ESPN on the switch-pitcher

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Aug 20, 2009 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

ph_519381ESPN did a piece on switch pitcher Pat Venditte.

Nobody seems to think Venditte is a prospect. But the numbers don’t lie: 58 innings, 49 hits, 77 strikeouts. He started the season with Charleston and was promoted to Tampa to get challenged.

He has been pretty solid in the Florida State League, throwing 27.1 innings and allowing 25 hits while striking out 37.

Venditte is 24, which is old for that level of competition. But he’s put himself in a position to get a chance.

ESPN did a piece on a NYY prospect. Oh, I may have to change my opinions regarding ESPN ;)

What would be the next step? Staten Island?

I would think a lot of people would take the ferry over to see him.

  3. Stultus Magnus August 20th, 2009 at 6:05 pm

Staten Island would be a step down as far as competition is concerned.

    He’s at High A now.

  4. vin August 20th, 2009 at 6:06 pm

“What would be the next step? Staten Island?”

I’m sure he’ll start next year in Trenton – AA. All he needs to succeed is to be a LOOGY/ROOGY. He’s got the lower arm angle from the left side, but has more of a conventional delivery from the right – which may not necessarily be a good thing long-term considering his lack of big-time velocity and stuff.

  5. Joe Monte August 20th, 2009 at 6:07 pm

The #’s don’t lie, let’s see how he can do in AA to start 2010 and he’s putting up respectable #’s, he’s got a good shot.

posted that a while ago, but my real question is – does this guy have the stuff to make it to the show? Or is he a prospective minor leaguer?

  12. Betsy August 20th, 2009 at 6:18 pm

I can’t believe all the praise the Sox got for signing Smoltz, Penny and Baldelli, particularly the first two. If the Yankees had signed a 40 year old coming off of surgery, who’d never pitched in the AL East, they’d have been roasted all over the airwaves as being desperate. Of course at the time the Sox signed Smoltz, they didn’t think he was going to have to be a key cog for them. They had Lester, Beckett, Dice K and Wakefield……not bad. The thing is, this year things have not broken perfectly for them and it turned out that Smoltz was not great depth (as the media portrayed it).

I’m not that familiar with Penny, but his signing was hailed as a stroke of genius, while the Yanks were absolutely killed for signing AJ. To be fair, most fans also hated the AJ deal – they thought he was a product of a contract year and that he was an underacheiving, injury prone pitcher. Obviously this is only year one of the contract, but AJ has been as healthy as a horse and he’s been a horse in the rotation. Where are the mediots now?

Has Baldelli even played much this year?

I agree with SJ – the Yankees have gotten serious contributions form their kids, but you never hear about it. Maybe it’s because they aren’t hot prospects – I mean, Pena and Cervelli are probably future utility/backup players. Still, they were key components in many of our wins and they will be a part of this team going forward.

The Sox are the underdogs – they have appeal to anyone who was ever picked on by the school bully (that would be the equivalent of the Yankees), so I wouldn’t anticipate the mediots changing their tune on them anytime soon.

it kind of seems unfair that switch hitters get the upper hand on a SWITCH PITCHER. the hitter should declare first.

  14. number18 August 20th, 2009 at 6:27 pm

he pitched for staten island last summer… i went out to see him and got a chance to meet him after the game. very nice guy, hope he makes it.

  15. Jonathan C. August 20th, 2009 at 6:31 pm

Not really. For a moment, think about it. How many times have you seen a manager go to his bench because the opposing team has a certain pitcher in the game? It’s all about matchups and if you know which side the pitcher is throwing from it allows the opposing team’s manager to counter with which hitter he wants facing him. Either way, I hope Venditte is successful, regardless of the rule.

  18. Mike August 20th, 2009 at 6:43 pm

How far is Jeter from leading the Yankees franchise in hits?

Also, I doubt Venditte will be successful at the ML level since he doesn’t have a great GB so good hitters should feast on his mistakes, but you might as well continue to move him up the ladder and see what he can do.

Gary Sheffield asked the Mets for a contract extension, the club rejected the oveture and now Sheffield has threatened to leave the team and head home, two sources told the Post.

As of 6:30 p.m., one of the sources said, Mets officials and Sheffield were in discussions on how to move forward. There was a possibility that the Mets could release Sheffield.

Sheffield had been part of the original lineup for Thursday night’s game against the Braves. But Jerry Manuel said that Sheffield had pulled himself to clear his head.

    Thanks for story Pete,
I too saw it and looked at his numbers and wondered why scouts were down on him.
It’s a great story and would be interesting to see it take place.
I loved the video of the batter switching 10x before giving up and looking horrible against him.
The 2x vendetti switch rule interesting too, does it hold in the majors now?

