Game 124: Yankees at Red Sox, Part II

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Aug 23, 2009 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Here is the second game post.

UPDATE, 10:03 p.m.: We’re through five at an angry Fenway Park. Yankee 7-3 as they have belted four home runs off Josh Beckett.

UPDATE, 10:17 p.m.: Poor defense has cost CC two runs so far and assorted extra pitches. It’s only 7-4 and he’s at 104 pitches. The Yankees are going to have to get some big outs out of their bullpen. This one is far, far from over. Not at this park.

UPDATE, 10:21 p.m: Bad news: The grounds crew is poised near the tarp. There must be some bad weather coming. At least it’s a official game. No rain as of now.

UPDATE, 10:36 p.m.: It’s the well-rested Phil Hughes with two down in the seventh. CC’s line: 6.2 8 4 3 0 8. Not too bad given the poor defense behind him. It well could have been two runs. He threw 80 of his 118 pitches for strikes.

UPDATE, 11:13 p.m.: The force is strong in young Hughes. Last 35.1 innings: 5 ER, 22 H, 45 K.

Back later with clubhouse reaction.

    Good people of LoHud-

I am relocating to the couch for a bit for Mad Men. Please watch over the Yanks while I am gone and take good care of them.

I will be checking in from time to time!!!

Everybody has a player that they love to bash. Pete, is yours Cano? Are you holding him to too high of a standard? He’s only been playing for five years, and, while he’s been more than serviceable at second for the Yankees, when compared to the rest of the Yankees infield, he’s not going to hold a candle to them. While he’s shown flashes of brilliance, they’re probably just that at this point. I’m not saying that you shouldn’t get on the guy, but you hammer on this cat every day. Just say that you think that the Yankees could do better with somebody else at second. We get the idea.

    ———–

bravo chris. but pete is part of the media. he understands that there are certain trigger points to get more people to post on this blog. arod is the obvious #1 guy to critique b/c the fanbase is polarized towards him. the #2 guy is cano. so who knows what pete really believes but he does know how to get people to respond.

  4. Laura August 23rd, 2009 at 10:06 pm

The boys are hitting Beckett hard.

  5. Tunnel Man August 23rd, 2009 at 10:06 pm

    Bomb, Bomb, Bomb..

    Bomb, Bomb, Boston! :)

  6. sunny615 August 23rd, 2009 at 10:06 pm

Vmart should definitely stick to first place… if the Sox decide to use him as their primary catcher next year, they’re in trouble

  7. Nick in SF in Larkspur August 23rd, 2009 at 10:06 pm

We now have an official game. 5 complete innings with the home team trailing. With the home team ahead, 4.5 innings would be sufficient.

  8. SJ44 August 23rd, 2009 at 10:06 pm

Swisher has hit the ball on the screws all weekend. Just unlucky.

  9. djsunyc August 23rd, 2009 at 10:06 pm

so there’s a controversial swing call by the homeplate ump and espn doesn’t even show a replay of it? what shoddy production…

  10. Zach in Port Jeff August 23rd, 2009 at 10:07 pm

The ball was hit directly at him. Good play…but they dont need to drool over him now.

  11. The Phranchise August 23rd, 2009 at 10:07 pm

No fastballs to Cano over the plate.

Swish looking like the May Swish

  16. Trevor August 23rd, 2009 at 10:08 pm

Could would have 100 rbi now if only he could hit with risp.

  17. djsunyc August 23rd, 2009 at 10:08 pm

    robbie cano’s #1 fan = joseph morgan…

  18. Trevor August 23rd, 2009 at 10:08 pm

    Cano

  19. CB August 23rd, 2009 at 10:08 pm

CC has the lead and knows what to do with it. 9 pitch out and he made the top of the order look silly.

I honestly don’t understand this idea that he’s not pitching well.

He’s thrown 6 innings and has 6Ks. I believe the Sox lead all of the majors in walks drawn as a team.

    CC has not walked anyone.

He’s given up 2 earned runs and the 3rd run was an unearned as a run can be.

He had a bad second inning because the Sox hitters were sitting outside adn CC didn’t adjust quickly enough.

He’s throwing a very strong game on the road so far.

  20. Laura August 23rd, 2009 at 10:08 pm

Morgan continuing the Cano love fest. At least somebody is giving Robbie some love.

  21. JoeT 28 in 10!! JIM WHO???? August 23rd, 2009 at 10:08 pm

Joe Morgan showing Robbie some love …. John Miller breaks it up talking about the “phantom play”

  22. Rishi August 23rd, 2009 at 10:08 pm

    uh – that was a quick inning…

  23. Matt August 23rd, 2009 at 10:08 pm

    i love it… “angry Fenway”…. so true!

i lived in Boston for 12 years.

I listened to “YOU DID STEROIDS” chants every time Giambi or Sheff came up to the plate.

Now those same folks are saying “well, everyone did it” whenever you mention Big Phony David Ortiz or Manny Being (Helped BY Steroids) Manny.

I guess they have something to be “angry” about after all:)

  24. djsunyc August 23rd, 2009 at 10:09 pm

    Trevor August 23rd, 2009 at 10:08 pm

Could would have 100 rbi now if only he could hit with risp.

    ———

if he could hit with RISP’s, then cano would be batting 2nd or 5th, an allstar and in the discussion for MVP.

