Draft signings deadline is tonight

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Aug 17, 2009 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Teams have until midnight tonight to get their draft picks signed. Most of the attention will be focused on whether the Nationals strike a deal with Scott Boras for Stephen Strasburg.

As for the Yankees, Damon Oppenheimer has confirmed that first-round pick Slade Heathcott and fifth-round pick Caleb Cotham are signed. Heathcott signed for $2.2 million.

Second-round pick J.R. Murphy signed for $1.25 million, according to Baseball America.

That would mean the Yankees have agreements with 13 of their top 14 picks.

We’ll try and keep you posted as the news comes in.

    from Lane Meyer:

on Cotham: “From reading the previous news I’ve posted on him you probably already realize it, but for me, Cotham is a steal in the 5th round due to the injury he fought through for the second half of his season at Vandy, and the best pitcher the Yankees will take away from this draft. I expect to see him walking all over the low minors when he begins his career.”

hard not to be excited about this guy…hopefully his injuries are in his past and he can have a successful pro career

  2. jennifer August 17th, 2009 at 1:35 pm

Question last night someone posted that Matt Cain made a comment that the beaning of David Wright wasn’t a big deal because he was able to walk to the ambulance. Well I told me co-worker who is a big Giant fan. He doesn’t believe me. Anyone have it in writing so I can show it to him?

  3. Scott August 17th, 2009 at 1:36 pm

A-Jax with another 4 strikeout performance yesterday

man he has fallen off a cliff…

  4. m August 17th, 2009 at 1:39 pm

Are you guys doing the Price is Right game for Strasbourg?

I don’t care if he signs or not, but who knows what he could go for.

  5. betsy August 17th, 2009 at 1:39 pm

Jennifer, I just don’t believe that……I don’t have any proof one way or another, but I think Met fans want blood from a stone from this kid. Cain looked distraught when he hit Wright – there’s no way he would make such a dumb, insensitive comment.

  6. Rishi August 17th, 2009 at 1:41 pm

I know it might be too early, but anyone know the “magic number” – trying to understand around when it might be so I can plan accordingly – I love watching the celebrations.

  7. betsy August 17th, 2009 at 1:42 pm

I know nothing about Tyler, but it’s always a shame when the Yanks can’t come to terms with their draft picks. It’s amazing that these kids haven’t thrown a pitch in professional baseball and they think they are entitled (and they end up getting, unfortunately) to millions of dollars. How do they know they won’t get hurt between now and next draft? Why wouldn’t they want to take the $$$ (it’s not like it’s chump change) and start to live their dream?

I hope that this means the Yankees are going after Chapman and not that they’ve gotten cheap on their draft picks

  8. jennifer August 17th, 2009 at 1:42 pm

betsy- I’m not so sure I believe it either. Especially since if it was said, I’d think it would be all over the radio. I do know that he tipped his cap to the booing Met crowd, which was pretty rude in it of itself.

  9. ADam August 17th, 2009 at 1:43 pm

    Jennifer…
Are you sure it was written.. or said by an analyst. The Baseball tonight guys are the worst at saying “what happened in the clubhouse/dugouts” They honestly all talk a lot of $*it.

See Rick Sutcliffe’s comments about 2 months +/- ago about Arod giving Tex verbal clues while Tex is batting…. If it’s written I hope you find it… if it is not written.. be careful..

    Just a tip

  10. jennifer August 17th, 2009 at 1:43 pm

    Rishi

38? That is the Soxs elimination number.

  11. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Montero Fanaticus Primus August 17th, 2009 at 1:44 pm

    13 out of 14…

Have the Yankees ever signed every pick in a year?

  12. Joey Ramone August 17th, 2009 at 1:44 pm

If Cain said something like that, then the media would be all over him…

In fact, he seems pretty distraught about the beaning…

  13. m August 17th, 2009 at 1:44 pm

    Rishi,

Right now it’s 38. Our magic # is Boston’s elimination # in these standings.

