Matsui needs to think about retirement after the season because he has two bad wheels and it’s not going to get any better for him.

  2. Cash is King August 16th, 2009 at 7:32 pm

At least not trying to play a 162 game season.

  3. BBFan August 16th, 2009 at 7:33 pm

    Posted on the last thread:

Every one including SJ think Joba is nibbling.
    I am not so sure.
Why would he do that intentionally in so many starts.
My gut feeling is that he does not have conrol of his pitches and he does not know where they are going. It is the same reason why he leaves pitches in the middle of the plate with 0-2 count.

The good thing is he proved that he can overcome it with his three starts after the ASB. Hopefully, he will regain that control.

  4. EricNS August 16th, 2009 at 7:33 pm

ESPN said out indefinitely – so much for their headlines

  5. eric August 16th, 2009 at 7:35 pm

Safe to say matsui wont be in pinstripes next year. If matsui took care of his body in japan,he’d be playing another 5 years for us.

  6. Rob B August 16th, 2009 at 7:37 pm

The Yankees lost just their 7th game since the All-Star break. Ugh.

No panic here. No concern here. It was just one of those games. The only real concern for me is that, when the Yankees lose, they seem to just fall apart. There just don’t seem to be many losses where the other team just beats them. Either their pitching falls apart (like today), or they just plain forget how to hit.

Did I say concern? Maybe not.

  7. m August 16th, 2009 at 7:38 pm

    Ah, man.

    Doreen,

I think it was the third inning before he walked the second batter. He’s on the mound waiting for Posada/ump to toss him the ball.

  8. Angela August 16th, 2009 at 7:40 pm

At least we didn’t hav to stay up until 1AM.

  9. Giuseppe Franco August 16th, 2009 at 7:40 pm

Matsui didn’t take care of his body in Japan?

Another commenter who doesn’t know what he’s talking about.

Matsui was the Cal Ripken of Japan during his time there. But he played on that turf for years and that stuff is going to be hard on players’ bodies.

  10. Cash is King August 16th, 2009 at 7:41 pm

Tell me which ML team that doesn’t happen with some of their losses? I find your comment amusing because that’s what happen during a course of a 162 game season.

    Thanks, m.

  12. Dr. Cox August 16th, 2009 at 7:42 pm

This team just took 3/4 from the Mariners and have won 12 out of their last 14 and there were actually people complaining?!?!

    Jesus.

  13. pat August 16th, 2009 at 7:44 pm

I don’t remember anyone complaining about them not just putting the ball in play when Johnny, Tex and Alex hit HRs in the 7-15 inning this past week.

  14. Bret the Hitman August 16th, 2009 at 7:45 pm

Matsui is 57 years old. Cut him some slack.

  15. BBFan August 16th, 2009 at 7:46 pm

    The team is doing great.
We took the series 3/4 that too on the west coast.
    Can not ask for more.
Also, we lost on the day Sox lost too, so the lead is intact.
Now let us move on and take the series from A’s.
Then sweep the Sox :) , though series win will be OK.

  16. Betsy August 16th, 2009 at 7:46 pm

Bret, I know what these guys have done in playoffs past (recent, that is) and it hasn’t been good…..BUT, this year? They’ve been unbelievable. I am a born and bred pessimist – and I surely don’t think the Yankees are a lock to even get out of the first round. However, this is an amazing offense (though granted they can all go into funks at the same time) – they have beaten some awfully good pitchers this year. They’ve won blowouts, they’ve won close games, they’ve come back multiple times and they’ve come back late in games…….Tex has 30 HR, no one else has that much, but they may end up with 8 guys with 20 HR -that’s a remarkable stat.

Asking these guys to be something they’re not is unfair and it’s unproductive. We have guys who are not Rob Deer type sluggers….and that’s a good thing.

  17. Cash is King August 16th, 2009 at 7:47 pm

Overreaction, well I would say so because you’ve got certain posters wanting Aceves to start instead of Joba in the playoffs.

  18. jennifer August 16th, 2009 at 7:47 pm

Maybe he’ll go on a tear now. Always seems to after he has his knee drained. But more and more this shows why the Yankees can’t/won’t bring him back next year. We finally got rid of Giambi and his various aliments and replaced him with Matsui.