There is no way the Venditte rule should favor the hitter. I mean , give the guy some credit for switch pitching and make it the batter who has to declare first.

The Yankees might have done a better job of producing talent that has helped the major league roster in the 2006 draft vs the Red Sox so far:

    2006 Draft
    Round Overall Yankees
1 21  Ian Patrick Kennedy SP
    1 41  Joba Chamberlain SP
    3 104  Zachary T. Mcallister SP

I am going for the tie on 9/8. For no other reason than I will be there that night and I am a really selfish person.

The piece on ESPN said Venditte is a natural righty with low 90′s stuff from the right side and high 80′s from the left side. They said he has nothing spectacular from one side but the combination from both sides makes him effective.

A righty reliever and a lefty specialist all in one roster spot?

They scrizzewed the poor kid pitcher of the Jays over.

He threw the ball out of play for whatever reason, but because he didn’t throw it to the ump first, they awarded Jason Bay from 1st base, a 2 base throwing error, to 3rd with none out.

  61. Eagle August 20th, 2009 at 8:16 pm

And of course, they picked up Alex Gonzalez off waivers, who was hitting like .200 in Cincinatti and he is hitting .312 for Boston since acquiring him.

Our pitchers better be prepared, Boston’s offense is tearing it up lately. Bay is back, Lowell is hot, Gonzalez has been a huge upgrade at SS for them etc.

  62. Eric D. August 20th, 2009 at 8:18 pm

Don’t expect these below average teams like Toronto to help us out by beating Boston.

It will save you aggravation by doing so.

  63. Jim Pir-one August 20th, 2009 at 8:18 pm

Is this the same Alex Gonzalez that hit the GW home run off Jeff Weaver in 2003?

Wow, what an effort by Marco Scutaro. Too bad your pitchers made no effort in this series, including the RS whipping Boy Halladay.

  64. Betsy August 20th, 2009 at 8:20 pm

And yet they are still (if they win this) 6 games back…..I would say the Jays just folded, but they battled back against Beckett, so I can’t say that. The Sox are a better team than the Jays……….they also have an easy schedule in September (mostly at home). The Yankees not only have to not play badly, but they need to keep playing at this extremely high level……I’ll take 1 out of 3 in Fenway to have a 5 game lead, but making up 5 games is very doable……again, the Yankees have a much harder, grueling schedule than the Sox do.

  65. hey kelvin says August 20th, 2009 at 8:20 pm

What channel is this cake thing on??

  66. Betsy August 20th, 2009 at 8:21 pm

There’s no question the Sox hitting has found it’s groove again. I still don’t understand why some people assume the Yankees have this division in hand……..we play 3 games at Fenway and still have another 3 left later. I already mentioned the schedule. I think the Yankees will continue to play well, but if the Sox get red hot, they can easily make up a couple of games here and there and get right back into it.

Why cant we hope that bum teams beat them?

They certainly play their hardest against us, fouling off pitch after pitch.

I remember the Royals sweeping the Sox in Fenway a couple years ago, maybe 06

Listening to Frank Viola is sickening. He’s another RS latch on who lick them clean time after time.

Too bad Remy’s coming back tomorrow. He said he had a date in mind for a comeback, and of course he’s going to try to reverse luck. Here’s hoping his arrival in the booth turns them back into the average or just above average team they are.

The pressure is all on the Red Sox.

They have played better the last 10 games but they still haven’t gained a single game on the Yanks since the series in the Bronx.

    You people worry too much.

The Yanks aren’t worried about the Red Sox right now. They are at home with their families and going to rock concerts with teammates.

BTW, so much for that conspiracy theory that Lester is going to pitch against the Yanks on Friday.

  74. Jim Pir-one August 20th, 2009 at 8:25 pm

    Betsy -

Because a lot of the posters on here aren’t concerned with the Red Sox until they’re close and then they are concerned with the RS.

Their motto is why be concerned at a time when you have no need to be. They also must expect teams like the Jays or White Sox, or pitchers like Roy Halladay to actually perform against the RS.

  75. Jim Pir-one August 20th, 2009 at 8:28 pm

    Giuseppe -

    Are you okay?

My thought that they might hold back Lester to pitch against us on Friday, which I would think would be harmful to the Red Sox, is a conspiracy?

I think you need to check the definition of conspiracy, or get better hair products :)

  76. Betsy August 20th, 2009 at 8:28 pm

Kelvin, you’re welcome! I love that show – I don’t watch it all the time, but they’re all amazing.