  14. Rishi August 17th, 2009 at 1:44 pm

Thanks, Jennifer…need to make sure i’m either in NY or have the DVRs set. I have tickets for 2 games in September, but hopefully it won’t go that long ;)

  15. RMEL August 17th, 2009 at 1:44 pm

I read that Tyler Lyons may have medical issues….that could be the reason the Yankees may not want to invested in a player with a issue

“I hope that this means the Yankees are going after Chapman and not that they’ve gotten cheap on their draft picks”

    Betsy,
They’ve spent 4.1M for just three players, how is that going cheap?

  19. jennifer August 17th, 2009 at 1:46 pm

    Rishi,

Any combination of Yankee wins and red sox loses lowers the number. So even though we lost yesterday, our number still decreased by one because the soxs lost.

  20. Doit ! August 17th, 2009 at 1:46 pm

    LETS GO YANKEES !!!

  21. Andrew August 17th, 2009 at 1:46 pm

Cain’s quote in the SF Chronicle:

“Obviously, an 0-2 pitch, it’s a situation where I’m just trying to go inside to him. I got out of my mechanics and left it up and in on him. Hopefully, he’s all right. They said he walked to the ambulance. Obviously, he walked off the field. I hope he’ll be all right and get back playing soon.”

    $17-20m for strasburg sounds fair

  23. m August 17th, 2009 at 1:47 pm

    Rishi,

The more Boston loses, the quicker we clinch.

Don’t forget to factor that in. :)

Do we still have the largest division lead in baseball? Maybe we will be the first…

  24. Fran (the original) and OPPC member August 17th, 2009 at 1:48 pm

Jennifer, they can take the number down a lot this weekend!

  25. jennifer August 17th, 2009 at 1:49 pm

yep if we beat the soxs, it will decrease by 2 :-)
    Where did the season go?

  26. Rishi August 17th, 2009 at 1:50 pm

    Thanks guys –

Trisha want to start taking bets on when the Yankees might clinch? Or is that a jinx? (I think it’s probably “jinx-y”)

I’m at the games on September 14th (LAA) and 27th (BOS) – hopefully it’s done by then!

  27. m August 17th, 2009 at 1:51 pm

    In general, Happy # = 162-[our wins + Boston's losses].

  28. jennifer August 17th, 2009 at 1:53 pm

m actually 163, gotta add the extra game to eliminate a tie.

  29. Jeter2007 August 17th, 2009 at 1:53 pm

BA says murphy signed for $1.25m

  30. RalphieD (OPPC) August 17th, 2009 at 1:54 pm

the reason the yanks couldnt sign every guy like lyons or meade is mainly because slade got double the recommended bonus..and murphy got well above slot…

to say they are going cheap is kinda silly, especially when you see cotham’s bonus which is 4 times slot

  31. m August 17th, 2009 at 1:56 pm

    jennifer,

Okay, so when Boston was the WC leader it was 162 games?

  32. Cash is King August 17th, 2009 at 1:57 pm

The Yankees so far have signed 9 out of their first 10 picks. So far they’ve spent about 4.8M for those nine players. We’ll see what other players the Yankees sign later today.

  33. Erik A August 17th, 2009 at 1:57 pm

I’ve heard some people whining about the money, but way to go Yankees.

  34. Jay T August 17th, 2009 at 1:58 pm

    Scott-

I was at the Bulls/ Yankees game Friday night. A Jax was 2-5 with a 2 run double and an RBI triple. He did strikeout once. He has not fallen off the cliff. Last I saw, he was hitting over .300, just a little power though. That is still pretty strong.

  35. m August 17th, 2009 at 1:58 pm

Nevermind, reread the bottom of the page.

But the WC uses the 162 games. Right?

  36. Cash is King August 17th, 2009 at 1:59 pm

By the way, Lyons did get hurt earlier this year so those that think the Yankees might have some medical issues with him might not be wrong as Bittle from last year is an example of that same type of concern.

  37. Doit ! August 17th, 2009 at 2:00 pm

just perusing si.com, to me it looks like big papi slimmed down.

