It’s August and for CC Sabathia, it’s winning time. He and the Yankees dominated the Mariners last night.

The Yankees retooled their bullpen early in the season and it has paid off.

Alex Rodriguez missed the game with a sore elbow. This notebook also has updates on Mariano Rivera, Jose Posada and a coming deadline for draft picks.

My good buddy Mark Feinsand wrote a nice piece about attending an Islanders game with his son. Check it out.

It really is impressive that a bullpen considering horrible in the first month of this season became a major strength of the team

  2. Betsy August 14th, 2009 at 8:41 am

Erica, it’s hard to believe, isn’t it? That’s the beauty of the long season……….teams have a chance to right their ships and the best teams at the beginning of the season are not necessarily the best at the end of the season. The Yankees will have to rework their pen next year, too, as Phil will not be their to save their buns in the 8th inning.

I went to sleep last night around the 6th inning. Was there a reason Damon came out of the game for Hinske other than the Yanks had a lead and it was an opportunity for extra rest???”

Well I’m not a lip reader but I believe Damon said :
“If I have lost my biggest fan Erica to the sleep fairy, I might as well take off the ice skates and call it a day”

    ***

    That, I entirely believe.

    Betsy-

That is exactly it. Thats why its so hilarious to me when fans panic the first week of April. There is so much more baseball to be played out and adjustments to be made.

NYY still the only teams with 70 wins or more (72)

  5. Tom from Worcester (MA) August 14th, 2009 at 8:45 am

Pete thanks for all the hard work now get some sleep brother! it’s only 5:45 am out there!

I think the Yankees can release Albaladejo & Ramirez at this point. I don’t see Bruney having a long term future with the team either.

  9. Papelboner August 14th, 2009 at 8:56 am

I think that benching last year for not hustling has turned Cano around.

He is playing like a superstar. Defense has been stellar and offensively he is becoming a monster.

He stays under the radar because of all the other names, which is maybe good for him, but lets not forget the season he is having.

  10. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Montero Fanaticus Primus August 14th, 2009 at 8:57 am

You keep Albaladejo and Ramirez in case someone gets hurt.

  11. Sony August 14th, 2009 at 9:01 am

Last night was the perfect West Coast game: I could turn it off at midnight knowing the Yankees would almost certainly win – and if not, I didn’t want to see that anyway.

“That lineup is just stupid. They shouldn’t be allowed to have a lineup like that, but that is why their payroll is what it is.” Ian Snell

And that’s without Posada or Arod.

Funny quote by Ian Snell. Prior to last night the Angels had scored the most runs in MLB. I don’t hear any complaints about their payroll \:)/

“That lineup is just stupid. They shouldn’t be allowed to have a lineup like that, but that is why their payroll is what it is.” Ian Snell
    ***

Snell is an idiot. If you aren’t good enough to face the Yankees (with A-Rod and Posada resting), you shouldn’t be in the major leagues. Then again, Snell felt so inadequate in PITTSBURGH that he requested to go down to Triple A.

And people think he could have actually made it as a Yankee.

Also, its one thing to tip your hat and just admit the line up defeated you, but don’t go bringing the payroll into this.

  17. ANSKY August 14th, 2009 at 9:24 am

If the rotation next year has CC, AJ, the Jobber and Hyoooooooozzze, that’s four guys whose ERA’s are currently in the 3.5 to 3.8 range. And the youngsters should improve next year, even if just by becoming more experienced.

Currently there are three of those starters in the rotation plus Pettitte (4.1+) and a 5th starter of the du jour, and this team’s still on pace for 100+ wins. Not bad. It’s good to be a Yanks fan right now.

It’s too bad Wang’s not going to have much of a presence next year, even if he were able to make some kind of comeback later on. If we could only add the pre-injury Wang to that probable ’10 rotation, we have “we play today, we win today … das it!” all over again.

Ahhh … it’s still going to be good to be a Yanks fan.

