Game 109: Red Sox at Yankees, Part IV

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Aug 07, 2009 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

We’re headed for midnight at 0-0. This has now become one of those games everybody will save their ticket stub. What a classic.

UPDATE, 11:57 p.m: Bruney has to deal with Martinez, Youkilis and Ortiz this inning. Boston is out of relievers and had Junichi Tazawa warming up. He was called up today and was expected to start in place of John Smoltz.

Yankees still have Phil Coke, Mark Melancon and Dave Robertson left. Not Nick Swisher.

UPDATE, 12:02 a.m.: Yankees could use a 6-4-3 from Papi now. Bruney has lost his command a little.

UPDATE, 12:06 p.m.: This just in: Bill Clinton flying to the Bronx to negotiate the release of 48,262 people held hostage by this game.

UPDATE, 12:13 a.m.: This is Tazawa’s debut. He was called up this morning. What a spot to put the kid in. But Francona ran out of pitchers. He’ll go awhile if it lasts.

UPDATE, 12:15 a.m.: Posada gets it started with a one-out single. Pinch run Pena? Probably not unless Posada gets to second.

Yankees have Pena and Molina left.

UPDATE, 12:16 p.m.: Here comes Pena. Hinske can win it.

UPDATE, 12:19 a.m.: Watch a catch by Drew, a game-saver. Incredible.

Melky Cabrera, the walk-off king of New York, gets his shot. Can he do it again?

UPDATE, 12:23 a.m.: Tazawa is giving up rockets.

UPDATE, 12:25 a.m.: And so we go on. Yankees 0-11 with RISP and have stranded 12.

UPDATE, 12:29 a.m.: It’s the 15th inning and the Red Sox have four hits, all singles. How is that even possible?

At what point do they send CC home to rest up for tomorrow? I’m also officially renouncing anything that I write at this point. I can’t be responsible.

UPDATE, 12:35 a.m.: Top of the order to face Tazawa.

UPDATE, 12:36 a.m.: Jeter with a single. Nobody else for Boston, Tazawa is on his on here. Damon, Tex and A-Rod next.

UPDATE, 12:37 a.m.: Tazawa has given up hits to three of the six batters he faced and Girardi had Damon, one of his hottest hitters, bunt. Why? Of course he can’t bunt. He never does it.

UPDATE, 12:40 a.m.: Alex again. He has ended four innings today.

UPDATE, 12:45 a.m.: What a game. Alex breaks his drought, Yankees win 2-0. Boston has to be crushed. Now they get CC.

  2. tex's friend August 7th, 2009 at 11:55 pm

  5. YankeesLuv August 7th, 2009 at 11:56 pm

Hi guys. I just went to college and graduated, is the game still on?

  6. Ellen August 7th, 2009 at 11:56 pm

    ARod is worth every penny.

  7. Josh August 7th, 2009 at 11:56 pm

How much longer can we shut the Red Sox down? Something has to give.

  8. Paul August 7th, 2009 at 11:56 pm

    Iowa Baseball Confederacy, anyone?

  9. Nick in SF August 7th, 2009 at 11:56 pm

I was going to dvr the beginning of this game and run out for some early dinner… then I decided to watch a few innings first… then it was going quickly so I decided to wait it out…

    I might pass out.

  10. Rob August 7th, 2009 at 11:57 pm

Only a classic if the yankees win.

  11. YankeesLuv August 7th, 2009 at 11:57 pm

Compared to who? It’s not like anyone else has been smashing the ball.

  12. Brandon August 7th, 2009 at 11:57 pm

Wow. 14th inning, and Bruney in for his 2nd of work. Amazing we haven’t lost yet!

  13. Ellen August 7th, 2009 at 11:57 pm

P.S. YES just had a shot of the press booth, Pete’s in the front row wearing blue. Hi Pete!

  14. Ross (will eat own foot for an end to this game) August 7th, 2009 at 11:57 pm

    My god, Feinsand sounds horrible.

  15. Brian M August 7th, 2009 at 11:58 pm

  16. mattseattleusa August 7th, 2009 at 11:58 pm

I’m listening online…will tonight be the night we hear Sterling with a “Hinske with your best shot!?!”