It’s not that I think the Sox will necessarily catch the Yankees, GF but that they are really playing well now. If they make it in as the WC, which I expect they will, they’ve got Beckett, Lester and and momentum. Just the idea of the Sox doing well in October is …….well, it’s not pleasant.

  77. Betsy August 20th, 2009 at 8:30 pm

Jim, Halladay is human. I’d like to think other teams will beat the Red Sox, but I don’t resent them for not doing so. The Sox are one of the best teams in the game – I expect them to beat the drecks, just like the Yankees are expected to.

  78. Jim Pir-one August 20th, 2009 at 8:33 pm

    Betsy -

You’re right. I only resent those players who make no effort against them and make the effort against the NYY.

I was a little hard on Tomko the other day. He’s not a bad guy. I was angry at all the hard hit balls that we got no reward on.

There is one guy who readily comes to mind is the dishonorable lack of integrity Kurt Suzuki. Im glad we’re not facing the A’s again.

  79. RS August 20th, 2009 at 8:34 pm

“They are red hot. If they hang on, they are 7-3 in their last 10.”

So are the Yankees. Except the Yankees did it with a West Coast trip.

Basically, the Sox will be exactly where they were after the sweep (6.5 GB), except 10 games have been knocked off the schedule.

  80. Giuseppe Franco August 20th, 2009 at 8:34 pm

    Jim Pir-one,

Everything to you is a conspiracy from Bloomberg to everything related to Boston.

The schedule had already been announced that Lester was pitching tonight and Penny was pitching Friday.

What purpose does it serve Francona to switch them at the last minute? Girardi finagled his rotation to have Pettitte pitch on Friday and didn’t have to go into stealth mode to do it.

Your mind is warped. I’m just glad you don’t live in my neighborhood.

  81. hey kelvin says August 20th, 2009 at 8:36 pm

I dunno about you guys but when I see the Yankees play I see guys that are hungry for a world series.

Heck I can even picture the Yankees vs Cardinals/Phillies in World Series.

  82. Mark August 20th, 2009 at 8:36 pm

Well, the Yankees shouldn’t need help from other teams. They should take care of business themselves this weekend and continue to play well.

We have a pretty tough stretch upcoming– 9 in a row against Boston, Texas, Chicago.

  83. Giuseppe Franco August 20th, 2009 at 8:37 pm

    Pick on another player.

Kurt’s a winner alright, against the NYY!

  91. Sey August 20th, 2009 at 8:42 pm

The thing is, we need to keep the lead 5-6 games or so.

Because our late September stretch is brutal while the Sox have a cakewalk.

12 of our final 15 games are against teams currently over .500 (including a brutal trip out west to play the Angels).

14 of Boston’s last 17 are against teams under .500 (the only tough ones are 3 games against us at the stadium).

Last thing we want to do is see this lead dwindle and then have to fight hard late in September against a tough schedule while Boston gets to beat up on bad teams for the right to win the division.

  92. m August 20th, 2009 at 8:42 pm

  97. Jim Pir-one August 20th, 2009 at 8:45 pm

Halladay and Rios actually have respectable numbers against the RS.

Millar, clearly doesnt care to try versus his ole ballclub, and probably fails on purpose. He’s still probably cowboying up in the locker room. And the fact that he was the biggest user the RS had back then.

It’s funny… did some of you really think we were going to push this lead to 9-10 games and make Boston disappear?

They are an excellent team that just went through a funk after the ASB. They are still the 3rd best team in the AL and have a pretty easy September schedule. Their bats have started to heat up and Buchholz has somewhat stabilized the middle of the rotation. Wakefield should be back in a week or so too.

This race is going to go deep into September. Boston isin’t going to fold. We control our own destiny though and as long as we keep winning, it doesn’t matter what Boston does. But it’s funny to see people so up in arms that a good team like Boston is starting to play well… as if they were going to play .400 ball the rest of the season.

  109. Jim Pir-one August 20th, 2009 at 8:52 pm

I saw this kid pitch when he was on the Staten Island Yankees last summer. The team stayed at my college(Wagner) while I was taking summer classes and I was talking to them about him. Besides being told he was a freak of nature, they all basically said that he has potential but he is a long shot to make the majors, and if he does it would most likely be as a September call-up or spring training invite.

The team still has to prove it can win in Fenway. If this is a “different team”, then they won’t get swept. They’ll find a way to win atleast 1 game especially with these matchups. 2 heavily in our favor and one toss up.

If we get swept, the lead is down to 3 measly games with almost 50 to go.

