Game 122: Yankees at Red Sox, Part II

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Aug 21, 2009 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

This starts in the fifth inning with the Yankees up 6-1.

UPDATE, 8:52 p.m.: Michael Bowden, called up today, is called in to pitch for Boston. Maybe the Yankees can get Marte’s feet wet later on.

UPDATE, 8:55 p.m.: Wow, 9-1 in the fifth inning as Matsui drills one into the bullpen. The line for Penny:

4 10 8 8 1 4.

That vaunted Red Sox pitching depth didn’t play out, did it?

UPDATE, 9:00 p.m.: Cano doubled with RISP. That’s it, I’m declaring this game over.

UPDATE, 9:06 p.m.: Now it’s 11-1. Yankees have outscored the Red Sox 36-9 in the last five games.

On Twitter? Follow Bob Klapisch of The Record. He needs followers. He’s at BobKlap.

UPDATE, 9:20 p.m.: Francona just pinch hit for Drew. They’re waving the white flag.

UPDATE, 9:36 p.m.: This was one of the guys Boston wouldn’t trade?

UPDATE, 9:41 p.m.: That rotten Jeter. He’s 3 for 4 with three scored and two RBI. I’m tired of these selfish antics.

Bowden is getting a Code Red here. Welcome back to the big leagues, son.

UPDATE, 9:51 p.m.: Next time you wonder why Hinske doesn’t play third, remember that he can’t play left field.

UPDATE, 9:59 p.m.: Brian Bruney = untrustworthy.

Pettitte needed to give them a lot more than five innings. Man, this is ugly baseball.

UPDATE, 10:01 p.m.: Here’s the problem, they could need Hughes, Coke and maybe even Mo to finish this off. That could change how the rest of the weekend plays out.

UPDATE, 10:08 p.m.: OK, I need to finish up my newspaper story. Play nice. I’ll be back postgame with reaction.

It’s getting late early in Beantown.

What’s the record for most 20 HR guys in a single lineup? Jeter, Damon, Tex, A-Rod, Matsui, Posada, Swisher and Cano can all get to 20 by year’s end.

  10. jennifer August 21st, 2009 at 8:56 pm

Maybe we can let Marte pitch. Might get close to a 10 run lead. :-)

Since the last yankees sweep the sox have gone 7-3.

Papi hit a few HR and there was all this talk about the Sox stabilizing and being on the “comeback trail”

But that was against buoyed by facing the Tigers and the Jays.

Tonight the yankees are once again ripping the heart out of the Red Sox chest.

Another utter beat down. They are just crushing the sox hitting without mercy.

They’ve squared up one ball after another.

And tonight was an absolute must win for the Sox.

With Tazawa going tomorrow against AJ the thoughts of getting swept again are going to creep into the Red Sox minds.

They can’t count on winning Beckett’s game because they are facing CC.

Brad Penny – amazing how a “no risk” move could be such a death knell.

Looks like Damon will be ok – it’s just a bruise. Man, I was worried – how many little ticky tack injuries have the Yankees had lately?

MG, I thought Andy was done…….and I’ve never been so glad to be so wrong. He’s given us not just innings, but quality innings.

I saw a discussion earlier about the Yankees and how they can’t assume that our older players are going to produce the same way that they are this year. Well, Jeter I think will continue to be his usual self and Alex should be better. Cano, Tex……..they’re in their prime. I totally agree about Damon and Posada. Since we think the Yankees understand that they can’t stay pat and count on the older guys to be as good (and we won’t have Matsui), what can we do to improve the team or even make it better? Are people ok with a Melky/Gardner platoon? I’m iffy on that – I don’t know that they can put up the same numbers. Most of us don’t want Bay or Holliday…….so, what can we do?

  31. Dima August 21st, 2009 at 8:59 pm

  44. trisha - OPPC lifetime member and true believer in karma. August 21st, 2009 at 9:01 pm

No idea if there will be a sweep, though my Lord it looks like a major league team playing against a sandlot team. I don’t necessarily think that the Sux are going to look good overnight. So I think that if our pitching holds up, we are good to go.

Meanwhile, getting the first game is the most important from a psychological standpoint, especially when you are at someone else’s stadium (or in this case, little league field.) So for my money, anything beyond this is gravy.

I HATE lopsided games. It makes me feel sad for the opposition. Except for this opponent. Truth.

“Wowza. Isn’t this the kids that shut down the Yankees in the first series?”

Yup. But simply put that was an entirely different yankee team.

