Game 109: Red Sox at Yankees, Part III

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Aug 07, 2009 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

We go to extra innings at 0-0. Just a terrific game.

Alfredo Aceves in to pitch for the Yankees.

UPDATE, 10:31 p.m.: Walking Chris Woodward in a 0-0 game with two outs? Alfredo, Alfredo. 19 walks in two nights. Not good.

UPDATE, 10:36 p.m.: Ramon Ramirez to face Cano, Hairston and Cabrera.

UPDATE, 10:45 p.m.: Jeter with a chance to be a hero. Would they dare pie him?

UPDATE, 10:53 p.m.: No pie for you, Derek.

Yankees and Red Sox in extra innings scoreless for the first time since May of 1976.

UPDATE, 11:00 p.m.: Nice work by Alfredo Aceves, two scoreless innings. Damon, Tex and the overdue A-Rod to face Papelbon in the 11th.

UPDATE, 11:09 p.m.: Well, the bad news is that this game refuses to end. The good news for the Yankees is that Papelbon is probably finished.

UPDATE, 11;20 p.m: The two bullpens thus far: 8.1 innings. 3 hits, 0 runs, 10 Ks.

Brian Bruney warming up. That’s apparently it for Aceves.

UPDATE, 11:29 p.m.: Another shot for the Yankees. Melky with runners on first and second and two down. Yankees 0-8 with RISP.

Ironic if the Red Sox lost because of walks.

UPDATE, 11:32 p.m.: Where’s Luis Castillo when you need him?

Brian Bruney in to pitch. We haven’t seen much of him lately.

UPDATE, 11:39 p.m.: Bruney gets it done. Back to the top of the order for the bottom of the lucky 13th inning.

UPDATE, 11:45 p.m.: Jeter 1 for 11 in the series.

UPDATE, 11:50 p.m.: Alex with another shot to end it.

UPDATE, 11:54 p.m.: Going to the next thread. Part IV.

    That was an awful AB by Jorge. That was such a bad pitch.

    Please god let Ace do the job.

  11. Ross August 7th, 2009 at 10:26 pm

    Do you guys think that Girardi’s banking on using Mitre if needed? That’s the only thing that makes sense to me.

    Yanks really need to score in the 10th

    dont want to drag this out too long!

    What could have been a nice short game may turn into another 4 hour game.

    Anybody else in?

    If the Yanks walk-off:

    Nick – will eat Ramen

    Dave – will run 3 miles on treadmill

    RDM – will cry himself to sleep (sorry RDM :) )

  23. MG August 7th, 2009 at 10:28 pm

    I don’t think this is the best spot for Aceves but hopefully he gets 3 outs and a chance to win in the 10th.

  24. M August 7th, 2009 at 10:28 pm

    What is Joe doing w/ the pen…i guess we are saving Mo and Hughes for tomorrow.

    We will probably see Bruney next inning if we get there.

  25. Greg D August 7th, 2009 at 10:28 pm

    dont’ let this guy pull it

  26. sevencostanza August 7th, 2009 at 10:28 pm

    aceves don’t get cute

  27. Ross August 7th, 2009 at 10:28 pm

    “Where is MO? Posada needs to see an eye doctor…”

    With two strikes, facing Bard’s heater, Jorge had little chance but to swing at anything that looks close. I’m sure he’s kicking himself.

  28. RDM August 7th, 2009 at 10:28 pm

    If this team could lay down a bunt…we’d all be having beer and celebrating beating Beckett

    tough hop

    but Cano makes it look easy

    GOLD GLOVE!

  31. Greg D August 7th, 2009 at 10:29 pm

    way to keep the ball down Aceves

  32. MG August 7th, 2009 at 10:29 pm

    that was not an easy play for Cano but he made it look so easy.

