I thought you'd forgotten about Andy Cannizaro, but after looking it up, he never started a game for them at SS. He did play 11 games there, however.

I fully expect the Yankees to spend some years in the short stop desert after Jeter moves or retires. It just isn't easy to replace that kind of talent. As for the Red Sox, they have had to go through the same thing with replacing Nomar. Pharmaceutical help aside, he was an ELITE shortstop. That said they couldn't make it work with Orlando Cabrera or Renteria.

Watching the next closer is going to be brutal as well. There have been other closers in the league during Mo's tenure who have shown flashes of his kind of dominance, but he just keeps doing it, while they fall away. We have been truly blessed as Yankees fans and fans of the game generally to see Jeter, Mo and Posada play. They will not be easy to replace.

I’m glad that the Yankees didn’t get Ian Snell before the trade deadline. There were a lot of folks who wanted to see him in Pinstripes based on his recent minor league pitching stint, but after wathcing him last night I think Cashman and the Yankee organization did better for us by getting Chad Gauguin.

and, based on the spelling of Chad's name, he paints pretty well also :)

i have a question. if alex gets another off season hip surgery, will he be back in time for camp? will he be better than he is this year? can he play gold glove caliber defense again?

should cash bring back jerry hairston next year?

---------------------------------------------

I don't know the answer to any of the questions in your first paragraph, but I think the Yankees would be wise to bring back Jerry Hairston Jr. He seems to be more than adequate at all of the positions that I've seen him play and he's no slouch at the plate. Plus...he's a huge upgrade over Cody Ransom. I wouldn't mind us having both Ramiro Pena and Jerry Haiston Jr on the team next year.

I agree w/Erica, Alex doesn't get enough credit for moving off the position in which he was virtually assured of going down as the greatest in the history of the sport.

I also think he deserves immense credit for opting to have the two surgeries in order to help the team this year. Think about it, he's likely playing in pain this season knowing all along an even more invasive surgery awaits in the off-season.

Doesn't Alex's next hip surgery involve shaving the hip bone? No es bueno!