Bowden has such a straight fastball. He comes right over head and there just isn’t much movement on the ball.

I was amazed the yankees didn’t tatoo him last time.

But right now they are on every pitch.

Bowden is a key piece to why the Red Sox are purported to have such a great minor league system. He was – by far – their best pitcher left in the upper minors.

It’s a different time now. These are different teams.

All that nonsense about the Red Sox being “winner,” “the better team” and how the yankees just “couldn’t” beat the Red Sox seems like a long time ago.

I think the Red Sox are in a tough spot, if they go with VMart behind the plate they miss out on Varitek’s superlative pitch calling and defense. If they go with Varitek behind the plate their lineup suffers. If I were Francona I’d stick with Tek behind the plate because he has a better chance of winning a pitching duel with the Yanks than a batting brawl.

  80. CB August 21st, 2009 at 9:08 pm

On a serious note I worry about that too. It seems that when the Yanks get a ton of runs in a game, the next day they are dry. But with this team there may be just enough to squeak by Beckett. Though he has slipped a bit too so it may be easier.

Varitek is throwing out 9% of baserunners. 9%.

That’s the lowest rate I can remember seeing for a long time.

I agree that they are stuck at catcher. Martinez is not good behind the plate at all.

But Varitek now has major defensive problems as well.

Throwing out runners isn’t everything behind the plate. It’s usually on the pitcher.

    But 9% is stunningly bad.

Love how they are working the count and still having good ABs.

It will pay off tomorrow. Boston’s pen still has to pitch 4 more innings.

I would guess they would get Bowden out of there before it gets embarrassing, not throw him to the dogs like they did Traber.

That means they need to use Bard, Saito, Delcarmen etc. in a blowout game. Probably no more 1 inning each.

I guess that long break is having an affect on Andy. I just checked the radar in Boston and there is no rain anywhere near the ballpark so this game will probably go 9 innings. West’s strike zone is pretty bad tonight. Pitches that were strikes in the 1st inning are balls in the 5th. Something needs to be done about umps and making bad calls. It is getting pretty bad.

  213. Rob B August 21st, 2009 at 9:31 pm

I’ll be very surprised if this isn’t Pettitte’s last inning; if he even finishes it. I’d say he has a 2 run leash right now. If he can’t finish the inning before then, he’s got to come out.

  214. Abdababdaserser August 21st, 2009 at 9:31 pm

We should win this game, but does anyone think Marte and crew will shut the Sox down the rest of the way? Wins against the Red Sox never come easy. The end result might be 14-9 or something like that.

I really hope Francona helps us out and starts resting his regulars. Even though we’re winning, I still don’t want to see our B level pitchers out there throwing 30 pitches per inning.

Need to lay off Andy. If the score had been 6-1, different story. But it’s still a decent game for the Yankees.

The only drawback is that it’s given them hope for tomorrow. Let’s hope that AJ yanks it away like a bully.

That’s a bad job needing yhevpen for 4 innings when you start the inning with sn 11 run lead.

Andy did the same thing in Atlanta when he coughed up a 7 run lead.

He’s the one guy on the staff that seems to have real problems pitching with large leads.

The wind is blowing out and this is still a game.

    Gotta keep scoring.

“OK, so maybe it’s not the white flag as Pettitte is getting knocked around in this inning.

It’s rarely nice crisp baseball when these teams play. ”

Pete you may have noticed that Pettitte sat 36 minutes on the bench? Jerry Remy certainly did and suggested that Andy’s problem may have come from that. We all have watched pitchers who were sailing along look bad after sitting for a while.

So as opposed to seeing this as “yet another game that just isn’t nice crisp baseball between these two teams” I see it as the predictable residuals that are a result of our pitcher sitting out a very long time.

Therefore, I am not having any pangs about the fact that the Sux are suddenly hitting. When a pitcher isn’t locating he is going to get hit. That simple.

  237. GreenBeret7 August 21st, 2009 at 9:34 pm

Any pitcher sitting for as long as Pettitte did and having a 12 run lead is going to lose his edge. The ‘pen is well rested and should be able to take it from here without any problem.

Interesting how Francona doesn’t seem worried about ruining the confidence of his team’s hottest pitching prospect. Instead, he’s letting him stay out there, get embarrassed, in order to save his pen.

I know he letting the kid take one for the team, but Bowden looks like he’s going to cry.

People need to relax on the Pettite issue.

Yankee fans are still paranoid about losing to the Red Sox.

You know what the most telling part of this game has been?