  33. sevencostanza August 7th, 2009 at 10:29 pm

    if you would stop posting I wouldn’t have to read what you have to say

  34. RDM August 7th, 2009 at 10:29 pm

    “close” the ball almost bouced before home plate. Actually, the ball bounced, hit posada below the knee and he swung. If he didn’t swing would have been a HBP, watch the replay

  35. Doreen August 7th, 2009 at 10:30 pm

    I was fine till the bottom of the ninth. Now, I’ve got butterflies and shaky hands. Not good. It’s just a game, fercryinoutloud! :lol:

  36. Mike in a New York State of Mind August 7th, 2009 at 10:30 pm

    Aceves is in a good position pitching against the bottom of the order…and I agree…the Melkman will deliver in the bottom of the inning…AJ better get the pie ready!!

  37. CM (Jeter will get pied someday) August 7th, 2009 at 10:30 pm

    BD,

    If the Yankees get a walkoff, Kei Igawa is my favorite player. YES! I said it! I’m gambling!

  40. RDM August 7th, 2009 at 10:30 pm

    If a ball bounces and hits you that is a HBP (unless you swing…see Posada)

    When the Yankees win this one goes in the Yankee Classics vault.

  46. RDM August 7th, 2009 at 10:31 pm

    Furthermore, ball is lying there, Posada stands there and gets tagged out…why didn’t he run to first base?

  47. PL August 7th, 2009 at 10:31 pm

    that walk is bad

  51. trisha - OPPC lifetime member with ice water in her veins! August 7th, 2009 at 10:31 pm

    It seriously has been a nice experience watching the majority of the game without posting (no comments necessary) and so I haven’t been following what people have been saying. I can only hope that there was no whining or complaining about anything in this game. This is one of the best-played games I have remembered watching ever. You’d have to be playing with half a deck to find anything wrong in this game.

    JMO

    Later

    Back to congratulate our Yanks for the win. How’s that for confidence!

    :)

  52. Matt August 7th, 2009 at 10:31 pm

    Come on guys, that pitch wasn’t even close. That started well out of the zone and stayed well out of the zone.

    It was Posada being overanxious, trying to do too much, again, that caused that result. Matsui spit on a few of those pitches, it’s not impossible to do so. However, Posada was getting himself out that at bat.

    He’s been dreadful in the late inning this year other than that walk off hit off of Fuentes, where the whole ballpark knew what pitch was coming.

  53. Trevor August 7th, 2009 at 10:31 pm

    Can’t walk Woodward.

  54. Erica - always OPPC August 7th, 2009 at 10:31 pm

    I save this for special occasions, but what the heck…

    If the Yankees win I will run around the blog naked

  55. PL August 7th, 2009 at 10:32 pm

    Ellsbury will eventually get a hit he’s too good…damn walks just kill

  56. Nick in SF August 7th, 2009 at 10:32 pm

    Hmmm, the ramen promise was more Okijima/Matsui specific.

    I have no idea what to promise for Cano/Swisher/Melky.

    If Aceves is the winning pitcher I’ll go to a taqueria, how’s that?

  57. RDM August 7th, 2009 at 10:32 pm

    0-2 to Woodard and Ace walks him…you wonder about this team

  58. kill.schill(ing) August 7th, 2009 at 10:32 pm

    Does anyone have Monistat to send Youklis? I feel bad for the guy. The itching was obviously bothering him in 9th innings.

    Someone on a serious note however is going to have to explain to me why, now, that the Yankees acquired Hairston and have Hinske on the bench, Girardi didn’t pitch-run for Matsui in the 7th inning if he’s going to hit-and-run.

    Girardi increasingly HAS NOT been pinch-running for Matsui in late-innings. Now that the Yankees have a benck, I can’t fathom why?

  59. Wang IS Taiwan August 7th, 2009 at 10:32 pm

    killer for either team to lose this one…but i’d rather see the sux suffer, of course.

  60. Greg D August 7th, 2009 at 10:32 pm

    cmon Aceves

  61. Matt August 7th, 2009 at 10:32 pm

    Walking the 9 hitter in a 0-0 game in extras.

    That’s Posada behind the plate for you though. 0-2 count, nibble nibble nibble nibble and oh look, a walk!

    0-2 on the guy, he’s the 9 hitter for a reason, GO AFTER HIM.

