“Sweep, Sweep, Sweep”

400px-Broom_iconThe crowd said all there had to be said.

Meanwhile, the Yankees now lead the AL East by 6.5 games. In the long history of this franchise, they have never lost a lead of more than six games at any point of the season.

And before you break the internet asking, Phil Hughes was not available because had pitched in two consecutive games and four of the last five. Whether you agree with that or not — and I’m not sure I do given that he had thrown a grand total of eight pitches in the two previous days — you have to admire Joe Girardi’s willingness to stick by his standards.

People used to complain about Joe Torre abusing relievers. This is the price you pay, getting the Phil Cokes of the world in a big spot. Johnny Damon and Mark Teixeira bailed their manager out tonight. Imagine the howls of protest had the Yankees lost this game.

But they did not. That’s 18 of 23 and an amazing 31 of 41.

That’s 13 of 14 at home and 18 of the last 21.

That’s 27 games over .500 for the first time since the end of the 2006 season.

And that’s it for now. Back later with some audio.

Are people still counting comeback wins? What is that number up to now?

    Pete,
I think they’re unbroadcast Hughes Rules similar to Joba Rules that Girardi is operating under. Also, don’t forget the number of pitches Hughes threw prior to this weekend in those other two games plus the warmup pitches.

Its good to be King again

rotoworld.com (sort of) taking cheap shots at the Yanks as well:

“Damon’s homer, on a 98-mph fastball, was very legitimate, while Teixeira’s fly to right would have been an out in most parks.”

at least say Teixeira’s HR… not “fly to right”

  5. agPennyPacker August 10th, 2009 at 12:15 am

Why was Gaudin warming up?? Was he seriously going to bring him into the game at that point?

  6. Fran (the original) August 10th, 2009 at 12:15 am

Great all-around series by the Yanks. Now I think the Yanks are in the Red Sox heads.

  7. NYYfan22 August 10th, 2009 at 12:15 am

He pitched in 2 of the last 3 games? What does Girardi have against the kid? One batter in each game.

Pfft. What a waste to have a great pitcher in the bullpen that you can’t use because he threw 8 pitches in the last 48 hours.

  8. Cash is King August 10th, 2009 at 12:16 am

As the homers against Coke and Bard, you have to remember it’s not the velocity that counts, but the location of those fastballs.

  9. BD 2.0 August 10th, 2009 at 12:16 am

    “four of the last five.”

    ————

4 of the last 5, people!!

give the guy a night off…

we’ll need him for the playoffs, right???

  10. Midnight Rambler August 10th, 2009 at 12:16 am

Now the rest of the AL can use how the Yanks handled Boston this weekend as the blueprint on how to shut them down.

Great pitching like that does not happen without top-notch scouting.

  11. Erica - always OPPC August 10th, 2009 at 12:16 am

Coke is really taking responsibility for himself tonight. He said he was really angry with himself for that pitch to V-Mart. Glad to hear no delusions that he thought me made a good pitch

  12. Dustin August 10th, 2009 at 12:17 am

Haha, Pete, you must have done a Google Image search for “broom” because that’s the exact image I posted to Facebook after another Yankee sweep earlier in the season.

    Good night Yankee people!!!

This obsession with the “Bandbox” by ESPN is unreal.

    Two points

    1. The “jetstream” has basically disappeared so IMO all you really have to do is raise the fences a bit this off season b/c they really are ridiculously low.

    2. And more importantly, this Yankee team is absolutely built for this stadium. On most nights they have 7 freaking lefties in their lineup, all with power, AROD a righty has major power to right field, and Jeter’s only power is to right field. They have 9 guys who can hit it out to RF on any given pitch and that is certainly going to skew the stats.

  17. JRod August 10th, 2009 at 12:18 am

A bunch of other relievers were semi-unavailable too. That’s why Gaudin was warming up.

  18. Cash is King August 10th, 2009 at 12:19 am

“Coke is really taking responsibility for himself tonight. He said he was really angry with himself for that pitch to V-Mart. Glad to hear no delusions that he thought me made a good pitch”

    Location, location and location.

  19. m August 10th, 2009 at 12:19 am

I don’t mind that Hughes didn’t pitch today. Coke would’ve been fine, but he placed that pitch on a tee for Victor.

I wouldn’t have pitched Phil yesterday. No score? Go to mo for 4 outs.