  38. Mo-Butter August 17th, 2009 at 2:00 pm

I live in Philly and constantly argue with the Philly faithful over the finer points of our two line-ups… I am constantly accused of being a massive homer, but consider myself more un-biased than i am given credit for. Am I unjustified in thinking that our infield defense is just as good as the Phils?? Im sick of hearing about how jimmy is the best SS since the Oz

  39. 86w183 August 17th, 2009 at 2:01 pm

The Yanks and many other teams don’t give a rat’s rear end about “slot”. That’s just a creation by Baby Doc Selig that more and more teams are learning can hurt their player development process.

I’m convinced there will be some sort of bonus slotting system approved in the next CBA and perhaps an international draft/slotting system. It’s unfair to American high school and college kids that they get less while 16-year-old Dominicans get excessive bonuses.

  40. Scott August 17th, 2009 at 2:01 pm

Not signing Lion is just further proof that Hal is not George. George had no limits.

  41. jennifer August 17th, 2009 at 2:02 pm

m I would think it would be 163 also. You want to in your mind eliminate ties. Say the Rangers and Soxs tied. I think they go to a one game play off. Not sure, now.

  42. Cash is King August 17th, 2009 at 2:03 pm

“Not signing Lion is just further proof that Hal is not George. George had no limits.”

George didn’t have this economy to deal with along with the cost of a newly build stadium.

  43. Mo-Butter August 17th, 2009 at 2:04 pm

Jennifer… if the rangers and sox tied they would also have to split their season series in order to play an extra game

  44. m August 17th, 2009 at 2:04 pm

Ack, Jennifer. Went back and read the WC page. You are correct 163 it is.

  45. Oak Man August 17th, 2009 at 2:05 pm

And if we come up short on the Chapman bidding, people will say he isin’t worth it and is too big of a risk to spend big money on, and that Hal/Cashman are saving that money to sign Halladay after the season or on some random IFA next July that is better than Chapman…

  46. CB August 17th, 2009 at 2:05 pm

Let’s not turn Tyler Lyons into Nolan Ryan.

He would be a nice arm to add to the organization but not going to be some huge difference maker.

  47. Rishi August 17th, 2009 at 2:06 pm

“As a Yankee fan growing up, I played my whole career here,” Jeter said. “Anytime there’s a record that’s involved with the Yankees, it’s special. We all like to be a part of history.”

  48. m August 17th, 2009 at 2:06 pm

I love how we don’t have money to sign Lyons, but we have money to sign Chapman for $100M.

There’s more to the story than a few hundred thousand.

  49. Cash is King August 17th, 2009 at 2:06 pm

Jeet is the man. He can play SS until he retires, even if he becomes a defensive liability, as far as i am concerned

  52. RalphieD (OPPC) August 17th, 2009 at 2:09 pm

MLBTR says the rays dont expect to sign their 1st and 2nd round picks…thats harsh

  53. Hokiehill August 17th, 2009 at 2:09 pm

Pete, I just saw the last post. If I’m the lucky one, since I live out of town I’ll gladly take roundtrip airfare, 1-2 nights at a hotel in NY and a pair of legends seats to a Yankees game. Sounds about fair, right?

  54. jennifer August 17th, 2009 at 2:12 pm

    Mo-Butter

DUH that’s right. I knew that. My brain is a little fried from all the sun this weekend. :-)

  55. m August 17th, 2009 at 2:12 pm

Check out Heyman’s latest on what was reportedly offered to Toronto for Halladay.

IF that’s true, then Ricciardi/Jay’s ownership deserve to be a perenial 3rd place team.

  56. m August 17th, 2009 at 2:13 pm

    *Boston’s offer for Halladay.

  57. 86w183 August 17th, 2009 at 2:13 pm

    Mo-Butter—

Not true on the tie-breaker. the only time head to head is used for playoff berths is if teams tie for the division title AND the wild card. If that happens they use head to head to determine which is which and don’t bother with an extra game. That happened with the Yanks and Sawx a couple of years ago.

