Game 110: Red Sox at Yankees, Part II

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Aug 08, 2009 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Another close game as the late innings approach. Please, baseball gods, not 15 innings again.

UPDATE, 6:36 p.m.: Nice job by Clay Buchholz, two runs over six innings. The Red Sox have to be happy with that against the Yankees in this park.

UPDATE, 6:42 p.m.: Well, that was retaliation for either last night or Pedroia on Friday. Either way, Ramirez is out. Francona about to go, too.

UPDATE, 6:45 p.m.: Now the question is whether the Yankees drill somebody. I would think they would and then we could get a brawl.

UPDATE, 7:02 p.m.: You have to assume that Cano will hit with RISP at some point, right? It’s staggering how bad he is. It’s clearly a mental thing for him now.

Yankees 3-0 and CC back out there. Umpire Jim Joyce went out to speak to him before he warmed up. An unofficial warning perhaps?

Might CC be out there to plunk somebody and take the hit? Yankees have somebody warming up.

UPDATE, 7:10 p.m.: Nope, no retaliation. The big man gets two outs and gets pulled at 123 pitches. Hughes in to pitch. Crowd gave CC a big ovation and then we got “Huuuuuuuuuuuuuuughes” for the second straight night.

Phil warming up to Cyanide by Metallica. All the relievers coming out to Metallica now.

UPDATE, 7:20 p.m.: Jeter just hit a 315-foot home run into the right-field corner. Yankees 5-0. He has 12 homers and nine of them have been to right field here. He had 11 homers all last season.

This saves Mo now.

UPDATE, 7:32 p.m.: Yankees will have a nice rested bullpen behind Andy Pettitte tomorrow night as they go for the four-game sweep.

Back later with clubhouse reaction.

    Nice job ZZ.

  2. minnesota yankee fan August 8th, 2009 at 6:35 pm

    Derek is awesome!

  3. Laura - Ortiz needs more shakes! August 8th, 2009 at 6:35 pm

They better not play another 15 innings. I still haven’t recovered from the first 15.

  4. SJ44 August 8th, 2009 at 6:36 pm

Time for Hughes and Mo to get 6 outs.

    Great job by CC today.

Insurance runs would also be nice but, if they don’t get them, still gotta close the deal.

  5. Portland, OR August 8th, 2009 at 6:36 pm

Well, that won’t show up in the box score tomorrow.

  6. BD 2.0 August 8th, 2009 at 6:36 pm

“I love how pumped Tex gets when there’s a great play made.”

    ———–

    me too.

    Tex is great.

I don’t need anything for Christmas this year.

  7. Abdababdaserser August 8th, 2009 at 6:36 pm

I don’t know how Jeter made that. Too bad he didn’t step on that ugly head.

  8. James G August 8th, 2009 at 6:37 pm

CC should be done. Hughes for the 8th and Mo for the 9th. Go for the sweep tomorrow night.

  9. CB August 8th, 2009 at 6:37 pm

CC is not an ACE !!!111!!!!!!!!!!!!

CC really stepped up there in a big way.

He was running on fumes that inning.

His location was really starting to go. But he got it back together and did what was needed.

Now Hughes for the 8th and Mo for the 9th.

They really need a couple of more runs.

  10. Scott August 8th, 2009 at 6:38 pm

    I wouldn’t mind another 15 inning game

The Sux bullpen is exhausted and we have a fresh Josh Towers available.

  11. Abdababdaserser August 8th, 2009 at 6:38 pm

The Puke looks pitiful out there in left.

  12. BD 2.0 August 8th, 2009 at 6:38 pm

“They really need a couple of more runs.”

    ————-

while they could certainly use a couple more.

let’s face it – the Sox offense is struggling and may not score again until next week

  13. Trevor August 8th, 2009 at 6:38 pm

lol @ Damon keeps hitting the ball towards Youkilis.

  14. Joe from Long Island August 8th, 2009 at 6:38 pm

  15. m August 8th, 2009 at 6:40 pm

  23. Laura - Ortiz needs more shakes! August 8th, 2009 at 6:42 pm

    That was blatant.

  24. Same Old August 8th, 2009 at 6:42 pm

Buchholz allowed 11 baserunners in 6 IP. He was lucky, nothing more, nothing less.

  25. Abdababdaserser August 8th, 2009 at 6:42 pm

Joe from LI, I agree with that. I think that is another reason he was signed for a longer deal.

    Good, toss the jerk.

One throw at the head of Tex.

  26. Mike August 8th, 2009 at 6:42 pm

    Its a 2-0 game!!

How can that be an ejection???

  27. MIL August 8th, 2009 at 6:42 pm

Uh, FOX, lets here what the ump was saying…you got him miked!

  28. YankeesLuv August 8th, 2009 at 6:42 pm

    Sox must pay!

  29. minnesota yankee fan August 8th, 2009 at 6:42 pm

    what happened? I blinked!

  30. DT - OPPC member (blood type - Positive) August 8th, 2009 at 6:42 pm

this is big with the Sox bullpen pretty gassed this week.

  31. SJ44 August 8th, 2009 at 6:42 pm

You win this game and then tomorrow night, somebody has to take it to a Sox hitter.

That will put an end to it.

Winning the game is the priority. If they win that, somebody eats a baseball tomorrow night.

  32. Ross (sacrificed a foot on the altar of A-Rod) August 8th, 2009 at 6:42 pm

    That’s karma right there. Fantastic.

  33. Trevor August 8th, 2009 at 6:42 pm

I thought the up and in on Teixiera was intentional.

  34. nyydj2 August 8th, 2009 at 6:43 pm

these announcers suck so bad, only themselves cannot “argue with their logic”. pathetic

  35. DT - OPPC member (blood type - Positive) August 8th, 2009 at 6:43 pm

  37. Mike August 8th, 2009 at 6:43 pm

    At the head of Tex….

    It was HIGH!!

  38. m August 8th, 2009 at 6:43 pm

Oops. Quick trigger, but the Sox control has been bad all game. It was only a matter of time.

This tells you there was warnings.

  39. Awww. August 8th, 2009 at 6:43 pm

    Why did he do that?

    Not understanding.

  40. stuart August 8th, 2009 at 6:43 pm

in calif do not have the game what happened?????????????

  41. Matt August 8th, 2009 at 6:43 pm

That was the 2nd time they blatantly threw at A-Rod in this game.

