Chad Gaudin did his part and Mark Teixeira drove in three runs as the Yankees beat the Athletics to take yet another series.

Joba Chamberlain has six more starts this season. This notebook also has updates on A-Rod and Ian Kennedy.

Batting Derek Jeter leadoff ended up being one of the best ideas of the season.

Isn’t the Yankee lead 6 games in the loss column?

  2. D.D. August 20th, 2009 at 8:52 am

I enjoy reading your posts more than your paper articles.

The writing in your blog posts is more fluid.

    Just saying.

Tyler Kepler, on the other hand, writes great articles, alway fun to read.

    I did.

Just comparing today’s articles by Pete and Tyler on Jeter as the leadoff hitter. That’s all.

Pete, how come the Journal News isn’t distributed in NYC? You can get a Daily News or Post in the LoHud, but not a JN in NYC (unless it’s just my neighborhood). I’d like to be able to read the big Sunday edition of your paper. Thanks.

RMEL, there is no chance that Phil is in the pen next year or the year after that..lol, Pete is not breaking any new ground.

Sorry i added this to the old post

Betsy all due respect but lets see how the next 2 mounts work out and lets see how he handles himself this post season…but like i said a million times on here before who is your set up man next year….People are saying we are winning games because of our starters…which is on half true…The bullpen since Hughes has step into the 8th inning roles has been excellent…so next year we want our starters to throw 8 innings every time out..So once again if Mr Hughes helps this team deep in the Playoffs and his a starter next year who is your set up man that you feel as confident as yo feel in Hughes right now…Other thing we have a ton of Prospect…I feel confident that this off season if Cash see some premium starters become available he will make a move for the player (I.E. Doc, King Felix, Cain, Josh Johnson) players who have 2 or less remaining years on their contract…Then ask yourself this you want the Sox to get one of those guys…Everyone would complain but hey Hughes would a starter again…

I nominate Arod’s steroid scandal to be the best idea of the season. Hear me out – without it, Arod would still think he has to be “the man” and would probably end up competing with Tex’s HR prowess, popularity and team leadership. Tex has provided great cover for Arod this year, taking much of the run producing stress off of his shoulders and allowing him finally to fade into the woodwork of the team fabric – like Jeter has done all along.

  9. Evan NYC August 20th, 2009 at 9:19 am

    Hey Pete,

    Nice article on Jeter.

    Thanks for the blog!

  10. pat August 20th, 2009 at 9:19 am

I was just looking at the offensive stats since the Boston series and with the exception of Jeter, no one has been consistant and many have been pretty anemic.

This may be a stupid question….but…..what would be the factor that would cause someone to have an OBP lower than their BA?

  11. ditmars1929 August 20th, 2009 at 9:19 am

Interesting theory, Ghost. Not sure if I totally agree, but interesting nonetheless.

The way this season has been going, however, I’d be hard pressed to think of a “best idea” because the season has been so successful thus far.

I’m just going to sit back and enjoy this team, best one in years, and not over-analyze things. I’m so glad they’re back from the West. I hate those 10pm start times. Too bad there’s no game today!

  12. NYY626 August 20th, 2009 at 9:21 am

I enjoyed those articles Pete. I am off to Vegas for the weekend, but I’m hoping the Yanks kick some Boston booty while I’m away ( I will undoubtedly steal my friends iphone and check the score every 3 minutes). Hopefully Andy continues his awesomeness tomorrow! ( and I pray we actually score some runs for him this time…)

  13. Hokiehill August 20th, 2009 at 9:22 am

I certainly think ARod’s time in Colorado was a big help to him mentally. Going through the whole steroid scandal and having the time to reflect on where and how things went wrong seem to have given him the perspective he needs to be comfortable in his own skin. He seems to be really comfortable with the team as a whole this year.

