My, how things have changed

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Aug 21, 2009 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Remember when the Yankees were 0-8 against the Red Sox this season?

They are 5-0 since, having outscored their old rivals 45-19. The Yankees are 26-8 since the All-Star break and the Red Sox 15-18.

Mike Mussina is no longer the last Yankee to win a game at Fenway Park.

Back with more from the clubhouse.

That was awesome. Even Mitre’s suckfest at the end was strangely hilarious.

Going into this series, Yankees had to win one. They did it basically by the second inning. The strategy at that point is to make the Sox use up their BP.
Pettitte was off tonight, and then had to sit for 40 minutes. He was rusty. Giradi let him pitch with an 11 run lead.
Bruney has not pitched in 5 days. He was rusty. Let him pitch with an 11 run lead. The guy throws 96 with movement. Get the walks out of his system.
Use Damaso Marte when letting up a GS doesn’t change the game at all.
Sergio Mitre is Sergio Mitre. He is the garbageman until September 1. Let him pitch with a 13 run lead and 2 outs.
Take each game day by day. The pitching matchups still favor the Yankees the rest of this series.
Worst case 5 up, best case 9 up. Likely case 8 up (go 2-1). This team is 6-2 on their longest road trip of the year. Give them a break.

  8. Jonathan C. August 21st, 2009 at 11:16 pm

The Yankees got the win but the Red Sox still scored 11 runs. Can’t let that happen again. There’s something to be said about stepping on the other team’s throats and going for the jugular when you get the chance.

  9. Angel - A tale told by idiots, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing August 21st, 2009 at 11:16 pm

I wasn’t worried at all. I was hoping they’d come out and step on the Sox’s neck tonight. Despite the end score – they did exactly that. Francona taking out key players early in the game was acknowledgement by the Red Sox that they did just that.

  10. RalphieD (OPPC) August 21st, 2009 at 11:17 pm

as far as im concerned…the yankees have basically accomplished what they needed to this weekend..do. not. get. swept….and they did that…i fully expect to take the series but they did what they had to…

ALL the pressure is on the sox now…they HAVE to win the next two games…and that will be no small feat with tazawa going tomorrow…

  11. C August 21st, 2009 at 11:18 pm

MY FIRST AND ONLY POST. SORRY ABOUT ALL CAPS FOLKS BUT THE YANKS JUST PUT A 20 SPOT ON BOSTON AND TOOK A 7.5 GAME LEAD IN THE AL EAST!!!!!!! DAMN IT FEELS GOOD!!!!!!!!!

LOVED THAT HENRY WAS IN THE NESN BOOTH. HOW YOU LIKE THEM APPLES??!?!?!?!?!?!??!

  12. Ross (sacrificed a foot on the altar of A-Rod - waiting for that hot streak) August 21st, 2009 at 11:18 pm

“The Yankees got the win but the Red Sox still scored 11 runs. Can’t let that happen again. There’s something to be said about stepping on the other team’s throats and going for the jugular when you get the chance.”

Pettitte never had it from the get-go tonight, and the umpire’s zone didn’t help. The other runs were scored off Sergio Mitre.

Somehow, I’m not overly concerned. Marte’s brilliant outing is one hell of a boost, actually. Love to have another good lefty to pair with Coke.

  13. Rachel August 21st, 2009 at 11:18 pm

As long as AJ pitches a good game tomorrow the Yanks should be able to put some runs on the board against Tazawa. He is not ready for the majors and doesn’t have good stuff.

  14. QuestCrew August 21st, 2009 at 11:19 pm

    Good Job Yanks!!!!

  15. DJ August 21st, 2009 at 11:19 pm

Pettitte struggled from the long waits in between innings. He’ll tell you he should of been able to pitch better but a win is a win.

  16. Betsy August 21st, 2009 at 11:19 pm

This wasn’t ugly at all to me……at times frustrating, but who cares? The Yankees stomped on the Red Sox and broke their hearts…..at least in this one game. EVERYTIME they scored (the Sox, that is), the Yankees came back – that is crushing to a team. Andy – no problem with him. He got out of sorts with the long inning. Bruney is always questionable and Mitre stinks. We didn’t use Mo, Hughes, Coke, Robertson……….not bad.

Alex had a great game – um, I wonder if he will get ANY credit now for coming up big against the Sox? Jeter – he’s ridiculous. The offense was insane…….

    Great win………..

