The Yankees ended their homestand by beating Toronto but took a beating doing so. Josh Thomson has the story.

There’s a new set of Joba Rules and they are being put into action. This notebook also has updates on Chad Gaudin’s Yankee debut and A.J. Burnett.

Thanks again to Josh for picking up the beat the last two days and doing a great job with the stories for the newspaper and the blog.

    Pete-

I hope you are sleeping, It’s 6am in Seattle!!!

  2. 86w183 August 13th, 2009 at 8:55 am

It’s amazing how a few bumps and bruises can be categorized as “taking a beating”. If three middle aged men need a night off after across country flight so their boo-boos heal that’s not quite the same as multiple players going on the DL is it?

Is it time to see if Hinske can play some 3B?

I think this weekend will determine if the Yanks try to do something to get a starter on the waiver wire. If Mitre and Gaudin each go five decent innings they’ll almost certainly stand pat. But if one/both gets shelled it may be time for plan-B.

Wow – what a day. I miss one game and AROD, Jorge, Jeter and Mo get hurt. That’s pretty much the whole board of directors right there. sounds like we dodged a bullet, but it shows how fragile a baseball season is and how much luck you need to get through a year in good health.

I wouldn’t be surprised if we see a slump out of these guys in the next few weeks as I am sure they’re going to play very banged up.

Hopefully the rest of the bats can pick them up.

  4. SJ44 August 13th, 2009 at 8:57 am

Hinske can’t play third base. He’s not an option there.

You may see Hairston at third and Pena at short tonight.

The big reason why they have both Hairston and Pena here is because Hinske can’t play third.

He’s better suited for RF or 1B.

  5. Rex August 13th, 2009 at 9:00 am

“Is it time to see if Hinske can play some 3B?”

Long ago established that he can’t. Might be able to hide him there for one game though. Hinske/Pena left side of the infield tonite?

  6. jennifer August 13th, 2009 at 9:05 am

I think Pete has it set to automatically post at a certain time. It is still only 9am here. So he is probably still sleeping.

  7. Andrew August 13th, 2009 at 9:11 am

Hairston and Pena is such a huge improvement over early in the season when it would have been Ransom and Berroa subbing for a banged-up A-Rod and Jeter.

That’s what I thought. Btw- still kicking myself for not making that bet with you

  9. bru August 13th, 2009 at 9:20 am

i think jeter fights his way into the lineup.

    hairston or pena at 3rd

with arod off it might be wise to play damon & jeter unless jeter cant go.

    rest one at a time.

tex off last night, arod off tonight, posada also.

the problem i have is no cc or joba in the rs series

    burnett
    pettitte
    mitre/gaudin

between the bumpy/bruisy game yesterday and the Hokies losing their starting RB to an ACL tear on Tuesday I’m starting to get very injury conscious! I hope I don’t hurt myself walking to the bathroom or opening the fridge today! I thought I felt a little tweak in my gas pettle ankle today on the way to work…

Kidding aside, it sounds like Girardi was planning his rest days at about the right time. Hopefully we can make it through the next few weeks without anything more serious than a few bumps and bruises. Shout out to Cano for the uber-clutch hit w/ RISP last night to win the game!

  11. Hokiehill August 13th, 2009 at 9:22 am

I knew it, I must have injured my brain! make that gas PEDAL

  12. Erica - always OPPC August 13th, 2009 at 9:25 am

bru- “Guess the Line Up” is 4:45 this afternoon. Glad you are getting prepped

I also think its way too soon to start thinking pitching matchups for Boston, There are 6 games between now and then. And Girardi is moving the rotation around for Joba and Gaudin so nothing is set in stone

MG, not every comment that isn’t overwhelmingly positive needs to be treated like it’s a whiny complaint.

We were talking about AJ last night and how some thought he threw Jorge under the bus – which I don’t believe he did, at all. The quotes I posted from Jorge, IMO, are worthy of discussion because those indicate to me that he and AJ may be off-kilter again. Was it really necessary for Jorge to say that AJ crossed him up (if that’s even the case)? I say this and I am a proponent of AJ and Jorge working together ……I’m a proponent of Jorge working with all the pitchers – I love the guy. It’s really ok to discuss things that aren’t so hunky dory.

  14. Erica - always OPPC August 13th, 2009 at 9:27 am

Note about today’s “Guess the Line Up”

Guess the Line Up will run today from 4:45 until 6:15. Line up submissions will promptly end at 6:15 due to my selfishly making dinner plans (I will ignore all submissions after 6:15). I will formally annouce the winner when I get home around game time.

  15. betsy August 13th, 2009 at 9:28 am

I really hope Jeter isn’t in the lineup……I don’t need to see him aggravating an already painful bruise and limping around there. That doesn’t do him any good and it doesn’t do the Yankees any good.