Next year we need the DH spot for Damon (who I believe the Yankees will bring back), Jeter, etc.

  19. Cash is King August 16th, 2009 at 7:48 pm

I do agree that Matsui will be a former Yankee after this season.

  20. Betsy August 16th, 2009 at 7:48 pm

I don’t remember how Matsui hit the last time he got his knee drained – think he’ll be ok? Maybe he needs extra rest like he got during interleague.

Was today Gaudin’s throw day? I read that he threw 30 pitches – how is he supposed to come back on Wed. an start?

  21. pat August 16th, 2009 at 7:50 pm

    Tomko for the A’s tomorrow?

  22. JFK August 16th, 2009 at 7:50 pm

Girardi is in a great position you can rest Matsui a couple of games because the team is so far ahead. I would DH Posada these next couple of games and have Molina behind the plate.

  23. Bret the Hitman August 16th, 2009 at 7:53 pm

    Betsy,

HR rates plummet in the postseason which is why it’s difficult for a lineup of sluggers to propel a team through the later rounds of the playoffs.

  24. ANSKY August 16th, 2009 at 7:53 pm

Too bad Matsui’s still fighting it with the knees.

Safe to say this guy isn’t worried about any competition from him:

    http://www.nytimes.com/2009/08.....38;emc=rss

Holy cow … dat’s all I got to say about dat.

  25. SJ44 August 16th, 2009 at 7:54 pm

I think the 4th starters spot should be a competition the rest of the way. That’s how you bring out the best in young players.

Joba hasn’t done anything to merit a post-season start yet. Hopefully, he does.

However, to annoint him that spot right now, given his inconsistencies, is premature, IMO.

Panic? No. More like putting the best people in position to win games.

Let him earn the spot. It will make him better in the long run.

  26. Fran (the original) August 16th, 2009 at 7:54 pm

Betsy, on the postgame Joe said that Gaudin will probably start Wednesday but they will see how he feels.

  27. Mark H August 16th, 2009 at 7:55 pm

I know Matsui was angry he never got to play in interleague, but smart move by the trainers or whoever made the decision not to have him play any outfield. I have always liked Hideki, but he has to go after this year.

  28. SJ44 August 16th, 2009 at 7:56 pm

4th starters spot for the post-season is what I am talking about.

  29. Cash is King August 16th, 2009 at 7:56 pm

SJ, you’ve been very critical of Joba and for good reason, but he’s the 4th starter in the playoffs unless he has a complete collapse for the rest of the season.

  30. Betsy August 16th, 2009 at 7:56 pm

Bret, I agree……but again, the Yankees “sluggers” are guys that can really hit. Most post-season games are low scoring because of the quality of the pitching……the Yankees know how to win these games. They’ve actually not been slugging that much recently – most of their wins lately ARE the close games.

  31. Tak August 16th, 2009 at 7:56 pm

He had his knee drained in April.

    Betsy,

HR rates plummet in the postseason which is why it’s difficult for a lineup of sluggers to propel a team through the later rounds of the playoffs.

    ———-

Absolutely. It’s not like a big homerun hitting team like the Phillies won the World Series.

If their starting pitching does the job, this team will be fine.

Worry less about how the Yanks score runs and more about limiting the opposition.

  33. Betsy August 16th, 2009 at 7:58 pm

Fran, thanks……….that makes no sense. They planned to have the guy start, so why bring him in today? If he doesn’t start, who does? I don’t get it…

  34. Richie August 16th, 2009 at 7:59 pm

That consecutive game streak was a really stupid idea.

  35. Giuseppe Franco August 16th, 2009 at 7:59 pm

Joba is going to be the 4th starter in the postseason.

There’s no other way around it, especially since the team has refused to use Aceves in the rotation in place of Mitre.

  36. Betsy August 16th, 2009 at 8:00 pm

Matsui just needs rest now – again, like in interleague play. He’s so dangerous and we can’t afford to have him struggle for a long period of time……..It’s a delicate balance with him, but the team and Hideki have managed thus far.

  37. Cash is King August 16th, 2009 at 8:00 pm

“Fran, thanks……….that makes no sense. They planned to have the guy start, so why bring him in today? If he doesn’t start, who does? I don’t get it…”

They have Aceves and Gaudin both available for that game and with an offday the next day they’ll piece it together somehow.