3 UP: MVP VOTING, PEDRO AND SMOLTZ

    1. I learned yesterday that I have been put on the committee that will vote for the AL MVP award. I recognize that simply writing that sentence will cause me a bunch of annoyances now. There is already a lot of debate (nastiness) in the air about this award as people see that Joe Mauer is en route to an historic campaign, but very likely will be spending September toiling for a team out of contention.

I know that the annoyances are coming for two reasons: 1) I am sure I will be lobbied now by people pushing their favorites. 2) I already was bombarded by e-mails the other day when I wrote about the potential MVP showdown between Mauer and Mark Teixeira. In that blog item I never championed one player over the other, but because I questioned the validity of relying solely on statistics many e-mailers with interesting vocabularies projected what they wanted to project on my commentary.

I will state again that there are roughly six weeks remaining and that six weeks are a long time to change perceptions. Just remember that Mauer did not play the entire month of April and Teixeira was a dud for most of April, and yet we see both now as top contenders for this award. For those challenged by the calendar, September is as long as April, and we have not yet reached September.

Say Kevin Youkilis or Carl Crawford or Michael Young has a gigantic September to put his team into the playoffs while Mauer, Teixeira and Derek Jeter collapse. In other words, there are a bunch of scenarios that can still play out in games that should be loaded with meaning. We can play that fun game of who is the MVP now. But the note I received said my vote is due immediately after the regular season, not on Aug. 20.

So last night I went to sleep around 11:30. I turned off the TV when Gaudin left the game with one out and the bases loaded.

I had a dream last night that the Yankees lost 10-7 in 14 innings.

Is it normal that since I did not know how the game ended, my subconscious made it up for me??? I am very glad my subconscious was wrong though

Good point Ghost. I think A-rod has matured quite a bit. IMO he wanted to be the face of a franchise, and that spot is already taken by Jeter (and may well be handed down to Tex). I think the steroid issue has humbled him and made him a better team mate. I was never much of an A-rod fan, but have changed my opinion this year. I am disappointed he took PEDs, but he has accepted the consequences and tried to move on.

  19. 86w183 August 20th, 2009 at 9:30 am

Erica I’m sure you were just ahead of your time. One day the Yanks will lose 10-7 in 14 innings and you will have documented proof that you “saw it coming” years ago.

  20. pat August 20th, 2009 at 9:31 am

    Ghost

IMO, Alex’s hip injury is more responsible for him not trying to be “the man” but I think the steroid scandal was helpful(?) in giving the new guys a chance to settle in without the focus being on them so much.

You’re not the only one!

I fell asleep in my chair last night and woke up with Phil Hughes on the mound, 3-2 score. I decided to go to bed and shut off the t.v. Just too darn tired to watch to the end, even though the end was at hand. :)

Anyway, I woke up this morning thinking Mo had blown a save and the Yankees probably losing 4-3.

It’s not healthy. It’s just not a good thing that the first thing I think about is whether the Yankees won or lost the night before. (And you’d at least think I’d have them winning!) Thank heavens this west coast trip is over and done with. When do they do this again?

I am not going to treat myself to the potential suicides that had to be here, but if anyone tells me that it wasn’t so bad, I will be surprisingly delighted.

I continue to have total faith in every player wearing the pinstripes until that players gives me total reason to feel otherwise. Not a bad way to take a season. (It also goes a long way in helping one to accept Yankee losses as part of life and individual screw-ups as part of being human…)

Where are all the stat people this morning?

How someone could have an OBP lower than BA is bugging me. There’s got to be a simple explanation I’m missing.

  27. NYYROC August 20th, 2009 at 9:43 am

Pat, you can’t have a lower OBP than BA. OBP= hits + BB+HBP/ total ABs. example: 4 hits in 10 ABs also 2 BBs and 1 HBP. So 4+2+1=7/13=.540 OBP.

  28. 86w183 August 20th, 2009 at 9:43 am

Gaudin could be a well above average # 5 if he would throw strikes more consistently with his fast ball. It seems he just wanted to show it last night and get people out on sliders and changeups.