Tito pulling his starting players in the 5th and 6th inning of the first game in a three game set against the yankees.

That is just hard to believe. Tito has pulled Youkilis and Drew.

How high has Tito raised the surrender flag?

He sent Bowden out again to absorb more abuse when it was obvious that the yankees are seeing the ball right out of his hand and squaring up pitch after pitch after pitch.

Tito has surrendered this game. How embarrassing is it for the sox players left out on the field to player through this?

And yankee fans are worried about some magical red sox comeback because Andy gave up 3 runs.

Send Andy back out there. It’s not a problem in the least.

“Oh wow – you’re seriously outnumbered… thats bravery and dedication, Trisha.”

It’s a weird dynamic, Angel, because we all have great respect for each other so we tend to be sensitive to each others’ feelings, even when it comes to sports. It has actually been really easy for me because the Yankees have always been the better team. So I never suffered that end of things. And I came by my love honestly – and young – so there has never been a question about my team loyalty.

    You know, it’s just there.

So I can’t take any credit whatsoever! I think if the situation were reversed in terms of the team with the better pedigree it may have been more difficult for me to be on my lonesome team-wise.

Bowden’s ERA is over 17! Talk about throwing him to the wolves.

  311. Brian M August 21st, 2009 at 9:45 pm

Bowden was scheduled to start in AAA tomorrow night but bringing a young pitcher in on 4 days rest and asking him to come out of the bullpen in the middle of an inning and then proceed to throw a lot of pitches is not looking out for your young pitcher’s health.

Boston has a deep pen but in blowout games Francona will always abuse 1 or 2 guys.

I couldn’t believe the disregard he showed for Traber in the last series we had with them – leaving a LOOGY out for inning after inning.

I amn’t always in agreement with the bullpen calls Girardi makes, but at least we look out for our guys.

those are fun throws to watch but that’s not the first time Cano’s flip throw has pulled Teixiera off the bag. He clearly had time to stop and throw. At what point does it become hotdogging? It’s one thing when it’s his only alternative but quite another when he chooses it over a higher percentage throw.

  353. CB August 21st, 2009 at 9:52 pm

That play Cano just made shows what a garbage stat errors can be and why you can’t judge a players defense by the errors he makes.

How many other second baseman would even get to the ball to their right.

Cano makes a fantastic play. He could have just eaten the ball and not made the throw.

Most second baseman don’t even have the arm to try that throw even if they were to have the range to field the ball.

But he tries to get the out and just pulls tex off the bag.

And for that athletic talent and effort Cano is awarded with an error.

  354. SJ44 August 21st, 2009 at 9:52 pm

I’m sorry but Andy was terrible tonight, the offense and the terrible red sox pitching is why we are ahead. I really hope he doesn’t come back next year.

  370. Brian M August 21st, 2009 at 9:54 pm

At the start of the year the RS had Bucholtz, Bowden, Masterson, Bard and Tazawa all in the minors and Smoltz due back in the 2nd half.

They must look at next years team and wonder how they ended up here. Bowden could well rebound and be a decent pitcher next year for them, but with an aging, injured and expensive offense they don’t have the money to go and get more pitching next year.

  375. CB August 21st, 2009 at 9:55 pm

“How can that be a hit? That was sky high. Sympathetic scorer.”

Again. One of the stupid quirks of errors.

Most official scorers will not award an error if the player does not touch the ball.

So this inning we’ve seen Cano charged with an error by making a top notch effort and Melky not get one for a terrible play.

  376. The Ghost August 21st, 2009 at 9:55 pm

CB if Ellsbury is running Cano doesn’t get an error, but I think in this case the official scorer took into account the runner. I don’t think Cano gets that error either way at Yankee stadium because the OS would know that he normally does that, but it is seen as a hot dog play when he had time to plant and didn’t.

I think Ace needs to get into this game.

“What made you be a Yankee fan in the first place, Trisha?”

Angel it was total circumstance. My mom was from NY and so her family were big Yankee fans. Her sister is my godmother. So from a very young age I remember being driven to Yankee Stadium with my grandfather, godparents, and cousins. And my mom was a huge Joe DiMaggio fan. I truly believe that if I had different godparents I would have ended up a Sux fan. I got my love of the Yankees from my mom and her family. And this is a very funny add on, but true. A boy I went to grammar school with (and who was my boyfriend when we were 7 – if you know what I mean) was a Yankee fan. So I remember going to his house sometimes after school and watching Yankee games. It is so strange. His mom would set up two tray tables and give us ice cream roll.