  38. hugh August 16th, 2009 at 8:00 pm

This(bad knees) unfortunately is why Matsui won’t be back next year.Yankees can’t use him in the field, only DH.

  39. Cash is King August 16th, 2009 at 8:02 pm

Also, Mitre can give them a couple of innings on Wednesday.

  40. BBFan August 16th, 2009 at 8:02 pm

“Panic? No. More like putting the best people in position to win games.

Let him earn the spot. It will make him better in the long run.”

Good thought but What are the other options? Mitre, Gaudin – do not think so. Ace is not stretched, unless they start doing it now. Hughes is needed in the bullpen.

  41. Rob B August 16th, 2009 at 8:02 pm

    Hey, Cash is King:

Do you ever read entire posts, or do you just pick and choose what to rip on.

“No panic here. No concern here. It was just one of those games. The only real concern for me is that, when the Yankees lose, they seem to just fall apart. ________________________________

Now, sure, that’s amusing. But let’s add in the final part of what I said, shall we?

“Did I say concern? Maybe not.”

Now, adding in the full context of what I said, is it still so “amusing” for you? Is it amusing that I was basically pointing out that, if the only way the Yankees seem to lose is when they beat themselves, then there is no reason to be concerned?

Sorry if I didn’t make the connection for you. Didn’t think I needed to, but let’s read the whole post before you get “amused”, shall we?

  42. Cash is King August 16th, 2009 at 8:04 pm

I read your whole post and it’s still amusing to me because first you say you have no concern, but then you go ahead and list your concern about how they lose. Too funny!

  43. Betsy August 16th, 2009 at 8:04 pm

    Cash, thanks – good point.

  44. Rob in Vt. August 16th, 2009 at 8:05 pm

I agree that the biggest concern is getting Joba straightened out. He really is too talented to make things so difficult on himself.

  45. Richie August 16th, 2009 at 8:06 pm

btw, Melancon needs to be on the 25 man roster. He’s better than Gaudin.

  46. hugh August 16th, 2009 at 8:07 pm

Matsui isn’t 57,HE AND DEREK ARE THE SAME AGE,35,both born in June.Matsui is the 12th,Derek is the 26th,1974.

  47. Dave August 16th, 2009 at 8:09 pm

    pat,

Yahoo lists tomorrow’s starter as Tomko for Oakland

ESPN lists tomorrow’s starter as Mazzaro and Tuesday’s starter as TBA.

There was speculation that Justin Duscheser would make that start, but I’m not sure if he is.

  48. Rachel August 16th, 2009 at 8:09 pm

With Matsui out the next couple of days it will be a good time to get Posada and Damon some DH days. Posada if Oakland has a lefty on the mound and also Damon.

  49. Giuseppe Franco August 16th, 2009 at 8:09 pm

SJ has always taken the tough love approach with Joba and I’ve never quite understood it. He did the same thing with Hughes back in May. He’s done it with Robertson, too.

The problem with that approach is there are no better alternatives for a postseason start when your other choices are guys named Mitre, Gaudin, and Igawa along with their refusal to move their best options out of the pen (Hughes and Aceves).

  50. Rishi August 16th, 2009 at 8:10 pm

it was announced during the game that tomorrow’s starter would be Tomko

  51. Fran (the original) August 16th, 2009 at 8:10 pm

    Betsy and Cash,

I think he went to Gaudin because it was his throw day and Joe did not want to go to Robertson.

  52. 77513 August 16th, 2009 at 8:10 pm

Aceves was horrible in his start against Minnesota this year. Actually Aceves today cost the team a chance to win because it was only a 1 run game. Aceves is fine in his current role. He can pitch multiple innings out of the bullpen which is very important in case a starter struggles or gets hurt.

Not wanting Joba as the 4th starter in playoffs is a silly panic move because he has had a couple of rough starts. Put Joba against the other playoff teams 4th starters and I like the yankees chances to win that game.

  53. Rob B August 16th, 2009 at 8:10 pm

“Yahoo lists tomorrow’s starter as Tomko for Oakland”

That’s kind of ironic. He’ll be looking to make a statement, if that’s true.