SJ, I’m calling for 7-4. Trader, I think we will definitely see CC for 7.

  26. The Phranchise August 23rd, 2009 at 10:09 pm

Chances of hearing the Manny Delcarmen story for the umth teen time this season = 100%

  27. Shdw August 23rd, 2009 at 10:09 pm

CC is not pitching badly at all. Boston has just got 2 runs off first pitch swings and fouled off a TON of pitches

  28. CB August 23rd, 2009 at 10:09 pm

Beckett got through that inning but once again the yankees squared him up.

Beckett was very lucky Swisher and Cano hit the ball at the defense.

  29. OKI/DAVE August 23rd, 2009 at 10:09 pm

I can’t wait to Gardner back into action to give Melky a rest and somemore of a competitive edge when he’s playing.

  30. Laura August 23rd, 2009 at 10:09 pm

That broke our string of scoring every inning. We’ll just have to start a new string in the next one.

  31. MG August 23rd, 2009 at 10:09 pm

this whole fixation on the pitcher-catcher relationship and becoming a problem is such crap it’s ridiculous. If you think any catcher is really going to control where a pitcher throws the ball then you’ve never played the game. The pitcher can essentially call and throw every pitch exactly where he wants, it has little or nothing to do with what the catcher wants him to do. The best pitchers, of course, understand the game so well they get completely insync with the catcher early in the game and don’t waste time shaking off signs. It isn’t like every pitcher throws 4 pitches, how many choices are there, 2 or 3?

  32. trisha - OPPC lifetime member and true believer in karma. August 23rd, 2009 at 10:10 pm

Rish, so far I’ve been on target, hey?

    May it last.

    :)

  33. Loves to Face Premium August 23rd, 2009 at 10:10 pm

How long ’til Gardner gets back. Melky doesn’t seems to have the fire in his belly.

  34. zmaster August 23rd, 2009 at 10:10 pm

melky has got to hustle on that grounder to second.. its not such a big deal to ask…

  35. Psyluk August 23rd, 2009 at 10:10 pm

Guys, you’re forgetting that Morgan and Cano are card carrying Major League 2nd basemen. Stick up for your own :)

  36. The Phranchise August 23rd, 2009 at 10:11 pm

Gardner is what another week until the cast comes off.

Uggggghhhhh who was that kid again?

  37. Laura August 23rd, 2009 at 10:11 pm

I like how they are showing BOS highlights. How about some Yankees highlights?

  38. DT - OPPC member (blood type - Positive) August 23rd, 2009 at 10:11 pm

Cano will always polar opinions about his effort.

Drew is the same way in Boston. You won’t see a lot of emotion. You won’t see anger. That bothers some people.
(Has Cano ever been tossed from a game?)

Paul O’Neill he is not. Just accept him for what he does.
He’ll hit over .300, he’ll hit more homers than your average 2B, and his defense will be better than average.

Will he screw up sometimes? Yes. Will he appear to not hustle sometimes? Yes. In the long run – the good will out weight the bad.

    You mean, Manny DelCAAAAAHmen?

  40. Tunnel Man August 23rd, 2009 at 10:11 pm

2 consecutive bad outtings by Beckett.

He gave up 7 runs in 5 1/3 to Toronto.

And now he gave up 7 runs in 6 to the Yanks.

    Time to PANIC Boston! :)

  41. Rishi August 23rd, 2009 at 10:11 pm

I mean really – can they stop showing replays that old! if they are going to show stuff, show recent stuff

  42. JoeT 28 in 10!! JIM WHO???? August 23rd, 2009 at 10:11 pm

Since the Yankees are winning John Miller demanded the Chase Wright highlights

  43. JFK August 23rd, 2009 at 10:11 pm

Cano has been having a great year. He made two errors it happens but it wasn’t because of lack of hustle.

  44. OKI/DAVE August 23rd, 2009 at 10:11 pm

I’m wondering that too. Will Gardner have to play some rehab games or not?

  45. trisha - OPPC lifetime member and true believer in karma. August 23rd, 2009 at 10:11 pm

MG, no need to even go there. We kind of agreed we would leave that topic until at least after the game (or next Thursday if you want to wait for the next AJ-Posada matchup.)

    :)

That is probably part of where the love comes from.

  48. yada yada yada August 23rd, 2009 at 10:12 pm

going into the 6th tonight, Beckett had been scored on in 10 consecutive innings.

    Josh is hitting The Wall.

    Goodbye, blue sky.

  49. Yankee Trader August 23rd, 2009 at 10:12 pm

This will be the inning to determine if we get another inning out of CC-Youklis, Bay, Lowell

  50. John August 23rd, 2009 at 10:12 pm

comeon cc, lets hold it here

  51. Nick in SF in Larkspur August 23rd, 2009 at 10:12 pm

CB, I’m with you, I think CC is doing very well. It also happens that the Sox have taken a pretty smart approach and have been successful in driving up his pitch count, yet he’s still winning the war (knock on wood).

As well as someone might be pitching, sometimes the other team has a say in the action too. (case in point: Youk just now  )

  52. sunny615 August 23rd, 2009 at 10:12 pm

    crap… i hate Pukilis

  53. Luds August 23rd, 2009 at 10:13 pm

Come on CC, get through this inning.