  62. Donnie - Will Meet Dustin Pedroia Under the O'Neill Banner August 7th, 2009 at 10:32 pm

    Not good.

  85. RS August 7th, 2009 at 10:34 pm

    There is some back up story to that statement-

    During the 1996 world series after game 2, the Yanks were down 0-2 and no one thought they had any prayer. I was in CVS or something and a male and female employee were talking about the Yankees. The guy said the Yanks will still win. The girl said, “no way”. She then said, “If the Yankees win, I will run aroudn this store naked”

    To this day I wonder if he made her do it

    Posted this at the end of the last thread, but here it is again. I think it’s pretty cool.

    The last time the Yankees went into extras in a scoreless tie vs. the S*x, according to YES, was May 22, 1976. That is the day I was born.

    Yankees won 1-0 in the 11th. Catfish Hunter went the whole way.

  128. CB August 7th, 2009 at 10:38 pm

    With both Melky and Swisher being hot right now the yankees have a truly circular line up.

    The bottom of the yankee’s line up is now much better than the bottom of the sox line up.

    Let’s hope that marginal gap makes a difference.

  129. MG August 7th, 2009 at 10:38 pm

    Most on the blog thought Joe did the right move. As evidence, Matsui batted in the 9th.

    I would have pinch-run so that there would have be no bottom of the 9th. Not criticism just different.

    I think Joe waits until he gets to second to pinch-run. Dont know why.

    history has a good chance of repeating itself – YES announcers mentioned earlier that in 1976, first year of old stadium Yanks won 1-0 against the Sox in the 11th inning.

    Yanks bring in a run now and they win 1-0 in the 11th in first year of the new stadium. Kinda freaky if it happens…

    I positively despise Youklis.

    My God is Teixiera a great 1st baseman. Can anyone make an argument that Mattingly was better? It’s been a while since I watch Mattingly but I never remember the flair Tex brings to it.

    It’s not like they haven’t had their chances either tonight. Melky not bunting with 1st and 2nd, no outs in the 3rd was a crushing mistake, and Posada and Jeter had chances to end it and helped the Red Sox out by chasing.

  528. Rob B August 7th, 2009 at 11:13 pm

    Aceves pitching the 12th. Yankees still have: Melancon, Robertson, Coke, and Bruney.

    There are 3 pretty good options there. To think that the S*x have a huge bullpen advantage at this point is silly, IMO.

  529. CB August 7th, 2009 at 11:13 pm

    That pitch right there Aceves struck JD Drew out on is the difference between a right handed pitcher who can start in the majors and one who is only a reliever.

    That’s the kind of pitch you need to be able to get out left handed batters as a RH pitcher.

    Agreed. The Yanks have come all this way with their #5 starters (Wang, Hughes, Mitre) winning just 4 wins combined.

    Ace alone has 7 wins out of the bullpen, and has only been up here since May.

    His ability to eat up innings while staying effective is what makes him so special. I would be fine with having Gaudin as the #5 starter.

    That was ball four. What a joke. I understand that when you go 3-0, you generally give the pitcher a courteousy call if he gets close. But in a game like this? No. That’s ball four. Should’ve been loaded for Jeter.

    One strike away; nothing-and-two, the count to Hinske. Fans on the their feet; rally towels are being waved. Brad Lidge stretches. The 0-2 pitch — swing and a miss, struck him out! The Philadelphia Phillies are 2008 World Champions of baseball! Brad Lidge does it again, and stays perfect for the 2008 season! 48-for-48 in save opportunities, and let the city celebrate! Don’t let the 48-hour wait diminish the euphoria of this moment, and the celebration. And it has been 28 years since the Phillies have enjoyed a World Championship; 25 years in this city with a team that has enjoyed a World Championship, and the fans are ready to celebrate. What a night!

  776. CB August 7th, 2009 at 11:34 pm

    Question now is this -

    Doe Bruney come into this very high pressured game and just overthrow?

    When he overthrows he’s awful.