  16. theyankeewarrior August 13th, 2009 at 9:31 am

    Pete,

Remember how many emails I sent you about the Red Sox skipping aces? Looks like we finally got some luck. No Halladay, no King Felix and hopefully no Lester in Boston.

The “just circumstance” conspiracy is on our side now!

  17. Hokiehill August 13th, 2009 at 9:33 am

” Was it really necessary for Jorge to say that AJ crossed him up (if that’s even the case)?”

From my distant POV that was simply Jorge explaining what happened in the situation…I only have limited quotes to go by (didn’t see post game interviews) so maybe I’m off, but I could see someone saying “what happened with the wild pitches?” and Jorge explaining what happened. It could be as simple as that, or maybe there’s something more behind it.

I agree on your point about “negative” topics being allowed. If someone thinks a topic is worth discussion then that’s enough for me. If you don’t think something is worth talking about, don’t talk about it/don’t respond…it’s really that simple.

  18. Patrick August 13th, 2009 at 9:35 am

Sounds like A-rod, Jeter and Posada will all be on the bench tonight. We are looking at a lineup of…

    Damon LF
    Swisher RF
    Teixeira 1B
    Matsui DH
    Cano 2B
    Cabrera CF
    Hairson 3B
    Pena SS
    Molina C

I’ve seen better but it’s nice to have a solid bench and two athletic guys like Pena/Hairston.

  19. Fran (the original) August 13th, 2009 at 9:36 am

    Erica,

Winning Guess the Lineup could be difficult tonight with some of the players being banged up.That’s my excuse if I don’t win;)

  20. Cash is King August 13th, 2009 at 9:37 am

” Was it really necessary for Jorge to say that AJ crossed him up (if that’s even the case)?”

Anybody that saw the pitch and knows baseball could see that Posada was crossed up.

  21. posada August 13th, 2009 at 9:39 am

Bottom line is this Posada has to catch the ball. He has to block everything that bounces in front of him.

  22. posada August 13th, 2009 at 9:39 am

He also drops a lot of foul third strikes that give the batter another shot

  23. Hokiehill August 13th, 2009 at 9:40 am

“Bottom line is this Posada has to catch the ball. He has to block everything that bounces in front of him.”

maybe he could feel Angel Eyes lurking over his shoulder…we all know Cervelli would have caught every one of those “wild pitches”

Don’t kill me, I’m just kidding!!

  24. Patrick August 13th, 2009 at 9:41 am

A.J. and Jorge had a tough day. I don’t see the point in talking about who threw who under the bus or who’s fault it was, etc. It was a bad day for both guys but the Yanks won. End of story.

    burnett
    pettitte
    gaudin/mitre for the rs series.

wfan said it not me so it is no big deal.

i also threw a lineup in now because i have to work & a lot of times i cant play so at least i have a lineup out so i can check if i was right.

  26. Erica - always OPPC August 13th, 2009 at 9:43 am

    Fran-

Tonight’s GTLU could be interesting. I have a feeling Joe Girardi might win again like he did yesterday, but I think he has given us enough hints about his intentions so that we can get some logical guesses

However, GTLU will get really hard after September call ups

  27. Erica - always OPPC August 13th, 2009 at 9:44 am

    bru-

Sounds good. I just don’t put people in the official game unless they submit during the actual GTLU window. I know people (like myself) have real paying jobs, so I try to leave at least a 90 minute window

  28. Rex August 13th, 2009 at 9:45 am

” Was it really necessary for Jorge to say that AJ crossed him up (if that’s even the case)?”

If nothing else, Posada has always been refeshingly honest in his assessment of things. From saying “we need an ace” during the Santana trade talks, to saying “he crossed me up” yesterday. Also worth noting he has no problem assessing blame to himself when he’s part of what wnet awry. I never have a problem with what he says.

  29. charlestonchew August 13th, 2009 at 9:48 am

I think the lineup will be this: (and no im not “submitting” it. i’m just giving my guess/preference).

    Damon LF
    Melky CF
    Matsui DH
    Teixeira 1B
    Cano 2B
    Swisher RF
    Hairston 3B
    Molina C
    Pena SS

And I still think that’s a really good lineup. Arod is missing, Jeter missing, Posada missing, but there’s still potential to score 5+ runs.

believe it or not i have a real paying job also.

i am ok with not being allowed in to early but why not get as many people involved as possible?

  32. bru August 13th, 2009 at 9:59 am

why is everybody counting jeter out tonight?

    i think he plays

i dont see girardi resting arod, posada & jeter

    wfan now saying
    pettitte
    sabathia
    burnett

    maybe for the rs series.

    not as bad

bru- I responded to you on the new thread

  34. Patrick August 13th, 2009 at 10:08 am

“why is everybody counting jeter out tonight?”

Because he got hit in the foot, was limping around for a few innings and then taken out of the game yesterday. It was bad enough that they thought he might have broken it.

I’d say almost a 0% chance Jetes plays today.
