Seems like people like baseball

This from ESPN:

ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball telecast featuring the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees delivered an average of 4,698,000 viewers and 3,427,000 households to become the most-viewed MLB game on the network since June 3, 2007.

The corresponding 3.5 rating was the highest since the Yankees and Red Sox equaled the number September 16, 2007. ESPN’s telecast was the most viewed of the four-game series, outperforming the closest telecast by 19 percent among viewers, and the most-viewed MLB regular season game to date in 2009 (cable or broadcast).

The Yankees defeated the Red Sox 5-2 to complete a four-game sweep at Yankee Stadium. The telecast generated a 12.3 metered market rating in Boston and a 10.3 in New York.

So glad we won that game then! It’s a Yankee Universe, the Red Sox just live in it.

It’s time for another thrilling round of “Guess the Line Up”!!!

Please post your line-ups to me here (or on any new threads that pop up). Do NOT post on any old threads once Pete posts a new one (I will miss it). Also, you must post line ups with 9 players and positions. Anything else will be disregarded. Always check to make sure you are on the list of line ups submitted that I post on new threads.

TRY TO BEAT JOE GIRARDI TODAY!

The Friday night game on the YES Network was also the second highest rated telecast in the history of the network.

what was the event on June 3rd 2007 that garnered higher ratings?

  11. Y26 August 11th, 2009 at 2:05 pm

June 3rd, 2007 was the game where A-Rod hit that HR off Papelbon in Fenway.

  12. m August 11th, 2009 at 2:06 pm

Even Neyer said after that game, “People complain we cover the Yankees and Red Sox too much, but the fact is that’s what people watch.”

And it’s always a good game, rarely a blowout. Could be a slugfest or a pitcher’s duel, but they usually match blow for blow.

Win tonight and maybe tomorrow afternoon let the guy rest?

  43. Eric August 11th, 2009 at 2:22 pm

Cowherd only talks baseball because he has to now that he was re-assigned to 1050 New York when Kellerman left. He feels he needs to do something to get listeners from NY so he pretends to like baseball even though he hates it.

  44. Jude August 11th, 2009 at 2:22 pm

Great Game on ESPN, but horrible horrible commentating. There is a Red Sox vs Yankees game going on and the Morgan, Miller & Philips are ignoring the game for 3 innings talking to Luis Tiant. They were completing ignoring the game. I know they wanted to plug “Lost Son of Havana” but seriously so annoying. Anyway…

I think all National radio shows are brutal

So are 1st and 10, PTI, ATH etc.

Not only are all their analysts uninformed, everything they say will turn off part of the country. Baseball will turn off the South. College football will turn off the East, etc.

  55. Wait till we visit the Sardine Can August 11th, 2009 at 2:29 pm

Skip Bayless is now officially unistenable. I used to watch him, but I’ve finally stopped (I’m sure eventually I’ll get curious and watch again though).

Before the series started vs. Boston, Boston was the better team and they were going to win 3 of 4.

Then they lost game 1. But no matter. Boston was the better team and they’d still split.

Fast forward to Monday after the sweep.

Boston was swept, 6.5 games out…and he STILL picked the Sox to win the division. More than that, he picked the Yankees OUT of the playoffs!

Not to mention despite him just absolutely worshipping Boston and Tampa Bay anybody who thijnks the Yankees are better is clearly a closet Yankee fan and doesn’t look at things objectively.

    He’s worse than Francessa.

As hard as it is to believe, not everyone who has ESPN is a baseball fan. Even worse, many of those who do get ESPN hate BOS-NYY games so they weren’t going to watch to begin with. I guarantee you that none of my Cubs or WS friends watched Sunday’s game.

I know football’s a big deal, but I don’t think about it until the season begins. And even then I only think about it on game day. It’s 16 games. The rest of the days are filler, and it’s boring.

Even in the off season they fill hours and hours of talk radio interviewing people from training camp. Even more hours are spent talking about who’s holding out. Hey, Crabtree! No play, no pay! Just give me a well played football game with a dubya for my team, and I’m perfectly happy.

Laura, when a preseason football game between the Titans and Bills (not exactly national powers in terms of popularity) crushes the best rivalry in baseball, there is a major problem.

Not to mention we’re talking about a Sunday night during the summer, when there’s no original programming on regular television.

I love baseball, obviously. But the ratings decline is very troubling.

I actually hate football season. I love football. But I only get to watch the games on Sunday. The rest of the week I just try not to go totally crazy.

The only way I could stop myself from losing it was to watch hockey, which took the place of baseball. The only problem was that I was a Devils’ fan and I only got Flyers and Rangers games most of the time. I thought aboutswitchng teams but I couldn’t do it. To me it’s sort of like swbetrayng my country and fighting with another nation. The idea is repellant.

Finally near the end of the season I found a website that streamed in Devils’ games for free, so for the final bit of the season I got to watch the Devils. Now I’ll be able to watch them all year. Between the Devils nd Giants I should survive during the offseason.

“Question for you guys: Do you think Tex will be a HOF’er by the end of his career barring injuries?”

Baseballreference.com shows his that his closest comp thru the age 29 is Carlos Delgado. The numbers are very similar, though Teixeira’s not done yet. After age 29, Delgado went on to post 7 seasons (2002 – ’08) of a .920 OPS, in which he averaged 34 homers and 112 rbi.

Delgado has a small, yet impressive, postseason resume that he will not likely be building on. He also wasn’t near the glove man Teixeira is. I don’t think he’s an HOF’er. I think Teixeira could be, but it’ll require him posting something close to monster years thru the end of his contract and perhaps beyond…which is certainly possible.

For the sake of arguement, I’ve always considred a sport different from a game because I always thought that for a sport you needed some physical skill. You can be fat and old and out of shape and be a competitive golfer; the same, except in the case of certain pitchers, isn’t true for baseball.

The Devils played in the greatest NHL postseason series of all time vs. the Canes’, but nobody noticed because NJ and Carolina are small markets.

I find it troubling also, I’m not a football hater like some that post, I love Football(College and NFL) and I love baseball…..but baseball’s popularity is really dropping like a rock outside of the North East…I think most of the blame has to go the way the league is structured and the pace of the game is too slow for many casual fans….most people can sit down and watch over 8 football games between Saturday or Sunday in the Fall but in baseball a fan will usually just follow their own team or rival in the division(talking about the casual baseball fan, not fanatic)
7.9mil for a meaningless Pre season game vs 4.7mil for the biggest rivalry in baseball is something that needs to be looked into to improve nationwide interest..

What’s amazing about this is that we put up with the worst game commentators in history to watch it: I am referring, of course, to Jon Miller and Joe Morgan, who spend the game talking about themselves and/or arcane history and generally ignore the game. Sometimes the camera stays on them and ignores the game too. I’ve written to ESPN twice so far about it, but obviously nobody but me cares. Anybody who does, let me know via my blog or email.