My biggest concern with him if pitching in smaller parks. He’s also been a little better out of the pen over his career. Still, at age 26 he could still get better and could be a very useful piece going forward.

  29. Jerkface August 20th, 2009 at 9:44 am

Sac Flies don’t count against your average but they count against your onbase percentage.

So yuo can have a lower OBP than your average if you never walked and hit a lot of Sacs

  30. Jerkface August 20th, 2009 at 9:45 am

But watch out for adrian when you’re hitting those Sacs.

  31. Noreaster August 20th, 2009 at 9:48 am

I am so done with West Coast trips…too tired this morning. Joe is doing a great job setting up the team for the end of the year. Getting Gaudin seems like a great pickup. Cashman has really added a lot of depth to the team in the past month.

  32. 86w183 August 20th, 2009 at 9:49 am

Yes you can have a lower OBP than BA.

10 plate appearances, three hits, three sacrifices, four outs.

    OBP .300, batting average .429

  33. pat August 20th, 2009 at 9:50 am

    Thank you jerkface.

He did have 1 sac and 0 walks. I knew there had to be a loophole I was missing.

  34. NYYROC August 20th, 2009 at 9:50 am

Next west coast trip is September 18th. I don’t mind the late games verses Seattle on the weekend. But then there are 10pm starts verses Anaheim on Monday and Tuesday (Wendesday is a 3:30 start thankfully). Start stockpiling your sleep now. With my best guestimate, the Yanks will clinch sometime around that week. So brace yourself!

  36. Noreaster August 20th, 2009 at 9:51 am

Looking forward at the Boston series we should really beat up on Penny. Winning game one would put all the pressure on their rookie to produce in game 2 vs AJ. I like those odds.

Boston will be coming in late from Toronto, we get a chance to rest today. Hopefully the bats will be back in Beantown.

  38. 86w183 August 20th, 2009 at 9:52 am

The OBP/BA things rarely comes into play because it’s pretty unusual for a player to have more sacrifices than walks.

Having a more balanced lineup with all players contributing equally is what made Alex stop “trying” to be the man.

In previous years, whether we liked Alex or not, you have to admit many people got frustrated with his failures in big spots because they knew if he didn’t do it, then it wouldn’t get done.

Fans would get mad at Alex for trying to be the man but lets be honest, we expected/ hoped he got an RBI maybe even a home run every time he went up there.

Many times 1-4 seemed like our best chances of getting something big done. Not to say that those spots in the lineup never contributed.

This year is a reminder for those of the revisionist history club (who forgot pitching is what made those dynasty years) that one player can’t lead a team to a championship (see 2007) when there is no pitching.

  48. Tom in N.J. August 20th, 2009 at 10:02 am

In 1982 pitcher Phil Niekro had a BA of .195 and an OBP of .193…

    http://www.baseball-reference......ph01.shtml

  49. NYYROC August 20th, 2009 at 10:03 am

86; Perhaps, as you say, it happens so seldom it is confusing. But I don’t believe the Sacs are counted in computing BA or OBP. In your example, I think the BA would be .429 (3/7) and the OBP would be the same. For the same reason a hitter isn’t penalized in BA for a Sac I don’t think he is penalized in OBP for one either.

  50. Doreen August 20th, 2009 at 10:03 am

Um, the Yankee lineup was never the problem. Except for perhaps last season, the offense was the reason they got to the post season. The relatively weak pitching was why they didn’t get far once they got there.

ARod always had enough protection, and never had to be “the man.” Now, whether he thought so or not, that’s another story. Plus, I’d argue, even in non-MVP years, Alex did well.

The problem is Alex is expected to come through EVERY time and no player is able to do that. So when he doesn’t come through 7 out of 10 times or thereabouts, there is disappointment. Amplified because he is Alex Rodriguez.

  51. betsy August 20th, 2009 at 10:04 am

RMEL, with all due respect, no – I don’t need to wait and see how these next two months play out and either do the Yankees. Phil is a potential ace and the fans will have to live with his growing pains…..as the Yankees are willing to do. He’s a starter…and he will remain a starter.