    And he hasn’t thrown in a while so he’ll be very strong and very rusty.

    You’ll be able to tell from the first couple of pitches if this is going to end ugly.

    ANOTHER idiot trying to be the hero rather than simply hitting a ball hard on a line somewhere.

    3-1 pitch, up, and he tries to hit a home run and pops out despite the winning run being in SCORING POSITION.

    This is why nobody has scored. They all are trying to be the hero and nobody can just take a normal swing.

  833. Patrick August 7th, 2009 at 11:37 pm

    Bruney looks good right now but this is the reason why you don’t pull Hughes after 1 out.

    If Joe does the smart thing and leaves Hughes in for the 9th, you’ve got Mo in the 10th, Ace in the 11-13th then you piece it together from there.

    Hopefully the pen can hold it down for awhile.

    Bruney is just so frustrating…

    When he doesn’t overthrow and when he stays inside himself he’s a dominant set up guy.

    He just looked exactly the way he did earlier in the season before he went on the DL.

    It’s all there.

    If he’d just throw the way he just did he’d be a huge weapon.

    Great performance given the circumstances.

    Martinez, Youkilis, and Ortiz up next.

    Hoo boy.

  1034. The Phranchise August 7th, 2009 at 11:54 pm

    Got to swing at a strike there. A walk puts a runner in scoring position. Darn

  1035. Brandon... I'M AWESOME ! SOMEBODY FIND ME THE REAL CC SABATHIA !!!! August 7th, 2009 at 11:54 pm

    Bruney vs V-Mart, Youk and Ortiz

    *goes to liquor cabinet* :(

  1036. CB August 7th, 2009 at 11:54 pm

    He pulled the curve ball on a 3-1 count

  1037. RDM August 7th, 2009 at 11:55 pm

    3-0 and A Rod flies out…thanks for the 5th beer A Rod

  1038. CaptainsCorner August 7th, 2009 at 11:55 pm

    Arod must be really tired after playing the field for 5 hours after surgery. He tried to hit the ball 900 feet…

  1039. rconn23 August 7th, 2009 at 11:55 pm

    It’s not good pitching anymore. It’s offensive ineptitude. Terrible.

  1040. Evan D. August 7th, 2009 at 11:55 pm

    Pete – when does “Part IV” begin??

  1041. RS August 7th, 2009 at 11:55 pm

    The Yankees are really pushing their luck right now. I’m guessing Girardi prays that Bruney can handle VMart and Youkilis, and then he goes to Coke for Ortiz and Drew.

  1042. JZ August 7th, 2009 at 11:55 pm

    yeah, that’s ball 4 for SURE

  1043. Eric August 7th, 2009 at 11:55 pm

    “Unless you REALLY love pitching, why would you want to watch a replay of this on Yankees Classics?”

    Exactly. This would have been a classic if it was won in the 11th off Papelbon, or before. Anything from the 12th or beyond is just tedious.

  1044. CaptainsCorner August 7th, 2009 at 11:55 pm

    Bruney against the big guys could get hairy…

  1045. Donnie - Will Meet Dustin Pedroia Under the O'Neill Banner August 7th, 2009 at 11:56 pm

    Jesus. I hate them all. All of them.

    I just want to shower and go to bed so that my head stops hurting. Is that so much to ask?

    If we don’t win with a walkoff, I have a feeling the final score is gonna be ugly. If they score one, they’re scoring 4 or 5. Just got a feeling.

  1046. Evan D. August 7th, 2009 at 11:56 pm

    Everyone is swinging for the fences. Maybe Yanks should move the walls in a few feet before next season!

  1047. RDM August 7th, 2009 at 11:56 pm

    Good night all…this game has lost is luster w/no fundemental play and the poor play of Jeter, Damon, and A Rod….bad loss

  1048. rconn23 August 7th, 2009 at 11:56 pm

    Spin it any way you want, this would be a bad loss.