  54. Joe from Long Island August 23rd, 2009 at 10:13 pm

Is this another example of Beckett being an ace?

  55. Rachel August 23rd, 2009 at 10:13 pm

CC has to find a way to get them threw this inning. The last inning was his only easy one. In this game CC has thrown too many good strikes over the plate like the one just to Youk. They know exactly where to look.

  56. jennifer August 23rd, 2009 at 10:13 pm

What was the point of ESPN showing the 4 consecutive homeruns. That was so wrong.

  57. S.A.--Serenity Now August 23rd, 2009 at 10:14 pm

    come on CC.

  58. MG August 23rd, 2009 at 10:14 pm

trisha, I only mentioned it because ESPN once again brought it up with Beckett and his catchers. I’ve been watching and playing baseball since 1953 and somehow never heard it mentioned until this year.

  59. vtyankeefan-the original!! August 23rd, 2009 at 10:14 pm

  60. rconn23 August 23rd, 2009 at 10:14 pm

Seven runs won’t be enough in Fenway. We’ve seen this before. Sabbathia can’t fall apart here.

  61. The Phranchise August 23rd, 2009 at 10:14 pm

CC needs to get Bay here. Do not put other runners on.

  62. Abdababdaserser August 23rd, 2009 at 10:15 pm

    “Rishi August 23rd, 2009 at 10:11 pm

That is just typical ESPeeN waxing nostalgic. Dreaming and hoping of it happening again.

  63. The Phranchise August 23rd, 2009 at 10:15 pm

    Nice pitch. Beauty.

  64. Zach in Port Jeff August 23rd, 2009 at 10:16 pm

    Fuhgettaboutit.

    FROM LAST THREAD:

Oh, and thank you all for the well wishes. Its been a painful weekend, but a series win (and some prescribed pain meds) certainly made it more endurable.

  66. PL August 23rd, 2009 at 10:16 pm

    horrendous defense

  67. Pel August 23rd, 2009 at 10:16 pm

    W T F ALREADY!?!?

  68. Patrick August 23rd, 2009 at 10:16 pm

You aren’t bashing Cano, Pete. You just made a comment that in my opinion was silly. One bad day means he isn’t a smart ballplayer and doesn’t hustle. That is not accurate and seems like you are overreacting.

  69. The Phranchise August 23rd, 2009 at 10:16 pm

Come on guys. Outfielders are slow to the ball. Dammit

  70. Shdw August 23rd, 2009 at 10:16 pm

  71. Donnie - Will Meet Jim Rice Under the O'Neill Banner August 23rd, 2009 at 10:16 pm

  72. John August 23rd, 2009 at 10:16 pm

    what the frig

why is it that every single time they play here they are sloppy

  73. Trevor August 23rd, 2009 at 10:16 pm

Come on this defense is terrible tonight. Catch the ball.

  75. trisha - OPPC lifetime member and true believer in karma. August 23rd, 2009 at 10:16 pm

    MG – ah. Gotcha.

Now I’d like the rain to come and not stop.

I like this guy’s punchout call. It’s like the hitters hang their heads in shame and walk away – unless it’s the elf, Pukey, Ellsbury or Victor Martinez! They stand there and fight.

(A 4th Sux run might be on its way.)

  76. djsunyc August 23rd, 2009 at 10:17 pm

Bad play by Jeter, Damon and A-rod. CC is getting no help out there today…

  79. Rachel August 23rd, 2009 at 10:17 pm

DAMN…How many balls are just going to drop in this game?!! They need to get the bullpen up. We don’t want CC to completely lose it in this inning.

  84. DT - OPPC member (blood type - Positive) August 23rd, 2009 at 10:17 pm

The Yankees defense is playing like it is Wrigley Field.

  91. John August 23rd, 2009 at 10:18 pm

if the yanks know how to catch a ball, the score is 7-2

  92. trisha - OPPC lifetime member and true believer in karma. August 23rd, 2009 at 10:18 pm

I was just guessing at the final score when I said 7-4.

    I certainly won’t mind if it’s 15-4!

  93. Matt August 23rd, 2009 at 10:18 pm

Another run allowed by allowing a guy to take an extra base he had no chance of taking otherwise. Nobody covering 3rd, or Youkilis doesn’t even think of advancing, and guess what? The extra base results in a sac fly and a run. Gotta be aware of the situation.

  94. CB August 23rd, 2009 at 10:18 pm

The defense has just killed CC tonight. Just awful.

  95. Zach in Port Jeff August 23rd, 2009 at 10:18 pm

    Another gift run.

Too much baseball left to play.

  96. C August 23rd, 2009 at 10:18 pm

This has been a terribly played series…

  97. JFK August 23rd, 2009 at 10:19 pm

Another bad defensive play that cost the yankees a run. They are playing with fire.

  98. terpbomber August 23rd, 2009 at 10:19 pm

Those pesky defensive miscues always comes back to haunt ya. At least C.C. is staying focused despite all that.

  99. MG August 23rd, 2009 at 10:19 pm

there are some strange things going on at Fenway tonight. I’m watching the game with 2 close friends who are Sox fans and we have been in shock at some of the balls that have dropped in, including the bloop hit by Damon a couple of innings ago.