    Score? Go to Robertson.

But that’s all under the rug now. Get out the broom and sweep it away.

  20. Brandon... I'M AWESOME ! Does this broom stick go w/ my outfit? August 10th, 2009 at 12:19 am

That ball Teix hit was a 2nd decker, and still hits the 2nd deck at the old stadium.

Tex’s shot landed in the 2nd tier. If it’s such a bandbox, how come the Sox only managed 1 HR in 4 games? Laughable. Can we say Pesky Pole anyone???

  23. Alex August 10th, 2009 at 12:20 am

In what park is Tex’s homer not out? It certainly would have been in Boston. It was crushed and even the Boston lovers on ESPN were saying it.

  26. Tank August 10th, 2009 at 12:23 am

Thankfully, Boston doesn’t get to face Washburn this week

  27. CaptainsCorner August 10th, 2009 at 12:23 am

Hey, John Henry do you still think Damon is washed up?

  28. Erik PDX August 10th, 2009 at 12:23 am

Looks like A-Rod is back to his useless stat-padding again. The Yankees still would have won without that meaningless home run. Talk about useless!

    I kid, I kid. ;)

    ————————————————————–

That is what I’m saying about the Yankees being absolutely stacked for this stadium. All these visiting players come in here talking smack about how they can’t wait to play in the “bandbox” yet at the end of the series the Yankees are the only ones blasting out HRs.

Now the Yanks have a little breathing room for the trip West later this week……Boston is now in for a dog fight for the wild card…..They should prevail, but how they regroup vs. Detroit will be a key….Their season could very well hinge on their next 10 games….

    “V-Mart is an elite hitter.

He’s literally been a unsong warrior for us this yr. he’s given us more big innings than we have given him credit for. He was the first to stabalize the bridge before Yuuuussse, the only thing he needs is for Marte to fix himself so that he can be 100 % effective.

  34. Abdababdaserser August 10th, 2009 at 12:25 am

I’m just ticked off that Pettitte didn’t get the win. After pitching like he did he deserved to get a win instead of a no decision.

Coke is OK, but he seems to give up the long ball more than I’d like to see.

Much appreciated. Thank you very much.

  37. Brian M August 10th, 2009 at 12:26 am

You can add 20 warm-up pitches to those pitch counts though. For a young pitcher who isn’t used to pitching out of the pen 3 days in a row would have been a bad idea.

The real question mark is why he was pitched so little in the games he was brought into. Tonight though I am glad he didn’t throw.

Still gutted Melancon was sent down though.

Coke is a solid reliever not a lock down reliever like Hughes or Mo. But for the most part he gets the job done as a lefty specialist.

People need to stop with the bandbox effect:

    http://www.newsday.com/columni.....-1.1359027

More relevant to the greater conversation here, check out these numbers, provided by Elias. The Yankees’ team ERA at home: 7.01 in April, 4.62 in May, 4.08 in June, 3.37 in July and – entering last night – 1.64 in August.

**The Yankees have adjusted to the park and overall, their pitching has beeen better. This article is a bit too obsessed with the HRs hit at YS, but I posted it here because of those stats. If you can make good pitches, generally speaking, you’ll be ok……Look how many zeros the Sox and Yanks put up this weekend. For pete’s sake, Alex and Tex are power hitters who hit HRs everywhere…..not just at YS

  43. raymagnetic August 10th, 2009 at 12:30 am

“4 of the last 5, people!!

give the guy a night off…

we’ll need him for the playoffs, right???”

Yeah. It’s crazy how many people want Hughes to pitch like he’s a machine or something.

Save him for now and have him throwing darts in the postseason.

  44. Betsy August 10th, 2009 at 12:30 am

Well Aba, AJ deserved a win too, but such is life. Forget the wins – people will remember what these guys did regardless of their no-decisions.

  45. Bo Knows August 10th, 2009 at 12:30 am

Jeter spoke the truth about the series. The Yankees didn’t swing the bats well. In the last three games it was all about pitching. The bats didn’t come alive till Boston’s tired BP showed up.

  46. agPennyPacker August 10th, 2009 at 12:31 am

What Girardi didn’t seem to understand is that when you have a chance to bury the Red Sox with a sweep you go for it and give Hughes the next 4 days off if needed.