    Good post PittsbughYankeeFan-

Now’s the time to see who can step up and pitch in the bullpen against the better teams. 10 more days to see who is in the bullpen able to make the postseason roster.

After Rivera and Hughes, who do you trust that can do the job in the playoffs?

Anybody catch the quote that Michael Kay relayed about Rice and something attributed to him in a Boston yearbook ? If that was true – it would be a great to put Rice on the spot when he faces the press again.

“Pettitte never had it from the get-go tonight, and the umpire’s zone didn’t help. The other runs were scored off Sergio Mitre.”

True, but Pettitte and Mitre should not have allowed the Red Sox to score that many runs in a losing effort. It would be awesome if the Yankees could score 20 runs a game each and every time but let’s just enjoy this one for what it is and move on to the rest of the series.

  25. pat August 21st, 2009 at 11:22 pm

Alex was 4-4 with a triple, missed a HR by inches and a walk in a 20 run game and had only 1 RBI.

That’s not easy to do.

  26. GGBG August 21st, 2009 at 11:23 pm

The 11 runs the Sox scored tonight are akin to how teams scored against the undefeated Patriots team when the Pats were up 45-0. Garbae time runs are irrelevant.

I guess Pete has now come over to the sane side of the argument.

Rice is a loser I dont even think he is a hall of fame player. Look at Rice home/away splits. He did benifit a lot from playing in fenway. The stuff he said about Jeter is stupid. And A-Rod is 100 times the player Jim Rice was.

  34. Patrick August 21st, 2009 at 11:25 pm

Bruney hasn’t pitched himself off the postseason roster. Please get control of yourselves. Who is making the roster ahead of Bruney? Chad Gaudin? Sergio Mitre? Mark Melancon?

The overreaction over Bruney’s performance has been astonishing. One bad outing and he gets thrown under the bus. I can only surmise that those of you ripping into the guy hated him to begin with. There is no reason to jump to these insane conclusions. He had one bad game. Get over it, I guarantee you Girardi already has.

“Jonathan, who cares if the Sox scored 11? They did it long after the game was over…….

Letting a team score 11 runs while blowing them out gives them some confidence, even thought they did it against Pettitte who was not very sharp and Mitre who should not be allowed to start again for the Yankees. And yes, Burnett should have more wins than he does this year. Let’s hope the Yankees pull off a sweep this weekend at Fenway.

This game would been played much differently if there was an urgency about it.

Guys like Mitre and Marte pitched tonight while Robertson, Hughes, Coke, and Mo all had the night off.

So they may have given up 11 runs, but Girardi also let guys stay out there much longer because his team had such a big lead.

  37. Betsy August 21st, 2009 at 11:26 pm

    How good is this team?

  42. GGBG August 21st, 2009 at 11:29 pm

    Betsy

Rice was ripping on the material nature of today’s players, specifically ARod, Manny and (for some reason) Jeter. Specifically, Rice said that none of those guys could have played when he played. That’s a real pot shot at Jeter who has been about the best team player there is for about 13 years now.

Kay really ripped into him about calling out Jeter. Went off on him in a big, big way.

  43. Tunnel Man August 21st, 2009 at 11:30 pm

I agree He has been pitching well his last couple of outings. I think he had 6 days off that is a long time for a reliever you wonder if that effected his commmand. You have a month and a half to evaluate how Bruney pitches down the stretch. A lot of things can happen between now and the postseason.

Those runs in the 6th inning shouldn’t have scored. The only reason they did was the two “errors” to the first two batters in the inning. Once again, Pettitte’s defense was noy good, but, the offense bailed out the defense and bullpen.

Jonathan, I really don’t think scoring late inning runs are going to give the Sox any more confidence than they already had. They did squat against Marte, who hadn’t pitched since April……after that, they hurt Bruney and a lousy Mitre. They may kill AJ tomorrow, but it won’t be because of these late runs. The Yankees DID put their feet down on the Sox tonight…..

I really feel very positive about tonight. Again, the Sox won a similar game back in April (or was it May?) and no one questioned them. You see this type of game more often than you would like. When a team like the Yankees are putting together a dominating performance, the fielding takes a bit of a hit. Especially when the chances that they blow the game are low.

12 batters in one inning. 29 minutes long, that is going to take a pitcher out of his groove.

BP for the postseason is Mo, Hughes, Robertson, Coke, Aceves. I trust everyone but Coke.

SP are CC, AJ, Pettitte, Joba.