  100. Scorpio August 23rd, 2009 at 10:19 pm

Should this be CC’s last inning? he’s getting hit.

  101. yada yada yada August 23rd, 2009 at 10:19 pm

  104. Patrick August 23rd, 2009 at 10:19 pm

Yes it has been. However, if the Yankees win I can forgive them :)

    gutty performance

  109. Trevor August 23rd, 2009 at 10:19 pm

The only explanation for the sloppiness is maybe cause they’re at the end of a very long road trip?
Could be a factor. Thankfully tomorrow is an off day.

  110. Brandon...I'M AWESOME!... Getting ready to buy the Marky Mark MVP MIXTAPE Vol.1 August 23rd, 2009 at 10:20 pm

Got to give it to CC he’s pitching his ass off tonight.

  111. Rob B August 23rd, 2009 at 10:20 pm

I don’t know why so many people think that a pitching duel is coming when Beckett pitches against the Yankees. Have any of you looked at the Yankee BA against this guy? Only two guys are below .250 before tonight (Molina and, , Teixeira). As a team, the Yankees have a .286 career average against Beckett.

    I fear Lester more.

  112. Scorpio August 23rd, 2009 at 10:20 pm

We need more runs, 7 just doesn’t feel like it’s enough.

  113. kimoinsd August 23rd, 2009 at 10:20 pm

How big was that A-rod bomb?

  114. Patrick August 23rd, 2009 at 10:20 pm

CC kind of got hosed there. He’s pitched better than 6 ip 3 er

  115. John August 23rd, 2009 at 10:20 pm

cc should start throwing his sinker because it is clear that the guys cant catch a ball tonight. I mean I can understand the cano one, but seriously. Lowell’s ball is a routine pop up, the fact that someone had to dive for it is just sad

  116. djsunyc August 23rd, 2009 at 10:20 pm

does espn really have to use those onfield up close and personal cameras? these guys are on the field, playing a big time game, with big time dollars invested and you want to put a camera 2 feet away from them? why?

  117. Rishi August 23rd, 2009 at 10:20 pm

how about some Yankee hits/runs here…

  118. S.A.--Serenity Now August 23rd, 2009 at 10:20 pm

CC is pitching to contact. He knows his count is high. He isn’t trying to K guys, just get them out. I think he has one more inning. It’s a key one. Get the SS, then a chance to keep Ellsbury off the base paths and Pedroia. Then the big bats, but less likely to keep a rally up. Keep the pesky guys off.

  120. Shdw August 23rd, 2009 at 10:21 pm

I still remember the last CC game at Fenway. I can’t watch the game slip way at the very end again

  121. Rachel August 23rd, 2009 at 10:21 pm

So far 2 gift runs and counting. The Yanks are going to have to score at least 2 more runs. It seems like every inning they get 1 back.

  122. SJ44 August 23rd, 2009 at 10:21 pm

The defense has cost him him 2 runs and 25 pitches.

7 isn’t enough with so many guys unable to catch the ball tonight.

    They need more runs.

  123. CB August 23rd, 2009 at 10:21 pm

“This is unreal…CC please don’t give them any more runs.”

What’s the guy supposed to do? Throw the pitch and then run out to the outfield to catch pop flies?

There’s literally only so much a pitcher can do.

The red sox have hit 1-2 balls hard since the second inning.

CC did a great job there only letting the one run score.

The defense has been terrible tonight. And that’s the team’s defense.

  124. JZ August 23rd, 2009 at 10:21 pm

  130. RalphieD (OPPC) August 23rd, 2009 at 10:21 pm

i really dont think the ball damon layed out for was “supposed” to be caught…hes not that good of a left fielder…it was no routine play

on another note..CC has pitched much better than his line would say…some dinks have hurt him and some questionable defense

  131. JFK August 23rd, 2009 at 10:22 pm

CC at 107 pitches he should of been out of the inning without giving up a run. I would bring him back out in the 7th.

  132. Joe from Long Island August 23rd, 2009 at 10:22 pm

With luck, Beckett will still be pitching, and the bats can make amends for some of the poor D.

So many bloop hits, Boston isn’t making much good contact off CC

  138. yada yada yada August 23rd, 2009 at 10:22 pm

It’s The Soft Parade for Boston tonight.

Are the Yanks staying at Morrison Hotel?

  139. Matt August 23rd, 2009 at 10:23 pm

That has to be CC’s last inning. He was falling behind on a lot of the hitters and looked like he was having trouble locating his fastball. Girardi has to realize when his guy is tiring and get him out of there before they start rallying.

107 pitches in these situations is a lot. He’s had guys on base almost every single inning and has had to make a ton of pressure pitches. Not all pitch counts are equal.

  140. Rachel August 23rd, 2009 at 10:23 pm

So does Hughes or Robertson start the 7th or do you go batter to batter with CC in the 7th? He has worked very hard in this game. Who knows how much he has let in the tank, probably not much. He is at 107 pitches.

  141. Zach in Port Jeff August 23rd, 2009 at 10:23 pm

4 routine plays blown in 6 innings. That has hurt CC more than anything.

Make 4 routine plays, and CC is ahead 7-2 and is at about 80 pitches.

“What’s the guy supposed to do? Throw the pitch and then run out to the outfield to catch pop flies?”