The Red Sox and Red Sox sympathizers (McCarver and Buck) have no argument here. Buchholz threw way up and in and almost hit him, and now Ramirez threw one blatantly at his back after buzzing Teixeira way up and in near his head.

He intentionally hit the guy, and according to the rule, if you do that you are ejected from a game. You don’t need a warning, you don’t need a reason, you are gone. Dumb spot to retaliate though, especially considering they are putting key insurance runs on base in doing so.

  42. Abdababdaserser August 8th, 2009 at 6:44 pm

Just an up and in pitch? It was in the friggin’ batters box, right near the head.

    Toss the chipmunk faced FranCOMA.

  43. Joe from Long Island August 8th, 2009 at 6:44 pm

You know, when Jim Joyce cleaned off home plate a moment before, he looked up and said something directly to Martinez.

I wonder if that related to the high and inside to Tex, and, ultimately, to Ramirez being thrown out there for hitting Alex.

  44. Mike August 8th, 2009 at 6:44 pm

Come on, Yankee fans…it was a 2-0 game.

    Spare me.

  45. G August 8th, 2009 at 6:44 pm

    watch it on sticktv.net

  46. Avinash August 8th, 2009 at 6:44 pm

Why does Francona spit so much when talking to the umps? Geez.

  47. G August 8th, 2009 at 6:44 pm

last time i saw it bot 8 3-2 LA

  48. SJ44 August 8th, 2009 at 6:44 pm

And the Red Sox, I mean FOX Announcers can’t believe Arod was intentionally drilled. That’s pretty funny.

That’s baseball and that’s how it goes.

Like I said, the priority is winning this game. Win this, and no matter what is happening tomorrow night, pick a Sox hitter and nail him.

That will put an end to it.

  51. tj August 8th, 2009 at 6:45 pm

The Red Sox and Red Sox sympathizers (McCarver and Buck) have no argument here. Buchholz threw way up and in and almost hit him

It was a curveball that got away. Doesn’t Gameday tell you that?

Case in point on why people only watching gameday don’t know what they’re talking about.

  52. Tarheelyank August 8th, 2009 at 6:45 pm

    SJ
I agree. And this Joe isn’t the old Joe either.

  53. Vrsce August 8th, 2009 at 6:45 pm

Buck and McCarver do not think the eject is justifiable.
However the pitcher just missed Tex and was involved on Thursday. So it is obvious why.

  54. RalphieD (OPPC) YES Radar Gun=Terrible August 8th, 2009 at 6:45 pm

how can they bring this guy in…dont they want to win?

  55. m August 8th, 2009 at 6:45 pm

    oops. There *were* warnings.

Ramirez jealous because Kate Hudson is his favorite actress?

And why do Buck & mccarver keep repeating the same thing? They can’t get over it.

  56. Laura - Ortiz needs more shakes! August 8th, 2009 at 6:45 pm

I think the ump tossed him because of the one that was close to Tex’s head.

  57. CB August 8th, 2009 at 6:45 pm

I think Jim Joyce “heard” that ball hit Alex there.

The context for Ramirez hitting Alex doesn’t make much sense.

But that pitch sure did look telegraphed.

Love how the ball up and in to Tex was nothing and the ball thrown over Alex’s head was nothing…

But Melancon throwing over Pedroia was an earth shattering event.

  58. BD 2.0 August 8th, 2009 at 6:45 pm

why didnt Fox let us listen to Joyce?

why have him miked if they’re not going to play that?????

    poor.

  59. gianthinker August 8th, 2009 at 6:46 pm

Good he should be tossed! That foul earlier was over Arod’s head, then Ramon throws over Teixeira’s head and then first pitch hit Arod? Go hit the showers. Complain to your teammate for the earlier throw adding up with your two to give you your three strikes, you’re outta here!

  60. DFox August 8th, 2009 at 6:46 pm

Yeah it’s blatantly obvious they wanted to hit A-Rod. Of course the Fox announcers won’t be able to understand that. They conveniently forgot when Buchholz almost hit A-Rod in the head. Both times were obvious, Buchholz just missed.

  61. Trevor August 8th, 2009 at 6:46 pm

Red Sox always throw at Arod. The ump thought it was intentionally. Second time in the game it’s happened.

  62. pedroia's brother touches little people August 8th, 2009 at 6:46 pm

    yawn

  63. Donnie - Will Meet Dustin Pedroia Under the O'Neill Banner August 8th, 2009 at 6:46 pm

I honestly don’t think that was retaliation. You’re only down 2 runs, not out of the game by ANY means, and your team really NEEDS a win, and you’re gonna choose THEN to hit a guy, moving a runner in to scoring position, for one of our best RBI-hitting players? I don’t know that I buy that.

  64. Laura - Ortiz needs more shakes! August 8th, 2009 at 6:46 pm

“Like I said, the priority is winning this game. Win this, and no matter what is happening tomorrow night, pick a Sox hitter and nail him.”

I vote for Pukelis. Can we bring in Joba to take care of that? :P

  65. fashionfinancier August 8th, 2009 at 6:46 pm

To be fair though..what do we think of the ump with the handlebar mustache? can he be trusted..? I don’t know if that throw was actually intentional to hit alex. I’m not that familiar with pitching but is it possible the ball just slipped?

  66. tex's friend August 8th, 2009 at 6:47 pm

a rod already ducked under one earlier. fox needs to get over their bias outrage, stop showing the tex AB and show a-rod’s ab from earlier.

  67. BD 2.0 August 8th, 2009 at 6:47 pm

    pete,

you need to ban “pedroias brother”

I thought you already spoke to him?

Check your sports radio stations, stuart, it’s a national game. It’s on 1050 in the Bay Area.

  69. Wangawa August 8th, 2009 at 6:47 pm

The “why would he throw at him in this situation?” argument is stupid. If a guy wants to throw at a guy he’s going to do it. Joba’s thrown at Youk a ton of times in very close ball games with guys on base.

  70. Carl August 8th, 2009 at 6:47 pm

(this conversation was picked up by someone with high-tech equipment. I don’t know if it’s going to be made public…)

    Phone call for David Ortiz.

    Hi, this is David Ortiz.

Hi, Pappi, I’m calling from the baseball gods union. This conversation is confidential but we know you lied today. You know there’s going to have to be some penalty.

Is that the same as karma? I hear everyone talking about it.

Yeah, it’s the same as karma. You know that you’re going to have to pay some way. And you know that the payback has to be something meaningful. We know the things that mean most to you are the game and food. I can’t promise but I can try to talk to the committee if you want to give us your choice.