  1049. DOUG August 7th, 2009 at 11:56 pm

    the red sox are over due….they have not had a base runner in awhile. of course if they get one big sloppy will hit into a double play

  1050. The Ghost August 7th, 2009 at 11:56 pm

    For once in your life, win a big one. Come on A.

    ===========

    The problem with Arod in these situations is he’s ALWAYS trying to win the game instead of what he should be doing which is hitting the ball hard. I guarantee you that’s the only think Melky is thinking when he’s up in a clutch spot.

  1051. m August 7th, 2009 at 11:56 pm

    Remember when a 3 hour game looked doable?

    I have a good story written. Just need an ending.

    Thanks to everybody for reading. This has been a lot of fun.

    Please dont blow this bruney

  1056. Wang IS Taiwan August 7th, 2009 at 11:56 pm

    I’m not sure we can ask for the same sort of luck out of Bruney against these guys…

  1057. DT - OPPC member (blood type - Positive) August 7th, 2009 at 11:57 pm

    LOL… Feinsand has to do the Daily News 14th inning…

  1058. CB August 7th, 2009 at 11:57 pm

    Tazawa is not only a rookie who has never made a major league appearance – he’s spent less than a year in the minors in america.

    He only pitched in the japanese industrial league which isn’t the top league in japan.

    This will be a brutal debut game for him to come in and close out if it gets to that.

  1059. Trevor August 7th, 2009 at 11:57 pm

    I’m just about done with this game. Don’t know about anyone else.
    I officially don’t care if the Sox win. I hate these type of games.

  1060. Yankee fan August 7th, 2009 at 11:57 pm

    TRADE A-ROD FOR A CARTON OF CIGARETTES!

  1061. DOUG August 7th, 2009 at 11:57 pm

    i agree games that go on this long are just silly…

  1062. JZ August 7th, 2009 at 11:57 pm

    Bruney will end the game.

  1063. DOUG August 7th, 2009 at 11:58 pm

    it is a crap shoot at this point

  1064. The Phranchise August 7th, 2009 at 11:58 pm

    As usual, the leadoff man is the key. Get him the other guys will start hacking for homers. Walk him and they will score a few runs for sure. Yankees have had lots of chances. I would love to see them get one more

  1065. Kris August 7th, 2009 at 11:58 pm

    West coast games are starting to end…

  1066. RS August 7th, 2009 at 11:58 pm

    This won’t even be that bad of a loss. The Yankees would still have CC going tomorrow with a fresh Hughes and Rivera, and a 2.5 game lead on the Sox.

    The Red Sox bullpen is more fried, and they have Mr. 4-inning Buchholz.

  1067. Bo Knows August 7th, 2009 at 11:58 pm

    I haven’t seen so many windmills since Rotterdam. Doesn’t matter whether anyone is on or not, it’s all going for HRs. The question is why?

  1068. DOUG August 7th, 2009 at 11:58 pm

    0-2 to 3-2 is jabba pitching

  1069. Donnie - Will Meet Dustin Pedroia Under the O'Neill Banner August 7th, 2009 at 11:58 pm

    Again with the 0-2 turning in to 3-2. Ugh.

  1070. RS August 7th, 2009 at 11:58 pm

    We’re entering bullpen territory where walks are inevitable…

  1071. Pie Time August 7th, 2009 at 11:59 pm

    Hal and Hank are now seriously discussing the merits of bringing the right and left field fences in next season to counter their team’s weak bats.

  1072. The Phranchise August 7th, 2009 at 11:59 pm

    Jeter 0-6 Damon 0-6 Tex 0-5 Arod 1-6.

    Jeez, hard to imagine that especially with Jeter and Damon not getting on base once.

  1073. RS August 7th, 2009 at 11:59 pm

    YES, that was so close!

  1074. DOUG August 7th, 2009 at 11:59 pm

    wow..that was scary

  1075. JZ August 7th, 2009 at 11:59 pm

    The loudest out tonight so far, yeah, I agree sox is due since Yanks wasted too much

  1082. DOUG August 8th, 2009 at 12:02 am

    coke???