So he had another date in mind for a comeback, this series. His first date was probably the last Yankees Red Sox series.

Coke has pitched well in Boston in limited duty.

Don’t folks here believe in their hearts of hearts that the 2009 Yankees are the best team in the American League right now? What else do they have to do to prove it? Win the most games of any team in baseball history over the first 30 games after the All Star break? Oh wait..they did that. Maybe have a 9 – 1 homestand followed by a 5-2 West Coast trip? Oh wait…they did that too.

It’s the Boston Red Sox that have their back to the wall, not the Yankees. Since July 20 Boston is 4 – 12 against teams with winning records. They have the best team in the majors coming to town this weekend and their starters for the first 2 games are Penney and Tazawa. Relax and appreciate the fact that this is the best Yankee team in at least 5 years.

The one big plus for the Red Sox tonight is that Lester is through 7 innings at 89 pitches.

So the off day probably won’t give us any edge in terms of a rested pen. Unless Lester has major issues the most the Sox will need tonight is one inning out of their pen.

Not a big deal, but a best case scenario for them going into the weekend.

First time poster here. I know this probably isn’t necessary, but I feel the need to defend someone who is, by all accounts I’ve seen, a decent human being and ball player.

Kurt Suzuki vs KC – 1.061 OPS
Kurt Suzuki vs Colorado – 1.077 OPS
Kurt Suzuki vs Texas – .986

    Definitely tries against those guys

Kurt Suzuki vs LAA – .428
Kurt Suzuki vs Tor – .549
Kurt Suzuki vs Bal – .668

Look at that! Against two division rivals of the Yanks and one of the biggest non-division thorns in their sides, he might as well not bother showing up! Total D-bag. And clearly a Yankee hater.

Kurt Suzuki vs Boston – .760
Kurt Suzuki Overall OPS – .725

Wait, does that technically mean he tries a little bit harder than normal against Boston? I’m confused.

In seriousness, Suzuki is what he is: An average (at best) hitting catcher. Like a lot hitters of his profile (or any profile, really. Baseball is a funny game like that), he performs well versus some teams and poorly versus others. Trying to gauge whether or not he is trying based on his performance against each seems unfair.

Heck, Jeter has absolutely spit the bit versus Boston this year (.611 OPS). Does that mean he lacks the integrity to try against his teams chief rival? Or is he just a victim of the intensity of the random variation of results in the game of baseball?

(And just for the record, Suzuki had an .714 OPS vs the NYY in 2008 against a .888 OPS vs the Red Sox)

I see that according to the idiotic rantings of Jim-Bob-Billy-Jack that the Yankee players lacked integrity when they played the first 8 games of the year against Boston and lost. I’m sure they will be thoroughly embarrassed about being outed like this.

Newsdays beat writer, Eric Boland raises an interesting point:

Less than 2 weeks ago, the question was can the Yankees beat the Sox, now the question is can they put them away?

Alot can happen in 2 weeks.

    Betsy-

This is a direct quote from the liner notes of Bryan Adams’ Anthology CD-

Adams stresses, “Summer of 69 has nothing to do with the year 1968. Instead, he calls it “a double entendre, its about s-x much like Bob Seger’s “Night Moves’” (which is another amazing song in Erica’s opinion)

So you see Betsy, I am not lying from you. That is directly from the mouth of Bryan Adams

I hestiate to say the Jays laid down for the Sox when they came back on Beckett yesterday. Still, they didn’t exactly cover themselves in glory the last couple of days. Their pitching, Doc included, has been horrendous. Fortunately, the Sox will be going up against better pitching in the Yankees…….but they are hot right now, they are home and that definitely makes me nervous. The Yankees need to score runs this series and break out of this “funk”. A-Rod needs to snap out of it.

The Boston offense isin’t the same one we saw 2 weeks ago, they are swinging the bats MUCH better now. So we can’t expect our pitcher’s to throw shutouts like they did in the last series.

Pitcher’s like Penny usually give them trouble. Hard throwers who can locate. A-Rod can’t catch up to a FB like that now.

Curry is wrong – the Yanks have a 6, not 7, game lead over the Sox.

Also, I’ve never cottoned to the idea that pitcher A is going against pitcher B. He’s not – he’s going against the other team’s lineup. On any given day, anything can happen…….

  265. Joe August 20th, 2009 at 10:11 pm

Most Sox fans are not even thinking about the division. They are just trying to get a playoff spot and if they happen to shave games off our lead and contend for the division later in year, that is a bonus.

They cheer more for a Rangers and Rays loss than a Yankees loss. It helps them more. Kind of like us in 2007 when we knew the division was not realistic but we needed to hold off Seattle/Detroit for the WC.