CB, if Bugs Bunny could do it, why not CC?
On another note, could the bad defense tonight be a result of a team that’s at the end of a 10-game road trip in 11 days? I know it sounds like an excuse, but for a team that has played good defense this year, tonight is off the charts bad for them.

  155. Zach in Port Jeff August 23rd, 2009 at 10:25 pm

  158. CB August 23rd, 2009 at 10:26 pm

CC has thrown 107 pitches tonight.

    73 have been strikes.

    34 balls.

So he’s throwing 68% of his pitches for strikes.

The red sox have drawn more walks than any other team in baseball.

To throw 68% strikes against the Sox is rembarkable.

The key bat this inning is the first one as always. Must put Gonzales away. But I am sure Johnny will once again talk about him hitting one out which is hysterical. Yesterday’s homer was embarrassing and out of the ordinary. That’s like saying Molina can hit balls out of the park too.

“The pop up play looked to me (and there was a replay) that Tex either did not have it lined up or the ball was taking a turn more toward second. It looked like Cano read that and came in to make a play Tex was not going to make. He overran it just a bit. It was not for lack of effort that that play got bungled. IMO.”

    Doreen,

    I completely agree with you.

The idea that cano dropped that ball from lack of hustle or focus is just not supported by what happened during that play.

Now he still needed to make that play and should have.

But fundamentally, Tex screwed that play up as well. It was a much easier play for him but he just kept back peddling and never caught up to the ball.

  187. Rachel August 23rd, 2009 at 10:31 pm

    Zach in Port Jeff,

In AJ’s case it’s not what’s happening behind him. It’s usually ump related.

In fact, I think AJ’s been pretty good about picking up his teammates on errors. He seems to bear down after they occur.

But I know what you mean.

And Sterling’s going on and on and on about the errors, saying CC’s a good guy, but he should be irritated by the defense tonight. I’m like, “Dude, they’ve given him 7 runs. He’s not irritated.”

  275. Nick in SF in Larkspur August 23rd, 2009 at 10:41 pm

I think the move made perfect sense (and I started typing this post just before Keebler made that out). Let CC get the #9 hitter and the sole lefty in the lineup out and then bring in Hughes to get Pedroia.

  276. The Phranchise August 23rd, 2009 at 10:41 pm

    Jeez Swish. Yikes.

Pedroia once again can’t get a hit off Hughes. Now they have the power hitters next inning, but giving up a homer is a run, not more. Nobody with speed on the basepaths. Big inning. Also means Mo may see the end of the lineup in the ninth.

  286. CB August 23rd, 2009 at 10:43 pm

I’d like to hear from all of those Yankee fans that were insistent that CC isn’t a true “ace.”

That he’s no Josh Beckett because CC is a good pitcher but not a great one because his only real value is being an “innings eater.”

    6 2/3 IP/ 3ER/8 Ks/ 0 BB on the road.

His defense was awful tonight and CC picked up the rest of the players behind him and put them on his back making up for their mistakes time and time again.

And on the other side of the diamong – Josh Beckett – the guy so many Yankee fans fawn over and bow down to as the greatest “big game” pitcher since Whitey Ford puts up a completely gutless performance.

The Red Sox are 1.5 games up in the wild card and are fighting for their lives.

The Sox are just starting a run of 25 games during which they will be playing 20 games against teams that either would make the playoffs if the season ended now or are still in the thick of the playoff hunt.

Every game for them right now is a playoff game. And given how shakey their rotatin is they must win every time Beckett and Lester take the mound.

And Beckett gives up 7 earned runs against the Yankees at Fenway.

It was pretty clear tonight who the “ace” was.

  287. Carl August 23rd, 2009 at 10:43 pm

have you all discussed this yet?

…According to the report, Rice laughed hard when told his comments were taken by many as jealousy toward today’s high-paid players.

“You ask anyone who was at that speech, they’ll tell you that I talked about how we were the ones who helped those guys get the money they’re getting today. I went through three strikes. I was once one of the highest paid guys,” Rice said.

“I don’t resent that. The money has gone up, and it’s still going up.”

Jeter didn’t think it was funny, however.

“I didn’t know I was like that,” he said to reporters. “That would be a first for me.”

Later on Friday night, after the Yankees routed the Red Sox 20-11, a game in which Jeter and Rodriguez combined for seven hits, three RBIs and five runs scored, A-Rod deferred to the Yankees’ captain when told that Rice said he was misquoted.

“Tell him,” Rodriguez said, referring to Jeter.

    But Jeter wasn’t biting.

“Misquoted?” Jeter said. “How was he misquoted?”

Thankfully Cash didt listen to many people who wanted to trade Matsui last winter. Considering he missed some games for injury and missed 9 NL games in intraleague play, he has had quite a season. Most of his hits are in huge spots like tonight and off quality hurlers

  358. CB August 23rd, 2009 at 10:51 pm

Right field is such a joke at Yankee stadium. What a whiffle ball park. What a joke baseball is in a park that plays this short.

Imagine the great Josh Beckett giving up 5 HR in a single game.

Beckett has struck out 5 guys.

    HR = K.

    Not a good equation.

Now it can’t be that the yankees have an inordinant amount of power.

So it has to be the joke of a ball park they play in.

But it is funny how the “wind tunnell” always has a ticket on their charter flights.