If Boston and Texas tie for the wild card they will play one game for the playoff spot no matter how their regular season match ups went.

I believe head to head can also be used if division winners that face each other have exactly the same record and the tie-breaker determines home field advantage.

Whatever happens with Lyons it’s not even tip money for the Chapman negotiations if/when they happen.

  58. Dave August 17th, 2009 at 2:15 pm

    m,

I saw that. How the hell did Toronto turn that down? Thankfully, they did. Doc in Boston would have been brutal.

  59. CB August 17th, 2009 at 2:15 pm

Why are the Red Sox still leaking rumors from before the trade deadline?

Why do they keep doing this? It’s just so strange.

Great. You tried to make a trade. It didn’t go through.

All this makes it sound like the generosity of this “5 player package” they keep shopping around might not be as appetizing as people in the media seem to think.

The Sox leak more rumors about trades they didn’t execute on than any other organization.

Do they want a gold star for trying real hard?

  60. Fran (the original) and OPPC member August 17th, 2009 at 2:18 pm

    m,

what was the offer or where can I see it?

  61. Stephen August 17th, 2009 at 2:19 pm

I think the Sox leak those names for future reference.

They’re telling other teams (such as the Padres with Adrien Gonzalez) that these players will be available for the right player.

  62. CB August 17th, 2009 at 2:19 pm

The Red Sox are tanking. Penny and Tazawa both pitch poorly. The club is no longer in the lead for the wild card. The Red Sox fanbase is livid.

And it just so happens that Heyman today – the day after the brutal Texas series – reports that the Sox made this wonderful offer for Halladay how could Ricciardi turn it down.

    That’s quite a coincidence.

  63. m August 17th, 2009 at 2:24 pm

I feel dirty for posting this. :P

Boston is thought to have offered a five-prospect package of Buchholz, Michael Bowden, Justin Masterson, Nick Hagadone and a position player for Halladay, and even more than that for that Hernandez, whose value is higher because he isn’t eligible for free agency until after 2011, a year later than Halladay. Comparable packages with more position players were dangled for Gonzalez, but Epstein, knowing Padres GM and past mentor Kevin Towers well, moved on fairly quickly when he could sense they weren’t going to reach a deal.

Good job by the Yankees for signing the vast majority of their picks! It’ll help make up for last years disaster.

I agree that the draft should be a big focus of the next collective bargaining agreement. It is a travesty that the Nationals and Pirates can never sign their #1 picks because they hold out. The Yankees and Sox and Angels shouldn’t be able to pick up 1st round talent in the 3rd and 4th rounds because of ‘signability’, it just isn’t right. Institute some kind of fixed % of revenues goes to the draft and your bonus is fixed to what your draft position is.

Rish – hmmm. I think that could be a jinxy thing. Why don’t we wait til the end of August and then decide whether we should do it. I think it will be cool by then.

Just a drive by to say:

    1. A good listen if you want to hear panic and total Monday morning quarterbacking is WEEI. But I am not putting them down entirely because I hear some of the same stuff here and we’re up 7.5! Of course I enjoy listening to it, what with the Sux being such a fav of mine. :)

    2. I have the right to feel any way I want, even if nobody else feels the same way. I am going to detest Stephen Strasburg if he doesn’t sign with the Nats. It doesn’t have to make sense to you. I love the Nats. How in hell did the Rays get to the top of the heap? By signing the top guns. But with Boreass as his agent, I won’t be surprised if he doesn’t do it, even though I understand they offered him the highest signing bonus ever offered.

    3. I believe that the Ortiz karma has permeated RSN and the Suxers themselves. I understand Wakefield limped off the mound on Saturday so they have some concerns there.

    Later y’all!

    :)

  71. austinmac August 17th, 2009 at 2:40 pm

I suspect the Red Sox are leaking their offers to lessen their fanbase anger for not helping the teams pitching at the trade deadline. Of course, who knows if this leak is accurate.
