It’s only two games

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Aug 18, 2009 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

The Yankees in the last two games:

3 runs
15 of 68 (.221)
2 walks
11 strikeouts
0-9 with RISP
1 home run

Could today be bust-out day? Meanwhile stealthy MVP candidate Derek Jeter is 9 for 20 on this road trip and is up to .327 with a .392 OBP.

Meanwhile, two things to note from the division. Dustin Pedroia left the Red Sox today to be with his wife for the birth of their first child. Good luck to him. And Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon dyed his hair jet black. The Rays are having a “Ring of Fire” road trip. The players all have to dress in black as they travel and Maddon is paying tribute to the great Johnny Cash.

Last year Tampa had a trip where they all wore Ed Hardy t-shirts. How great is that? Every manager, at least the good ones, knows how to keep his team loose. Maddon certainly finds unique ways.

UPDATE: 5:59 p.m.: He’s a photo of the “new” Maddon:

Why is the media dumping all over Rodriguez for taking steroids yet are not mentioning that Jason Bartlett and Ben Zobrist have hit more HRs this year than their entire career?

    It is a double standard.

  2. Peter Abraham August 18th, 2009 at 4:00 pm

    Devin:

Just emerge from a hole? Nobody has talked about A-Rod and steroids in six months and there is now drug testing. Throwing players names out there without cause is irresponsible.

  3. Bronx August 18th, 2009 at 4:04 pm

Not sure what the problem is with talking about Rodriguez using steroids. He did admit as much.

I sure hope the yanks bats wake up tonight. You dont want them to be in a hitting slump heading into the weekend.

‘Ring of Fire’ road trip as their season may be going up in flames?

At least it isn’t a ‘Boy Named Sue’ trip, I guess.

At least for one day, the inmates in San Quentin were the luckiest men in America:

  12. Neil August 18th, 2009 at 4:16 pm

The Yankees will get back on track tonight and things will be business as usual as Boston continues to stumble.
Better pitching is the only real concern for the Rays.
They control their own destiny with upcoming games with Boston.
The Rangers are doing well to hang on this late in the season.

Not at all, in my book. Have you SEEN Ed Hardy shirts?

    hey pete,

Would you ever consider a job as a sports talk show host? The rubbish that is put out nowadays and passed off as sports talk on radio is downright unlistenable….

do you have an agent that is looking into these things for you? If not you really should get one….now is the time to strike – as your popularity is at its highest and your talent level is miles ahead of everyone else on the radio..

  15. Nick in SF in Larkspur August 18th, 2009 at 4:18 pm

No worries, yyy. The Folsom and San Quentin records are both great and the CD re-issues that came out after the movie have lots of bonus tracks that weren’t on the originals.

    :) Arsenal! :)

Black attire for those crisp & cool Tampa-in-August evenings.

Nothing brings a team together quite like chafed thighs.

Who would Girardi have the Yankees dress like?

  17. Vincent August 18th, 2009 at 4:19 pm

0-9 with RISP? Should have dealt for V-Mart and put Posada at DH.

    kidding.

I just hope Jeter continues to rack up hits and pad his numbers between now and the end of the year.

He is owed an MVP after getting “jobbed” back in 2006. I know Mourneau had a tremendous final 6 weeks that year and had the “numbers” to justify getting the MVP (plus he helped lead to the Twins to the AL Central title). But Jeter was great that entire season and during June and July that year he carried the Yankees while Matsui and Sheffield were hurt and Arod was a basket case both offensively and defensively.

In case anyone’s coming to Boston this weekend, Bar10 (my fave in Boston) at The Westin Copley Place in Back Bay is having a huge pre-game event, a NY vs. Boston battle of the beers and chowder. Beers are only $2, Brooklyn Lager I think.
    Safe travels.

Someone sent me a blog that has your cousins posts in it. I read it, thought that’s an unusual name and afterward saw your post here.

Seemed too much of a coincidence for it not to be your cousin.

I could give you the link to the blog but it has your cousins full name so you may not want it linked here.

Hey Pete, if Josh Beckett has a couple of bad outings between now and the end of the year and Boston continues to flounder … and at the same time, Mo continues to be in lock down mode the rest of year, do you see a realistic chance that he will get serious consideration for Cy Young?

As much as Jeter was robbed of winning the MVP in 2006, I think the greater injustice was having Bartolo Colon win the 2005 Cy Young over Mo.

  33. The Phranchise August 18th, 2009 at 4:41 pm

Johnny D had some nice swings with nothing to show last night. I think tonight he will have a nice game and the Yankees will get off to a nice lead. CC will shut them down.