Between the Green Monster and the Pesky Pole, there are a lot more cheap homeruns in Fenway than in the new Yankee Stadium.

Maybe there are so many HR’s in the new YS because the Yankees can rake? There’s a thought.

  370. OKI/DAVE August 23rd, 2009 at 10:52 pm

If the Yankees don’t pick him up next year, don’t you think the Dead Sox would love this guy?

  371. Nick in SF in Larkspur August 23rd, 2009 at 10:53 pm

I didn’t think this was a ‘must-win’ game in any respect, but anytime you can get +114 on the money line with CC starting, that’s a ‘wow, it would be sweeeeeeeet to win this one’ game. ;)

Francona is trying so hard to get Beckett a win, its messes with his ego to lose to the Yanks and CC, so as long as Francona thinks he has a shot he`ll keep Beckett in. Now that Beckett gave up a critical run making it a four run lead, Francona blew that

  381. Nick in SF in Larkspur August 23rd, 2009 at 10:55 pm

Totally out of touch with reality the guy is. Too bad they don’t pay attention to the real game instead of just reading off stats that their flunkies hand to them!

  387. The Phranchise August 23rd, 2009 at 10:55 pm

Francona is trying to save his bullpen. With two quality starters they have gone thru stretches of burning it out. Hence Bowden the other night and claiming Wagner.

Theo should look worried. No one was all that impressed with his minor leaguers this year in trades. We have seen Bowden who was something less than impressive. Tazawa? Bucholz has pitched better of late. Bard getting hit, but has impressive stuff. But in the field. Bay may be gone. They are weak on both sides of the OF. Ortiz is nothing more than Giambi the past few years for us. Victor Martinez is a very good player but he doeesn’t scare me. And they need multilple starters.

It’s so odd how you would just reflexively group Cano and Melky together.

What did defensive mistakes did Melky make together.

Hmmm…. I wonder what else those two guys have in common…

Makes you wonder if Smoltz would have had a HOF career if he had pitched in the AL
    ————————————————

I think GB7 would agree. Smoltz had the best “stuff” from among future HOF’ers Maddux and Glavine. Yes I think he would have thrived in the AL in his prime.

    ————————————————————

No doubt about the talent level of John Smoltz, Trader. One of the best in this generation of pitchers. He had everything going for him but health. He was as close to Bob Gibson or Don Drysdale as there has been as a right handed pitcher. Imagine his numbers with 21 years of relative health. Quite possibly a 300 game winner?

This is an absolutely devastating series for the Sox.

The yankees just continued to step on their throats.

    Tonights game completely erases yesterdays.

Every game is a playoff game for the Red Sox. Every game.

They cannot afford to lose games Beckett starts.

And Beckett put up a completely gutless performance.

The Sox cockiness is at it’s worse when Beckett is pitching.

And the yankees once again took the Red Sox out back and put a whooping on them.

The display of power – at Fenway – was just amazing. And there is no way 5 HR off their “ace” doesn’t leave a huge impression on the Sox.

What a huge, clutch HR by Alex. That was the difference – that was the shot that put the game out of reach and allowed CC to focus on getting quicker outs.

And outside of that second inning CC shut down the Sox. Outside of that one inning there were very, very few hard hit balls off of CC all night.

It was that one inning where CC stayed outside too long. Once CC adjusted the Red Sox didn’t square him up with any frequency.

The yankees needed to win 1 out of 3 in this series.

Instead the yanks take 2 out of 3.

  663. Rachel August 23rd, 2009 at 11:29 pm

  706. Betsy August 23rd, 2009 at 11:41 pm

GF, I don’t think the 8th inning has anything to do with fans wanting Phil to be the future closer. Frankly, I think they have given up on him as a top notch starter…….but that’s no surprise as Yankee fans have no patience.

When fans think of Phil Hughes, they think of the kid struggling in 8/07 to return to form after his injuries; they think of him last year, struggling mightily (while I believe he was suffering from rib injury before the diagnosis). They don’t remember his performance in September of 2009, nor his post-season performance of that year, nor the great progress he showed earlier this year as a starter. His stuff was clearly back – but wait, he has no future as a top starter. It’s sort of sad that some won’t give Phil a chance (same with Joba) to live up to his enormous potential.

He doesn’t have to be as dominant as Sabathia. He only need to throw quality starts consistently.

You win with starting pitching and everyone associated with the organization has said time and time again that Hughes is going back to the rotation next season.

CC also pitched excellent in his first game in Fenway back in June. Unfortunately, he had to go back out there for the 8th when he never should have, because our pen sucked then. He should have left 7 IP, 4 H, 1 ER. But he has more than made up for that these last 2 starts against them.

CC has proven he can beat good teams in hostile environments. Remember when people said he wasn’t an ace? lol

“The sad part is some of these were repeated just within the last 24 hours after yesterday’s game.

    Pathetic.”

    GF,

It’s so true. I said this before – but a big part of the yankee fanbase has a glass jaw.

That’s particularly ironic because it’s completely discordant with this team.

This teams is as far as you can get from a glass jaw.

Yesterday’s game – forgotten. Just erased.

How quickly does the teams toughness show up?

    First pitch to Jeter.

For so long we’ve heard Yankee fans just go on and on and on about the greatness of Josh Beckett.