  266. Betsy August 20th, 2009 at 10:12 pm

Pour some sugar on me…Def Leppard…one of my favorite bands, actually.

  269. Bronx Jeers August 20th, 2009 at 10:13 pm

I heard Creed’s setlist actually contains a “cleaned up ” version of “Summer of 69″

Instead of summer fun and sex, Scott Strapp changed the lyrics to better reflect his vision of our Lord’s formative years.

He calls it “Summer in Palestine”

Well thank goodness, Santa and the Easter Bunny where already knocked out of the running. :D I feel bad about the Brian Adams Tooth Fairy bomb.

That thought is exactly what I love most about baseball. You couldn’t predict a game if you tried.

Great players can come up empty. And ordinary players can become heroes.

    Absolutely anything can happen.

Game 7 of the 2003 ALCS in the middle of the 11th, I went to go get a drink of water. Aaron Boone was coming to bat and I figured I had some time. Who ever would have though the first pitch of the inning would be the game winner?

We wanted the Tigers/Indians in 06 and 07 and look how that turned out.

I met this guy last year at Staten Island. He is a cool guy, and I am certainly rooting for him to succeed. I think he has a chance to work his way up to AAA if he keeps putting up solid numbers like he has been. From there, I would be surprised if he is ever a full time MLB pitcher, but I believe its possible he will have a cup of coffee with the Yankees or another major league team.

Per league, the three division leaders are seeded 1-2-3 based upon their season records. Tiebreaker methods exist if necessary. The wildcard is seeded #4 regardless of record.

Pairings for the Division Series round are 1-4 and 2-3, with one exception. If the wildcard is from the same division as the #1 seed, the pairings are 1-3 and 2-4.

  377. Darrin August 20th, 2009 at 11:17 pm

    Nick – sorry, I didn’t read upthread. ;)

  378. Betsy August 20th, 2009 at 11:17 pm

BD, I’m just not that high on him. He was good, very good, whatever……not great. I remember him blowing plenty of games, especially on the Mets.

  379. Darrin August 20th, 2009 at 11:19 pm

Like BD says, all things being equal, the #1 and #2 seeds cannot play until the ALCS. And it’s looking an awful lot like the Yankees and Angels being #1 and #2 this season.

And that’s fine by me. I think the Angels are an awful matchup for the Yanks in a 3 out of 5. I think we have a better chance in a 4 out of 7 against them because our pitching is deeper.

  380. Mike August 20th, 2009 at 11:21 pm

If we are the WC, we would play the Angels.

We wouldn’t play the Angels because they have the best record or 2nd best record. We would be paired with the team who has the 3rd or 4th best record. That would come from the Central.

If TEX wins the WC, that is who we play regardless of any other records. Assuming BOS wins the WC, we play the Central winner because they will have the worst record among AL playoff teams.

  381. Betsy August 20th, 2009 at 11:21 pm

Ok, so if the Yankees have the best record, followed by the Angels, Tigers (or White Sox) and Sox (IMO, they are going to win the WC)……..the Yanks play the Tigers and the Sox play the Angels.

If the Angels have the best record, then the Yankees play the Tigers (or the White Sox) ……..The only way the Yankees play the Angels is if we blow the division lead and end up with the WC?

    Thanks!

    ———-

    Betsy,

he was probably one of the top 5-6 closers in baseball for a while (8-10 seasons).

I certainly can’t say he’ll be any good now. But that doesn’t take away from how well he did in his career.

He’s only been on the Mets for 3 seasons in his 13 year career. In those 3 seasons, he has averaged about a 2.40 ERA and about 10k/9ip. he did blow more saves for the Mets, on average, than the rest of his career. But he was still great for the Mets and like I said, he played 3 out of 13 seasons for them.

  383. Tank August 20th, 2009 at 11:23 pm

The team with the best record in the league always draws the wild card, regardless of their record. The only exception is if the wild card comes from the same division (like it likely will in this case with Boston).

In that case, we play the team with the worst remaining record. That would be Detroit/Chicago.

  384. Betsy August 20th, 2009 at 11:23 pm

BD, that being said…….IF he’s healthy, I’m sure Wagner will help someone. I just wouldn’t take one inning to mean much of anything.

Thanks, L to the 2nd, Darrin and Mike and BD!

  385. Darrin August 20th, 2009 at 11:24 pm

  388. Giuseppe Franco August 20th, 2009 at 11:25 pm

BD is exactly right. Wagner was an elite closer for many years.