  17. CB August 7th, 2009 at 11:58 pm

Tazawa is not only a rookie who has never made a major league appearance – he’s spent less than a year in the minors in america.

He only pitched in the japanese industrial league which isn’t the top league in japan.

This will be a brutal debut game for him to come in and close out if it gets to that.

  18. lowshun August 7th, 2009 at 11:58 pm

    PartIV – The final chapter?

  19. Trevor August 7th, 2009 at 11:59 pm

My eyes are blood shot. I’m ready to hit the sac. Don’t care who wins.

    Gameday has packed it in.

  21. CaptainsCorner August 7th, 2009 at 11:59 pm

Too bad Hughes had to be used for only 1 out. Asking Bruney to go 2 innings is not good.

  22. M August 7th, 2009 at 11:59 pm

0-2 Bruney what the hell? Terrible job.

  23. Ellen August 7th, 2009 at 11:59 pm

  28. BR August 7th, 2009 at 11:59 pm

How can Saito go another inning? He threw 30 something pitches against the Rays a few nights ago, pitched last night, and has already thrown more than 20 pitches tonight

  29. Pel August 7th, 2009 at 11:59 pm

    Hey! It’s tomorrow!

  51. The Ghost August 8th, 2009 at 12:00 am

Brian stop throwing it down the middle but throw strikes! :x

  53. m August 8th, 2009 at 12:00 am

Oh, crap. Close call. Blart had to get off his PTS to grab that one.

    Bruney getting tired.

  54. Evan D. August 8th, 2009 at 12:00 am

If Red Sox lose this game they are going to be disheartended. If they win it can rejuvenate them and give them some great momentum.

    C’mon Yanks.

  55. Greg D August 8th, 2009 at 12:00 am

cmon Bruney if you fall behind you will get hurt

  56. Rick(Amsterdam) August 8th, 2009 at 12:00 am

time for a Coke, Bruney is losing it.

  60. Erica - always OPPC August 8th, 2009 at 12:01 am

I showered fast. Who made the scary catch??

  61. Evan D. August 8th, 2009 at 12:01 am

May not have mattered but I’m really annoyed that Hughes and Mo were only used for 4 outs. Those 2 could have gotten a min of 6 and maybe even 8 outs.

  62. PL August 8th, 2009 at 12:01 am

o is this the beginning of the end?…not sure what joe is waiting for

  63. CB August 8th, 2009 at 12:01 am

    Very good play by melky

  64. The Ghost August 8th, 2009 at 12:01 am

Time to take Bruney out. Two hard shots is enough for me, but not for Girardi. He’ll take him out after this walk

  65. Ross (will eat own foot for an end to this game) August 8th, 2009 at 12:01 am

Bruney is running out of magic.

Okay, there is one way I’d care if we lost. If Ortiz hit it out, I’ll vomit.

  66. Brandon... I'M AWESOME ! SOMEBODY FIND ME THE REAL CC SABATHIA !!!! August 8th, 2009 at 12:01 am

I don’t like these swings on Bruney right now. :(

  67. CaptainsCorner August 8th, 2009 at 12:01 am

Bruney is definitely finished. Fastballs with nothing on them and bad location..Coke start warming up…

  68. Tarheelyank August 8th, 2009 at 12:01 am

    Who’s up in the pen?

  69. aronik August 8th, 2009 at 12:02 am

  73. JRod August 8th, 2009 at 12:02 am

    Is Melancon warming up?

  74. CB August 8th, 2009 at 12:02 am

Bruney’s command is starting to go. He’s getting tired.

  75. BD 2.0 August 8th, 2009 at 12:02 am

gotta mix the slider in Bruney

    get a groundball for once…

I’m listening online…will tonight be the night we hear Sterling with a “Hinske with your best shot!?!”

    he did already
NY radio guys Joe and Evan gave props to Pete and commenters when Sterling used it

  81. Greg D August 8th, 2009 at 12:03 am

    this continues to be agonizing

  82. lowshun August 8th, 2009 at 12:03 am

Bruney falling behind last 2 batters.

  83. Evan D. August 8th, 2009 at 12:03 am

Why no Coke for Ortiz and Drew???