And his special greatness was because of what he did in “big games.” That’s why he’s unquestionably an “ace.”

CC knocked the stuffing out of the Sox – it’s the third time he’s done that this year – including two games at Fenway.

That first game CC threw at Fenway CC just got left out on the mound running on fumes because the yankees pen was a mess. That’s not on him.

This year the yankees have racked Beckett twice. They just beat the Sox back to back in games the incomparable Beckett started.

    5 HRs. What an ace.

    Big game performance there.

No doubt Sabathia pitched a great game. But Hughes will never be as dominant as CC as a starter. Hughes this year 5.45 era as a starter and 1.31 era as a releiver. I think he had found his role.

    ———-

One bad start against the O’s skewed Hughes’ overall numbers as a starter.

He had a 3.50 ERA in his other 6 starts and the reason why he was put in the bullpen in the first place is because he was throwing the ball so well as a starter.

  719. Abdababdaserser August 23rd, 2009 at 11:45 pm

Miscues? That is a nice way of putting awful errors.

  720. Al August 23rd, 2009 at 11:45 pm

I don’t want Hughes in the 8th inning next year, he should be a starter.

That being said… who is our 8th inning guy next year? Coke? Bruney? Robertson?

Obviously we have a lot of time and an entire winter to figure that out… but Cashman can’t just let that position to untouched and try a committee again. We tried that this year. Even if Melancon or someone has a good September, he needs to find a legit solution.

  721. MG August 23rd, 2009 at 11:46 pm

the Yankees have taken 6 out of 7 from the Sox in August. They’ve done it every way possible, from overpowering pitching with clutch hitting to outslugging to just outlasting them.

It’s a long season, teams that win it all have to find different ways to get it done. That is the hallmark of this Yankees team. They’ve been great all year defensively, tonight was probably the worst game they’ve had all year and still managed to win the game handily. Those of you who want to complain about every inning, every pitch and every event in a long season aren’t making it easy to enjoy the games.

No one knows how good Phil will be. I don’t understand putting limits on his or anyone’s ceiling. How do we know he won’t be a multiple Cy Young award winner in his career? He might, he might not. Suggesting that he shouldn’t be a starter next year because he won’t be CC is silly. Suggesting he can never be a dominant pitcher……..is silly. Can’t we wait and see how things turn out before we decide what Phil can and can’t be? Same thing goes with Joba or any young player/pitcher.

Nice for Phil to get an inning of work tonight – he never pitches anymore.

The White Sox are very much in the race for the AL Central, and they’re throwing Jose Contreras and Freddy Garcia against the Red Sox in the next two games?

It makes me realize just how lucky we Yankee fans are to have a deep pitching staff.

  732. CB August 23rd, 2009 at 11:49 pm

    Randy,

The most amazing part of the game to me was how Varitek could have huddled together with Posada overnight and learned Posada’s magical powers to make pitchers hang curve balls, miss spots and leave their fastball up and over the plate.

How did he master those skills in one day?

How could Varitek turn Josh Beckett into AJ Burnett over night?

Especially when ESPN keeps telling us how much Varitek means to Beckett.

How Beckett’s lousy game in Toronto was definitively due to Varitek being scratched and Martinez starting. Of course Bekett’s terrible pitching was due to Victor Martinez.

What a catcher. The aura of intangibles glows around him.

It’s all his fault for tonights game.

  741. Betsy August 23rd, 2009 at 11:51 pm

Some unusual things in a game, but, maybe the best night a pitcher had was 23 June, 1971 by Phillies right hander….a 9 inning no hitter against a hard hitting Cinncy team….4-0. What made it unusual was that Rick Wise drove in 3 runs with 2 homers. That’s pretty much doing it yourself.

    Amen, CB.

This team is as tough and resilient as any Yankee team we’ve seen since the dynasty years.

They got their asses handed to them yesterday and the came out smoking tonight and hammered the most unbeatable superhero in big games in the major leagues in his own backyard.

The defense this weekend was sloppy and the relief corps wasn’t very good outside of Hughes and Mo.

But you can’t complain about the results. They put the hammer to the Red Sox this weekend and unofficially closed the door to the AL East race.

  768. Rose August 24th, 2009 at 12:00 am

“If it is always 100% the pitchers fault. Then Jorge needs to let Burnett throw whatever pitch he wants and not try to fight him on pitch selection.”

No. Not when the pitcher is making mistakes in judgement.

The Catcher’s responsibility is to help the team win.

If the pitcher is making errors in judgement then the catcher has to try to steer him towards doing the right thing.

The catcher’s job is not to passively sit back there and watch a pitcher beat his head against a cement wall.

AJ Burnett hung one curveball after another yesterday. His curve was awful.

And he wanted to throw it more because he thought he had a good hook.

And Posada is just supposed to sit back there passively as AJ commits suicide out on the mound and buries the team?

He should do that when Joba falls in love with his slider and gets scared to throw his fastball?

That’s what he should be doing to help the team win?

The defense hasn’t been especially good all season and they’ve gotten this far.

But this weekend was especially sloppy – lots of miscommunication on popups that shouldn’t be happening this late in the season.

It doesn’t help their pitchers either – forcing them to throw more unnecessary pitches when the inning should be over.

bottom line the yanks are playing great.

