Greetings from Fenway Park

Peter Abraham
August
21

According to my car dashboard, it was 99 degrees as I drove past Fenway Park a few minutes ago before dropping $40 to park.

Nonetheless, a bunch of the Yankees are on the field for optional batting practice including Derek Jeter, Nick Swisher, Eric Hinske, Jorge Posada, Melky Cabrera and Robbie Cano.

The hardest-working man in baseball right now is Dave Eiland, who is throwing BP. Joba Chamberlain and Phil Coke are shagging, too. Those guys always show up for early BP, they love just being on the field.

Dante Girardi is shagging flies in left field. His pops is keeping is a close eye on him.

    Let’s hope there’s no rain…

  2. TJ

Never underestimate guys that show up for optional practice.

  3. Cash is King

I hope it doesn’t rain this weekend.

  4. Darrin

On my way back from lunch, they played “Hit Me With Your Best Shot” on the radio. This has to be a good sign, no?

  5. dadofjft

No free parking for the beat writers, huh? Is that the case at Yankee Stadium, too?

  6. RalphieD (OPPC)

    wow…99 degrees?…thats the new boston-based boy band!

  7. dadofjft

Darrin, I heard “Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick” at lunch. It must be a good omen.

  8. JIK

Not surprised the Captain is there, but glad to hear Melky and Cano are also working on their swings. If those two get hot, forget about it.

why did Jim Rice rip Jeter? He mad that Jeter is gonna be a first ballot hof?

  10. mg

    Jim Rice comments on ESPN…

“You see a Manny Ramirez, you see an A-Rod [Alex Rodriguez], you see [Derek] Jeter …

Guys that I played against and with, these guys you’re talking about cannot compare,” Rice said to Little Leaguers gathered in the cafeteria.

“We didn’t have the baggy uniforms. We didn’t have the dreadlocks,” Rice said. “It was a clean game, and now they’re setting a bad example for the young guys.”

    http://sports.espn.go.com/spor.....id=4414291

Don’t know why he lumped Jetes in there … bulletin board material!

  11. EricNS

On that one Rice should have put his mind in gear before he put his mouth in motion – don’t know why he ripped the Captain.

    repost:

    pat,

Do you know what was left out?

His point is these guys don’t compare to the guys he played against.

    What does that mean?

Stats? Class? Playing the game the right way?

    Jeter does all three.

And to me, he seems timeless and could fit in any era. Can you image the Sterling back in the 20’s? “And a base hit from Jetah! Oh, look at that Suzyn! The classic Jeterian shwing!”

Rice, like a lot of old-timers are resentful of the huge contracts that players get nowadays. But is that a reason to hate on Jeter? You’d need a ream of paper to list all the overpaid players since Rice’s time.

  13. betsy

Jim Rice is a jerk and a blowhard…..and including Jeter in his rant shows he’s also clueless and bitter. Who is he kidding? Any person with a brain knows that Jeter is not at all like he depicted. IMO, he represents what is right with the game…..and that is why he commands a great deal of respect. ESPN posted that article, so they are not going to care one way or the other what Jimbo said about Jeter, but I hope that the media calls him out on this. If you listen to other broadcasters or even to national broadcasters, you hear how they respect Jeter.

    Jim Rice is completely irrelevant.

Read the comments on ESPN, they seem to have the same consensus:

  15. Scottygelbs

When the hell are lineups going to be posted? I’m getting so antsy I can’t friggin wait til I get outta work!

  16. Billy

Rice should have given his speech in front of the Green Monster because he owed his career to it.

  17. Erica - always OPPC

    new thread already

  18. JOHN

    pictures Pete!! Utilize that iphone!

  19. BX Bomber

yo, if some of you are as bored at work as i am, a new hobby of mine is going to the red sox site, fullcount, and arguing with the fans. they don’t post nearly as much, but the author is normally good (although i thought his Yankee post was ignorant). oh well, good for a laugh.

    repost also

Tyler Kepner interviewed on EEI and said he believes Yanks will take the division, quoted that no Yankee team with a 7-game lead ever lost the division, hedged a bit, and then ended up saying he thought Yanks would win it.

    Anyway, GO YANKEES!!!

I don’t envy Pete a bit and have gone from thinking that he has a sweetheart of a job covering the Yankees to thinking that it’s a heck of a haul throughout the season. After a while, I would think that it becomes as routine as any other job. I hope that the press box is cool at least.

Cash we have rain forecasted for the entire weekend (or at least chance of rain or thundershowers) but the sun has come out here and is shining brightly. But you know what they say about New England weather…

  21. the man

Imagine his bad tubby pete’s car must smell after that long drive?

  22. sam

    how about a pic pete?

  23. Zach

“Joba Chamberlain and Phil Coke are shagging, too. Those guys always show up for early BP, they love just being on the field.”

Whaaat? i thought Joba was just a big ego kid, whos getting paid millions, who doesnt listen to anyone except himself? guess not

  24. Stateman52

Get Dante off the field before he gets hurt.

  25. tom

maybe someday they will get a real ballpark. its a urine smelling cramped old dirty dump infested by snobs. Jim Rice s*cks too !

  26. nettles

Jim Rice never took early BP.

  27. Heinz

canofan42 – thanks for the link. i’m glad to see that even sox fans are stepping up to disagree w/ jim rice about jeter.

    big weekend, bury the sox.

  28. TJ

Jim Rice couldn’t buy a ticket to the HOF if it wasn’t for that LL field he played 1/2 his games in.
Maybe Bucky Dent would have made the Hall if he got to hit popups at that wall 81 games a year!

  29. robix

“Joba Chamberlain and Phil Coke are shagging, too.”

    What a great sentence.

  30. Rob in Vt.

I’d say the extra BP worked pretty well. :)