  427. CB August 21st, 2009 at 10:01 pm

  428. terpbomber August 21st, 2009 at 10:01 pm

    strange but true –
if the score was 9-1 it would be a laugher. (8 run lead)
With a 15-7 score (same 8 run lead) you feel like it’s a lot close than it is.

A pure garbage performance by Bruney.

If he can’t pitch in games with 10 run leads, he has no business on this roster.

I can’t imagine it’s very easy to pitch every 5 days or more as a relief pitcher…It’s somewhat of a conundrum, let Bruney pitch to shake the rust off and give up runs…or continue to bench him and be worthless, I think he’s going to be a very important piece in the playoffs, he needs to pitch.

Especially the comments about Pettitte’s performance, Erica. The SJ that I’ve known on here would be reminding others that Pettitte was pitching after sitting for half an hour. From what I know of him on here, anyways.

  507. jpb1973 August 21st, 2009 at 10:11 pm

The problem I have with Bruney is that he doesn’t look like he cares when he’s pitching.

  508. SJ44 August 21st, 2009 at 10:11 pm

10 run lead, and Bruney throws a 3-2 slider with the bases loaded to walk in a run and proceeds to give up two more.

    That’s just awful.

Can’t use him if that’s his way of pitching.

    He’s useless to this team.

We’re probably going to need MO, Coke, and Hughes in this game

That’s OK though, a win is a win.

  512. YankeesLuv August 21st, 2009 at 10:13 pm

As we know Rice called out Arod, Manny and Jeter for flaunting their wealth caring too much about the $$. Well a writer that Kay knows emailed him about looking at a old Red Sox yearbook and a question was asked what Rice’s favorite thing about being a baseball player was? He said the 1st and 15th, that’s when they got paid. Nice.

  513. CB August 21st, 2009 at 10:13 pm

Tito putting Bowden into this game is going to look awful tomorrow.

He’s now had to use Declaramen but is throwing him in a much lower leverage situation than Bowden was in.

Bowden’s only value to the Sox was going to be giving them length to save their pen for tomorrow and he couldn’t do it.

  514. Rob B August 21st, 2009 at 10:13 pm

You know, I was as upset as the next person about Bruney walking in a run. But, I just had a thought:

If he throws a fastball over the middle, it might have been 4 runs in one swing. The S*x scored 3 the whole inning. Maybe not such a bad thing to walk in that run after all.

  515. Zach in Port Jeff August 21st, 2009 at 10:13 pm

    BD…

Kay tore into Rice pretty bad.

Even brought up a story about the old Sox players guide which has Jim Rice quoted as saying his favourite thing about baseball is “the 1st and 15th of the month”.

Kay pretty much said that Rice talked about Manny, A-Rod, and Jeter about caring more about the money and personal glory than being part of a team and then ripped into him because there is no reason to say that about Jeter. No one has ever accused him of caring about anything more than winning and that it is ridiculous to tell little kids not to be like Jeter. Jeter has built a pretty strong reputation because he is such a team player and has such a strong passion for winning.
He then said he got an e-mail or text or something from a writer from Yahoo sports saying when that writer was little, he got a yearbook at Fenway Park in which Rice was said his favorite part of playing pro was the first and fifteenth of every month (payday). Kay then ripped him for being a hypocrite, and rightfully so.

  591. Jeff in Canada August 21st, 2009 at 10:22 pm

Bruney looks insecure. Why over-throw so much? He’s going to generate a lot of anxiety in the playoffs.

Or maybe this is part of a clever plan of his to trick the Red Sox into thinking he throws smoke with no control. Then in the playoffs, he starts hitting his spots, and .. um .. boom goes the dynamite.

    Yeah…that’s what he’s doing.

  592. Darrin August 21st, 2009 at 10:22 pm

Hold on to something, every body. Marte has been terrible this season (injury or no), and as I recall from last year, he never did very well cleaning up someone else’s mess. This could get interesting yet.

  602. CB August 21st, 2009 at 10:23 pm

Bringing Marte in with the bases loaded to make his first appearance in the bigs in months is just not a good idea.

They don’t know exactly what marte has in terms of stuff and with the bases loaded Girardi is really risking this turning into a 16-11 game.

I guess we’re about to find out if that is true.

I hate feeling like this. I shouldn’t feel like this. But the horrible pitching is sucking all the joy out of this game. I wish I could forget about it and just enjoy the fact the Yankees have scored 16 runs. But watching Bruney walk the universe makes you wonder if any lead is safe.