Look man. I love the game. But the game is about more than Pappi. You know what I’m saying? Everyone’s got to contribute. But the food man. The food is what makes me go. I can’t be anyone without my food. Look do what you want about the game but the buffet after, if you can help man, don’t make them run out of food when I get there. Okay man? Look I know I made a mistake, but I need my food man.

I’ll see what I can do.

Okay see ya man. See ya.

    ************************************

It’s Raining Karma! Hallelujah! – It’s Raining Karma! Amen!

  74. Drive 4-5 August 8th, 2009 at 6:48 pm

Not once, but twice they came at A Rod’s head.

When’s Joba’s throw day? How ’bout they let him do it during a game… with Youkalis at bat.

  75. bru August 8th, 2009 at 6:48 pm

cc has pitched the most innings in the al & is at 112 now.

girrardi needs to take him out

  76. Trevor August 8th, 2009 at 6:48 pm

They’re frustrated that they suck so they start throwing at Yankees. Typical Boston.

  77. tj August 8th, 2009 at 6:48 pm

why didnt Fox let us listen to Joyce?
why have him miked if they’re not going to play that?????
    poor.

excellent point. because his explaination would have gone against a pro Red Sox point, whereas the Foul ball call on A-Rod went against the Yankees

  78. Abdababdaserser August 8th, 2009 at 6:49 pm

I agree, Joyce gave Martinez warning without making a big deal of it. Both were intentionally done, rather than “getting a little away” from the pitcher.

Where did they get this porker Gonzalez?

  79. CM (MLB needs to use instant replay more) August 8th, 2009 at 6:49 pm

    Good point,tj.

  80. trisha - OPPC lifetime member with ice water in her veins! August 8th, 2009 at 6:49 pm

“werent the teams warned after a-rod’s near plunking in the beginning? thats why i figured ramirez got tossed”

No warning. Jim Joyce went out to the mound and the Chucky doll pulled a knife out. Joyce just walked away without saying anything.

  81. m August 8th, 2009 at 6:49 pm

Another example of the inaccuracy of Gameday. Enrique Gonzalez is not nearly as ugly as his Gameday photo.

LOL. A-rod standing out there so long, he’s doing his yoga exercises.

  82. Tom in N.J. August 8th, 2009 at 6:50 pm

On purpose or not, Ramirez is an idiot.

  83. CB August 8th, 2009 at 6:50 pm

That Tito is going to a Gonzalez in this huge spot tells you how burned out their pen is.

I can’t believe they are going to gonzalez with the season hanging in the balance.

Best pitching depth in the majors all right.

  89. trisha - OPPC lifetime member with ice water in her veins! August 8th, 2009 at 6:51 pm

By the way, notice how Arod just went about his business – twice – while that little dog doodoo Pedey cried a river. In fact, that’s all the little turd ever does.

  90. Orlando Crhis August 8th, 2009 at 6:51 pm

I’m watching on FOX – anybody know if the Yankees went to the rail (of the dugout) on that?

Throwing behind the same batter twice, even if both are “accidental,” which I don’t think it was – is grounds for somebody to be tossed. If they don’t have enough control to keep the ball in the strike zone, they shouldn’t be run out there. Nice call by the ump for not running Tito. Let’s see what happens next.

I don’t expect NYY to hit anybody tonight, wait until tomorrow when Bruney is available….

  138. Matt August 8th, 2009 at 6:59 pm

I don’t buy this argument that “well, why would they want to do it in this kind of game?”

Some of these guys take matters into their own hands. Ramirez threw one way up and in that almost hit Teixeira in the head, and then only a few pitches later hit A-Rod square in the back.

It’s not the smartest time to do it, but he did it. Knowing there were warnings issued, a short bullpen, and a close game, he shouldn’t be dumb enough to risk it, yet he still did.

Ramirez is really going to get chewed out by his teammates today.

    “trisha,

lol. AJ has said that pitching behind CC inspires him at times, but I think in this case CC was able to spot his fastball and he’s had some good defense behind him today.”

m, well that too, of course! :) But you know how the pitchers will say they don’t want to be the one to let down and they have a healthy competition going with each other. I would think that there was also some “I’m gonna save the pen and the position players” in it because he knows what they went through last night. Maybe that stuff adds just a little to their adrenaline or incentive or desire or something.

  183. Tom in N.J. August 8th, 2009 at 7:06 pm

  185. The Phranchise August 8th, 2009 at 7:06 pm

  186. CB August 8th, 2009 at 7:06 pm

    CC still in the game.

I guess Girardi still wants to play the lefty lefty match ups.

    He looked done last inning.

  187. sevencostanza August 8th, 2009 at 7:06 pm

  190. Ross (sacrificed a foot on the altar of A-Rod) August 8th, 2009 at 7:07 pm

Let him at Kotchman. He’s made the man look silly today.

  191. The Phranchise August 8th, 2009 at 7:07 pm

If the ump thinks it was blatant that he hit him, why not eject him. Is a warning a rule or something I wasn’t aware of.

    Five outs to go.

  193. miggs August 8th, 2009 at 7:07 pm

    CC at 120 pitches

  200. m August 8th, 2009 at 7:08 pm

Definitely the last batter. They won’t let him start a batter past 120 pitches.

  201. Corey August 8th, 2009 at 7:08 pm

They had 2 lefties to start this inning…CC has been great…why not?

  202. Rob B August 8th, 2009 at 7:08 pm

Sterling was waxing long-winded about how it didn’t make sense for Ramirez to hit Rodriguez. Taking the one incident by itself, maybe. But that was the third time that a S*x pitcher went up and in on a Yankee: the “foul” ball in Rodriguez’ first AB, the up-and-in on Tex in the 7th right before the 3rd incident, Rodriguez getting beaned.

There is a chain of events. 3 strikes your out. Isn’t that how baseball works?

I think there was another where Bucholz threw over somebody’s head? If he isn’t at least fined, then it’s an injustice. Was it Joba or Burnett who was fined and suspended without even hitting anybody earlier this year?

  203. Patrick August 8th, 2009 at 7:08 pm

I don’t really see the point in complaining about Cano after he goes 3 for 4 today. Kind of silly if you ask me.