  84. PL August 8th, 2009 at 12:03 am

come on Bruney you jerk face

  85. RS August 8th, 2009 at 12:03 am

What is Girardi doing?? Where is Coke?!

  86. CaptainsCorner August 8th, 2009 at 12:03 am

Get Bruney out of there…He is cooked…

  87. BD 2.0 August 8th, 2009 at 12:03 am

    now Ortiz can sit fastball

  88. Brandon... I'M AWESOME ! SOMEBODY FIND ME THE REAL CC SABATHIA !!!! August 8th, 2009 at 12:03 am

    Not good, not good.

  89. BR August 8th, 2009 at 12:03 am

There is absolutely no reason for Bruney to still be pitching in this game

  90. Jack the Ripper August 8th, 2009 at 12:03 am

if he walks him here I blame Girardi for not bringing Coke in

  91. BD 2.0 August 8th, 2009 at 12:03 am

and Ortiz is still late on it :)

  92. Trevor August 8th, 2009 at 12:03 am

You know Bruney is going to give something up. I can feel it.

  93. PL August 8th, 2009 at 12:03 am

Ortiz cant buy a walk or a hit…let him pop up

  94. Rob August 8th, 2009 at 12:03 am

At least we have hughes tomorrow.

  95. tex's friend August 8th, 2009 at 12:04 am

oh boy. its like rohengardner in the 9th inning when his arm went.

  96. BD 2.0 August 8th, 2009 at 12:04 am

    slider!

  97. MG August 8th, 2009 at 12:04 am

Ortiz can’t catch up with the fastball but Bruney needs to throw a strike. Coke should face Drew.

  98. North August 8th, 2009 at 12:04 am

I have a baaaaad feeling about Bruney!

  99. lowshun August 8th, 2009 at 12:04 am

    Did ortiz just yell Cone-Yo?

  100. Brian M August 8th, 2009 at 12:04 am

At the risk of repeating myself get Melancon in this game before Bruney screws up hours of effort from everyone else.

  101. Ross (will eat own foot for an end to this game) August 8th, 2009 at 12:04 am

Gameday thinks the game should be over. It stopped updating.

  102. Nick in SF August 8th, 2009 at 12:04 am

Papelbon with the premature celebration on that ‘homer’.

    That’s a shame.

  106. RS August 8th, 2009 at 12:04 am

Why no slider down and in to Ortiz?

There better be a good reason why Coke’s not in this game.

    lot of megative vibes here

  108. hey kelvin says August 8th, 2009 at 12:04 am

  109. CaptainsCorner August 8th, 2009 at 12:04 am

  117. Matt August 8th, 2009 at 12:05 am

Perfect spot for Coke, if Girardi has a brain.

Bruney missing his spots by a lot. 30 pitches for a short reliever, you think he’s tired?

  118. James August 8th, 2009 at 12:05 am

  124. RS August 8th, 2009 at 12:06 am

3 hard hit balls in a row. Get Bruney out of the game! It’s not his fault, but he’s tiring now.

  125. CB August 8th, 2009 at 12:06 am

    “now Ortiz can sit fastball”

    BD,

That’s not how you pitch Ortiz anymore.

He can’t catch up to the fastball – especially bruney’s good fastball.

You don’t want to speed up Ortiz’s bat by throwing him a slider.

  126. waqar August 8th, 2009 at 12:06 am

i dont like this walk to drew for tek

  129. CaptainsCorner August 8th, 2009 at 12:06 am

This is a joke. Why not Coke for Nancy?? Bruney for another batter is dangerous.

  130. Ross (will eat own foot for an end to this game) August 8th, 2009 at 12:06 am

Varitek still resembles a major-league hitter from the right side, so now is not the time to use Coke.

  131. Greg D August 8th, 2009 at 12:06 am

    strike Varisuck out

  132. BR August 8th, 2009 at 12:06 am

Bruney has thrown 30 pitches. what the hell is joe doing? He is going to throw more pitches than aceves

  133. rconn23 August 8th, 2009 at 12:07 am

Hitting Tazawa is not a given at all. He has great control and the Yankees have never seen him before.

Gotta hope Bruney can pull out a mircale.

  134. Josh August 8th, 2009 at 12:07 am

    Bruney won’t get this out

  135. Johnny D. August 8th, 2009 at 12:07 am

At least get someone getting ready Joe!!