He’s not Mo but nobody is. That’s why a handful of blown saves over the course of a season seems like a lot.

It’s not a lot for anybody not named Mo.

  389. BD 2.0 August 20th, 2009 at 11:25 pm

    Betsy,

    I cant argue with that.

I’d love it if the Yanks could get him super cheap… but they don’t need him and someone else who does need him would probably give up more to get him.

Who knows if he can stay healthy, or throw in back to back games…

  390. Tom in N.J. August 20th, 2009 at 11:26 pm

Darrin, true………guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

  392. BD 2.0 August 20th, 2009 at 11:29 pm

Yanks can’t worry about who they might play in the playoffs. They are the best team in the league if they’re playing their game.

I sort of wish the Divisional Series was 7 games, though.

A player like Justin Verlander can almost single-handedly win a series in a 5 game set (if he dominates in his 2 games).

Of course, CC Sabathia or AJ could do the same.

But in a 5 game series, there is a greater chance of an upset.

  393. Betsy August 20th, 2009 at 11:30 pm

BD, the Mets would never, ever deal with the Yankees…….it’s happened before, but very rarely. Given what’s happened to the Mets this year, I think fans would ride Omar and the Wilpons out of town on a rail if they dealt Wagner to the Yankees.

GF, you’re right…..I guess I’m spoiled with Mo and didn’t even realize it. Wagner was with the Astros for most of his career, right?

  394. Homer August 20th, 2009 at 11:30 pm

Wagner has a 2.40 career ERA and 385 saves

In his career, he has only had one season in which his ERA was over 3 (an injury shortened season in 2000).

He has had a very impressive career and still has it. He was hitting 96 tonight. McCaan couldn’t touch that slider either.

  395. Darrin August 20th, 2009 at 11:31 pm

So…anyone got a feel on how this weekend series is gonna go?

Boston has played well this week, and they have to be thinking sweep as their only chance for the division. But, wow — I can’t imagine the Yankees going 0-9 in Fenway this season.

I’m not making any predictions, but over the years I’ve often noticed that the team “desperate to sweep” usually doesn’t do it.

  396. Betsy August 20th, 2009 at 11:31 pm

BD, I agree – the 5 game format is ridiculous.

  397. BD 2.0 August 20th, 2009 at 11:33 pm

    Betsy,

You’re prob right, especially if there is a market for Wagner.

The Yanks would have to overpay to pull that trade off, and since their pen is just fine the way it is, it’s not worth it.

  398. m August 20th, 2009 at 11:34 pm

Pardon? Do we even have room for Billy Wagner? Lots of guys would be good pickups, but there’s only so many spots. And no, I know that Mitre wouldn’t block a good player, but someone will have to go when GGBG comes back and someone else if Marte makes an appearance.

  399. Bronx Jeers August 20th, 2009 at 11:35 pm

How many years until we hear the first “Ich bin ein Berliner!” chants at Yankee Stadium?

  400. Mike August 20th, 2009 at 11:35 pm

    Exactly, BD.

Which is why I am very wary about playing the Tigers. Verlander is so good. Jackson and Porcello are no good as well. They have no pen, but they have the starting pitching to win any series.

The Angels probably have the worst rotation among playoff teams

  401. Nick in SF in Larkspur August 20th, 2009 at 11:36 pm

Never thought this would be possible, but the Dodgers are at risk of losing the lead in the NL West.

They’d still have a 5 game lead in the wildcard, but it looked like they would run away with the division BEFORE they got Manny back.

Manny has done fine, but they’re playing worse.

    bad karma?

  403. m August 20th, 2009 at 11:37 pm

    Darren,

The matchups favor us, but that doesn’t mean much.

The Yankees offense has been on vacation for a while now, but we’ve still managed to scratch out some wins.

As long as we take all 3, I’ll be satisfied. :)

  404. RalphieD (OPPC) August 20th, 2009 at 11:37 pm

  405. BD 2.0 August 20th, 2009 at 11:38 pm

    m,

they might be able to move Mitre down for a bit and then bring him back up when the rosters expand in September.

The 5 games series should go the way of the dodo bird.

It’s preposterous to play a 6 months/162 game season only to be ousted from the playoffs because someone like Kenny Rogers catches fire for a day. Granted the Tigers may still have beaten the Yankees in ’06, but I despise the 5 game format. Once Moose blew game 2 to tie the series 1-1, it totally changed the way the Yankees played. All of a sudden, game 3 in Detroit was almost do-or-die.

I’ve heard this mentioned before, but a 3 out of 5 is a terrible burden for the home team. You MUST sweep the first two games at home or else you are immediately under the gun of being knocked out.