  204. Ross (sacrificed a foot on the altar of A-Rod) August 8th, 2009 at 7:08 pm

  214. The Phranchise August 8th, 2009 at 7:09 pm

Wow, at some point you have to just take CC out. And today in the middle of an inning you want an ovation for him, he deserves it

  215. miggs August 8th, 2009 at 7:09 pm

Please take him out. 123 pitches.

    Thank god.

  216. Phil - Definitely not an OPPC member August 8th, 2009 at 7:09 pm

CC still in there to get the lefties…we always complain about pitchers not being allowed to pitch and managers being slave to pitch counts.

I’m not sure what the answer is.

  217. Patrick August 8th, 2009 at 7:10 pm

I don’t really like the idea of stretching CC out even more. Why waste his bullets in this game when a fresh Hughes and Mo are ready in the pen? Seems like a really stupid move.

    Great job by CC though.

  225. The Phranchise August 8th, 2009 at 7:11 pm

    Terriffic call by Girardi there.

Do you let Hughes take four outs today? Or at least let him try the ninth and if he puts someone on then pull him?

  226. trisha - OPPC lifetime member with ice water in her veins! August 8th, 2009 at 7:11 pm

“it was really important to take a gamebreak there. thanks fox.”

They are notorious for that stupidity.

  227. Spider_Ham August 8th, 2009 at 7:11 pm

Ridiculous, that man is amazing. What a wonderful pick up. It’s great to see all three of them coming into their comfort zones.

  228. m August 8th, 2009 at 7:11 pm

Nice of Joe to pull him in the middle of an inning so he could get a nice ovation. :)

I wouldn’t get too excited about the pitch count. He hardly labored today.

  229. Rob B August 8th, 2009 at 7:11 pm

Also, I don’t think CC or any other starter should even think about “getting even.” It isn’t just a possible ejection from the game. Ejection or no, any drilling of a S*x player, and the offending pitcher is in danger of a suspension. I don’t want to see the Yankees risk losing CC or Pettitte for even 1 turn through the rotation.

CC is out of the game now, though, so at least he can’t risk a suspension.

  230. Terry from NH August 8th, 2009 at 7:11 pm

Hughes and Mo pitched last night.. So not sure if “fresh” is the word, but they didn’t throw alot of pitches last night.

  231. JOJO August 8th, 2009 at 7:11 pm

why even drill tomorrow? we have a chance for a sweep that would bury the Sox. the umps will probably issue warnings before the game tomorrow. Why risk waking the Sox up plus getting a pitcher suspended when we’re on a roll? we can retaliate at another time. let’s just complete the sweep and move on.

  232. BD 2.0 August 8th, 2009 at 7:11 pm

  235. Patrick August 8th, 2009 at 7:11 pm

By the way, MG, did you think CC looked like an ace in this game? If I recall correctly you are one of the guys in here saying that he’s not an ace. He certainly looked like one today :)

  236. CB August 8th, 2009 at 7:12 pm

This offseason the yanee’s bet the farm on CC and AJ.

And they bet the farm on them to be able to compete inside of a brutal AL East.

You can’t give them enough credit.

Not only did they give the team excellence – they gave the team tremendous length.

    Just wonderful performances.

When was the last time the yankees could throw out two pitchers like CC and AJ back to back against the Sox.

    Just tremendous.

  237. RDM August 8th, 2009 at 7:12 pm

  239. SJ44 August 8th, 2009 at 7:12 pm

    Patrick,

Agree re: Cano. He has been great today and had a good AB. Nothing to complain about.

That folks is why CC Sabathia is an ace. Innings and dominance when you need a big outing.

To me, nobody should be throwing at Red Sox hitters today.

Win this game and win this series.

Tomorrow night, regardless of the game situation, you put Bruney in the game to face Youkilis and you have him drill him right between the numbers.

You hit our cleanup hitter, we hit yours.

That’s the way to do it.

  240. JOJO August 8th, 2009 at 7:12 pm

hughes pitched to one batter last night and didn’t pitch on friday. he should be fresh. and mo is mo.

  241. The Phranchise August 8th, 2009 at 7:12 pm

  242. Joe August 8th, 2009 at 7:12 pm

Earlier in this game, McCarver called Eli Manning Peyton. He had to be corrected.

Why does AJ get a “good chunk of credit” for CC’s performance? AJ doesn’t get credit. CC gets the credit for locating his pitches, staying with his fastball, and giving them length. AJ only gets credit last night. It is laughable that CC needs AJ to motivate a good performance out of him. CC is a professional.

There is zero chance Hughes gets the nod over Mo in a save situation. A newbie to the pen vs the Hall of Famer? Come on…this isn’t a video game. A big series against the Sox requires Enter Sandman.

  290. Ross (sacrificed a foot on the altar of A-Rod) August 8th, 2009 at 7:18 pm

I occasionally look at Sosh, because it makes me happy when they lose.

What’s really interesting is that the unanimous opinion of the forum is that the umpire was paid off by the Yankees and that McCarver and Buck can’t get enough of them pinstripers.

Funny what a different perspective will do to a frustrated baseball fan.

  291. Matt August 8th, 2009 at 7:18 pm

Since CC had so many innings early in the game with runners on base, he most likely did not have to work as hard to get some of those outs. That means that pushing him a few extra pitches didn’t necessarily wear him out as much as one would think.

If he had a few long at bats there though and had to fight his way to get outs, you could have seen some signs of fatigue. However, with easy outs, he had a little extra left in the tank.

  292. CB August 8th, 2009 at 7:19 pm

Today we really saw vintage CC.

The idea that CC was only successful last year was due to him being in the “weaker division” of the NL is laughable.

He has great stuff. Not good. Great.

9k’s and 2 BB. Just ridiculous. The combination of controlled power is just awesome.

His average fastball today was 95 mph. That was his aveage velocity.

Last night I said I wanted CC to come in today and pound the zone with heat.

    He did exactly that.

And the sox just had nothing in the way of a response.

CC had the oportunity to step on the exposed neck of the Sox.

    And he did.

  293. Abdababdaserser August 8th, 2009 at 7:19 pm

  294. Scott August 8th, 2009 at 7:19 pm

    And he’s using Gonzalez?

  329. Tom in N.J. August 8th, 2009 at 7:24 pm

BD, Maybe because it was Gonzalez’s day to pitch in AAA. In other words he was fresh?

  330. Ben August 8th, 2009 at 7:25 pm

    Note to Fox:
If it’s ruled a homerun, and isnt argued, then showing the same replay over and over where the ball clearly hits the foul screen isnt going to change the call.

