promo_giambi_bobbleheadThe Athletics released Jason Giambi on Aug. 7. But Jason Giambi Bobblehead Day will go on as scheduled on Friday.

I need to get my hands on one of those. Just for the historical value.

Bobblehead night for a player who doesn’t play for the team anymore…does this strike anyone else as weird? He might be the only player to be in the stands for his own bobblehead night!

  3. m August 19th, 2009 at 11:09 am

That’s just the dumbest thing. That’s just like re-gifting. Just doesn’t mean the same, you know?

This happened with Victor as well? That one’s okay, because that wasn’t his first rodeo. haha.

Didn’t Cleveland have Victor Martinez bobblehead night right after they traded him to the RS?

Now that makes me kind of sad. I was a big-time Tino fan who deeply resented Giambi’s presence the entire time he was here, especially when the steroid stuff came out. (“We blew off Tino for this bum???”) But once he was back on the A’s where he belonged, I wished him the best and kind of felt he deserved a better fate. At any rate, that’s a pretty spiffy bobblehead. I’m sure Giambi still has a lot of fans in Oakland who will be happy to get one.

    Pete,

I had the pleasure of meeting up with Buddy Bianchalana and Nick in SF in Larkspur for the final three innings of the game in Oakland.

Let me just say that you have some stand-up guys reading and contributing to the success of your blog.

Buddy, next beer is on me!!

    Go Yankees.

  15. Doreen August 19th, 2009 at 11:18 am

Maybe it’s just not a good idea to have bobblehead doll night at all anywhere. They schedule these things at the beginning of the season, they print the schedules and place the orders.

I’m sure the good fans of Oakland will cherish their Giambi bobbleheads nonetheless.

I think the exact same thing. You’d think that it’d be a freebie because they need a get-me-over pitch. Are they guessing wrong? Or are they over-anxious? I’ll go with they’re not clutch. ;)

  20. Jaewon August 19th, 2009 at 11:30 am

AL CY Young: Who gets it? I have 6 possible candidates: Greinke, Halladay, Felix Hernandez, Verlander, Beckett, and CC. I think right now, Beckett deserves it — his numbers are verrry similar to CC’s, only his are slightly better. They are tied for the most wins, but the others all have better ERAs. What do you think?

    Al greinke halladay verlander beckett

NL Lincecum hands down with Haren as runner up

  24. Chris August 19th, 2009 at 11:37 am

In real news, Bruney, Coke, Hughes, and Mo will be available tonight to keep sharp for the Boston series with tomorrow off.
It will be ideal for Gaudin to give 5 good innings with lots of run support.

    Sheffield going packing??

I love the last line of this story-
“The Florida Marlins and Texas Rangers are both supposedly looking for somebody like Sheffield, but he says he won’t go anywhere that doesn’t already have a strong lineup. He doesn’t want to end up being a scapegoat. “The light always seems to be on me. I’ve had that light on me for [my whole career]. I don’t need that now,” he told the paper.”

I wasn’t aware he was the biggest star on the Yankees when he was here. Did you guys know that??

Sheffield wasn’t the biggest star, but he had the best offensive season on the 2004 team and probably the second or third best offensive season on the 2005 team.

    And, he did attract attention.

A.J. has been great, but so far not as good as some of the others. If he dominates down the stretch, he definitely has a shot. But I don’t think he’s gonna end up better than the others

    kelvin:
If CC keeps getting better — I think he will win it. If last night was any indication, CC is on the upswing and Beckett on the down. But there are many good AL pitchers.

    Fran:
Mo has been amazing, but it goes back to the whole Joba argument — a great starter is more valuable than a great reliever.

I would vote for Halladay. Its a shame he is in Toronto.

People always look at wins first and its probably the least telling baseball statistic.

A guy in the bullpen can throw one pitch and get a win. A starter can throw hard for 100+ pitches and dominate a team for 8 innings, and then get a no decision because the bullpen blew the lead.

Wins are the worst stat in baseball.

but they did give the Cy Young to Gagne in 2003. He had 55 saves; don’t think Mo will get to that.

  46. betsy August 19th, 2009 at 12:09 pm

AJ’s not a CY contender, but that’s ok. He’s been just terrific for us………the only thing with him is that he’s wilder this year than usual and he hasn’t K’d as many people. Who knows, though – the latter could be on purpose, to help him go longer.

