Sam Borden writes that the “new” Alex Rodriguez could have a big weekend ahead of him as the Yankees take on the Red Sox.

Congrats to Sam and Journal New columnist Rick Carpiniello. They were among the winners in the New York State Associated Press Association writing contest. Sam finished third in sports writing and Carp won the honors for columns. It’s great to work with two talented guys like that.

This blog took the top honors in its category for the second year in a row. If there’s any money involved, drinks are on me.

Pete – I know ARod isn’t your favorite guy, but let’s all admit that ‘Lightning-Rod’ is a product of the press. After all, if the MSM didn’t write something about something, nobody has a job.

Everty day, players fart, kiss their girlfriends, or wear a funny shirt. Happens dozens of times every day, but we don’t hear about it. It ain’t ‘newsworthy’. Unless ARod farts, kisses a girlfriend of wears a funny shirt. Then, thousands of words are written in papers and blogs nation wide, analyzing ARod and somehow tying his behavior to his insecurity, ‘womanizing’ (something NO others players do!) or whatever pop psychology a writer can come up with.

Outside of NY, short of beating their wife or shooting the bartender, we don’t hear about other players… because really…. who cares? Gossip is only juicy about the famous. Nobody is interest in my bowel habits, but ARod’s would be front page news. (ARods bowels are loose! Is it the pressure of the big game???? Did he get something from Kate???? Did he get something FROM ANOTHER WOMAN?????)

Yes… ARod has been better about disappearing and saying nothing when he has to speak. I’m very glad for him. It’s too bad he has to walk a tightrope, but that’s the cost of being ARod.

But to some extent, the MSM has fallen down on the job of late. After all, Kate Hudson has been seen in the stands. Certainly a story about his womanizing… or his insecurtity of needing a friend at the game to ‘watch him’, is newsworthy. The other night, I saw him one adjust his cup. How about ‘ARod – Sexual Exhibitionist’? -or- ‘ARod – Too Big for his Britches?’ That’s a story, no?

Maybe he drives a gas guzzler. How about ‘ARod the Polluter’? I mean…. you guys should dig a little deeper. Certainly there’s SOMETHING you can write about!

But lo and behold we DO have a story. The story? There’s NO STORY about ARod. The news is… THERE’s NO NEWS!! That’s something to write about for sure!

Umm, I can feel as negatively as I want to, but why should the Yankees?

  12. D.D. August 21st, 2009 at 8:33 am

What? Pete, you didn’t win any writing awards?

I still like your blog, though.

  13. m shirt August 21st, 2009 at 8:40 am

    Nice congratulations Pete.

Betsy, that Rieber article is good!!

This Blog is terrific with its cast of characters and the puppet master pulling the strings. Congrats on a well deserved recognition, Pete!

Who cares who else gets into the post-season? It’s not like the Orioles, Royals and Nationals are going to be there. If last season taught us anything it’s that making the playoffs IS special and focusing only on winning it all IS counter productive. Just get in…. deal with the details later.

  15. Betsy August 21st, 2009 at 8:43 am

Now here’s a good article, lol:

Congratulations, Pete. This blog is the first stop for any true Yankees fan looking for the “real” happenings. Keep up the great work!

  17. Brian NYY August 21st, 2009 at 8:53 am

    Congrats Pete!

This is the best blog around (in any category).

  18. upstate kate August 21st, 2009 at 8:53 am

    Betsy- great article on AJ.

You never know what will happen in the play offs, so there is no use hoping to face a team you have better luck against in the regular season. Cleveland showed us that.

Congrats Pete…I agree with other comments, best blog out there!

To the comments on ARod/lightning rod being a production of the press….Personally I see it more from the perspective that the attention ARod receives is a result of the contract. He got the big money and that caused people to pay attention. The media starts covering him and people eat it up, so they keep covering him. Add to that, he frequently comes across poorly and needs to put his foot in his mouth and so he gets more attention (kind of like watching a train-wreck, eveyone does it so it gets covered more)…I like ARod, I think he hurts his image because he tries so hard to be liked that it doesn’t work…but he had to know attention would come with the contract and he wasn’t prepared to handle it. add to that he’s made some very bad decisions that became public and you have what you have with him…sure the media is part to blame for the loads of attention, but no more than the contract, the fans the eat it up or ARod himself. Just remember when the ARod stuff was going on this blog had some really high post counts and a lot of traffic. If that weren’t the case, the coverage wouldn’t be there as much.

Tony Mass. giving the Yankees some credit. With a little RS bias thrown in.

  23. Rick August 21st, 2009 at 9:05 am

The only things that can make a Yankee feel better is to have Brett Garner and his speed back soon and to have another lefthander out of the bullpen. Not so sure Marte is the answer.
10 more days and the rosters can expand.

  24. Sony August 21st, 2009 at 9:07 am

    Awesome job, Pete.

Read the article. In regards to not trading for Cliff Lee and Ben Francisco, Phils stole them from Cleveland, and Shapiro could have gotten better talent from us, which wouldn’t have impacted our minor league growth in the least.
Not sure if Cashman was allowed the opportunity to better the Phillies offer, or if Shapiro just wanted him traded to the NL.

  27. m shirt August 21st, 2009 at 9:33 am

LOL anyone reading the comments on the Mazz article? They’re working themselves up into quite the frenzy in Boston!

Regarding the Jeter “chain of thought”:

I was looking at Jeter’s career Hits stats. He currently has 2696 hits- 60th highest career total. If he were to get just 40 more hits this year (He’ll probably do 50+) he’ll have 2736, moving him to 50th overall- Wow!

In those next 40 hits, in addition to passing Lou Gehrig, he will also pass Goose Goslin, Tony Perez, Roberto Alomar, Rusty Staub, Bill Buckner, Dave Parker, Billy Williams, Doc Cramer, and Omar Vizquel.

PHIL- How about a contest to guess when Jetes will pass “The Iron Horse”??

  37. Fan mail from some flounder August 21st, 2009 at 11:42 am

OldYanksFan – Bingo! Couldn’t have said it better myself. Borden uses every possible reference to anything deemed negative by the sports media in the article, a complete rehash of old tabloid “news”, then ends pretty much with the admission: “I’ve got nothing to write about today, but having “A-Rod” in the title should be good enough”. How sad. Is Sam having an affair with Selena Roberts perchance?

  38. Mark in Rhode Island August 21st, 2009 at 12:01 pm

Congratulations! We’re happy to see you get the recognition.

  39. Manton August 21st, 2009 at 12:24 pm

Congrats, Pete – don’t know what I’d do without this place at this point.

  40. Ed H. August 21st, 2009 at 1:13 pm

Congratulations, Pete, and to Sam and Rick too.

Pete, you have pioneered something special here and it has been great to see the blog grow and gain recognition. You have done outstanding work. There is nothing like this in the Yankee universe. This blog is my absolute favorite.