If you carry 12 pitchers, you have 3 spots left. Interesting competition: Bruney, Marte, Melancon plus who?

Maybe you carry 11 pitchers and more of a bench? Gardner, Hariston, Hinske, Molina are there…add Pena?

The postseason on the bubble are Bruney, Marte, Pena, Melancon. 3 of the 4 will get on.

    Lots to love tonight:

Penny’s emasculation (by us and the home crowd).
    Francoma’s idiotic premature white flag.
Joe’s use of Marte in a tight spot and his stuff looking stellar despite the weirdness at Scranton.
The usual crybabies on here fixating on Bruney.
Even Mitre’s 9th, which should throw cold water on any pipe dreams that he’s a legit major leaguer.

Now we put the stake in them and knock them out of the playoffs altogether.

By the way, anyone still think moving Hughes to the pen was “the waste of an asset”?

If someone told us before the game that the Yankees would outscore the Sox by 9 tonight, I wonder if anyone would complain about “not stepping on their throats enough”? Lol.

The ending was ugly but the overall results were clear. The Yankees’ biggest lead in this game was 11 runs, and they ended up winning by 9, so I hardly think they let the Sox creep up by a lot.

  93. Giuseppe Franco August 21st, 2009 at 11:48 pm

Pete was singing a much different tune after the Yanks got swept by the Angels.

Much of the Yankee fanbase were in a state of panic and some of us weren’t that concerned. See for yourself which side people resided on back then:

    http://yankees.lhblogs.com/200.....od-enough/

To a man — and manager — the Yankees said that getting swept by the Angels was no big deal and that they still had a good first half.

Fair enough. They are 51-37 and if the playoffs started tomorrow, they would be the wild card.

But the Yankees have played four teams (the Angels, Red Sox, Phillies and Tigers) who lead their respective divisions at the break and they are 5-15 against those teams. That’s why you can’t dismiss this weekend as just some bad luck.

The idea for a $210 million team in a $1.5 billion ballpark isn’t to make the playoffs, it’s to win them. For now, the Yankees have not been especially competitive against the best teams.

That has to change in the second half. The Yankees have 10 more games against Boston, three against the Angels and three against the Tigers starting on Friday. And don’t forget the nine games left against Tampa Bay.

The Yankees were nine games out after 88 games last season. So while this season has been significantly better, it’s still not good enough. How they play in those 25 games will determine how good this team really is.

  94. Scott F August 21st, 2009 at 11:48 pm

I bet AJ and CC won’t sleep too much after watching what the Sox offense did tonight.

Thank god we got this one game. Sox offense is smoking.

  95. miggs August 21st, 2009 at 11:49 pm

“I just felt that the Yankees truly took it to the Sox like a good team should do. They ripped the heart out of the Sox – and I especially love how they returned the favor after the Sox scored. Fenway is a great home field advantage for the Sox and they really were never in it……”

Couldn’t have said it better myself. They pounded the Sox from the beginning. Penny never had a chance. And every time there was a glimmer of hope for them, we scored multiple runs the very next inning. It was as quiet a crowd as I can ever remember at a game there.

Things have obviously changed (though only against Boston, we stumbled against Chicago), but at the time he was just saying what the truth was.

“I thought Andy was fine the defense let him down in the 6th.”

Agreed. Awarding Ortiz a hit on that popup was ridiculous. If the Yankees made those 2 outs like they should have, Pettitte probably would have gotten through 6 innings with 4 runs allowed. For a guy who was due for a bad outing, that’s not bad at all. Before the long break, I was actually encouraged by how well he was settling into the game.

  103. JFK August 21st, 2009 at 11:53 pm

Sox got most of there runs off walks by Bruney who was struggling with his command. A couple of bad defensive errors and Mitre pitching in the 9th. The red sox offense doesn’t get much credit scoring 11 runs. Those were gifts from the yankees.

  104. Betsy August 21st, 2009 at 11:54 pm

Miggs ………I think the quieting of a crowd in the opposing team’s park is something teams love to do….just take them completely out of it. AJ was quoted in ST that he loves to take the crowd out of it……and that is in part the reason why he’s had success against the Sox and Yanks in Fenway and OYS.

  105. ARK $$ August 21st, 2009 at 11:55 pm

Uncle….it’s nice when the internet can bring two posters together, lol…..