  52. NYYROC August 20th, 2009 at 10:04 am

  54. betsy August 20th, 2009 at 10:08 am

geez, Joe and Evan complaining that Everidge didn’t bunt last night instead of giving credit to Phil for getting out of that jam………guess they are feeling a bit annoyed about the Mets.

  55. BellaSakura August 20th, 2009 at 10:09 am

I agree about the lineup in general Doreen and of course the pitching. But you can analyze offense by more than just total runs scored. I’d say that Alex was no more a “stat padder” than the Yankees as a whole in previous years. As far as when the lineup couldn’t get something done the focus was always too focused on Alex.

“The problem is Alex is expected to come through EVERY time and no player is able to do that. So when he doesn’t come through 7 out of 10 times or thereabouts, there is disappointment. Amplified because he is Alex Rodriguez.”

Very true. 7 out 10 doesn’t apply to him.

    Doreen-

    Let me get this straight-

You are going to a wedding without a bar???? Isn’t the open bar half the point of going to weddings?!?!

I highly recommend DVR. It effectively enabled me to triple the amount of TV I watched. I even hooked it up myself

  57. pat August 20th, 2009 at 10:11 am

“I don’t think he is penalized in OBP for one either.”

    He is. OBP=(H + BB + HPB)/(At Bats + BB +HPB + Sacs)

    Posada had 34 PA, 33 AB, 6 H, 0 BB, 0 HBP, 1 SF and had a .182 BA and a .176 OBP

    The difference is the SF.

  60. Doreen August 20th, 2009 at 10:15 am

    BellaSakura -

I agree. Runs scored is not the be-all and end-all of an offense. So many times a 10-run game was followed up with a 2-run loss. Feast or famine. But, they feasted enough to get where they were going. :)

  61. NYYROC August 20th, 2009 at 10:15 am

Pat, Thanks for clarifying that. Still, it seems inconsistent in the way the two are calculated, because in a sense the BA is being lowered when you calculate OBP.

Odd, maybe. A bad thing? No :-)

  65. Jerkface August 20th, 2009 at 10:18 am

They are going with the theory of ‘win as much as possible’ and their chances of winning with lester vs a bad opponent are much greater than replacing him with brad penny and then pitching lester against the yankees. That move brings the cumulative winning % lower.

  66. SJ44 August 20th, 2009 at 10:21 am

    Betsy,

No. Their job right now is to win as many games as they can and secure the WC. If they get closer to the Yankees, you can mess around with the rotation and play matchups.

Lester vs. the Jays, especially with the Jays in give up mode right now, is as close to a layup win as the Sox can get for the rest of the season. When that comes up on the schedule, you take it.

When you are 7 games out, moving guys around to face the Yankees isn’t a recommended strategy.

I think Arod is reflective of the entire team this year. Unlike the last several years, this team doesn’t panic as much as the previous 4-5 Yankee teams.

Some of the fans panic more than ever but, the team doesn’t and that’s a good thing.

In past years, if they had a game or two, even a week, when they didn’t hit, the entire team would tighten up.

Last year, we saw this team panic very often in the middle of games. If they didn’t hit early, they didn’t hit late. That hasn’t been the case this season.

Yes, the pitching is much better. No question about that.

I would submit however, the overall attitude of the team, and how they handle themselves everyday, is much, much better than the last 4-5 Yankee teams.

Just a lot less angst around this group and I believe it translates to better, more consistent play.

The last wedding we went to was in August 19 of 2006. That was the double-header sweep of the Red Sox (the 5-game sweep, Boston Massacre part 2, I believe). That wedding was in a catering hall with a lounge (bar), so many people were coming and going to get updates. But that was also in Staten Island.

I don’t think there’ll be too many people clamoring to see the Yankees score at this wedding. :(

    Doreen-
The DVR is well worth it. I have mine set up to automatically record the post game show. I also set it to record the rest of the game for the W coast trips or other late games. I also save the post games from the rare times we get down to actually see a game.