Luckily the offense bailed him out tonight. The story of Girardi’s bullpen decisions (only willing to use Coke and Gaudin??) would have been front and back page of every newspaper tomorrow had we lost 2-1.

  47. vin August 10th, 2009 at 12:31 am

If NYY goes 30-21 over the remainder of the season, then they are at 99 wins – my prediction in Trisha’s opening day poll. I’m feeling pretty confident.

  48. Betsy August 10th, 2009 at 12:33 am

That’s the issue with Joe – if Phil wasn’t going to be available today anyway, why bring him in for only 1 batter yesterday? I’m not freaking about it and it’s not a big deal in the scheme of things, but still……it does make you wonder.

  49. CB August 10th, 2009 at 12:34 am

The yankees probability of winning the division after this 4 game sweep:

    90%.

The red sox probability of winning the division now:

    8%.

  50. raymagnetic August 10th, 2009 at 12:34 am

“What Girardi didn’t seem to understand is that when you have a chance to bury the Red Sox with a sweep you go for it and give Hughes the next 4 days off if needed.”

What you don’t understand is that Hughes can easily get injured from pitching too much.

Enjoy the win and stop worrying about all the would’ve, could’ve, shoulda nonsense.

  51. Phil August 10th, 2009 at 12:34 am

I still think we’re gonna win 100 or more. As the season goes on, we’re gonna start running into some teams that are just playing out the season…

Well it was a close game yesterday that was before Jeter hit the two run homerun and Sabathia was at 123 pitches. Also it was the game right after the 15 inning friday night game so a lot of the other relievers were not available.

I wasn’t even going to post the post-game today because I remembered hearing Michael Kay say during Friday’s game that there wasn’t going to be a post-game on Sunday. He said something like “Saturday- YES, Sunday- No”. But then Trisha posted “postgame on YES right now” right after the game and I got everything set up as fast as I could.

  67. CB August 10th, 2009 at 12:43 am

“Just keep winning and eliminating games of the schedule.”

Yes. When you win and eliminate games your probability of winning increases – by a lot if you beat the team that’s in second.

The probability is just another way of saying the same thing.

The big thing now is that the Red Sox and Rays are literally running out of games to catch the yankees.

It’s the games remaining that drive a lot of those probabilities.

  70. IrishCarBomb August 10th, 2009 at 12:43 am

He was only needed for 1 batter yesterday.

Some people were crying the other night how Girardi is abusing Hughes, now he isn’t being used enough.

Girardi took the gamble tonight with Coke and lost. Luckily Damon and Tex bailed him out.

Imagine what Torre would have done?

Hughes has many important spots coming. He could def use a breather.

  71. agPennyPacker August 10th, 2009 at 12:44 am

Throwing 9 pitches over 2 days and only facing one batter yesterday does not mean he will require Tommy John surgery if he gets 2 outs today and gets the next few games off.

Even if it wasn’t Hughes, Bruney and Robertson are better options to face Pedroia, Martinez, and Youkilis. We all know how Coke has been awful of late.

You want to ignore this because the Yankees miraculously won but had they lost you would be singing a very different tune.

  72. GreenBeret7 August 10th, 2009 at 12:45 am

Jason Hirsh pitched a fine game against Lehigh Valley. 6 innings, 6 hits, 1 run (earned), 1 walk, 2 strikeouts. ERA in 2 starts is 0.82

Jackson was 2-5 with a run scored and 2 RBI. Downside was 2 strikeouts against Chad Durbin and Gary Majewski, a couple of major league vets.

  73. Richie August 10th, 2009 at 12:45 am

Here is where Girardi messed up:

If you don’t trust Bruney in a big spot, then give Melancon a chance to be the RH reliever behind Hughes. He didn’t let up a run in his last 5 IP. Sending him down under these circumstances was dumb.

  74. DomincanYank August 10th, 2009 at 12:45 am

Wow, what a great series. I was hoping for a sweep but wasn’t expecting one. Don’t know about all the supposed question marks regarding Boston’s pitching rotation. The starters handled the Yankee lineup pretty well outside of Smoltz. The Yanks really grinded out the last 3 wins and our starting pitchers, outside of Joba, were amazing.

  76. YankeeRay August 10th, 2009 at 12:45 am

I’m watching the replay of the 8th inning and Morgan is an idiot. He keeps saying how Arod is hurt and not running well and that normally he would have scored on Posadas double. There is no way he scores on that play before his injury. He said the the same thing earlier in the game on his roller down 3rd.