Joba hasn’t been great, But people here acting like he has been awful need to get a grip. He is in his first full year as a starter, this is what they do. Anyone acting like he isn’t the 4th best starter on this team and the best option to start game 4 of a playoff game is fooling themselves.

  63. joey August 16th, 2009 at 8:20 pm

I think Jobas problem is that he is more interested in personal stats like K`s than wins. He walks guys because he nibbles and throws too much breaking stuff and walks guys cause he is looking for K`s

  64. Betsy August 16th, 2009 at 8:22 pm

Rebecca, I posted that this morning; how great is Coke?

  65. Betsy August 16th, 2009 at 8:23 pm

  66. Nick in SF in Larkspur August 16th, 2009 at 8:25 pm

Joba’s problem is Corhuskeritis. A lot of knuckleheads in Lincoln!

  67. Richie August 16th, 2009 at 8:27 pm

    joey

If he had the velo he had last season, he wouldn’t have to nibble, which imo, points to the problem, decreased velo.

  68. jennifer August 16th, 2009 at 8:28 pm

richie of course I didn’t want anyone to think he was 57!

  70. joey August 16th, 2009 at 8:29 pm

doesnt need to throw 95 but he can. I think he paces himself
What Girardi should do is anytime he walks more than 4 guys or walks two in a row, regardless of the game score he should take him out. joba had always had pin point control, so if he starts messing around yank him, he`ll get the message

  71. Rishi August 16th, 2009 at 8:30 pm

Ace of Cakes this Thursday (FoodNetwork @ 10pm) is about a cake for the Yankees…

  72. Betsy August 16th, 2009 at 8:33 pm

  73. Richie August 16th, 2009 at 8:34 pm

Last season, as a starter, Joba averaged 95 and topped out at 98-99. I have a tough time believing that he would rather average 92. He threw in the mid to upper 90s in the mLs as well. I think that as has been the case with Verlander, we will see Joba’s velo go back up next season. Meanwhile, this season will probably continue to be characterized by massive inconsistency.

  74. Rishi August 16th, 2009 at 8:34 pm

So far, my prediction for this road trip is spot on. I said we’d take 3 of 4 from SEA. I also predicted a three game sweep of OAK. Come on, guys – make me a believer!

P.S. The Yankees better beat Tomko like he’s a bad habit. Can’t have that whiner showing us up.

Yeah, that plan would work swimmingly.

What if he walks two consecutive hitters in the 2nd inning?

Are you going to take him out of the game that early just to teach him a lesson and burn out your bullpen at the same time?

All this tough love crap is just that. You can’t play that hard ass game when there are no better choices to take his spot.

A mediocre Joba is still better than a good Mitre, Igawa, or Gaudin.

    bodhisattva -

This is a response to a post of yours from the other day about ESPN being NL biased.

Good thought, but no! Insanity ;)

They are Boston biased, that’s why they ride the backsides of the Pats, Celts, Red Sox, and even during this past season, Barry Melrose and the rest were all on the Bruins.

I’m aware that Red Sox fans think that ESPN is Yankee biased, but Red Sox fans are delusional. Laughing at 9/11, hoping suicide for their players, hoping NYY players heads explode pretty much explain Red Sox fans sickness.

This next point is in reference to Skip Bayless comments by people the other day. Yes, he is a contrarian for the most part, almost like a character he plays. He enjoys making people angry…But,

When the Sox were chasing the Rays last year, he was picking the RS and slobbering all over them. And in 2007, he was licking clean the RS. He wasn’t picking any other team to come back. He had the RS every year.

He claims to be a Spurs fan, but cleans the Celtics time and again. Simply, Skip is a Boston fan through and through.

Wow, just got back from a long day and saw the box score. Joba, ACE, and Gaudin all get roughed up. Bad day all the way around. A Rod his typical 1-4 day (.250 avg). Good job and congrats to Jetes. The good news is Sox lost, Yanks still 7.5 up. That is a good thing as the Yanks can’t beat Sox in Fenway this year, thus, they will pick up 3 games next weekend.

    ———————————————————–

that is the funniest comment i ever heard.

    competition?

    mitre
    gaudin
    igawa.
    ace

    not going to happen.

    newsflash.

    there is nobody else.

    sj is that really you?