Would love to see DJ finally get an MVP award, deserved it a few years back for sure. I do feel though that above everything else Tex has put a stamp on this team and a strong finish puts him on top. He clearly has been the difference maker in this lineup and suddenly the defense on this team vastly improved. Has a ball been hit by him this year? If Arod was 100% healthy no doubles down the lines. And Jeter up the center a SS this year with Cano focused. Sick infield defensively.

    Problem #1 with Jon Gosselin-

Ed Hardy is all he wears.

  38. The Phranchise August 18th, 2009 at 4:44 pm

The Ed Hardy shirts just remind me of Moose making fun of the younger guys as he sported the cheap online humor shirts.

Rays will need a little more than keeping guys loose, like Upton showing up this year? Is it lack of focus or drive with him? Strange. Like his lack of power all year until the playoffs last year. He is simply too talented to be this bad.

“I think the greater injustice was having Bartolo Colon win the 2005 Cy Young over Mo.

    Uh try over Johan Santana”

In 2005, Johan Santana was 16-7, 2.87 ERA … Mo was 7-4, 1.38 ERA, 43 saves in 47 chances (2 of the blown saves came in the first series of the year against Boston). We can agree to disagree.

BTW, Mo finished 2nd in the voting that year so I wasnt the only one who thought Mo’s year was better than Santana’s.

    yikes is right.

I sure hope they don’t have Adrian Gonzalez on their team.

lol — just a little bit off on that one…

As people say, baseball is a game of failure.

If a team wins 100 games they lose 62. A great season.
If a batter fails 7 out of 10 times, he hits .300

Just because the Yanks lost 2 in a row, don’t worry. They will be fine.

Johan Santana pitched 231 Innings in the American League, compiling a 2.87 ERA, while striking out 238 and only walking 45. He had a SUB 1 WHIP as a starting pitcher. His K/B was over 5, his H/9 was less than 8.

Mariano Rivera pitched 78 excellent innings but was in no way any more valuable than Johan Santana, who pitched 3 times as many innings as Mariano while maintaining a similiar quality of pitching.

The baseball writers who agree with you were most likely idiots. They did vote for Bartolo Colon’s 20 wins after all.

So Rishi’s cousin is not the drunk non-baseball fan that called up pat in the middle of the night? Huh.

From the last thread. Lance didn’t deserve to be on that list.

Lance can be a little arrogant, but that could be from rubbing elbows with europeans too much. Otherwise he’s a great athlete and good guy. Boo on those who don’t like Lance.

Jeter is Mr. Consistency and I’d love to see him win the MVP. His batting approach is the best on the team for playoff baseball.

    3B Arod
    DH Posada
    2B Cano
    RF Swisher
    CF Melky
    C Molina

  103. miggs August 18th, 2009 at 6:18 pm

Looking at all these lineups many people believe Molina will catch CC again. I don’t know, Jose has caught at least twice in the last 5 games.

And I’m banking on Matsui being back. Almost no one has him playing tonight. Had that knee drained 2 days ago, hopefully he’s ready to go.

Erica great job. This game should have its own thread.

“The players all have to dress in black as they travel and Maddon is paying tribute to the great Johnny Cash…. How great is that?”

Hmmmm, sounds suspiciously familiar to the New York Football Giants all having to dress in black (except Eli wouldnt do it) as they traveled to either the NFC Championship Game or Super Bowl 42 in their championship year.

I cant remember which game they did it for, but in answer to your queestion Pete, yes it’s really great that Joe Maddon can copy Michael Strahan. Absolutely amazing!

    p.s. 18-1! :)

  106. Number 23 August 18th, 2009 at 6:34 pm

I have to admire Maddon’s respect for the Man in Black.

I apologize for not properly familiarizing myself with the intricacies of Twitter.

I was just pointing out something I saw on this page that I thought was a good laugh.

Thanks for the condescending remark though.

  108. BBB August 18th, 2009 at 6:45 pm

Also, Johnny Cash is to country as Metallica is to “metal” (if you wanna call the music they’ve made since 1992 “metal”) and as Nirvana was to grunge – mostly for posers, not so much for real fans of their respective genre.

Not to attack Maddon, I’ve liked him since I heard him use “ameliorate” (correctly no less!) in the WS rain delay press conference…but still prefer Strahan’s reasons for wanting his team to wear all black…they were on their way to the other team’s funeral after all :) Now THAT’s something Johnny Cash would approve of. Michael Strahan shot a man in Reno, just to watch him die!

He looks more like Elvis Costello than Johnny Cash, Pete!