  76. pat August 20th, 2009 at 10:38 am

Tex’s postgame made me smile more than his game winning HR the other night.

He said he went up looking to hit a HR. Says to me he wanted to get the winning hit and not just get on base.

If everyone embraces being “the man”, no one has to be.

  77. betsy August 20th, 2009 at 10:40 am

2 years……wow. I don’t know if Plaxico was given tougher treatment because he’s a celeb or if NYS gun laws are just that rough, but boy – his career is probably over because of one dumb night.

  78. Chris August 20th, 2009 at 10:41 am

That’s a stiff penalty for shooting yourself in the leg!!

  79. betsy August 20th, 2009 at 10:45 am

RMEL, we agree on one thing, lol – that we both hope the Yankees make it to and win the WS.

Erica, true, lol – but you never know what can happen. I never assume anything, even with a mediocre pitcher (not named Lester, Beckett or Bucholz) on the mound. We’ll see….I may have to go to 3 movies this week to avoid the games (just so I don’t give myself ulcers, lol). Hey, one more week until Phil comes to town..

Game winning catch in SB XLII, the world by the horns…

    What a dope.

  81. pat August 20th, 2009 at 10:46 am

    betsy

Celebrity hurt him in this case. He handed the mayor a soapbox and Bloomberg climbed right on it.

  82. Erica - always OPPC August 20th, 2009 at 10:47 am

    Betsy-

As my office manager always tells me at work… “deep breaths”. LOL

  83. MaineYankee August 20th, 2009 at 10:48 am

    Betsy

Isn’t it a bit premature to put Bucholz on the same level as Lester and Beckett?

  84. RMEL August 20th, 2009 at 10:50 am

RMEL, we agree on one thing, lol – that we both hope the Yankees make it to and win the WS.

haha…totally true…Too much negative on here…We all have opinions and we should respect them…hopefully i will be taking a day off from work the 1st week of Nov for that parade….haha

  85. betsy August 20th, 2009 at 10:52 am

SJ, true…….I guess the Jays have given up, though they battled hard against Beckett. I agree that tonight is a gimme for the Sox….LOL I hope teams just don’t lay down and die for the Sox over the next month….of course, I’d be fine if they did that for the Yankees, lol

YOu can’t compare this team to last year’s team – it’s night and day. I don’t know what the difference is – it’s the same offense except for Tex. Why are they getting it done this year and not the past couple of years? I still don’t understand how this team went into a deep freeze offensively in post-seasons and I never will. It’s not like we had a lousy lineup – we had Jeter, Damon, Alex, Posada. I mean, we had great/very good hitters, true professionals, guys who’d gotten it done in big spots before. They failed miserably for the past few years, though – why? It’s strange to me.

  86. ditmars1929 August 20th, 2009 at 10:52 am

Betsy, we in NY have extremely strict gun laws and sentencing guidelines. You can sometimes make a plea bargain to get a little time off as Plax did (circumstances are different for each case, but I’m assuming he got the deal because he only hurt himself) but in general, possession of an illegal firearm in NY is minimum three years regardless of who you are.

  87. Stateman52 August 20th, 2009 at 10:54 am

Two years is too much. It was a first offense and no one was hurt. Bloomberg was out to get Plax from the beginning.

  88. Patrick August 20th, 2009 at 10:56 am

Wow how incredible is it that Plax is sentenced to serve the same amount as Vick and more time than Donte Stallworth, Leonard Little, and Ray Lewis combined?

Plax had an unlicensed gun in a club and shot himself with it.

Vick ran an illegal gambling operation and was partially responsible for the vicious killing of several dogs.

Little and Stallworth drove drunk and killed people.

    Lewis murdered a guy.

How is driving drunk any different than having a pistol? Both situations are basically reckless use of a weapon.

Something is wrong with this legal system..