  142. Brian M August 8th, 2009 at 12:07 am

It is pretty comical how little respect we have for Varitek now that we’ll walk a guy who is 0-5 and has a .246 average to get to him.

  143. BD 2.0 August 8th, 2009 at 12:07 am

    “BD,

    ————-

    I guess you’re right.

Ortiz can hit the fastball lately when he’s allowed to cheat.

The ump is really squeezing Bruney now.

And seriously, is Coke not available? Because I can’t see any better time to bring him into a game.

  145. Matt August 8th, 2009 at 12:07 am

No, you use Coke lefty on lefty for Drew, who has hit under .200 vs. LHP this year.

I hope to god Bruney gets out of this, but he’s showing the tell tale signs of fatigue- falling behind, missing spots. Hopefully it doesn’t blow up in his face.

Thank god Bruney got out of that, but Girardi is really, really, really dumb.

Bruney approaching FORTY pitches, and he is falling behind on EVERY hitter and missing his spots by a lot. That is when you have to have someone warming up in the pen.

What was going to happen if he walked Varitek? Would you seriously have let him pitch with the bases loaded in a 0-0 game in the 14th with his pitch count that high and that many signs of fatigue?

If not for Varitek bailing him out, Girardi could have looked really, really bad there.

  221. CB August 8th, 2009 at 12:11 am

Varitek and Papi are just shells of what they were.

It’s really amazing how bad they are.

Neither one has any bat speed at all.

They can’t even get any lift off of a decent fastball anymore.

Anything they do is off guessing and getting lucky.

Gutty outing by Bruney there. He was tired and really struggling.

Now is not the time for the yankees to struggle with a pitcher they’ve never seen.

Brutal spot for a rookie who has spent less than one year in the minors and is from another country to make his pro debut – especially against one of his idols.

This game could be some way to introduce Tazawa to the league.

No pressure, your entire pitching staff has just produced 13 scoreless innings to try to stop our biggest rivals from running away with the division.

Huge momentum game either way, and a must win for the Sox with Sabathia going tomorrow . No pressure rook.

  280. Matt August 8th, 2009 at 12:16 am

In this kind of game, you have to have guys ready to back them up, especially when they get to that kind of pitch count. No BBFan, I said that AFTER the groundout, because despite the lucky result, Girardi still made what could have been a game losing mistake by not having someone ready to back up Bruney in that inning.

The Red Sox have nobody in their bullpen left, that’s one thing. Girardi has Coke, Melancon, and Robertson. Someone has to be warming up.

The Red Sox bull pen is the one that is going to be absolute toast tomorrow.

As it is they try to avoid using papelbon in back to back games to save his shoulder. Tonight he threw the longest stint he’s thrown in a long time.

So effectively they might only have a 6 man pen tomorrow.

Saito also isn’t a high workload guy.

They will have to send Tazawa back to the minors and call up another arm.

  628. Matt August 8th, 2009 at 12:38 am

    WHAT A SHOCK.

Girardi is just so stupid. He refuses to bunt with guys like Melky, and then he’s sacrificing his #2 hitter with no outs and a guy up there who lefties are DESTROYING.

He would have taken the bat out of Teixeira’s AND Damon’s hands and given it to a slumping A-Rod. Girardi just gave away an at bat from one of our best hitters! WOW.

  629. M August 8th, 2009 at 12:38 am

  675. Matt August 8th, 2009 at 12:41 am

Bunting in that spot turned around the entire inning.

Struggling pitcher, lefties crushing him, 2-3-4 coming up, and Damon, the master of short home runs over the fence.

Girardi had a guy who is the king of hitting cheap HR in this park SACRIFICE with the winning run on base. Can it get any dumber than that?

Girardi manages the right way, and this game is over in regulation because of Melky bunting, and now him having Damon bunt probably extends it even more.

  676. CB August 8th, 2009 at 12:41 am

With a pitcher who is struggling as badly as Tazawa is, a pitcher who is hanging on for dear life on every pitch why give him an out. Why just hand him 1/3 of the opportunity that you have to score a run.

wasn’t me it was a good one though
    Josh Beckett wrote it

  776. Doreen August 8th, 2009 at 12:46 am

And of course, now, I’m wide awake!