CC is a horse and by far there best starter in 5 years.

also for the bozo’s hughes can dominate in the 8th inning for 1 simple reason it is easier then being a starter you do not give up on a 22 yr old stud as a starter so easily.

Hughes needs to start next year.

Melky needs a day off, Gardner helps they need him back…

ths sux are done, the yanks are winning the division

And calling Hughes is a ‘failed starter’ is a crime against good sense.

  784. Rob B August 24th, 2009 at 12:04 am

After starting out 0-8 vs. the S*x, the Yankees are now 6-9 against them, winning the last two series and 6 out of 7 games. With 3 more games left at the Stadium, it would be very probable to see the season series end at 8-10. Would that be so bad?

And there is even a good chance of the Yankees sweeping the S*x for a 9-9 seasons series. That’s why you can’t get so upset about games in April and May. That’s not to say they aren’t important, but the Yankees have definitely been a second half team the last few years, while the S*x have tended to fade after the AS break.

It’s remarkable how many different ways this team can pummel another.

Tonight their defense was garbage and they gave the sox so many extra outs. Doing that at Fenway is usually a disaster.

Years past – no way they can survive that.

That’s why so many yankee fans reflexively though this was going to wind up a 13-10 game. We’ve seen that movie before.

But now is not like before.

Because now they have an absolute frontline horse out on the mound. They have a guy who can put the team on his back and make up for his teammates mistakes because he has brilliant stuff and an absurdly deep understanding of how to pitch.

And they obviously have so much power up and down the line up that they can have games like this and it’s surprising – but now shocking.

This team hit 5 HR off of Beckett and it’s really not shocking.

    That says alot.

Mo will retire when he’s not effective.
Trevor Hoffman is older than Mo and still going strong.

Mo is in very goodd physical shape.Yankees are stupid enough to force him into retirement,or go to another team.

Fenway was angry tonight,Beckett usually gets bailed out when he gives up runs,by the bats.

Our defense has never been great, improved from previous years, but not great… and the Outfield defense has been horrendous all year.

Jeter and Tex have improved the infield D, but it’s not like we were ever some great defensive team this year. That is not a concern.

  797. trisha - OPPC lifetime member and true believer in Ortiz karma. August 24th, 2009 at 12:11 am

An “ideal” scenario would be for the Yankees to lose all of the games to Texas – of course only if we could assure the Sux would lose all of theirs those same games!

Okay, okay. I don’t want anyone here back in a panic. But I would sure love the result!!!

    ———————————————–

Joe Girardi said on wfan a while back that he doesn’t mind pitchers shaking off the catcher. The pitchers have to throw the pitch with 100% conviction even if it might be the wrong pitch.
Bottom line is Sabathia, Burnett and Joba all prefer throwing to Molina. Jorge has to get on the same page with them instead of fighting with Chamberlain or Burnett during a game that is not very productive to the team.

Comcast SportsNet with a great Beckett stat –

last three starts (including tonight) he gave up 10 homers.
Previous 12 starts – he only gave up 4.

  806. Jake August 24th, 2009 at 12:15 am

Of course the pitcher has to have 100% conviction in his pitch.

However, yesterday, AJ’s curveball was getting smoked. Not fooling anyone. Yet he insisted on throwing it. How was he confident in something that produced poor results everytime he threw it?

  807. Zach in Port Jeff August 24th, 2009 at 12:15 am

Does anyone know what the Yankees record is against the Sox in August, since ’06?

The Boston Massacre 5 game sweep occured in August of ’06. In ’07 I believe they were 5-1 against them. I’m not sure what the record was in ’08 but this year the Yanks are 5-1 against the Sox.

The Red Sox own the Yankees in April, but the Yankees seem to own them in August.

I don’t get why people are worried about the White Sox either.

They won 3 out of 4 games against the Yankees, but that was at home when the Yankees were in the middle of a road trip and hadn’t had an offday for about 2 weeks.

The Nationals also beat us (in conditions that were much more favorable to the Yankees). Would you be worried about facing them again?

The White Sox are a wildcard team.

Floyd has been great lately. Peavy could be a nice boost. The Yanks seem to handle Buehrle well but Danks isn’t too bad.

Thornton is lights out and Jenks is decent.

Throw in a good offense and they make a formidable opponent.

Yanks need not be “scared” on anyone. Other teams need to be scared of the Yanks.

But the White Sox are good enough to take very seriously.

  861. Matt August 24th, 2009 at 1:28 am

According to Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com, “the Red Sox’s chances of landing Mets reliever Billy Wagner are in serious jeopardy.”

There are two main problems: Wagner wants to have the option of leaving after the 2009 season, and the Sox are not willing to guarantee that his 2010 club option will go unexercised. Boston management also wants to have the choice of offering the veteran salary arbitration, an idea to which Wagner’s agent is adamantly opposed. The two sides have about 40 hours to come to an agreement.

  866. JK August 24th, 2009 at 1:49 am

The Redsox will have to pay Papelbon 10M in arbitration this year. He is also their biggest trade piece. The tremendous Redsox minor league system was smoke and mirrors. Bowden & Tazawa have been exposed as having back end starter stuff, Buchholz is 25 now and is still a question mark & their number #1 prospect Lars Anderson has had a horrendous year.