  689. Rob B August 21st, 2009 at 10:31 pm

    “Marte’s back!”

Um, let’s not be too quick on that. Many people thought Bruney was back after his last few outings, and then look at him tonight. Question is, which is the aberration? And how many opportunities does Bruney have to prove he’s better than this? Girardi sure looked pissed. One more outing like this and Bruney might never see the outside of the bullpen again.

It is disappointing that we have to waste 4 relievers in a game where we had an 11 run lead.

AJ better give us innings tomorrow. I mean if he gets bombed and we’re trailing 8-0, it won’t natter… but if it’s a 5-4 game or something where Burnett labors and has like 100 pitches in 5 innings, then it will be tough.

  698. Nick in SF in Larkspur August 21st, 2009 at 10:33 pm

If Girardi was visibly, obviosly disgusted with Bruney’s performance tonight, are commenters on a Yankee blog allowed to be critical? Or is that strictly verboten?

  699. Raymagnetic August 21st, 2009 at 10:33 pm

BD I think Melancon is already eligible.

  700. Betsy August 21st, 2009 at 10:33 pm

I mean, Andy will be fine – he got totally thrown off by the long inning(still has to do better than that, but he’s allowed a bad one). Bruney is a problem……Even if Marte is effective, he’s not going to take Bruney’s place, correct? Marte will just be in to face lefties…… Bruney on the post-season roster is a real problem – he’s completely unreliable.

This might be one of those wins where you feel lucky to escape and where the good feeling doesn’t last too long due to having to use the pen in a game where we really shouldn’t have had to.

Unfortunately, Bruney has been like this his entire career.

He’s just not a guy you can trust. Never has been.

At this point, roster spots in the post-season are like gold.

You can’t waste them on a guy physically incapable of throwing strikes.

Call up Melancon and see if he can be trusted.

The Bruney Experiment has to end.

They have to use their better guys out of the pen tonight because Bruney can’t do his job.

Not enough to keep a roster spot in the post-season if you are interested in winning the WS.

  705. Joe Morgan August 21st, 2009 at 10:34 pm

Bruney pitched with great intensity tonight…not sure why Girardi took him out.

  706. BD 2.0 August 21st, 2009 at 10:34 pm

technically, Bruney did not allow a single run :)

    1.1 IP, 0 runs, 1 hit, 1HBP, 3 walks, 0 SO

  708. Freezie August 21st, 2009 at 10:34 pm

Place this on Petitte. He had a huge lead and hes walking guys and geting his pitch count up. So Girardi has to pull him, but he cannot burn guys he will need in close games so he goes with Bruney, who also has the big lead and walks guys. Petitte is a veteran hes got to throw strikes and give them 7 or 8 innings

Would be nice to get Mark Melancon back into the relief mix. Seems pretty mature for a rookie.

Bruney’s been around on yanks for how long now?

    3 years?

Wasn’t he on the Diamondbacks too for a while. Same story there.

Annoyingly inconsistent. Puts up a few good outings, then he flames out like tonight.

He seems real moody too, gotta be a drag fro coaches/teammates. Time to move on I think.

  716. James August 21st, 2009 at 10:36 pm

It’s funny how K-Rod and Bruney both have fallen off a cliff (relative to their respective successes) since their “fight”.

K-Rod has like a 6 ERA since that incident and 4 blown saves.

Bruney has been demoted to garbage time and his roster spot is hanging on by a thread.

  724. SJ44 August 21st, 2009 at 10:37 pm

You know why Girardi was #@#$ at Bruney? He shook off Posada to throw a slider on 3-2 to walk in a run with an 11 run lead.

From there, his performance continued to go downward.

No excuses to be that bad in this game.

What if Tito didn’t take everybody out? You think he’s kicking himself about that right about now?

    23 were balls.

  751. SJ44 August 21st, 2009 at 10:41 pm

    Its me.

Walking guys with 11 run leads is an unforgivable sin to me.

Shaking off the catcher to throw breaking balls with the bases loaded with an 11 run lead is a DFA offense to me.

This isn’t little league. You can’t trust a guy who pitches like that in close games.

You look at his career and tonights Brian Bruney is who he is.

When Sergio Mitre can pound the strikezone with a big lead, and you can’t, you have to do some real soul searching.

Make up an injury and DL him if you don’t want to DFA him.

Either way, you can’t waste a roster spot with him any longer. Time to move on.

I don’t get the criticism of Girardi, Andy was pitching a great game, he has to sit for 30 plus minutes, he loses his focus briefly in the fifth, and you aren’t going to let him come back in the sixth? You have to let him try to finish what he started, if possible.