Glad this one was on YES – postgame.

Question, if it was FOX or ESPN, would they have stuck with a 5 adn 3/4 hour game??

  777. rconn23 August 8th, 2009 at 12:46 am

Without question the most important part of tonight’s game – even though it seemed like it happened last year – was Burnett pitching mano on mano with Beckett in a huge game.

    Great job by A.J.

  778. Greg D August 8th, 2009 at 12:47 am

Alex didn’t quite know how to answer that one.

  786. E-gawa August 8th, 2009 at 12:47 am

    Great game.

What’s even better is that they have 5 inning Buchholz pitching tomorrow and an overworked pen.

    We have CC!

  787. The Phranchise August 8th, 2009 at 12:48 am

PL saw that too. As long as this game was if I am Girardi, Alex DH’s tomorrow or gets a day off regardless….. if he’s smart.

  800. RS August 8th, 2009 at 12:49 am

Arod has hit a bunch of clutch homeruns this year.

This one against Boston, the walkoff against Minnesota, two against Seattle in the 7th and 8th inning, and the game-tying one off Lidge.

  801. Johnny D. August 8th, 2009 at 12:49 am

Wow. It was getting crazy waiting for the Yankees to score. Another meaningless, stat padding homerun from ARod. He never gets them when they are needed.

This is a heartbreaking game for any team that loses it, even more when this extends a streak of losses.

Glad the Yankees are on the winning side.

Bucholz who can’t go deep, Francona used his whole pen tonight.

Set up well for tomorrow’s game

  817. Jeremy August 8th, 2009 at 12:50 am

This is devestating for the Sox. Now they are in real trouble. Their pen is devestated, and Hughes and Rivera only threw a few pitches. They can still be used.

  818. RDM August 8th, 2009 at 12:50 am

You can just tell, this Yank team is so different. And, different in a great way.

Has Alex EVER hit in the clutch like he has this year?

Alex, by the way, seemed to be holding his right hip after coming out of the Yank scrum. It’s probably nothing.

  825. Trixel Vee August 8th, 2009 at 12:51 am

I saw him grab his hip, but then I saw him, lift Tex with da hug so it can’t be that bad. No worries. Maybe his hip brace was slipping off?

  826. Aura August 8th, 2009 at 12:51 am

You know what’s weird? Arod has 6 walkoff HRs with the Yankees and still is considered unclutch. It’s probably because he’s always trying to hit a hr with a chance to win the game and it’s worked 6 times out of a hundred.

  827. CB August 8th, 2009 at 12:51 am

There was just no doubt that if they got those three outs in the top of the 15th Tazawa’s luck was going to end.

You could just see it coming. They were squaring up one ball after another after another after another.

Alex and the yankees pitching staff just plunged a dagger into the heart of the Red Sox.

There is almost no way to describe how devastating this loss is for them given the context.

They are just absolutely reeling and in utter dissarray in their pitching staff.

They lose a heartbreaking 13 inning game to the rays. Heartbreaking. A game they were leading 2-0 in the 8th inning.

They burn through their pen. Then they lose the next day to the rays.

They fly to NY – land at around 4AM.

And then lose to the yankees 13-6 and watch John Smoltz just get pulverized. They have to play inning after inning behind sacrificial lamb billy traber.

And tonight they had their stopper on the mound. They guy they put on the mound and believe they will win behind – especially after a huge loss.

And AJ just throws darts and shuts them down.

In the process they have now completely burnt through their pen again.

And Buchholz is going tomorrow – he has been awful and gives no length.

How can they even pretend to ask him to take one for the team tomorrow when it is an absolute must win for them?

And on top of that they get to fact CC tomorrow.

And a yankee pen that still has an usual rest Rivera and Hughes.

    Brutal loss.

This is the kind of sword championship teams use to finish off their competition.

Alex grabbing his hip was not great. He is due for a rest. They would be smart to sit him or DH him. Put Hairston at third.

For all the dislike they write about Jeter and Arod, Tex and Arod seem to have a very good relationship.

And let me tell you how we’re going to celebrate this win. Your taffy will go in tomorrow’s mail. Michelle’s too.