  331. Forntoso August 8th, 2009 at 7:25 pm

For a team that is “desperate”, Francona sure hasn’t managed like it the past 2 days.

  332. CB August 8th, 2009 at 7:25 pm

“Does Francona actually want to win this game?

How can he leave Gonzalez out there for another inning?”

    BD,

You know what the thing is – he brought Gonzalez in the inning prior in a much higher leverage situation.

So there was no doubt he was pitching this inning as well.

Down 2-0 in the 7th I’d guess the Sox had around a 30% chance to win.

And Tito actually decided to fold his cards when Ramirez got tossed and bring in Gonzalez.

I think he had Ramirez available on usual workload. But bringing anyone else in would have been taxing their arms.

Basically Tito decided he was going to save all of his resources in order to fend off the sweep tomorrow.

That was his calculus. We’re probably going to lose today so I better make sure I have weapons available to avoid disaster tomorrow.

Just amazing a yankee sox series in August in a heated penant race could come to this for Boston.

Can’t really fault him for that with this particular HR. I thought the same thing.

  336. Donnie - Will Meet Dustin Pedroia Under the O'Neill Banner August 8th, 2009 at 7:26 pm

“Sterling: “That ball is gone – no it’s a base hit, now they’re calling it a HR”

Can we get new radio announcers?”

That’s…what happened. Anyone watching the game would have said the same thing. The ball carried, looked like it was going over, hit the bar coming off the side of the foul pole, which is right at the top of the wall, and came back on the field. Drew fielded it and threw it in, and Molina stopped at third. When it hit the infield, the first base umpire signaled that it was a homerun.

I know people hate Sterling for no adequately explained reason, but complaining about that call amounts to witch hunting.

  342. BD 2.0 August 8th, 2009 at 7:27 pm

    CB,

    that’s the thing.

Francona threw in the towel in this game.

I never thought I’d see that.

They have already had to make so many roster moves that their hands are tied.

I still thought there was a better choice than Gonzalez.

But as we all know now, that pitching depth they had was a figment of NESPN’s imagination.

  343. m August 8th, 2009 at 7:28 pm

mel – my guess is that Joe wants Phil fresh for tomorrow’s game in case Andy can’t give a lot of innings. He probably used Ace a little longer than he wanted to last night and definitely doesn’t want to mess with Ace’s shoulder.

    Totally a guess of course.

“But as we all know now, that pitching depth they had was a figment of NESPN’s imagination.”

The thing I really wonder about is whether it was possible that Theo and the front office really bought into the fiction.

Organizations in all sorts of fields do those kinds of things.

And they usually pay for it. Reality and probability have a way of crashing into the best laid myths.

Could Theo really have thought that Dice-K (regression), Wakefield (age/ health), Penny (being penny), Smoltz (age/injury) and Buchholz (poor performance) not have huge question marks?

Did the organization finally start buying into their own self-generated falsehoods?

this game shouldnt even be as close as it is. 22 left on base? still gotta get that cleaned up if we want to be functioning on all cylinders.

but so far so good, we wanted to take 3 of 4, so tomorrow is really playing with house money.

  384. BD 2.0 August 8th, 2009 at 7:36 pm

    CB,

I really think the Sox front office thought they were in great shape depth wise.

I know they were worried about the offense but I don’t think they were concerned with their pitching.

The fact that both have become major problems is too much for them to fix in a short period of time.

With a thin free agent market coming up, it may be a while before the Sox can match up with the retooled Yanks.

  385. igotid88 August 8th, 2009 at 7:37 pm

Has Girardi loss trust in Hughes? I know, I know he hasn’t.

  386. CB August 8th, 2009 at 7:37 pm

    “Headscratching going on here.

    Where’s Phil?”

Girardi made the right decision. The probability of the Sox winning this game is miniscule.

Girardi is playing to try to be able to go for the sweep tomorrow.

Andy’s been great but i don’t think you can count on him for length against the Sox.

I think Phil will be available tomorrow.

    So will Mo.

As long as you have mo warm you can go batter to batter with the with Robertson.

  391. Joe from Long Island August 8th, 2009 at 7:38 pm

FWIW, I think this inning is important in the development of David Robertson. He’s learning that throwing strikes, even if there are hits, is a good thing. If you throw strikes, they miss or can make out.

That’s some great pitching by Robertson. He threw 5 fastballs to a guy that can’t catch up. Started with his low velocity at 87 and kept throwing it harder and harder. 87, 93, 94, 95, 95 on the corner. Great pitching.

  415. Jeremy August 8th, 2009 at 7:41 pm

“I don’t know their system as well as the yankees, but there is actually not a whole lot there as far as upper level arms.”

    ———–

the Sox are always on the list of top farm systems and I am constantly trying to figure that out.

they do have some decent depth, but they just didnt have the premium quality guys to match up with other systems.

Bowden may be a major league starter but he doesn’t look close to being a game-changer.

Josh Beckett can ask for the WORLD from the Sox in a year, and they have to give it to him.

If he wants a monster contract, they are going to have to pony up.

    they have no choice.

  423. CB August 8th, 2009 at 7:42 pm

That’s why you take a chance and don’t use Phil in that inning.

Now the Yankees are unbelievably well set up to sweep tomorrow.

All they need is 6 quality inning from Andy tomorrow.

They’ll be able to piece together the rest of the innings from the pen.

And this gives Robertson the opportunity to gain experience and grow.

Terrific move giving him that inning.

Now they have Mo and Hughes tomorrow.

  424. Hal August 8th, 2009 at 7:43 pm

  425. Merman Thunson August 8th, 2009 at 7:43 pm

    wow, 24 shutout innings.
and maybe it’s wishful thinking on my part, but Robertson and Hughes’ pitches seem to snap and pop really loud in the catchers mitt. Giving me a nice warm feeling of comfort that they are just mowing them down.

  426. Betsy August 8th, 2009 at 7:43 pm

Wow …… 5 1/2 up! This is so much more than I could have expected.

What an unbelievable series – and the scary thing for our rivals is that CC and AJ have come up HUGE. Robertson did a good job, Phil………..man, I am sooooo happy.

This team just has done ALL the little things – amazing, 24 innings of shutout ball against the Sox. I don’t even care what happens tomorrow…….

    CB,

I guess. But if the Yankees didn’t score, they would’ve brought in Rivera, no?

So why not just go straight to Rivera for the 4 out save?