Loses don’t “mean much” to SJ….

  99. Noreaster August 16th, 2009 at 9:25 pm

No way Sox win 3 next week. We’ve got the pitching lined up to take 2 of 3.

  100. RDM August 16th, 2009 at 9:26 pm

And on a side note, great job by Y.E. Yang…..and for Asian golfers…what a day for them!

  101. RDM August 16th, 2009 at 9:27 pm

I don’t know Noreaster, Yanks record against LA and Boston on the road is like 0-9 or something….for some reason they do poorly against these teams on the road and these teams are the ones they will face in the playoffs

  102. Noreaster August 16th, 2009 at 9:30 pm

LAA I totally agree with, they’ve had our number for years. But Boston isn’t the same team we played last time in Fenway, they are the same team we just beat up. They’ve got 3 automatic outs in their lineup and base runners have stolen 98 of the last 99 bases. They are pretty bad right now.

  103. RDM August 16th, 2009 at 9:31 pm

The thing about Boston is they have Lester and Beckett, arguably the two top starters in the AL. AJ and CC are close. Beckett is automatic. I agree, Boston isn’t the same team as earlier in the season…we shall sell….

  104. bru August 16th, 2009 at 9:32 pm

    RDM

boston stinks & are in trouble.

    farm system stinks
    old
    no ss
    bad expensive rf
    bay is a fa
    no catcher/1b/3b
no power from ells & pedroia

  105. Jeremy August 16th, 2009 at 9:33 pm

    RDM

Your an idiot ! The Yankees can pick up more games on the Sox because they will take 2 out of 3 from them. The Red Sox are overrated, and the Angels are overrated. The only good pitcher the Angels have is John Lackey. You see that their offense is the only reason why they are winning games.

  106. Noreaster August 16th, 2009 at 9:33 pm

The thing that makes CC and AJ a better combination than Lester and Beckett, is that CC and AJ don’t have to pitch to our lineup. Our guys get to pitch to the Boston lineup.

  107. bru August 16th, 2009 at 9:33 pm

oh & no starters after becket & lester

  108. RDM August 16th, 2009 at 9:35 pm

Well bru, after CC and AJ….Pettitte, Mitre, Gaudin and Joba…..Pettitte doing well, Joba struggling last few starts and Mitre and Gaudin are 5IP, 5/6 runs a game….

  109. Noreaster August 16th, 2009 at 9:35 pm

It is pretty amazing that with the genius Theo running the Sox farm system, they can’t produce a good fielding shortstop or a catcher.

  110. RDM August 16th, 2009 at 9:36 pm

“the Angles are overated” What? They are 25 games over .500. They don’t lose at home to the Yanks. They are right now the 2nd best team in the AL if not MLB.

  111. Jim Pir-one August 16th, 2009 at 9:36 pm

This is for the Yankees fans here and RDM, the Red Sox troll.

    http://nintendo8.com/game/5/r.b.i._baseball_3/

If you enjoy seeing some old Yankees names, and even some Boston ones from when they were still nothings.

To be honest, why do people say that the Yankees have a rivalry with the Red Sox. The Yankees dont care about the RS. Why would you, when a team has 26 as compared to an 86 year drought and 7 total.

  123. Christina- Giants Camp and Mike Francesa August 16th, 2009 at 9:47 pm

Erica- no point in pushing Wright at this point. The Mets are long out of the playoff contention and I think they are smart being cautious with him.

Wasn’t Damon out for a while when he had his concussion? I think he said it took him years before he really felt the same way again. I know Hill took about 13 months for his recovery from it. Scary stuff.

  124. Jeremy August 16th, 2009 at 9:47 pm

    RDM

The Angels offense is keeping them in games. Their pitching is not like it used to be, Lackey is the only reliable starter in their rotation. Pitching wins, and their lack of it is going to do them in in the postseason.

The yankees have three good starters, and that’s all you really need to be good in the postseason. And your still an idiot !

  125. jimmy August 16th, 2009 at 9:47 pm

Is that for real with Wang’s wife and Matsui? Can someone give me a link or tell me what the joke it about????

Damon suffered his concussion during the 2003 playoffs. Not sure how much he missed. But he has said that his whole “caveman” look came about that offseason when he was in too much pain to shave

Matt Cain is a total loser.