  852. RS August 8th, 2009 at 12:55 am

This was the best performance from a Yankee bullpen in years, maybe. What were the odds that Hughes, Mo, Aceves, Bruney, and Coke would all come out dealing and throwing strikes?

  862. Aura August 8th, 2009 at 12:57 am

Arod didn’t seem very giddy when being interviewed after the game. I think something’s wrong. He said he was tired 2x and grabbed his hip after the celebration at home plate. Girardi better make sure he’s ok and if he’s not he better sit him for 3 games. The Yanks have a pad now and with Hairston and Pena there’s no reason not to rest him.

  867. The Phranchise August 8th, 2009 at 12:57 am

Francona didn’t burn out his pen??? They used a lot of them during the Rays series and lost which is partially why he just let Traber get trounced yesterday. Paps can’t go more than 4 batters ever. And he used everyone to the end. So when Bucholz goes 5 or less tomorrow he will have to use 4 more bullpen guys tomorrow for another game on Sunday.

  868. fashionfinancier August 8th, 2009 at 12:57 am

Boys will always be boys, it seems. I love that energy, seeing everyone cheer each other on. I think baseball is one of the few sports that does it anymore.

I was just at a bar here in Boston (through innings 10-13) and holy crap i was getting annoyed. I won’t lie, it’s a beautiful beautiful thing. =)

    Let’s go yanks!!

which was good they needed work. And the only one that we were really concerned about was Ace and praying Bruney just didn’t allow one. Tomorrow Melancon, D-Rob, Cokey,Yuuussses and Mo.

Girardi is genius in managing the bullpen today.
Inspite of this long game we have our two best pitchers in BP avialble for tomorrow.
Also we will have Robertson and Guadin or Melancon rested and availble. With CC pitching we may not need more than one or two from the BP.

Res Sox are really shot in the BP. They had a tough series for the BP with Rays and then today. They need to make some moves for tomorrow.

it’s pretty amazing that a troll who claimed for 4 hours that the Yankees would lose this game would continue to spew nonsense after they win.

both managers handled the game exactly the same except Francona burned his bullpen completely. Aceves throwing 3 innings made sure that didn’t happen, you have to give him tons of credit.

it was a difficult night for decisions and most of that was due to the pitching, which, except for Tarzawa, was incredible. Both AJ and Beckett pitched so well it might not have mattered what either team did with men on base, no one really hit the ball hard at all off AJ and Beckett was really tough when the Yankees did get some runners on. Overall, a great, great ballgame and the Yankees hopefully follow this up with another win later today.

CC is due for a domination.

Can Bucky pull one out of his tuchas? Doubtful, but you never know. If he pitches to his 09 performance, the Sox are going to have to call up a AAA or AA pitcher out of the “deepest pitching staff in baseball” to help him out. Wait, you mean there not all that deep? What bad luck for the Sox. In the last 5 games Penny, Smoltz, and Buchholz have failed to go more than 5 innings, and the two games Lester and Beckett pitched brilliantly in ended up going to extra innings, both of which the Sox lost.
It can’t get more frustrating than that.

Anyway, postscript showed that all the yayhoo talk about pitchers beaning hitters was as ridiculous as it sounded.

Credit to Beckett for throwing a clean and tremendous game. I expected nothing less. After all, a team fighting for its life doesn’t think like the run of the mill fan…

    AJ was just tremendous.

  913. The Phranchise August 8th, 2009 at 1:03 am

KROd blowing another game. That team is just pathetic.

So a week or so ago, we kept hearing about the deep Boston pitching, so many arms that they could make deals to get everyone and their brother. Depth at AAA. A week later Smoltz released, Penny stinks once again, they trade away their middle relief guy with no replacement, Bucholz the stud everyone wants has a series of bad starts, their other much hyped offseason Japanese pitcher looks mediocre at best. The line drives off of Tazawa reminded me of the ones you saw off of Igawa. The offspeed pitches get minor league guys out but you need something more. What is so great about Tazawa?????

“Into the empty Sox pen really is the cherry on top.”

I was thinking exactly the same thing.

    How fittingly symbolic.

It’s amazing that the game transpired the way it did.