Bruney is a mystery, no question about it, but Joe had to give him a chance to work out of it, especially with a big lead. He didn’t do it, so Joe took him out. So why is Girardi wrong for leaving them in?

He’ll probably make it into another 10 games before the year is out which would bring his salary to $6M. For a guy who is generally used in the 6th and 7th innings.

  792. Danny August 21st, 2009 at 10:48 pm

Assuming Mitre pitches the bottom of the 9th and gets through it…

Girardi only used 2 “relievers” today, one of them just called up today. Coke, Aceves, Hughes, MO, Robertson all fresh for tomorrow.

  793. SJ44 August 21st, 2009 at 10:48 pm

That’s not on Girardi. He has a big lead in the game, and a veteran pitcher on the mound. If Brian Bruney is going to do what he did tonight, he can’t be on the post-season roster.

It ain’t complicated. Frankly, to even have him on the roster right now is a joke.

Robertson can pitch in that role and see what Melancon can do. We already know what Bruney can do and that’s the problem.

  794. jpb1973 August 21st, 2009 at 10:48 pm

  815. Joe from Long Island August 21st, 2009 at 10:50 pm

So, Joe used Bruney, Marte, and Mitre tonight.

Of those, Marte could be used tomorrow as the LOOGY.

And Mo, the two Phils, Ace, and Robertson will have had two days rest for tomorrow and Sunday, before Monday’s day off.

Looks like pretty good BP management to me. For all the carping, Joe has done a pretty decent job of managing the pen, and getting the best record in baseball. Look at the Dodgers – Torre burns through another bullpen and his team if giving back it’s division lead.

And Godzilla goes deep again. Couldn’t happen to a more deserving team and set of fans.

Funny stuff SJ44, you say Robertson can pitch in that role. Just a few weeks ago you were saying how Robertson can’t be trusted and can’t throw strikes. Now he’s trusted and Bruney isn’t. Right.

It was one bad outing from Bruney. Awful, yes, it was TERRIBLE. But still, it was one outing right after a stretch of 4 good ones.

    Relax.

  828. Jeff NJ August 21st, 2009 at 10:51 pm

assuming the Yankees win this, if they play .500 ball the rest of the way, they finish with 97 wins. They will be better than .500, we are looking at a 100 win team here. We have to wait until the crapshoot that is the playoffs conclude to make definitive statements, but this Yankee team could wind up being one of the best ever. They only qualify if they get through Oct (and Nov this year).

  829. Brian M August 21st, 2009 at 10:51 pm

I was kinda shocked how Bruney was suddenly regarded as the main guy in the pen.

It doesn’t seem like long ago that everyone hated him, he was trying to throw instead of pitch and then just as we were all screaming for him to be cut, Posada called for a breaking ball and he drilled him in the chest with a 98mph fastball. Pete was frothing at the mouth.

He was always prone to walking guys and was never a good candidate for set-up guy. His attitude sucks.

Still a whole month to go. The only ones guaranteed jobs are Hughes, MO, and maybe Coke. Every other reliever has to earn it.

Girardi has shown he isin’t going to go with a veteran or a guy with experience. He is going to go with the guys who are the best… as evident by taking Albaladejo over Tomko despite the fact he wanted a long man.

Andy will be fine – the important thing is that he was pitching very well before the long inning. Bruney is a problem, but Marte was very encouraging and even Mitre did his job. It’s a beat down – whenever the Sox came back with runs, the Yankees came back with some of their own.

It’s funny that people think the fake SJ44 was posting when he’s making all the sense in the world.

Bruney will always be the throw throught the wall guy with no control. Walking three guys at the bottom of the order with an 11-run lead is absurd.

Anyway, enought about Bruney. He’s not worth the space.

The offense was great, and it was great to see Alex with 4 big hits tonight after scuffling a bit.

The pressure is completely off for the Yankees. The best the Sox can do from this series is shave one game off their lead.

Can we get rid of this guy already?

  894. CB August 21st, 2009 at 10:58 pm

The yankees have absolutely stuck a knife in the sox tonight.

There is no two ways about it.

The Sox were feeling good about themselves coming into this series. 7-3 over the last 10 games. Youkilis was now back, Drew healthier, Papi hitting a couple of HRs.

The Yankees not only are going to win this game they are beating down the Sox in a way which is just telling them that you are not even close to playing in our league.