    BD,

True. Guess I’m not too excited about Billy Wagner because he looked bad before going down. Like stinky bad that left a bad impression.

Surely, another contender would be willing to trade for him. Even Smoltzie found a home. Speaking of, he had some interesting things to say on the DP show.

John Smoltz joined the show to discuss what happened with the Red Sox and signing with the Cardinals. Here are some highlights from his interview …

–Smoltz said he understands why Boston didn’t want to keep him. Smoltz said that he needed a rest.

“I couldn’t go out there every five days … not in that atmosphere,” Smoltz said.

    – Smoltz said one problem in Boston was he didn’t have time to make adjustments.

Smoltz said he’s been working out since he left Boston and he made a mechanical change he thinks will help.

    – Smoltz, however, still has confidence. “I wasn’t as far off as the results showed,” Smoltz said.

    – Smoltz thinks that the Cardinals can afford to be more patient and he thinks he can help in multiple roles — as a starter and out of the bullpen.

    – Smoltz said he didn’t know what was going on the last 11 days because he was at the mercy of the situation.

    – Smoltz said he’s been hesitant to call Dan, because he didn’t want everyone to know it was Dan’s pitching tips that caused all the problems in Boston.

  414. BD 2.0 August 20th, 2009 at 11:45 pm

    Eric D,

    no doubt.

things can change in this game rather quickly.

The Yanks aren’t going to coast into the playoffs with the best record unless they continue to bring it.

Obviously I’d rather them face Penny or Tazawa than Lester but anything can happen – especially at Fenway.

  415. Betsy August 20th, 2009 at 11:45 pm

Angel, the Manson murders fascinate me……….what a tragedy. Susan Atkins was not granted a compassionate discharge (she’s terminally ill)….for which I am glad. I understand that Leslie Van Houten and Patricia Krenwinkle have turned their lives around in prison, but IMO, none of the family members should ever be paroled. It’s a joke that Squeaky Fromme, who tried to assassinate a President, is out., Honestly? She’s psycho……..and very likely still a danger. What’s odd and scary is that there are musicians that worship Manson……

Nick – I hated the best of 5 even back in the Chambliss days. Once the first pitch is thrown at the beginning of a 5 game series, I already have an Excedrin headache.

m – Long, long ago I stopped paying attention to pitching matchups. They mean nothing when two good teams play. If someone looked in a crystal ball and saw the future and declared that the Yankees will lose to Penny and Tazawa and then beat Beckett on Sunday I wouldn’t be the least surprised.

  446. Bronx Jeers August 21st, 2009 at 1:23 am

    Hey Dennis, serious question.

What would you suggest a for a lonely soldier to do behind enemy lines for a few hours before the game on Sat. I mean besides hide in the bathroom until 1st pitch.

I’ve never even been to Boston.

  447. Erick August 21st, 2009 at 1:25 am

i certainly hope the yankees are keepin vendette a secret – the switch pitching thing might take off – hopefully that is something the yanks value (lefty vs. lefty, righty vs righty)

  448. m August 21st, 2009 at 1:27 am

    dennis,

lol. Couldn’t believe we’re in week 2 of the preseason. Had the game on in the background, but missed Ochocinco pull a Swisher with the made PAT.

  449. Nick in SF in Larkspur August 21st, 2009 at 1:30 am

Bronx Jeers: I’m sure dennis will have safe and friendly suggestions for you. If it was me in your shoes, I think I would want to dine on lobster just in case it was my last meal.

Anthony’s is a good place, but probably very touristy; I was a tourist there and fit right in. Probably many better/cheaper/more authentic options.

Please try to post to the board during the game (if you have a proper mobile device), just so we know you’re ok.

  450. Nick in SF in Larkspur August 21st, 2009 at 1:36 am

m, you confuse me greatly! I thought you didn’t want to acknowledge the NFL until gameday!

dennis: it’s become fashionable here to not only write off the Sox completely but to laugh along the way. I’m totally on board with the laughing, but not completely with the writing off. I’m also not on board with the sometime-browbeating of anything who thinkgs that the Sox might still have a pulse, but that’s neither here nor there.

From the point of view of the Sox fan, it’s hard to imagine a scenario for 2004 sweeter than what actually happened… I would not want a reverse scenario in 2009, but another ALCS showdown would be epic and I like epic matchups.

But I would be quite happy with the thought of Youk making early-October tee times while the Yanks settle in for a long march to the Canyon of Heroes.

Best of luck to you. Not your team. Just you.

  451. dennis-Costanza August 21st, 2009 at 1:36 am

    Bronx Jeers.