Personally, I would’ve stayed with Hughes cuz he’s so cool. :)

But I know that mo’s chasing history. It’s just that using so many relievers is a peeve of mine. I loved Giradi’s bullpen use last season because he let guys get 3 outs at a time. His mix and match this season is tedious and gives me headaches.

But our record is like 46-1 with a lead after the 6th, so I’ll just shut up now.

    GG tonight.

I thank everyone for noticing John Anderson. I flipped over at 1am to enjoy last night’s victory and was just absolutely stunned.

The other stuff they do, I can understand, they’re just Red Sox fans who use their position to help the team, glorify the team, downplay the Yankees.

Last night, starting with “rare heroics from Arod” to the egregiously sick boli chant kind of put a damper on the win. I couldnt believe the height of unprofessionalism.

    SJJ,
You have some nerve to even suggest hitting Youk after your team drilled time after time the Red Sox hitters this season and throwing over Pedroia’s head and finally hitting him in the shoulder. You act like the bully who thinks that its okay to hurt people but when they stand up to you you dare question them about standing up to you.If your manager wants to play this game then he better be prepared to face the music.

Robertson came into the game with a 5 run lead. If I’m not mistaken, the rules for getting a hold work much like those for getting a save. The Yankees had too big of a lead at that point.

    m,

In general I agree with the idea of using fewer relievers instead of the constant LaRussaesque matchups.

But the thing is – because hughes only faced one batter – and only threw a couple of pitches I think he’ll be available tomorrow even though it’ll be three days in a row.

If Hughes had say thrown enough so that he wouldn’t have been available anyway tomorrow then it’s a different story.

But if you can save him up 5-0 you have to.

Girardi played it right there thank goodness.

You always want to win the today’s game but with the pen winning tomorrow is influenced by how you win today.

They have a good chance to sweep tomorrow.

You are so laughable! Are you and RDM brother and sister? LOL! When a jerk pitcher throws at someones head and then drills someone in the back it is intentional. That said, it will be a retaliation whether SJ says it or not. Youk will get plunked in the back or buttocks. He knows it! He won’t like it, but neither did ARod.

I am sorry to rain on your Red Sox cookies. But just remember that even though the RSox look cooked right now, they aren’t as bad as they look. That said, Tampa sure is playing great. I actually predicted the Rsox for 4th place at the beginning of the year because they have little pitching and poor defense. They have done much better than I thought. But they appear to be headed towards making me clairvoyant.

  469. Greg D August 8th, 2009 at 7:56 pm

I don’t think the Sox are done….this is baseball, there is plenty of time left…..the Yanks have to keep playing well……the Sox had a 13 game lead in August that they blew in the 70′s

I just came back from dinner – and missed Phil. How’d he look? It’s obvious that CC was great – I should have taped this game as obvously it won’t be replayed on YES tonight. I did see Robertson and he did a fine job escaping the 2 on mini-jam. I admit I thought he was going to blow up, but he looked very good closing it out…..so for the criticism I’ve laid on him, I have to credit him when he does well.

I agree with CB re: CC and AJ. They are real horses and they came up with ace-like performances. Again, that is what should scare the other teams…….It looks like the pen is really coming together, with Ace back on track and maybe Robertson growing up

mel think about the reality of this: CC, AJ, Joba, Andy and…and…and the bullpen!

I seriously am not worried about the 5th, meaning I know the Yankees will do what they need to. I am also still on Mitre’s side for another start and it doesn’t hurt that we have Gaudin. Heck if they turned into a tandem for the 5th spot, meaning they each get 3 innings or something, that works too.

When I talk about the reality of it, I mean that although some of us have always seen it as reality, the way they are pitching now has made it a lot more real for people who weren’t totally convinced.

Geeze this is pretty awesome stuff.

  501. Phil August 8th, 2009 at 8:10 pm

“The next week doesn’t get much easier for the Red Sox. ”

Their schedule the past 3 weeks was a real soft spot in the schedule.

All the talk in boston was about how this streak of games against their chief rivals was going to define what the Sox were as a team.

They’ve gone 8 for 76 at the plate over the past 24 innings.

Yankee pitchers have held them to a .105 average over 24 innings during the biggest week of the sox season.

Good thing that the Sox are just the “better” team and that the yankees “can’t” beat Boston otherwise the Sox would have a lot to worry about.

  531. trisha - OPPC lifetime member with ice water in her veins! August 8th, 2009 at 8:21 pm

mel, at the beginning of the season I predicted that the Sux would end up in third place. (And you know I took a lot of hits for it! :) ) Sure a little of it was me taking any kind of shot at them that I can. But at least a part of it was giving props to the Rays. Well the way things are looking right now it just might end up that way. There is not a question in the world that the Suxers are scuffling and they are dealing with a lot if problems with injuries to their rotation, Smoltz not working out, and injuries to some of their players. I know we’ve been there many times so we know how tough it is to compete under those circumstances (though of course we always manage.)

Maybe they will find a way to emerge again, who knows. But it isn’t like they are at full strength and just slumping. They have players down and other plays not getting the job done. And their rotation is really shaky right now.

That is a pretty tall order when you’re not the New York Yankees. And yeah, I sound arrogant. So what. (that wasn’t for you mel; it was more generic and also an aknowledgement of the bravado that I just put out there.)

“they really imploded when matsuzaka blew out his shoulder.”

Betting on Matsuzaka repeating the high wire act he put on last year putting guys on base left and right was a poor bet.

And rather than minimizing that risk they decided to increase their aggregate risk by signing Penny and Smoltz.

    The whole strategy was delusional.

They were harboring massive risk and pretending they had instead minimized their risk through depth.

It was a stunning misreading of the risks a business has exposed itself to. A fundamental misunderstanding of what’s it’s own strengths and weaknesses were in its core “product.”

You know, I don’t know about that. This might be the worst I have seen them, all things considered, in a real long time. And with Jason Bay out of the lineup they all of a sudden appear more flat than ever.

One thing I think is pretty interesting is that Julio Lugo is hitting something like .367 with the Cards.

Flaherty is right. The Red Sox offense has been horrific for the last couple of months.

That’s why they traded for Martinez. They really needed a boost because they haven’t hit for jack.

That said, Yankee pitchers still have to do their thing and pound the strike zone – which they didn’t do so much on Thursday but have done a great job of it since.

    perfect analysis.

The Red Sox believe they are holier than thou and that nothing can touch them.