Does anyone know how many innings AJ has averaged in his career per start…..or, at least, the last couple of years? This year, it seems like he almost always gives us 7 innings…that’s pretty much a definition of a workhorse, but yet no one associates that word with AJ. He’s stayed healthy this year – not so much as an ache or a pain ; thank you, Doc Halladay, lol.

Erica, yep – it’s ridiculous that AJ and CC give us innings. They are so selfish, hogging the innings to themselves. Did they ever think that maybe other pitchers might want to pitch?

I think Beckett will get it……I know Greinke’s ERA is quite a bit lower than everyone else’s, but he doesn’t have that many wins to show for it and Beckett’s been brilliant (for the most part) since the first few weeks of the season.

  47. hey kelvin says August 19th, 2009 at 12:10 pm

I don’t know what Doc’s won/loss record he is…….he hasn’t pitched as well since the injury, but for me, he’s the best pitcher in baseball. I’d like to see him win it again, but I don’t think he will.

  50. hey kelvin says August 19th, 2009 at 12:15 pm

Don’t think beckett nor CC will win but they will be in the top 5 ballot.

Halladay, Greinke, Verlander have currently better chances because of whip, era,k’s

“When I was in HS, we were told not to swing at the first pitch after a walk. The Yanks seem to encourage it. Coach Letendre would be mad”

Chances of a get-it-over fastball that could be hit a long way are also good after the guy in front of you has walked. All depends on the batter, the pitcher and situation in games.

  52. Andrew August 19th, 2009 at 12:20 pm

Greinke was pitching to an ERA at or around 1.00 for alot of the early season and he is still throwing great, he to me is the guy to beat for Cy Young. If he pitches poorly down the stretch and Verlander gets the Tigers into the playoffs by pitching as well as he did against Boston last week, I could see Verlander winning it. But Greinke was otherworldly at the beginning of the season, which to me gives him the inside track despite his team being terrible.

Halladay is always a candidate, as are Beckett and CC. I think the order will be Greinke, Verlander, Beckett, CC and Halladay once all is said and done.

  53. Joe I August 19th, 2009 at 12:20 pm

“he hasn’t pitched as well since the injury,”

Actually, Halladay hasn’t pitched as well against the Yankees, take a closer look at what he’s done overall.

6 IP 2 ER vs TB
7 IP 5 ER at Yanks
7 IP 3 ER at TB
9 IP 1 ER vs Bos
9 IP 1 ER vs TB
7 IP 3 ER at Sea
9 IP 4 ER vs Yanks
8 IP 2 ER vs Bal
8 IP 1 ER at TB.

  54. espresso August 19th, 2009 at 12:22 pm

The CY Young candidates should be Greinke, Halladay and King Felix if they finish as they have been. I would look for Hernandez to get over looked. I think Beckett should be in the running, but he didn’t get it in 2007 when he and C.C. had remarkably similar numbers and Beckett had one more win. C.C. was a horse though.

Dont forget about Mo … yet another brilliant season he has put together and once again, nary a consideration for Cy Young.

It amazes me considering the fact that he puts one incredible season togeter after another and is afterthought when it comes to the Cy Young – except of course in 2005 when he was hosed out of it in favor of Bartolo Colon.

Relievers like Mark Davis and Steve Bedrosian and Willie Hernandez can win Cy Young awards, but not the greatest closer in the history of the game.

It’s tough for mo. I don’t know what Fuentes’ ERA is or how many BS he has. But he just tied mo for most saves @ 35 last night.

So, it you say mo, you certainly have to look at Fuentes. And I don’t hear any clamoring for him.

Closers don’t belong in the CY Young imo. I know it’s not as prestigious but there is a closer of the year award, which whould be called the Rivera as soon as he retires.

  59. charlestonchew August 19th, 2009 at 12:29 pm

Halladay should have won the Cy Young the last 3 years and he should win it this year.

It’s ridiculous that he doesn’t win it every season. He’s almost always the best and he’s always in the AL East.

  60. espresso August 19th, 2009 at 12:30 pm

Actually if C.C.’s numbers keep getting better he should be in the discussion. He still has similar numbers to Beckett despite the “disappointing” season. He has the same win total, he has the same WHIP and the same BAA. Beckett is getting more stikeouts and groundouts, but C.C. is going deep into games and racking up innings, which is the point of pitching to contact. If the Yankees give him leads he looks more than willing to do that too. I would bet on Greinke if he keeps it up though.