  1083. DOUG August 8th, 2009 at 12:03 am

    bruney is over due for a walk

  1084. Matt August 8th, 2009 at 12:03 am

    If Girardi is not warming someone up right now, he’s incredibly dumb.

    Bruney is falling behind every hitter and missing his spots. Tell tale signs of fatigue.

  1085. Wang IS Taiwan August 8th, 2009 at 12:03 am

    Yes, Coke is available.

    Pabelbum reacted violently (in a funny way) when the Hinske caught the long ball.

  1086. JZ August 8th, 2009 at 12:05 am

    the positive side is, no matter what, Yanks should have better chance to win this afternoon’s game

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Pretty much. Sometimes I think he must still be 9 years old.
  1090. JZ August 8th, 2009 at 12:09 am
    wow, that’s scary
  1091. Pie Time August 8th, 2009 at 12:09 am
    Wait, that makes no sense. I thought you said Pedroia reacted violently. This game is causing me problems.
  1092. The Phranchise August 8th, 2009 at 12:10 am
    Bruney ugly, but I’ll take it.
    This has to be the Yankees inning here.
  1093. Wang IS Taiwan August 8th, 2009 at 12:11 am
    Pedroia only LOOKS 9; Pabelbum acts it. Actually, there is a lot of childish whining in general on that team. How do you single out a couple of players only?
  1094. Betsy August 8th, 2009 at 12:12 am
    Well, Bruney pitched very well – both teams have received brilliant pitching. Who is available tomorrow? Coke, Mo, Phil, Robertson, Melancon? Not bad I suppose – though Robertson or Melancon are going to have to pitch the next inning. This is a rough game…….
  1095. Wang IS Taiwan August 8th, 2009 at 12:12 am
    Oh, Tazawa freak out please at the thought of pitching to one of Japan’s baseball gods!!
  1096. Pie Time August 8th, 2009 at 12:13 am
    Nice walk to get to Veritek. Nice out uncaught roid guy.
  1097. Wang IS Taiwan August 8th, 2009 at 12:14 am
    Betsy,
    I would say Bruney pitched well the first inning; not so great the second. He was a little amped up — which is understandable. He got out of there without giving up a run and that’s what’s impt.
  1098. Shawn August 8th, 2009 at 12:15 am
    Hip hip – let’s go cano!
  1099. JZ August 8th, 2009 at 12:15 am
    could Posada be slower?
  1100. Wang IS Taiwan August 8th, 2009 at 12:16 am
    Too bad Jeet isn’t on base (for speed).
  1101. JZ August 8th, 2009 at 12:16 am
    Posada in the scoring position? Idon’t think so
  1102. Betsy August 8th, 2009 at 12:17 am
    How would this be a bad loss, Rconn? Is every loss a bad loss? I think people expect perfection from this team……they’re not going to get it done every time.
  1103. Shawn August 8th, 2009 at 12:17 am
    hinske walk, melk-man delivers with the bases loaded?
  1104. JZ August 8th, 2009 at 12:17 am
    all right, we got a PR
  1105. Pie Time August 8th, 2009 at 12:19 am
    “Pedroia only LOOKS 9; Pabelbum acts it. Actually, there is a lot of childish whining in general on that team. How do you single out a couple of players only?”
    Totally. And I’m sorry. I was commenting on my own comment when I made the reference to the whip and then I realized it didn’t make any sense. Pedroia is the jockey. Papelbon is the skirt wearing whiner who has been sucking this year. I thought you mentioned Pedroia when you actually mentioned Papelbon. My mom says I’m cool.
    Please win this game.
  1106. JZ August 8th, 2009 at 12:21 am
    The Yanks just can’t win this game
  1112. The Phranchise August 8th, 2009 at 12:26 am
    Ughh, another swing at an obvious ball four.
    Tazawa for all the hype, doesn’t look to impressive. All those balls were rockets. Flat fastball and not overpowering. He has a couple of offspeeds. Woo hoo.
  1113. Pie Time August 8th, 2009 at 12:26 am
    … suck
  1114. JZ August 8th, 2009 at 12:28 am