  77. Bo Knows August 10th, 2009 at 12:45 am

But, but, but Martinez is a switch hitter. Do you want him batting lefty with the short RF porch. Coke for Martinez was the right call no matter how many people scream moron at Girardi. That old axiom – you can’t cure stupid, keyboard warriors.

“If you don’t trust Bruney in a big spot, then give Melancon a chance to be the RH reliever behind Hughes. He didn’t let up a run in his last 5 IP. Sending him down under these circumstances was dumb.”

Melancon was sent down b/c Yuussse and Ace couldn’t pitch today, I’m not sure but D-Rob was also unavailable. Melancon was sent down for Gaudin to give them innings, plus Mitre is pitching vs Toronto, Gaudin can LR there. Melancon can be brought back up in 10 or 15 days, relax. Bruney is still not there, not for these type of innings, 1 run game in the 8th, who you joking w/ that.

  83. Bo Knows August 10th, 2009 at 12:49 am

Cashman is stockpiling arms for the fifth spot. Gaudin, Mitre, Ortiz, Hirsh. Love it. All reclamation projects. And Theo brings up Tazawa. Irony, irony.

  84. CB August 10th, 2009 at 12:50 am

    Lester pitched great tonight.

But he can’t start every game for them. Neither can Beckett.

Tomorrow they play detroit. The pitching matchup:

    Edwin Jackson vs. Brad Penny.

As yankee fans we actually are underestimating what has happenned with the Sox.

It’s not just that they got swept – they also got swept 2 games to the Rays.

They have lost 6 games in a row to their biggest rivals.

And the consolation – facing Edwin Jackson tomorrow.

    Brutal.

“Yes. When you win and eliminate games your probability of winning increases – by a lot if you beat the team that’s in second.

The probability is just another way of saying the same thing.

The big thing now is that the Red Sox and Rays are literally running out of games to catch the yankees.

It’s the games remaining that drive a lot of those probabilities.”

CB – I understand what you are saying. My point is to not even think about big picture. A 6 1/2 game lead can turn into a 2 1/2 if the Yankees have a bad 10 game stretch and Boston rebounds. One game, one win at a time … we are only in the 2nd week of August … now that we are 6 1/2 games in front keep pushing forward and lets get the lead up to 10 and go from there. Kill those SOB’s in back of us.

No reason to blow out hughes. Even if he only threw 9 pitches over his last 2 appearances, he still had to get warm and get into the game.

it was a HUGE gamble and the outcome was a loss. I was annoyed, but knew why Hughes wasn’t being used.

Yankees were on pace to win 100 games yesterday, I think.

So now they’re on pace to win over 100 games.

It’s really been something to see this team come together like this. Remember back in early May how the Yanks would always get close but couldn’t seem to get over the hump?

    Well, that’s changed.

About Hughes: it’s not just throwing pitches, it’s the entire act of getting up and getting loose and getting ready to come into the game.

The other part of Girardi’s explanation as to why he used Coke and not anyone else, was that if the game went into extras, he needed relievers that could give them length.

And Coke inducing that double play to get out of the 8th inning will probably go under the radar.

  96. JWagg August 10th, 2009 at 12:54 am

    :-) I’m a big fan.
I’m with “you gotta have faith” though. I don’t want Hughes pitching 5 of 6 days

  97. Frank August 10th, 2009 at 12:54 am

    Exactly Stu

We go 4-6 in our next 10 and Boston goes 8-2, that lead is basically nullified.

We still have a very tough schedule… we play 7 games on the West, then Boston on the road and the White Sox/Tigers at home.

And we have a brutal September. All we’ve done is given ourselves some breathing room but we still have a lot of work to do.

    CB,

I was listening to Jason Smith on espn radio (in and out a lot, driving kids around), and he had Rob Neyer come on and he asked what sounded like a really stupid question, but brought out some great insight.

Smith: Who did this series affect more? The Yankees positively? Or the Yankees negatively?

Neyer: The Red Sox. Oh wait..the Yankees positively? Then it definitely is the Yankees. All of a sudden they’re up 6.5 and they’re most likely a shoe-in for the playoffs.