  89. Patrick August 20th, 2009 at 10:57 am

Bah sorry for rambling on about Plax, this isn’t the place for me to complain about the legal system. Sorry guys, that was pointless.

  90. ditmars1929 August 20th, 2009 at 11:03 am

Statesman and Patrick, I do agree with both of you.

I’m not a lawyer, but you have to understand that the laws being enforced are local in nature. NY has had it with illegal guns and the crime that comes with them, so we have stricter laws than other areas. Plax should’ve known. The other thing that needs to be taken into account is the “what if?” factor. Sure, Plax only hurt himself, but that’s just how it worked out. The potential for him to have hit and harmed someone else by carrying a gun must be considered.

Still though, for the life of me I don’t understand how you get drunk, kill someone, and serve less than a month. If I did that, I wouldn’t be able to post here for 20 years.

  91. ditmars1929 August 20th, 2009 at 11:05 am

Eh, it’s topical in terms of involving another local sports team. At least it’s sports as opposed to some people making me incredibly jealous by letting us know they are going to a wedding in San Diego, which is an awesome city.

But if this is annoying, my apologies too. Back to baseball. Can’t wait for this weekend’s series!

  92. Patrick August 20th, 2009 at 11:05 am

“Still though, for the life of me I don’t understand how you get drunk, kill someone, and serve less than a month. If I did that, I wouldn’t be able to post here for 20 years.”

Exactly… I wonder how long the guy that killed Nick Adenhart will be in jail for?

  93. 86w183 August 20th, 2009 at 11:07 am

You can always use comparative legal cases to make the system look ridiculous and sometimes it is. However Plax getting what he deserves is a good thing for the public as a whole. What happened with Donte Stallworth was just a disgrace, as was the Little case.

But they are not the first guys to purchase leniency. Plax and Vick just didn’t have any victims to pay off.

  94. Sports Geek August 20th, 2009 at 11:43 am

@pat- you asked “…..what would be the factor that would cause someone to have an OBP lower than their BA?”

I haven’t read all of the responses to your question, but I did not see any that were correct.

It does seem surprising at first blush that OBP could be lower that BA, but when you look at the details of the formulas, you see how it can happen.

BA is H / AB. AB (“At Bats”) does not include any of the following- BB, HBP, SF, SH, catcher’s interference.

    OBP is (H + BB + OBP) / (H + BB + OBP + SF)

So, if a batter has 0 BB’s and 0 HBP’s, and 1 SF (or more), then the calculated OBP would be lower than the BA.

NOTE- some of the responders said that a “sacrifice” would result in OBP being lower than BA. This is NOT true, because SH (a bunt sacrifice) is not part of the OBP calculation. Only a Sacrifice Fly (SF) is in the OBP calculation. The logic is that an SH was due to “management strategy”, and the batter’s stats should not be penalized for that, while in an SF the batter made an out.

  95. Sports Geek August 20th, 2009 at 11:57 am

I was looking at Jeter’s career Hits stats. As of last night’s game he has 2696 hits, and is ranked 60th overall. If he were to get 40 more hits this year (which he will do at the current rate), he will have 2736, which will move him to 50th overall- Wow!

In those next 40 hits, in addition to passing Lou Gehrig, he will also pass Goose Goslin, Tony Perez, Roberto Alomar, Rusty Staub, Bill Buckner, Dave Parker, Billy Williams, Doc Cramer, and Omar Vizquel.

  96. rover August 20th, 2009 at 2:00 pm

I’m a fan and supporter of Arod. I know and understand the nice things being said about his melding better this year. Just his being in the lineup seemed to start things off nicely. I know and understand we dont have all of the guy this year, Maybe only 80-85ish%. I wouldn’t mind though just for the resst of this year Alex being Alex if it could put him on a really hot hot end of season streak. I don’t remember him really lighting up. Might not be possible due to health? wouldn’t mind it though, not one bit.

(There are other players worth considering out there, like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the Zune vs players other than the iPod line as well.)

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.

Between me and my husband we’ve owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I’ve settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.
