe the drain of constant questions about the trade that didn’t happen will start to get to Halladay but I really doubt it. at least the Yanks should have some confidence after the outing he had against us last time. I hope we start another roll in this series and carry it into the boston games.

Wouldn’t Joba be the “middle of the rotation anchor” the Yankees ‘need’ next season?

I guess it depends on what his innings limit is next season. It should be around 180-190 next season right?

“Maybe the drain of constant questions about the trade that didn’t happen will start to get to Halladay but I really doubt it”

Might have been true last week. Think that’s all over for him now. It’s locked in that he’s a Jay at least thru the end of season.

  12. Time Warper August 4th, 2009 at 9:04 am

Pettite’s ut-most strongest outing will ill-compare against a complete game win by Halladay tonight.

Back to second when all is said-and-done.

  13. Steve B August 4th, 2009 at 9:05 am

“They already have a quality RF- Nick Swisher who has an .850 OPS”

You’re half right. They have RF – Nick Swisher.

  14. Tom B August 4th, 2009 at 9:12 am

Time Warper, the bridges are west of here… you’ve gone too far.

  15. 86w183 August 4th, 2009 at 9:20 am

    Betsy —

To say Highes staying in the pen is not an option is just silly. Of course it is an option. My acknowledging it is not the same as endorsing it. To say you can’t understand why anyone would want it is just ignorant or arrogant — your choice. It’s every bit as easy to make that case as it was for those who prefer Joba in the pen.

For the record, I want Hughes and Joba starting too.

Swisher is a below average hitter with above average power and above average on-base ability and way belo average defensive abilities. He would be best as a roving fourth OF/DH with days off against high strikeout pitchers. Finding an every day RF is the top positional priority for 2010 as far as I’m concerned.

Frankly, I’d rather take the pessimistic view of the next few games. Taking the positive viewpoint doesn’t seem to work.

Seriously, have you all noticed that the more people look at the games and check off all the reasons the Yankees will win, the less likely they are to do so?

I’m not watching the Boston games. I confess to being a total chicken; I hate the pressurized atmosphere of any RS games as it is, and this time is going to be even worse. I seriously can’t handle it. :)

  17. upstate kate August 4th, 2009 at 9:29 am

I know what you mean Doreen, sometimes I record the game and watch it after (if its worth watching)

  18. Patrick from CT August 4th, 2009 at 9:38 am

If Andy goes out there and keeps the Yankees in games, he’s done his job. If he gets to 200 innings, we will all be vary happy.
Andy go 6 and give up 3 or less and you’ll get plenty of wins!
As things are right now, I’d bring Andy back on the same contract. He has not been the #5, he’s been the #3 or #4 all year.
Long way to go though and there still maybe be a move before Aug 31st that could effect next year.

  19. rjnyc August 4th, 2009 at 9:56 am

I wish people who whine when other teams make trades that seem like steal would realize that when teams deal with the Yankees, they ask for more than when they trade with other teams.

  20. ditmars1929 August 4th, 2009 at 9:59 am

rjnyc, that’s always appeared obvious to me.

  21. JeterJobafanForever - but I won't badmouth Phil August 4th, 2009 at 10:00 am

Girardi needs to give Andy the best batting line up for today’s game. Both Andy and Joba when pitching out of the #4 and #5 slots were given a poor line up seemingly because the regulars were getting a rest. Both could have had more W’s if the line ups had been better.

As I see it Joba will be #3 next year unless they obtain a pitcher of Halladay’s caliber.

And is amazing. He pitched through pain last year and all the doubters were considering him washed up. Andy is a warrior.

  22. JeterJobafanForever - but I won't badmouth Phil August 4th, 2009 at 10:01 am

    Andy is amazing.

  23. rover August 4th, 2009 at 10:01 am

Don’t believe there is any team who wouldn’t pencil andy in as a number 4 or 5. many would use him higher in the rotation. Pretty solid dude.

  24. Number 23 August 4th, 2009 at 10:17 am

Andy will pitch next year for an NL team.

  25. SportsGeek August 4th, 2009 at 12:18 pm

Have always loved Andy.. His professionalism.. His effort for the team.. His class.. and of course his results!!

I do have one question (and maybe it’s a concern)- Has anyone done an analysis of Andy inning by inning this year? It seems that he is strongest the first few innings, and then falls off. Sometimes he gives up runs in the 5th inning, sometimes the 6th, and sometimes the 7th if he gets that far. Is it the inning, or the pitch count, or the elapsed time (since start of the initial warmups) that makes a difference?

.. I’d like to see the analysis.. (well, I may do part of it myself if I get the time)

.. I’d like to see Girardi pull Andy maybe an inning earlier if there are signs.. rather than hoping that maybe he can make one more inning.

Pete, are you close with any sabermetrician(s)? Could you perhaps talk up this point with him/her/them (that is if you think there may be any truth to my question)?

    SG