That’s the major philosophy that they have, and occasionally, it comes back to bite them.

  554. m August 8th, 2009 at 8:29 pm

    DT,

There’s a lot of good bats in that lineup, even without Bay. So, I think this series says a lot of the Yankees. They were determined to get that first win. And when they did, they could sense a change in the momentum. They sensed the Yankees were vulnerable and took full advantage. Unless the Yankees throw away the game tomorrow, I don’t expect the results to be any different tomorrow.

  555. trisha - OPPC lifetime member with ice water in her veins! August 8th, 2009 at 8:29 pm

At least the Yankee players will get good sleep tonight, if they so desire!

  556. CB August 8th, 2009 at 8:29 pm

Let me clarify – the yankees have the 3rd best team ERA in the AL since the all star break.

  557. m August 8th, 2009 at 8:30 pm

    *Red Sox were vulnerable

  558. Sea Net August 8th, 2009 at 8:30 pm

Flarhety said what the rest of the world knows— the Sox offense is in a major slump.

    Christina25-

could you post a photo please?

it’s like when you’re driving behind someone who does something really stupid you drive by them and you just have to look to see what stupid looks like.

  560. R-Tek August 8th, 2009 at 8:32 pm

Sox are a different team in Fenway— their hitters are built for that place. They’ll lick their wounds then go home and crush teams at home and get back in this thing.

We play them in Fenway in 2 weeks. Will be very interesting to see how we do.

  561. CB August 8th, 2009 at 8:32 pm

“Unless the Yankees throw away the game tomorrow, I don’t expect the results to be any different tomorrow.”

    m,

It’s not that dire for them. They are the favorites tomorrow by a good margin.

Lester is a signficant advantage over Andy.

If they loose tomorrow everything is going to come apart.

Tito was saving all of his bullets for tomorrow once he went down by 2 runs.

They really should win that game tomorrow.

  562. L to the 2nd August 8th, 2009 at 8:33 pm

    Like they did to Oakland?

  563. Wait till they come to OUR house AGAIN August 8th, 2009 at 8:34 pm

Boston will definitely get better as they get healthier.

It’s foolish to call this race over. It’s not even close. The injury bug could strike at any time.

  564. BD 2.0 August 8th, 2009 at 8:35 pm

if the Yanks had lost the last 3 games, the last place I’d want to be is on a Sox blog arguing with Sox fans

makes you wonder what is going on in these trolls’ heads

the lights are on… but nobody’s home

  565. Wait till they come to OUR house AGAIN August 8th, 2009 at 8:35 pm

Tomorrow will be tough to win. But where in the position now where I don’t really care if they lose!

Yesterday’s/this morning’s game still has me whistling.

  566. CB August 8th, 2009 at 8:35 pm

“Sox are a different team in Fenway— their hitters are built for that place.”

Agreed. I’ve posted about this several times this year.

Most offenses tend to be better at home. But the sox have an extreme split in production.

Their Right handed batters other than Youkilis seem to all depend on the wall for producing power.

They are a different team at home and on the road.

At home they are one of the better offenses in the league. On the road they are below average – averaging only around 4.6 runs per game (average – 4.7)

  567. jennifer August 8th, 2009 at 8:36 pm

Just got home after a day at the beach. Glad to see we won again. :-) Nice to see CC had a great game.

Heard a clip of Ortiz’s conference. I have to say WHAT A LOAD OF GARBAGE. I haven’t tested positive. Um yeah that is cause you stopped using and you suck now.

  568. L to the 2nd August 8th, 2009 at 8:36 pm

CB Lester is very good but Andy has been pitching great lately – like the 2nd half Andy of old.

If RS offense is in a collective funk I wouldn’t be so sure – agree that Francona threw this game to have all his bullets ready tomorrow – sorta like Custer.

  569. Wait till they come to OUR house AGAIN August 8th, 2009 at 8:36 pm

At home the Red Sox are deadly.

So are we, of course. But let’s not forget that.

I’m happy to report I won’t have to change my blog name!

  570. BD 2.0 August 8th, 2009 at 8:37 pm

“Lester is a signficant advantage over Andy.”

    ——-

true, but Andy has pitched much better lately

plus, you cannot discount how tired the Sox offense has looked. can they get fired up for tomorrow?

    i dont know

Andy against what is now a mediocre offense or Lester against one of the best offenses in the game

  571. jennifer August 8th, 2009 at 8:37 pm

Again still watching pregame. No one hit a ball Alex’s way?! What! That is crazy!

  572. Betsy August 8th, 2009 at 8:37 pm

The Sox might get better – I’m sure they will – but what about the Yankees? If the Yankees continue to play good, solid ball (right now they are playing much better than that), they are going to be in great shape and it will be hard for the Sox to catch them.

  573. Tarheelyank August 8th, 2009 at 8:37 pm

A lot of pressure on young Mr. Lester. The Yankees should all be nice and loosey goosey tomorrow.

I will take my chances with the cagey veteran Andy.

  574. Wait till they come to OUR house AGAIN August 8th, 2009 at 8:37 pm

I have lost all respect for Ortiz (and I had a lot) after this garbage.

  575. jennifer August 8th, 2009 at 8:37 pm

Ha-Ha they ran out of redi whip! Too funny!

  576. DT - OPPC member (blood type - Positive) August 8th, 2009 at 8:37 pm

    I agree m.
I think a sweep is possible. Mainly because the Yankees and Red Sox historically play even. At 0-8, you figured the Yanks would come back and and at least win 6 or 7 out of ten.

The Sox are slumping and I hope it lasts another day. I don’t see them losing like 10 in a row – because they are tough at Fenway and they have solid hitters that should score 3-5 runs a game.

  577. Carl August 8th, 2009 at 8:37 pm

They need to get better on the road or they might not make the Playoffs. I been saying for a while now, of the Yanks and Sox, only 1 is getting in.

  578. PittsburghYankeeFan August 8th, 2009 at 8:38 pm

All I can say is, imagine if Wang had come back healthy? You’d be talking 105 wins. Cashmoney has it figured out.

Real issues for 2010 are figuring out how to replace Damon’s and Matsui’s production. I suspect Pettitte is having so much fun this year that he comes back for 2010 while Wang is given $2-3 million in arb and they see if he can still pitch. AJ, CC, Joba, Hughes, Pettitte. I can live with that…

Right now, major issues are keeping everyone healthy while not damaging Joba, and keeping the team loose. Two more West Coast trips aren’t fun, especially playing the Angels in the last two weeks of the season, but let us hope that those games aren’t needed too much.