No need to hide. The good vs evil on both sides is way over blown.

I would suggest the Cask and Flagon, Boston Beer Works, but my fav is Dillons on Boylson about 10 mins from the park.

Really good karma spot without the idiots.

I hope you have a great trip.

    Nick,

I’ve confounded you? Then I’ve done my job and done it well!

Venditte doesn’t have particularly good “stuff” from either side. But he throws breaking pitches for strikes to go along with his decent fastball.
As a RH or LH pitcher, Venditte would just be another guy. But a SwP hasn’t ever happened before (yeah, yeah…greg harris, blah blah blah. he switched once. Venditte does it every time he pitches.)
Big numbers in the low minors, especially from older players, don’t mean much in terms of ML potential. Most young players in A ball are poorly disciplined at the plate and swing at pitches out of the strike zone. Great A-ball numbers may mean a pitcher’s been great, or just that he’s been great because he’s faced a lot of lousy hitters.
Venditte’s good numbers are intriguing. I don’t know what they mean. He touches 90 with the fastball from the RH side, but doesn’t from the LH side. He’s got a couple of breaking/off speed pitches. His “stuff” isn’t that good. But there have been many other pitchers in ML history who had stuff like Venditte’s from one side or the other. Trevor Hoffman has been getting guys out with an 89 mph fastball for more than a few years now. You never know…

  455. Nick in SF in Larkspur August 21st, 2009 at 1:45 am

Confounded might be a little strong. I’m sticking with confused.

  456. dennis-Costanza August 21st, 2009 at 1:45 am

    Nick.

ALCS of yes and yup would be great. Isn’t that why we tune in?

As always, I hope you are well.

    Silver- 13.89

    Still time until the parade.

  457. Nick in SF in Larkspur August 21st, 2009 at 1:51 am

Silver, feh. I could have won and lost fortunes on it just since we first started talking about it. If I had fortunes to win or lose. It’s the stuff of madmen.

“If NYY picked up Wagner I’m sure the Sandman deal can be worked out (um, that’s Mo’s song, find a new one, Billy boy)”

Isn’t Marte suppose to return tonight?

  459. Nick in SF in Larkspur August 21st, 2009 at 1:55 am

    Marte….Fenway….

Ugh, how am I supposed to sleep tonight???

  460. Bronx Jeers August 21st, 2009 at 1:56 am

    Nick and Dennis

Thanks for the tips. I certainly don’t want to end up at “Cheers” I’ll see what I can dig up online.

As I’ll be a true “foot” soldier I doubt I’ll be venturing very far off the path from where the bus drops me off (Back Bay Station) to park. Maybe a quick subway ride downtown to catch a sight or two.

  461. m August 21st, 2009 at 1:57 am

    Wagner v. Damaso?

    Talk about a lose-lose proposition. :(

  462. Bronx Jeers August 21st, 2009 at 1:58 am

….the bus drops me off (Back Bay Station) to THE park.

I’m not driving the bus. At least I don’t think I am?

  463. dennis-Costanza August 21st, 2009 at 2:00 am

    Bronx Jeers.

Dillons is very, very close to the Back Bay Station.

You will be treated well at any place you go.

he’d just be to there to give Cokey some rest.

  465. Nick in SF in Larkspur August 21st, 2009 at 2:09 am

By give Cokey some rest I hope you mean bring him hot chocolate and cookies. No pitching!

  466. Bronx Jeers August 21st, 2009 at 2:25 am

Thanks again, I’m checking those places out now. Dillon’s could be the place.

I’m a big proponent of peace and civility at the Stadium in regards to out of town fans and agree that the whole “fear factor” is overblown.

Then again as the lead will either be 5.5 or 7.5 games on Sat, I certainly won’t be expecting hugs & handshakes.

Regardless, as a fan of baseball and old stadiums, I’m very much looking forward to seeing Fenway.

If who is Brian Bruney? can be trusted then Damaso Malo can sure as hell get some trust.

  468. Bronx Jeers August 21st, 2009 at 2:41 am

    Honestly,

If Damaso Marte pitches on Saturday?

Expect an “on-field” delay right after he comes in. That’ll be me charging the mound.

  469. m August 21st, 2009 at 3:12 am

Who is this Brian Bruney? hasn’t been dealing with shoulder issues for a year.

  470. Luds August 21st, 2009 at 8:23 am

It would be nice to see Venditte make it, let it be as a mid relief guy. I remember watching the Expos game where Harris did it and he had a huge drop in speed from one side, he could only throw a huge curve. The batter simply waited and got a walk.
