Yankees get some work in

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Aug 04, 2009 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

The Yankees are taking optional batting practice in the Rogers Centre.

Good turnout. The early hitters are: Cody Ransom, Jerry Hairston Jr., Jorge Posada, Eric Hinske, Nick Swisher, Derek Jeter, Jose Molina, Melky Cabrera and Robbie Cano.

Joba Chamberlain, Mark Melancon and Phil Coke are shagging flies in center. The Yankees typically hold n early workout after days off or before the first game in a road city.

Before you get all uppity about who is not here, keep in mind that every player has a different routine. Some players like more BP, others less. Some guys prefer working out in the afternoons or hitting off a tee in the cage. A-Rod is probably doing rehab work on his hip, etc.

is the roof open or closed? they don’t run the a/c in that joint when the roof is closed. very humid and sticky.

  3. Stephen August 4th, 2009 at 2:37 pm

Does Cano take BP with runners on second and third? Because he should.

He won’t make it out of the first inning

The early hitters are: Cody Ransom

    ==================================================

if nothing else you got to give Ransom props for still thinking that BP may actually make a difference for him..

or you could look at it that he’s taking away some precious swings for more important players on the team…which would be even more reason to release him..

FYI, the countdown for my first trip to the new stadium is down to about 50 hours! Any advice for a first time visitor to the new stadium?

Eat a steak sandwich from Loebels. It is ridiculous. be sure to put some horseradish and olives on it(they give you them if you ask) for atleast 1 bite because its a delicious flavor explosion.

Get the garlic fries, they are unlike any garlic fries I’ve had in other stadiums but well worth it.

Spend atleast 1 inning walking the concourse and checking out the action on the field from the standing room areas or the jumbo tron.

Walk the great hall and be sure to try and name every yankee that appears on a banner.

Fight someone under the O’neil banner. (you’ll know it when you see it, mind the blood stains)

  20. Steve B August 4th, 2009 at 2:51 pm

“what are the odds the Yanks score 5 runs off Halladay again?”

Pretty slim. In his four starts since that debacle (if you can call 5 runs in 7 innings a debacle) in NYS, he’s pitched 32 innings, allowed 8 earned (2.25 ERA), struck out 31 and walked 3. His last 2 starts at the Dome were CG’s. Upside is the Jays only scored 9 runs in those four starts. Yankees can win, but it will probably have to be more about Pettitte sitting on the Jays than the Yankees hitting Halladay hard.

    Clever. Take your own advice…

Some of you guys are WAY too uptight.. Relax. Chill. I root for the team too, I am allowed to knock certain flaws.

A Rod would be best served getting his “day off” tonight. He won’t do anything against Halladay. Work on the hip A Rod, and we will see you tomorrow.

Arod hits to over a 300 clip against doc in 66 ABs

  26. The Phranchise August 4th, 2009 at 2:53 pm

    Check out some stats though

    Damon career .349 off Hallday
    Arod .303
    Jorge .289
    Serhio Mitre .500 too funny

He kills Cano .184, Tex .231, Swisher .143, Jeter .241

Really it’s going to come down to Andy P tonight. Andy keeps Toronto to 3 runs or so they will at least have a chance especially if they can get to the bullpen. Otherwise it is a mute point if Andy gets rocked.

  27. RDM August 4th, 2009 at 2:54 pm

    Should be….

    Jeter 6
    Damon 7

Hey guys I’m friends with Dellin Betances cousin and he told me last nite he has to have Tommy John Surgery, I just spoke to someone from Tampa who confirmed it. Not bad he’s still young, strengthen that elbow.

    ——————————————————

thanks for the info and best of luck to Dellin…I hope he recovers and continues his climb to the big leagues.

The Yankees have an absolute epidemic of arm (elbow & shoulder injuries) in the minor leagues and in the majors. Some of the names of those who are/have been out are:

    George Kontos – Elbow
    Chin Mieng Wang – Shoulder
    Dellin Betances – Elbow
    Allan Horne – Shoulder
    Humberto Sanchez – Elbow
    Ian Kennedy – Aneurism (sp?)
    Andrew Brackman – Elbow
    J. B. Cox – Elbow
    Shane Green – Elbow

The Yankees need to do an investigation and find out what is going because clearly this is out of line with the rest of baseball. I have a feeling that someone in the minor league system needs to be shown the door…you can’t continue to screw up so many promising arms without someone paying a price. I wonder if the Yankees have become too concious of the speed gun and are encouraging their pitchers to throw harder than is necessary. If so thats proably why so many of them are becoming casualties.

  43. Steve B August 4th, 2009 at 3:08 pm

OK Erica, I’ll play today. Regular lineup except for Swisher, who couldn’t hit Hallday if you told him what’s comin’

    Jeter 6

No no no, the outbreak of arm injuries is because the Yankees constantly draft guys with huge potential but with injury red flags/histories of arm troubles thinking they might catch lightning in a bottle. I am tending to believe that it is not an organizational shortcoming but just the risk vs. reward draft strategy. Guys like Horne, Brackman, Cox, Sanchez and Wang for sure all carried the injury label when the Yankees acquired them either via draft, signing, trade, whatever.

The Yankees can afford to gamble on high-potential arms with questionable injury histories, because when it works out it’s Joba Chamberlain, but when it doesn’t, it’s time to sign AJ Burnett or the like.

I am going to ask you one qiuestion:

Knowing what you do about the history of injuries to young Yankee pitchers, would you have your own son sign with them out of high school or go to college and hope to get drafted later by an organization that takes better care of arms?

Better yet, if you are Aroldis Chapman’s agent would you take a few less dollars to sign with an organization that has a better track record with young arms or would you let him sign with the Yankees knowing what their history is?

  52. Kid Yankee August 4th, 2009 at 3:31 pm

OK, this is the most ridiculous discussion I have seen on this site to date. Most of the guys you mentioned were injured and needed surgery when they were drafted or traded for. The Yankees knew it and got them anyway, hoping that they would bounce back from the surgery and fulfill their potential. In some cases the only reason guys fell low enough to be drafted by the Yankees was because they were already injured and other teams knew it. It has nothing to do with the way they were “handled”. Please don’t show your ignorance by discussing something that you obviously know nothing about.