I want to keep my positive vibe going, but I’m still puzzled as to AJ’s terrible performances in Fenway earlier this year. I figure he was too tightly wound in his first start, putting pressure on himself to perform as a Yankee in his first start between the bitter rivals. The 2nd start……well, I suppose he was so bad he would have been hit no matter who he was against. I’d love to see him pitch a great game tomorrow……

I would put Swish in the 2 hole. He has hit very well this season batting there ahead of the big boys. Cano doesn’t do anything with RISP so he isn’t a good option up in the lineup. He needs to stay at the bottom until he improves his at bats.

Same lineup as tonight with Hinske starting in LF for Damon. I think Jorge catches all 3 games this series. He’s done night games followed by day games and its a 4 PM start. Plus they had yesterday off.

We just saw Pettitte and Bruney shut the Sox down 2 weeks ago. We know they’re capable of doing it, which makes it easier to write this game off (just like it’s easy to write 0-8 off after these last 5 wins). Marte was still a question mark, but in his short stint he definitely looked like he could be a useful part down the stretch.

    ————————————————————

I don’t think that Aceves is made to be a reliever….at least not yet. In his mind and body, he’s still a starter, but, he’s also a team player. It takes a while to get used to the inconsistant work schedule….short bouts of inconsistancy, followed by long runs of lights out. I think that it’s also tough physically on him. Usually, he doesn’t have the time to come in out of the pen and settle in…..he’s full bore from the start. I think that he talks with Rivera a lot, because, really, that’s the roll that Rivera had in 1995 and 1996. Rivera is just a freak of nature, but, he has a PHD in bullpen. Imagine having the best ever in their field as your mentor and instructor.

  158. RS August 22nd, 2009 at 12:13 am

It’s a shame that Pena had to get sent down. With Damon out for a few days, I’d much rather see Hairston in LF than Hinske (even though I like his bat), but that would leave us with no utility infielder or pinch runner.

I guess the Yankees could bring up someone else from AAA, but then who would we send down? I can’t wait until rosters expand in September because having both Mitre and Gaudin in the rotation is kind of hurting our flexibility and depth.

Put the foot on the throat. Don’t give Tazawa an easy out like Molina. Make him face our (almost) A lineup.

Would a lineup of Jeter, Swisher, Teixeira, Arod, Matsui, Posada, Cano, Hinske, and Melky be the slowest in the majors? Maybe even the slowest lineup ever…

I believe Andy has to be closing in on 200 wins as a Yankee. I think he’s at 197.

Jeter all time Yankee hit leader. Petite with 200 Yankee wins. :D

“They aren’t going to DFA Bruney. Were you whining about him in his last 5 games? Five games, 6 innings, 3 singles 1 walk and 3 strikeouts. Seems pretty solid to me. I’ll take 5 out of 6 every time.”

as i said…they arent going to DFA bruney nor should they…someone was debating that melancon shouldnt be there to replace bruney because they needed someone better and i disagreed…i do not want bruney off the team at all..but if there is one guy to replace in the pen, its him..

Regarding Bruney. The last time he pitched before tonight was seven days ago on August 14th so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that he would walk guys with his past command issues.

Also, I think Joe West is one of the worse umpires in baseball and needs to retire. I can’t stand to watch him anytime I see him umpiring a game. He didn’t help Pettitte tonight with his screwy strike zone.

you could still win if no one else is closer. Love the optimism that Jeter will continue his torrid pace.

I based mine on his season pace of 1.4 hits per game.
recently he’s been about 2.76 per game. I think.
forgot about the double header even thoug i checked the updated schedule. I bet he plays the first game though.

GB, that’s a good point. I keep forgetting that Ace has always been a starter……..and earlier this season he, in fact, had questions whether his body could hold up under the strain of being a reliever. I just hope his arm is ok……

Rivera is basically a 2nd pitching coach…….In fact, upon his retirement, I’d love to see Mo stay in the organization as a pitching coach or just overall mentor (even to non-pitchers).

“Yanks will be exhausted after this 4 hour game and I’m basically a rookie that they only saw a couple innings of. They have a tendency of piling on in one game and going to sleep the next game. I can take advantage of that and their fatigue for about 5 innings or so then hand it off to Okijima, Delcarmen, and Papelbon”

  179. Betsy August 22nd, 2009 at 12:29 am

Yep Bruney was hitting 98 on the radar gun. Usually he is hitting 94-96. I think the 6 days rest affected him that is an awful long time for a reliever not to pitch. He looked maybe too strong out there. He’s been pitching well lately you rather have him struggle in a blowout than in a close game.