  61. Robbykid August 19th, 2009 at 12:31 pm

I think Mo would be a better candidate for MVP then the CY Young. Where would the Yanks be if we did not have MO……THe only thing is that he is going to split votes between Jeter and Tex…..

    Fran,

LoL. That’s true. The old tree falling in the forest conundrum.
    —————————————

Verducci has a point, why retaliate if your batter hangs on the plate?

SI’s Tom Verducci joined the show to discuss big topics around baseball …

    – Verducci said that he doesn’t expect the National to pitch Stephen Strasburg this season. He thinks the San Diego State phenom will pitch somewhere, but not the big leagues.

    – Verducci says that the mystery of Strasburg may be more effective selling tickets than if the kid actually pitches.

    – Verducci said the track record for pitchers is much more dangeorus than positional players. Can’t miss position players usually pan out. Pitchers are always in danger of getting hurt or flaming out.

    – Verducci said the old helmets were only totally safe against a 70 mph pitch. They need to use the new helmets, even though players think they’re ugly.

    – Verducci is upset by the macho code in MLB. He thinks this idea that you have to retaliate for a hit batter or something. “It’s gotten to the point where there is no end game,” Verducci said. Verducci said that now hitters are close to the plate and get hit by accident. And the team still thinks it has to retaliate.

Verducci says that MLB hasn’t laid down the law on players and managers for this. Verducci says that managers should be penalized for dangerous rhetoric. And pitchers get suspended, but barely miss any time.

  65. Jon Ringland August 19th, 2009 at 12:40 pm

What are Verducci’s solutions to bringing peace to the middle east?

  66. m August 19th, 2009 at 12:41 pm

You know how moyer was upset about being supplanted in the rotation by pedro?

Last night Pedro went 4 innings, and guess who came out to relieve him? Yup, moyer. Who went 5 innings to earn the win, giving moyer the most wins on the Philly staff.

    O Henry!

  67. disco stu August 19th, 2009 at 12:43 pm

So, it you say mo, you certainly have to look at Fuentes. And I don’t hear any clamoring for him.”

My general point is that Mo has been passed over for Cy Young mutliple times in the past during seasons where he was dominant. Whether people want to argue whether or not closers should be considered for Cy Young is irrelevant … they are considered and some have won the award … so it is not as if Mariano Rivera winning a Cy Young award would be unprecedented simply because he is a closer.

For the record, the only thing that Fuentes can tout being up to par with Mo this year is that they are tied in saves (35). Mo is 1-2, 1.94 ERA (1 blown save) and Fuentes is 1-3, 4.10 (5 blown saves) … if these two were running 1-2 for Cy Young I think it is pretty obvious who would get it based on the years they are having.

  68. Scorpio August 19th, 2009 at 12:45 pm

Oh I see, so bobblehead nights are reserved for rejects and/or bit players…makes sense now. LOL.

  69. m August 19th, 2009 at 12:47 pm

    Jon Ringland,

They teased it, but the answer’s buried in the audio clip. It’s on danpatrick.com.

    disco stu,

It’s cool, there is a big difference. But do you see how two guys can have completely different approaches and have the same result?

If you were to filter the stats. For starters you go by wins, then down to ERA, then down to K’s & IP. For closers, if the writers choose to give a serios look at them, # of saves, down to ERA, down to WHIP, etc.

  70. Tom in N.J. August 19th, 2009 at 12:48 pm

“I don’t know what Fuentes’ ERA is or how many BS he has. But he just tied mo for most saves @ 35 last night”

His ERA is 4.10. He come into a game with a 3 run lead, gives up a run, then gets the save.

  71. RS August 19th, 2009 at 1:13 pm

The Angels overrate the closer position more than any other team. For some reason, that team always plays close games (before it was because of great pitching and lousy offense; now it’s great offense and lousy pitching).

The other day, Fuentes came in to get one out and got a save. Last year Krod got many saves in that fashion, and he never once picked up a 4 out save. As we all know, Mo gets multiple out saves pretty often for a closer, and he rarely, if ever, gives up a run in save situations. So he is much more valuable than any of the closers the Angels have had, even though they manage to rack up a boatload of saves.