  20. Jerkface August 14th, 2009 at 9:30 am

The rest of the quote said , “No team in the national league has a lineup like that.”

And in the ESPN wrap up it said “Ian Snell was more impressed by the yankee lineup” or something. I doubt he was railing against yankee payroll

Not an overreaction. It won’t ruin my day or anything. But I genuinely think he is an idiot.

  22. David August 14th, 2009 at 9:34 am

Rebecca, agreed. I find it hilarious that he finds our lineup stupid. As long as there’s no salary cap, there’s no justification to say anything about how fair a team is. Snell is also a headcase who has battled with depression, so these comments are coming from quite a mentally unstable person.

  23. Raymagnetic August 14th, 2009 at 9:35 am

Know why the bullpen is better? Because the starting rotation has been phenomenal since A-Rod returned to the lineup.

If your starters are pitching deep into games your bullpen has less of an opportunity to be exposed.

Have you ever wondered (not that I’m suggesting this happen,at all)Why Matsui and Damon are never drilled by any of the pitcher’s? Matsui and Damon are lethal weapons, that fly under the radar!

    Erica,

I didn’t say A-Rod boosted the rotation. I’m just saying that the point when the whole team turned it around.

The starters ERA has been great from that point on.

  30. SJ44 August 14th, 2009 at 9:42 am

He’s using the term “stupid” as a compliment. That’s the way he talks.

As in, “their lineup is “stupid”, with “stupid” meaning good.

He wasn’t ripping the Yankees, he was praising them.

  31. betsy August 14th, 2009 at 9:42 am

Rebecca, I don’t find payroll comments funny. The part about the lineup being stupid is funny, but I’m sick of people killing the Yankees for spending $$. At least they put their $$$ back into the team, unlike other fat cat owners who sit on their wallets. I’ll forget all about Ian Snell soon enough because he’s a forgettable pitcher………

SJ, if he’s praising us, I don’t think he would say, ‘they shouldn’t be allowed to have a team like that, but that is why their payroll is what it is’, he’s more jealous that he’s not a part of this team than anything else if you ask me.

  34. betsy August 14th, 2009 at 9:44 am

I got what he meant by “stupid”, but the payroll thing turned me off…my guess is he would feel differently had he been traded to the Yankees.

  35. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Montero Fanaticus Primus August 14th, 2009 at 9:44 am

Stupid: Stoo-pid. Adj. 1) When used as slang, means “beyond belief”, awesome, so good as to render the viewer momentarily stupid with awe.

  36. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Montero Fanaticus Primus August 14th, 2009 at 9:45 am

I find the payroll comments hilarious.

Seattle isn’t exactly a poor team.

  37. Raymagnetic August 14th, 2009 at 9:46 am

Snell never railed against the Yankees payroll. I don’t know where some of you are getting that from.

And Betsy you may forget about Ian Snell, but he’s never even heard of you.

  38. betsy August 14th, 2009 at 9:47 am

The rotation doing better has helped, but also we have different pieces in the pen now……..no more Ramirez or Albaladejo, for one. Phil has locked the 8th down for this year, Robertson has stepped up and Bruney’s pitching better. I’m really not thrilled with Coke – IMO, he’s unreliable. He does a good job at times ,but he gives up way too many HRs. His ERA at this point is about 5 – that’s terrible.

I have a wonderful sense of humor. I don’t think he is funny. And I don’t think he was trying to be funny.

If Joba went out and made a post game comment like that I seriously doubt you would all be laughing at it. There would be 3,000 comments about how immature he is and how he is making excuses for lousy pitching, and what a terrible pitcher he is because he can’t face a line up with two of its biggest starts missing

Yankees rout SEA with no Arod,or Pasda.

CC in first inning pitches 11,in 2nd pitches 29.Looks like he’s going to throw a lot of pitches early.then goes 8 innings 105 pitches, great.

Yankees working as a fine tuned machine.

    Fan base euphoric!