Sox are hurting, big time. Beckett is giving them Cy Young this year, Lester looks like a good #3, but that is it. Who knows what Bucholtz is start to start, and by the way, the guy is 25 (no spring chicken), not 22 or 23. Bowden? Dice-K? Tazawa? Penny? Wakefield? Where is the vaunted farm depth? Free agent market for pitching is thin, and the Sox have little to offer up in trade in the 09 offseason. Who is the big left handed bat, now that Papi is PED-less? Jason Bay is going to ask for a fortune, and the Sox are not a fortune paying club, especially when their Randy Levine clone has too big a say in the FO.

It’s going to be an interesting last 7 weeks of the 09 season.

  581. m August 8th, 2009 at 8:38 pm

    CB,

I know the Sox are favored, but they look like “dead men walking” at this point. They have injuries, PED distractions, slumping sluggers, and they’ve been dominated the last 3 games. It’s going to take a phenominal performance by Lester or a poor outing by Andy for the Yankees to lose this one. The Sox have got to be in a state of shock right now.

  582. Wait till they come to OUR house AGAIN August 8th, 2009 at 8:38 pm

Trolls only get pleasure from attention. If they were just shunned, they would eventually leave. They get their kicks out of disturbing the flow of postings. It is hard to ignore, and highly doubtful that everyone would thus they feel empowered. It is a childish game, but then a lot of things are. Ultimately they are cowards. Of course if one wanted to they could track them down. LOL!

  588. randy l. August 8th, 2009 at 8:42 pm

“And rather than minimizing that risk they decided to increase their aggregate risk by signing Penny and Smoltz.”

    cb-

the red sox management really believe that players are expendable and interchangeable ,especially lucchino, and they may have pushed the envelope too far in not committing to long term contracts with star players.

teixeira would have made a dramatic difference to the red sox , but they still had that money to spend and didn’t spend it.

… and they could make a run at halladay if they choose to pay a lot and give up some serious prospects. but they seem to be trying to stay away from the mega contracts like cc signed.

the yankees may be forcing the red sox to reconsider their policy against high price long term contracts , or force them to lower their sights and make the playoffs most years , but not all.

they have a choice to make. it’s expensive to always make the playoffs.

  589. GreenBeret7 August 8th, 2009 at 8:42 pm

Pettitte at one time, about 4-5 years ago matched up well with Boston….not so much any more. If he stays hot and catches the Boston bats cold, he’ll be fine and has a chance. after that, it’s on the offense and defense. Lester has been tough to handle for a while.

  590. PittsburghYankeeFan August 8th, 2009 at 8:43 pm

Not so sure Lester is such an advantage tomorrow.. I’d call it even to slightly Sox favor. Beckett versus Andy would tip to Sox.

Bay isn’t playing. The Sox have not been hitting since playing the atrocious Orioles. Sure, Andy could blow tomorrow, but I wouldn’t count on it.

  591. Trevor August 8th, 2009 at 8:46 pm

“Boston will definitely get better as they get healthier”

It terms of their pitching yes. but their offense? Who’s really hurt outside of Bay? And when he was healthy he came back down to earth.

    SJJ,
You have some nerve to even suggest hitting Youk after your team drilled time after time the Red Sox hitters this season and throwing over Pedroia’s head and finally hitting him in the shoulder. You act like the bully who thinks that its okay to hurt people but when they stand up to you you dare question them about standing up to you.If your manager wants to play this game then he better be prepared to face the music.

    ******************************************************

I haven’t laughed so hard at rampant hypocrisy in a post on this blog in ages. Thanks for obliging, Christina25.

“while Wang is given $2-3 million in arb”

    ———

I dont think he can get less than a 20% discount from what he got this year.

So he’d get whatever he’s making minus 20%.

I think they’ll keep him around knowing that he probably wants to stay with the Yankees long-term.

If he comes back ok, they’ll have a bargain on their hands.

At least in theory (my theory :) )

  594. randy l. August 8th, 2009 at 8:50 pm

    patrick-

the urge to look is so strong the phenomenon needs a name.

  595. BD 2.0 August 8th, 2009 at 8:50 pm

the Red Sox really have their hands tied.

there are only a few free agent options.

They’ll probably keep Jason Bay, but how does that make their offense better than it is this season?

They can’t make any major moves without eating tons of salary until 2011.

They have Beckett for one more year and when he hits free agency, he could demand a monster contract from them.

The Sox simply cannot lose Josh Beckett no matter what the cost.

Aside from that, they need to find a place for Daisuke.

Wakefield will be an injury risk for the remainder of his career.

They’ll need at least 3 new starters for next season, in my estimation.

    Good luck with that.

  596. benfica356 August 8th, 2009 at 8:52 pm

Mark Feinsand of The NY Daily News tweets that the Yankees intend to designate righthander Josh Towers for assignment tomorrow to make room on the roster for recent pickup Chad Gaudin. Towers had been pitching with New York’s Triple-A affiliate, but the team called him up today as bullpen insurance following the 15-inning Yanks-Red Sox marathon last night.

“I think they’ll keep him around knowing that he probably wants to stay with the Yankees long-ter”

    bd 2.00-

i’ve heard it personally from two people who know him well that he was planning on leaving even before the problems this year.

that could always change, but with what’s happened this year. i think it’s likely wang and the yankees will have a difficult time coming to terms with wang no matter what he does next year.

i like wang. i’d like to see him move on for his own good.

nothing against the present yankee management . they just don’t get the kind of pitcher wang is.

Pete — Given what a HUGE hit Cano’s leadoff double in the 6th was, I think it’s a bit unfair to rag him just because he isn’t doing so well with men in scoring position. That double turned 1-0 into 2-0, giving CC a big lift for his last 2 innings.

With respect to the ejection, we should also note that Youkilis had made a hard slide into Jeter in the top of the same inning (Jeter’s amazing flip for the DP). I suspect that the umpire perceived that the Red Sox were growing increasingly edgy and frustrated. He decided to put a stop to things before they got out of hand, which is very commendable, and would have been if he had done the same thing to the Yanks. He then took the unusual and extraordinary step of talking to the pitchers, presumably telling them what they could and couldn’t do in the context of this situation. The bottom line is that the teams played baseball for the rest of the game and (let’s hope) for the rest of the series. A really great job by the ump.
