Athletics release Giambi

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Aug 07, 2009 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

The Athletics released Jason Giambi today. The Big G was at .193/.332/.364 over 83 games and was on the disabled list.

Don’t be surprised if somebody picks him up. For the prorated minimum, it’ll be worth it to somebody to see if Giambi has anything left. It likely won’t be the Yankees, which is too bad because he would wear out right field at the Pony League park in the Bronx.

If he goes unwanted, Giambi will have a good time wherever he is. He always does.

Meanwhile, kudos to the Red Sox. They’re taking early BP on the field right now. You don’t often see that before the second game of a series.

I’d love to see Big G back as a pinch hitter. But our team is so solid right now, it’d be tough to get rid of anyone.

Steve Phillips on M.Kay show. Nice quality audio. Memo to SP: stretch the string farther and talk into the tin can.

  9. SJ44 August 7th, 2009 at 2:48 pm

This team doesn’t need Giambi. They just released Cody Ransom.

At this point, they are the same hitter.

Can’t keep living in the past.

By the way, I forgot to mention earlier, we have three people going for threepeats today. They are: CM, Jon Locke, and YankeeRay.

So last night my radio which was set on 880 suddenly starts playing a Boston Station – I’m in North Jersey. I know its not all that rare to get far away stations at night. I listened for like two minutes and heard the word “collaspe” and the comparing of the game to “A Hard Days Night” (McCartney played Fenway last night)

    ————————————————-

A spot on the 25 man roster is too valuable to waste on Giambi. Who would you release? Hinske…he can play the outfield and is a better hitter at this point. Hairston Jr…he plays too many positions and can be used as a pinch runner.

The only possibility would be if the Yankees were willing to wait until after September 1st when rosters are expanded.

  19. Patrick from CT August 7th, 2009 at 2:57 pm

I don’t know who could use the Big G? not the Yankees, we have Sui for DH’n.
The Red Sox can take all the extra BP they want; they are not hitting AJ tonight!
The Yankees got their BP in against Smoltz and Traber last night…LOL
The Yankees will run out the same lineup as last night, you can count on that.

I agree SJ about the Giambino. From all of the excitement we had when he signed to the way he’s ended up is just sad. A real product of the “Era”:

    1) HOF numbers for like 3-4 years because of the juice,
    2) made the money,
    3) then the “real” effect of steroids take over.

Agreed with pat, not a big fan of Giambi. His sunset years were long ago, and he still tried to make a comeback. We knew it’d be bad, but not this embarrassing.

He doesn’t deserve our sympathy. Years and years of grief with him. Injuries, ineptitude, blocking real players. Good guys are great to have around, but not for $20 million per.

I get that Pete loves the guy, and that likely rubs off on people here. But a lot of his warts go largely ignored.

Thanks for the thoughts. You’re right, they hit 7-7-7 this time!

  27. SJ44 August 7th, 2009 at 3:01 pm

Everytime a player gets released, we have people on here who wants him on the Yankees.

The Yankees are a better team now that they are freed of Jason Giambi. There is no reason to live in the past.

Let the Red Sox sign him. They seem to be stockpiling over the hill DH/1B.

Okay since my least favorite part of the blog is the constant updates – also my favorite, so go figure – I am going to put posts to other things right here. The problem with the updates is that if you don’t get to read and post all the time, by the time you see certain things, nobody is there to talk anymore since they’ve gone to the next topic!

    Okay

While it isn’t a fait d’acompli, I’ll be very surprised if Mitre doesn’t get another start. The other night I may have been the only person “guaranteeing” that he’d stay in the rotation. One thing I think I do exceedingly well is intuit Girardi and Cashman, at least in small ticket items (day to day business). It comes from paying attention to the way they conduct business. I also think it comes from being really level-headed about the Yankees in general and therefore usually being in a listening mode, as opposed to a demanding mode. Lack of knee jerking is all part of it.

(I’m sure I have many “lesser strengths”. I can live with that too. :) )

It hurt me to read about Hal McCoy. We are in such a dreadful state of affairs in the country and in the world. It hurts me to see newspapers appearing to go the way of the dinosaur. I believe we will rue that day and that if things get bad enough, you will see a re-emergence of the hard copy. Certain things should not be taken from the global community – newspapers are one of those things.

My heart also goes out to the Twins. I really like and admire them as a team. I hope the Idle can actually benefit them. They do deserve better. I’m sad for Jason also. I hope some team decides to pick him up.

I’m thankful for being a Yankee fan, for having people who tolerate me despite my many foibles (including some of the people here), and just thankful for being smart enough to be thankful.

    GO YANKEES

  30. Uncle Ellsworth So it's sorta social, demented and sad, but social. Right? August 7th, 2009 at 3:02 pm

    Really? Really.

    Tex ain’t DH’n

  32. The Phranchise August 7th, 2009 at 3:03 pm

I love the Big G and he would plant a few ones in RF. The problem is they now have Hairston, Pena, Gardner and a bunch of guys who create a ton of flexability. I would still love to have that luxury of him at DH during the playoffs. But alas, The Big G’s time has come and gone…………….. just like John Smoltz.

  33. Justin August 7th, 2009 at 3:04 pm

Can they offer Big G a minor league deal and bring him up with the expanded rosters in September? If he wears out right field then you consider him on the playoff roster as a PH threat. If he sucks, you DFA him. It may be worth a shot and he loved it in NY. Could be his last chance for a ring.