For much of this year we were told everywhere that the Red Sox pen was going to be a substantial differentiator between these teams.

The Red Sox pen would help them win. The yankees pen was unfixable and utterly untrustworthy. It would be the irreparable laceration that would bleedn the yankees dry. The Red Sox pen was near invincible.

And on this night – on a game that the Red Sox absolutely had to win the yankees pen is brilliant and beats the Red Sox pen.

The irony of it is just remarkable.

why would you want Rays and Rangers to win? it doesnt benefit the Yankees because they would be 1 game closer to them

  921. Pepitone August 8th, 2009 at 1:05 am

Let’s not forget the great job that bullpen did, from Hughes to Bruney, they kept the Sox off the board giving their team a chance to win the ballgame, great, great, great job by that pen!

Also, although he did not have a great game with the bat, remember how many great defensive plays Teixeria had, he has been unbelievably valuable this year.

Finally, how about the great at bats our guys had, making Beckett throw more pitches than he would have liked.

I agree, Girardi having Damon bunt was not wise, but, one mistake for the entire game? I’ll take it!

That team is so together as a group it is like night and day when compared with the Red Sox this year. I agree, CB, this just may be it for the Red Sox for 2009. We survived their best pitcher, had a mediocre game with the bats, and still we win the game!

    This team is special!

  948. CB August 8th, 2009 at 1:11 am

We’ve heard all year – by mediots like francesa and madden – and also saddly by yankee fans who the Red Sox “were just the better team.”

How they were just the inimitable, top rung organization. They had “replaced” the yankees.

These Red Sox with the “clutch” youk, pedroia, and bay were the new version of the 90′s yankee dynasty.

They were incomparable and the “choking, underachieving” yankee team was never going to measure up.

    0-8!!!!11!!!! 0-8!!!1!!

We heard all year that the yankees just “can’t beat” the sox.

And all that has been shown to be what it truly was.

Media hype. And misanthropy on the part of yankee fans.

What we saw tonight and yesterday – is the better team tearing the heart out of its lesser foe.

All the yankees needed to do was to split this series.

    Mission accomplished.

Sox have Detroit, Jays and Rangers before facing us again. We have Oakland, Jays and the Mariners. The Yankees can really put the Red Sox in a world of hurt and in the rearview mirror if they pull out some more wins in this series.

Sox and Rays have two more series against each other in Sept.

The Yankees will be in great shape if they finish out this month strong.

  960. j2 August 8th, 2009 at 1:15 am

On A-rod grabbing his hip, I think he was kidding around–as in “don’t beat on me too much, remember my hip” when he was trying to run through the pile at home plate. That was my impression, in any case.

  961. 77513 August 8th, 2009 at 1:15 am

    Great win by the yankees.

Another good sign was Bruney in his first inning of work was overpowering that looked like the Brian Bruney before the dl, Bruney is basically a 1 inning reliever. 2nd inning he got in a little jam but he got out of it. If Bruney gets back to pitching like he did in the beginning of the season the yankees have the best bullpen in baseball.

Great job by the entire bullpen

  962. The Ghost August 8th, 2009 at 1:15 am

Betsy, I’m not writing off the Sox either. Billy Bats died easier in Goodfellas than they went down tonight. Let’s not turn this Sox team into the 2009 Mets, they are down two starters and their MVP in this series. I think Girardi outmanaged Francona tonight for the first time I can remember. Francona managed desperate usually that’s Girardi’s role.

  963. lloyd August 8th, 2009 at 1:15 am

What a game. What a win. Win of the season. Maybe this will get Alex Rodriguez going now. Also, have to say what a job by the pitching staff, and what a job by Brian Bruney. I have hated on this guy big time in the past but he really stepped up tonight and showed what he can do what he has his head on straight. In any case, CC Sabathia can REALLY possibly put a nail in Boston’s coffin tomorrow. If he shuts them down the Yanks get another W, the Red Sox might not sniff first again.

  964. PittsburghYankeeFan August 8th, 2009 at 1:16 am

    Boston is a mess.

The big news from NESN and WEEI ?
“we will bring you the Big Papi press conference live tomorrow”.