He was on ESPN saying beaming Wright in the ear hole with a 95 mph pitch was no big deal because Wright didn’t need a stretcher to get into the ambulance.

And then he mocks the fans at Citifield.

  131. S.A.--Serenity Now August 16th, 2009 at 10:01 pm

“I do believe we have to be cautious with this,” Manuel said, “and we will be.”

    ================

    Ya think? :?
The guy is the face of the Mets, be very cautious with him.
Forget about 2009, have him come back in 2010 and bring a voodoo priest to bless CitiField and the players

  132. jennifer August 16th, 2009 at 10:03 pm

Did he really say that? What a jack ***. And why was he mocking the fans? He knows full well that if that happened to a Giant, the fans would boo too. It doesn’t matter if it was on purpose or not he was HIT IN THE HEAD! He could have been killed! He has post concussion syndrome. Ask Wayne Chrebet how it feels! Now I know he has had a number of concussions, but while he was playing, he said he’d deal with the after effects, later he wanted to play. I read an article, where he still to this day has issues.

  133. MONNIE D August 16th, 2009 at 10:03 pm

RDM’s a joke. Just talk about him as if he isn’t here. An example: “I’ll put a hundy on RDM being a closet Met fan.”

  134. jennifer August 16th, 2009 at 10:04 pm

I wonder who told the Mets to just dl him? I wonder if a doctor told them to dl him. Not trusting that he would be back in a few days.

  135. V August 16th, 2009 at 10:04 pm

    Get well matsui

  136. Raymagnetic August 16th, 2009 at 10:04 pm

Nothing good is going to happen for the Mets until they do right by Willie Randolph.

They should have never fired him the way they did.

    They r cursed.

  137. jennifer August 16th, 2009 at 10:05 pm

Maybe someone should bean Matt Cain in the head, and if he gets up point and laugh. I’m glad he thinks it wasn’t a big deal.

  138. Tunnel Man August 16th, 2009 at 10:07 pm

    jennifer August 16th, 2009 at 10:03 pm

    yes, he really said that.

  139. jennifer August 16th, 2009 at 10:08 pm

“I know it’s a difficult thing for David. He’s a team guy. He’s a huge part of this organization,” Manuel said, moments after learning Wright was put on the disabled list. “To lose David Wright is not good for me, but it’s good for David Wright. If they had cleared him, that would be different. It takes it out of my hands completely.

  140. Dave August 16th, 2009 at 10:09 pm

Brett Tomko going tomorrow… im nervous.

you know he will be out to exact revenge on us for releasing him.

  141. Nick in SF in Larkspur August 16th, 2009 at 10:14 pm

    An angry Tomko?

You don’t have to paint me a picture, that could be a portrait of misery.

  142. Tunnel Man August 16th, 2009 at 10:16 pm

Brett Tomko hasn’t pitched since July 11th and he hasn’t started a game all year. We’re looking at a 5 inning performance.

  143. m August 16th, 2009 at 10:21 pm

Tomko owes us. He was pretty crappy at times.

  144. Nick in SF in Larkspur August 16th, 2009 at 10:25 pm

If he just tries his best, that’s good enough for me.

  145. S.A.--Serenity Now August 16th, 2009 at 10:26 pm

I forgot, did Tomko finish that painting of Joe Torre. I mean the painting of Youuuse?

  146. Nick in SF in Larkspur August 16th, 2009 at 10:30 pm

Maybe that’s what he was mad about… he never got a chance to finish the painting. Suddenly it all makes sense.

  147. Marcy Sheiner August 16th, 2009 at 10:31 pm

I could have lived without this information.

  148. jake [bring back shelley] August 16th, 2009 at 10:34 pm

This is all we need, matsui to get injured and not be able to hit, he has been so productive lately.

Hopefully 3 days off does his knee well.

Let’s get ‘em tomorrow night guys!

  149. timlaw August 17th, 2009 at 5:16 pm

I really like Matsui but alas with is bad knees he will no longer be a Yankee next year IMO….As they will need the DH spot more and more on a rotation basis for Posada, and hopefully Damon if they are smart enough to bring him back…I guess that will all depend on how long a contract damon wants and for how much.