This was a must win for Boston. We can complain about Bruney, etc. but those are minor points.

The story of this game is told by just looking behind home plate at fenway and seeing all of those empty seats.

The Yankees didn’t just beat the Sox. They embarrassed them.

And they embarassed them by just being better.

And it’s hard to just chalk this up to one of those days when you’ve just been swept in the bronx.

This has been a long day but at least the Yankees are in position to win. I wish the Sox bullpen was depleted but you can’t be greedy when your offense puts up a 20 spot.

AJ better be ready.. Sox are going to be angry.”

When will yankee fans stop being scared of the socks.

    Angry?

How angry was Tito when he conceded the game in the 4th inning of a game against the yankees at fenway park when he left Bowden out there to rot?

How angry were the Socks when they pulled Youkilis and Drew from the game?

    Angry?

They are holding on for deal life.

Tito has completely conceded the division and is just trying to position his team to compete for the wild card.

  922. Betsy August 21st, 2009 at 11:03 pm

RConn, I have NO problem with killing Bruney, but SJ’s posts throughout the night about how the game was awful, how the Sox were making a game of it, etc…….were, IMO, extremely…….extreme. The Sox never got close enough to sniff the lead and, I’m sorry, that SJ from earlier sounded like a troll.

I think DFAing Bruney would be a mistake……he’s got some talent, so you try to work with him. DFAing every player that struggles is silly. Now, if the Yankees determine this is who Bruney is and there’s just nothing to be done with him, ok……., but I don’t think we are at that point yet. The shaking off Posada thing is a bigger issue……I think Bruney has a big head and thinks he’s better than he is. In ST, he claimed he wanted to be the 8th inning guy so he could get a future contract as a closer.

Brutal. Just brutal. Both teams. We got away with one here.

Tazawa better hope the Yanks bats go flat tomorrow, or he’ll give up as many runs as Penny.

Assuming the Yanks blast him, maybe they won’t have anything left for facing Beckett. But CC’s pitching Sunday and we’ll most likely be up by 8.5 games by then.

And I agree with whomever posted that Bruney has a big head. Yep — his ego just doesn’t match up with his results. Great that he lost weight, etc., but what are you opening your trap up for in ST like that for? You’re just asking for it…

  946. Donnie - Will Meet Jim Rice Under the O'Neill Banner August 21st, 2009 at 11:06 pm

This is why rearranging the rotation to make sure it was Pettitte, AJ, and CC was a good thing. Mitre pitching would have been a disaster. This game would be 20-16 if he’d started.

I love Ken Singleton, but who cares if the game wasn’t pretty?

The Sox might be angry tomorrow, but that won’t help them against AJ – this is not football. Maybe they will tatoo him, but it won’t be because they wanted revenge

Pedroia, Martinez and Youklis are a solid 2,3,4. Not as good as ours – but good.

Those guys aside the Sox lineup is weak. It is the worst Sox team I have seen for in 10 years. They have 11 runs tonight – why, cos Andy was poor and we threw out our worst possible relievers.

We have AJ and CC starting the next two games with a fresh Hughes and Mo in the pen. I ain’t scared.

    “ANSKY August 21st, 2009 at 11:06 pm

Brutal. Just brutal. Both teams. We got away with one here.”

Incorrect. We ran up the score, and Pettitte sat for 36 minutes and got stiff. He never rebounded from it, and let them score a few runs that they never would have scored otherwise. It also lead to him leaving the game early, and the bullpen coming in. Bruney and Mitre have been outright terrible, but they wouldn’t be in the game if we didn’t have a 9 run lead.

Sure, I’d like to have won the game 20-7. It’s a very one-sided score, and it looks even worse for them. But a W is a W. If this game hadn’t gotten out of hand, we wouldn’t have been using our worst pitchers. To say we “got away with one” is just not true.

103 plate appearences without a walk for the captain. Keep counting Jim Rice. How’s this for a numbers game:

    Derek – 4 and counting

    Jim – 0. Forever.

1010. Joe from Long Island August 21st, 2009 at 11:11 pm

So, what did they Yanks do wrong here?
    1. Pettitte got out of synch after the Yanks second big inning.
    2. Bruney couldn’t throw strikes.
    3. Cano got an E, but it was a tough play; I wouldv’e scored that a hit.
    4. Melky and Hinske got messed up.
    5. Mitre’s getting lit up while trying to throw strikes to close it out in gar-bage time.

    Good points –
    1. The Yanks killed Boston in a game the Red Sox had to have.
    2. Marte did very well in a clutch spot.
    3. Alex busted out big time in a game against the hated Sox.