(banter about the mets blowing leads)

Neyer: But everytime the mets blow late season leads we bring up the list and are surprised how seldom it happens. This is huge for the Yankees because they can, not cruise, but they’re pretty much in. The Red Sox are going to be in a cage match with Tampa and Texas for the Wild Card.

    ———————————————

It was good, good stuff. Worth noting though, that Seattle has also sneaked up. They may not be in the hunt, but they, along with the Jays and Orioles will gladly play the role of spoiler.

  109. raymagnetic August 10th, 2009 at 1:01 am

It’s amazing how people are worried about the best team in the league having a ‘brutal’ upcoming schedule.

If I’m the other teams in the division I’m worrying about playing the Yankees.

  110. lil' m August 10th, 2009 at 1:02 am

What an awesome series!! The Yankees’ pitchers showed they can match zeros with anybody other teams can put out there from start to finish. Beckett and Lester were lights out, and AJ, CC and Andy were every bit as good. And the Yankees’ bullpen? Rock steady, other than the HR given up by Phil Coke (who is a hysterically funny interview), and Johnny D, Tex and Swish picked him up the very next inning.

This is a very special team, and they absolutely mean business. There’s plenty of baseball left in the season, but Yankee fans have got to love what they’ve been seeing for this team for quite a while now. Every team has hiccups, rough patches, and stumbles. The good ones get back on track sooner rather than later, and the great ones go for the kill whenever the opportunity presents itself. THANK YOU Brian Cashman for signing CC AND AJ and going for the trifecta by snapping up Tex right from under the nose of the Sox. The fruits of those acquisitions are beginning to be seen in the most pressure-packed situations this side of the postseason. And thanks again C-Money for holding on to Joba, Hughes, and even the Melkman when push came to shove – look how well that’s paying off now. Here’s hoping folks can fully appreciate our 2009 Yanks even when they occasionally lose. This is the best team they’ve had in some time, and IMO the fun has only begun. Big ups to our blogmaster Pete, for whose wall-to-wall coverage and blogging there are not enough superlatives. Nighty-night to all and GO YANKS!!!

    A few tidbits:

    1) In just one measly 7 day stretch, the Yankees have won games where the opposing starters were: Mark Buerhle, Roy Halladay, Josh Beckett and Jon Lester.

    2) If the Yankees play one game worse than .500 ball the rest of the season (25-26), they finish 94-68. For Boston to catch the Yanks, they would have to go 32-20 in that scenario.

    3) My prediction of a 19-9 August is looking better each day :)

Enjoy the win and stop worrying about all the would’ve, could’ve, shoulda nonsense.”

I am enjoying the win as much as anybody but you can’t ignore the fact that if Damon doesn’t hit that home run we lose. Mariano then does not pitch the top of the 9th (it would most likely be Gaudin, who is likely to give up a run or two) and chances are that Papelbon locks it down (140 of 158 in his career).

Browse Articles Videos By CategoryFood DrinkHobbies, Games ToysThe next brand we are going to talk about for you ladies is a very well known fashion designer that I’m sure you have heard of, Christian Dior. Christian Dior loves to advertise their name on their frames, kind of very in your face type of approach to designing the frame styles. A little bit of a larger frame but very contemporary so let’s take a look at what they have to offer. I’m going to focus on this one over here, you can kind of get an idea of how they are advertising their frame with the big Dior on the side over here. But check it out, you’ve got some brushed metal on the side here, with the bone finish in the back, brushed finish on the front, very fashion forward, you’re not going to see a whole lot of stuff like this, very, very nice design on that particular model. Next thing, this black one, may just look like a basic black with the shadow metal front that I have been talking about but you’ve got a little accent with a little jewel pieces on the side here, just to kind of give it a little flair without going too over the top. This one is also a very well designed frame in my opinion, it’s got a lot of different color, kind of adds to me a little class to the frame, a little accent rather than making it very boring. Dark tortoise on the front which is kind of a fairly standard industry color, you know this dark tortoise but again I like how they have done the design of the temple, a little bit of ivory, gold and even a little bit of copper on there. This brand is for somebody who is probably going to be a little bit on the cutting edge of the frame, frame line, wanting to try something that is going to be name brand but a little bit more bold, a little bit fashion forward, so if that’s you and you want to kind of push the limit with a name brand frame Christian Dior is probably a good place to start.?Christian fiction for tweens and teens obsessed with New York Fashion Week