“NESN reported that Bowden got sent down after the game. No roster move on a call up yet.”

This was an amazing stat from jack curry:

“In the last five meetings between the Yankees and the Red Sox this month, the Yankees have won all five by a combined score of 45-19.

As revealing as that statistic is, there is another number that is also revealing. On the days of the five losses, the Red Sox have made 15 transactions.

So when the Red Sox play the Yankees these days, they keep shuffling their roster. It is the sign of a faltering team, the sign of a team that is searching for some kind of winning combination. So far, the Red Sox have not found it against the Yankees, which is why they trail them by 7 ½ games in the American League East.”

    From the Boston Globe –

“Catcher/first baseman Victor Martinez, who left tonight’s game shortly after fouling a ball of his big left toe, said he is OK and will be in the lineup Saturday.

“It’s a little sore, that’s all,” Martinez said. “It’ll be fine tomorrow. I think I’m playing first.”

Jason Varitek, who had missed three games because of muscles spasms in his neck, replaced Martinez and hit a solo home run in the ninth inning. Manager Terry Francona had planned to start Varitek at catcher Saturday and Sunday.”

Posada will play tomorrow afternoon. Bank on it.

It’s a later time than a normal day game and he just got two days off on Wednesday and Thursday.

If they win tomorrow, you’ll probably see Molina in the lineup catching Sabathia on Sunday night.

  191. Betsy August 22nd, 2009 at 12:37 am

Wow, those are amazing numbers, CB…… I guess instead of the Scranton Shuttle, it’s the Pawtucket Patrol…..Man, I would kill for AJ to be dominant tomorrow, but I’ll take good…….and a win.

  192. Giuseppe Franco August 22nd, 2009 at 12:38 am

Tazawa has been getting knocked around by righties and Girardi would probably prefer to have the better defender out there.

Having a short bench in the american league is not that big of a deal. Pena was basically only being used as pinch runner for the team. Dont know why people want Mitre DFA he is a 5th starter. I dont think they have better starting options in Scranton. Gaudin is the spot starter for Joba/long man in the bullpen. Mitre wont be on the playoff roster. The yanks are about to run away with the division Mitre starts wont even be that important. Just let him eat innings which is basically what the yanks want him to do.

    Uncle Ellsworth,

Since I am going to the night game on Sept. 7th, I say Sept. 7th night game – 1st inning – tie record
    5th inning – break record

So Fran picked the night game. Ruling. If you pick the correct game it trumps being closest if that makes sense.
Say you picked the firstinning of the day and someone had the first inning of the second But Jete breaks the record in the 9th inning of the first game- the person who picked the correct game would win. This may or may not be obvious just stating for the record.

Remember all of that talk about how valuable Brad Penny would be for the Red Sox in a trade? They had so much pitching that they could move Penny – but only if they made the deal on their terms because it would take a ton to motivate the Sox to make the deal.

    Here’s a good Gammons memory:

” Oh, Brad Penny would probably be the best starting pitcher out there, but unless someone comes up with a Justin Smoak, Matt LaPorta or Brett Wallace — which isn’t going to happen — they are going to hold onto Penny, who is two years removed from finishing third in the NL Cy Young race.

Early in the season, Penny came out throwing 88-90 mph in the first couple of innings and gradually worked his way up to 94. After months of doing the Boston shoulder program, he’s opened the first inning at 95 mph in his last five starts. In his last two starts, against the Yankees and Marlins, he hasn’t allowed an earned run. ”

LOL Gammons is always good for a laugh. I guess the “boston shoulder program” doesn’t teach you how to pitch. Brad Penny is proof that people are too in love with radar guns and how hard you throw. So far Theo got an F for his offseason moves. Everyone was a bust.

  207. Tunnel Man August 22nd, 2009 at 1:04 am

    CB-

    That Gammons article is priceless!

I’m laughing so hard at exposed propaganda: Penny this, Smoltz that. Gammons is a friggin joke.

In this last 10 starts, the ‘Roid Sox are 2-8 when Penny pitches

  209. BD 2.0 August 22nd, 2009 at 1:19 am

Thing is, there was a market for Brad Penny when Gammons wrote that.

But perhaps the Sox either knew their pitching depth wasn’t as great as the media wanted us to believe.

Or the Sox foolishly overvalued Penny as much as Gammons did.