Overrall, the most concerning thing longterm is probably Bruney’s inconsistency.

Gee, the Yanks only beat Boston by, what, nine? See you tomorrow.

The Red Sox just lost 20-11. It’s 11 pm.

They are now down to the yankees by 7.5 games.

    And their consolation?

They have to fact AJ Burnett tomorrow in a day game.

This yankee team is brutal to play against.

You lose 20-11 and you have to face AJ Burnett and CC Sabathia over the next two days.

    Good luck with that.

The yankees have already accomplished what they needed to do.

They needed to win one game. That was it.

The Yankees need to keep up the pressure on them. They are still behind head to head, so as far as I’m concerned they aren’t even. Gotta erase those 8 losses.

Mitre is only there to soak up innings and pitch justwell enough to give the insane offense a chance.

He has started 6 games and we have won 4 of them. With the rosters about to expand not getting past 5 innings won’t even matter.

The next 10 days will be interesting. Cashman will work the waiver wire for pitchers. Theo will do the same…

As long as AJ pitches a good game tomorrow the Yanks should be able to put some runs on the board against Tazawa. He is not ready for the majors and doesn’t have good stuff.

I wasn’t worried at all. I was hoping they’d come out and step on the Sox’s neck tonight. Despite the end score – they did exactly that. Francona taking out key players early in the game was acknowledgement that they did that.

  1031. PittsburghYankeeFan August 21st, 2009 at 11:14 pm

Man, what is wrong with you guys?

Going into this series, Yankees had to win one. They did it basically by the second inning. The strategy at that point is to make the Sox use up their BP.

Pettitte was off tonight, and then had to sit for 40 minutes. He was rusty. Giradi let him pitch with an 11 run lead.

Bruney has not pitched in 5 days. He was rusty. Let him pitch with an 11 run lead. The guy throws 96 with movement. Get the walks out of his system.

Use Damaso Marte when letting up a GS doesn’t change the game at all.

Sergio Mitre is Sergio Mitre. He is the garbageman until September 1. Let him pitch with a 13 run lead and 2 outs.

Take each game day by day. The pitching matchups still favor the Yankees the rest of this series.

Worst case 5 up, best case 9 up. Likely case 8 up (go 2-1). This team is 6-2 on their longest road trip of the year. Give them a break.

  1032. SJ44 August 21st, 2009 at 11:15 pm

    These runs don’t mean anything.

This is now all about who is going to pitch themselves onto the post-season roster. That’s what it comes down to.

Two guys have probably pitched themselves off the roster and now have to show Girardi they can be trusted.

That’s what this is all about.

The Sox? Their small shot at winning the division ended tonight.

They are playing for the WC.

If the two teams meet in the post-season, neither Mitre nor Bruney won’t be factors in those games.

  1033. pat August 21st, 2009 at 11:15 pm

Alex was 4-4 with a triple, missed a HR by inches and a walk in a 20 run game and had 1 RBI.

That’s not easy to do.

The inning matters. When the Yankee pitchers gave up 3 runs in the 5th, and 3 more in the 6th, it made me nervous because they had a lot of time to come back. By the time they were scoring with 2 outs in the ninth, it really didn’t phase me. They were 13 runs down. 4 didn’t mean anything. I just didn’t believe they could score 9 more with just 1 out to work with.

Ugly game. But only after the Yankees had a huge lead really. Just wish Bruney hadn’t sucked the life out of the middle of it.

  1036. Pepitone August 21st, 2009 at 11:17 pm

You want to talk about DFAing somebody, I nominate Mitre.

He has shown me nothing since they brought him up. I thought he might give them a few good innings, but nope, he’s not major league material.

  1037. Lou_in_Vermont August 21st, 2009 at 11:17 pm

Yanks are now 15-4 in August. Continue playing at that rate (not likely) and they will have 108 wins…..

“I’m sure the Yankees are terrfied. Bet you they won’t sleep at all.

    Seriously, get a clue.”

Maybe you should get a clue. The Red Sox scored nine runs tonight off the Yankees.

    ————————————————————

If this wasn’t a Boston fan’s attempt at spinning a total throttling of the Red Sox, I’d say this was said in jest. However, he really believes this. Boston fans don’t normally have a sense of humor like that…Dennis and Ray being the exceptions to that rule.

  1039. Abdababdaserser August 21st, 2009 at 11:22 pm

That is the trouble with long big scoring innings. It can take the starter out of the game.