35 Minutes left to get in on today’s thrilling round of “Guess the Line Up”

We have one extremely popular line up so far with 14 people submitting it-

Here’s who is in so far:

*Fran, Ramey, Patrick, Upstate Kate, Benfica356, David, CM, NYY626, YankeeRay, Henner, Melissa C, Dan the Man, Albany Yankee, Tom from Worcester (all the same)
    *Rebecca
    *Nick
    *Dr. Cox
    *Adam
    *William Buckner

  35. SJ44 August 7th, 2009 at 3:07 pm

I would also add Nick Swisher to the list of improvements on the team.

He’s a terribly flawed player. Folks who love him often overstate his value.

However, he has helped this team on and off the field.

He is GREAT in the clubhouse. People discount that but, at times, the Yankees clubhouse can be a dour place.

Nick has lightened the moods of everybody. You know when that helps? During losing streaks.

Its not a coincidence that this team is better at blowing off bad periods of play than the past 3-4 Yankee teams.

He’s a bad OF and baserunner and can’t hit too much with RISP. But, he has had some good streaks for the Yankees so far this year and being able to play everyday after losing Nady has helped this club.

He’s not a star but is a valuable contributor. Considering they got him for Wilson Betemit, that’s a coup for Brian Cashman.

  36. Trevor August 7th, 2009 at 3:07 pm

Wasn’t Giambi a George signing? He loved the big name FAs. Plus he was mad they lost the WS to Colangelo D’backs. He wanted a big bopper.

Listening to M.Kay: he wonders if the teams will be given warnings before game due to Pedroia getting hit. If not, I believe Beckett will throw at someone. I think AJ would retaliate too. If they are warned could it affect AJ? He is among league leaders in hit batters, walks and wild pitches.

  42. lloyd August 7th, 2009 at 3:09 pm

speaking of throwing at people, I find it sickening that Burnett was suspended for throwing at someone when he denied doing it… they couldn’t technically prove it I get they can still suspend him though… but Matt Garza comes out and ADMITS after the game he threw at Mark.. and all he gets is a fine???? That’s ridiculous… Yanks get screwed over on that kind of stuff routinely…. They should be all over whoever hands down those suspensions and fines

  47. G. Love August 7th, 2009 at 3:13 pm

I have a weird feeling Beckett will throw at people and benches will clear tonight.

I don’t think we’re going to get the AJ/Beckett duel we think we are.

  48. Jerkface August 7th, 2009 at 3:13 pm

Any truth to some players being put on waivers today by the Yanks?

Every team puts all their players on waivers. If they get through its an extra trade option, and if they get claimed they just pull them back.

  49. m August 7th, 2009 at 3:13 pm

    Agreed, SJ.

And this is how bad Giambi was. I was thrilled to hear that we had gotten Swisher.

Cashman really made a point of talking up Swish yesterday on the Fan. Said that everyone makes gaffes in the field, but in New York it only takes a few to give you a reputation. Basically came out and said that he’s not as bad as people think. Which is true. I guess it’s worth putting up with for his power and personality, not necessarily in that order.

He really is the team cheerleader and, thanks to Twitter, the team liason for the fans. We have a term we use here, it’s “he’s not afraid to make ‘A’” (use your imagination on the A). That describes Swish to the T. Not afraid to embarrass himself while having a good time.

  50. Baha Men August 7th, 2009 at 3:14 pm

Nick, as well as CC and AJ, and also Jason Zillo, have made this team more human this year.

They are out in the community more….

They interact with the fans more than I remember ANY Yankee team has for the last 10 years.

I also think Hal should also get credit for that change in philosophy.

He comes from a hospitality background and I believe the team being a more approachable group stems from the top.

Its a VERY likeable team and its made following them much more enjoyable than in past seasons.

  55. GMAN August 7th, 2009 at 3:18 pm

Giambi in his prime with the A’s was a 1-man steroid-driven wreckin’ crew! That entire A’s team may well have been roid-drive.

  56. lloyd August 7th, 2009 at 3:19 pm

Uhh… Burnett threw a high and inside pitch… So did Garza… you can’t discriminate like that… like I said… you can’t even prove AJ threw at someone at purpose he denied it… if someone comes out and admits intentionally throwing at someone it should be automatic suspension… where the ball literally ended up doesn’t matter…. if you’re throwing at someone, you don’t have 1 million percent perfect control, it could always drift and hit someone in the head even if you don’t mean for it to.. Or it could hit someone in the shoulder when you meant to hit throw at their head… Like I said you can’t discriminate like that

  57. Sox it to Me! August 7th, 2009 at 3:20 pm

Just like Chicago didn’t hit him last weekend. What a joke he’s turned out to be.

I think it’s going to be the other way around tonight.

Beckett’s pissed = Yankees are in trouble tonight!

Series tied 1-1 and that will make it 9-1 Series tally: Red Sox lead!!!!!!…..much to your dismay!

Yanks/Sox players seem to tolerate each other much better than in the past from the time Clemens and Pedro took turns throwing high cheese at Jeter and Knobloch.

It appeared to hit a peak when Pedro pointed at his head when looking at Posada…letting him know he was going to get it. Also when Pedro hurled Zimmer to the grass in that one brawl. Lastly when the RedSox Fan in Fenway Rightfield went after Sheff… At least Jerry Remy was totally rational in calling the wrong doing of the Fan in the telecast.

MLB may have asked the players to chill because the fan intensity was too dangereous/overboard and could very well mortality event.

In general aside from Joba/Youk…Cooler heads prevail.
But the Bosox announcers (aside from Remy) are complete morons blinded by hate of pinstripes and Derek Jeter.

But I must say the Red