They are worried about old news! they have more urgent things to worry about –

Bay is hurt. SS is a mess. They need Buchholz to give them length. The Bullpen is taxed. Smoltz is gone and now they have to wonder if Tazawa is ready.

On NESN they just asked the fans how worried they were – on a scale of 1-10, this one guy answered 12. LOL

  982. G. Love August 8th, 2009 at 1:21 am

One of the strangest games I’ve been to in years. What’s with the crazy Friday night games this season.

The Mets game where Castillo dropped the ball and now this one.

I was exhausted by the time the game ended. I can only imagine what the players were feeling.

AJ earned his stripes tonight. I don’t know if you guys saw it on TV but he gave a really long cap tip to the crowd who were showering him with love.

If Swish made that play in the first he might have been going for a no-no the way he was dealing.

That said, I’m glad we won. I can’t imagine how the team and the fans would feel losing this one.

As for the Red Sox? Their pen is toast for the weekend and their new savior from the vaunted system looked downright pedestrian in Tazawa. I realize it’s his first game but I didn’t see anything remotely eye opening from him stuff wise.

His breaking ball looked like Smoltz’s.

And this is the guy Gammons called a better free agent signing than CC?

Ace and Bruney deserve a ton of love too. Our pen stepped up HUGE.

Felt bad for Hinske since I thought that ball was dropping that Drew snagged.

Arod was pointing to his hip a lot in the scrum after the celebration. Girardi needs to sit him tomorrow.

Let’s hope we knock Laptops out of the game by the 4th tomorrow. Having to go to the pen early tomorrow for the Red Sox could effectively end their season and ruin their chances for the wild card as they will be paying for it all week long with a spent pen and rookie starter on Tuesday again.

  983. The Phranchise August 8th, 2009 at 1:21 am

You should both be writing them off. 2 good pitchers and all the rest are terrible. No Papi. No Manny. Papelbon struggling often. Many core players hurt. Varitek is old. They’re terribly done. The only thing not stopping them this season is the Yankees resting on their laurels like you know they are going to do in typical fashion.

    dennis,

again – thanks for the posts. we really do appreciate them.

my comments were really primarily directed at other yankee fans.

It’s not even so much about the sox – but about the ship jumping and misanthropy shown by too many spoiled yankee fans who have no patience or long term vision.

It’s a very tough time for you guys – I said this to Brian before – you guys have a very good team. That hasn’t changed.

The biggest thing right now is whether you get back Wakefield soon. To me that’s the key piece for you guys now. If you do the team will stabilize. The other key piece, unfortunately, becomes buchholz. He’ll have to step up.

If those things happen you’re team is going to right itself very quickly.

The substance doesn’t change. The perceptions do.

Too many yankee fans have gotten far too caught up in perception.

You yourself have had a better eye on what the yankees were than many yankee fans.

Despite the 15 inning game, both bullpens are in decent shape.

Boston used guys for only 1 inning. None of their relievers threw more than 25 pitches. Bard/Papelbon/Ramirez threw under 20. Everyone should be available for them.

For us, Hughes/Rivera will be available. Robertson and Melancon will as well. Bruney/Aceves/Coke probably won’t be.

Sox pen is not in good shape.

Most of their guys are one inning pitchers. Two games ago they had to use 6 relief pitchers again in a game. Why do you think they left Traber in so long yesterday????

They also have Bucholz going tomorrow who hasn’t gone any sort of distance at all since coming back up.

Yankees pen in great shape. Hughes one batter, Mo will be there, Mleancon and Robertson not even used and CC on the mound who goes deep into games

Pete i’m sorry i’m a big yankees fan and am trying to enjoy the win in this great great game but AROD was clearly grabbing his hip and in discomfort at the end of that HR. For none of u journalist to ask about it in the post game press conference is just a terrible job. now i have to wait til tomorrow until i read that he was hurt. the question is how bad?

See the report below on Tazawa before he got signed, that scout should be fired.

The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports that the Braves have offered Japanese right-hander Junichi Tazawa an MLB contract.
So far the Braves appear to be the only team that’s made him a concrete offer, but the Red Sox are expected to soon follow suit. The newspaper quotes “one major league team official” comparing Tazawa to Tim Hudson “with a better curveball,” but even Hudson was still in the minors as a 22-year-old.
