Yankees and Angels down the stretch

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Aug 24, 2009 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

The race is on for home field advantage in the playoffs. The Yankees are 78-46 and the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, Orange County and Planet Earth are 74-48.

The teams will play four more times head to head. Once at Yankee Stadium on Sept. 14 in a makeup game and three times in Anaheim starting Sept. 21.

Joe Girardi said yesterday that his team will push for home field but not at the expense of making sure his players, especially the pitchers, get the right amount of time off. That makes good sense.

But four games at Yankee Stadium would be a lot more conducive to a World Series berth than four at the House of the Rally Monkey.

Here’s how it looks down the stretch:

Yankees (38 games left): 22 home, 16 away, 23 against teams over .500.

Angels (40 games left): 23 home, 17 away, 26 against teams over. 500

Yankees

Chicago (3)
At Baltimore (3)
At Toronto (4)
Tampa Bay (4)
Baltimore (3)
Los Angeles (1)
Toronto (2)
At Seattle (3)
At Los Angeles (3)
Boston (3)
Kansas City (3)
At Tampa Bay (3)

Angels
Detroit (3)
Oakland (4)
At Seattle (3)
At Kansas City (4)
Seattle (3)
Chicago (3)
At New York
At Boston (3)
At Texas (3)
New York (3)

At Oakland (3)

The Yankees have an edge, I think. The Angels have a murderous 10 game stretch in September when they play the Yankees four times and the Red Sox three times.

I’m not sure I would ever give us an edge over the angels if we still have to play them. I think home field advantage in this instance is a must. There’s just no way we can sit here and conceivably think of beating anaheim in a 7 game series with 4 of those games being played in LA. I understand that this Yankee team is much different and better than that of the last 5 years, but were still 2-4 against them this year. HOME FIELD IS CRITICAL.

    CB,

There were quite a few people who questioned whether or not Santana was a smart move at the time because he lost a few ticks and was giving up a copious amount of homeruns.

Santana would’ve been a good pickup imo (not in hindsight, but at the time), but I was really stuck on the talent that would’ve gone to the Twins.
    ——————————————————-

HFA is of utmost importance. We’re two up in the loss column. If we can take a couple of games at Angel Stadium, it will answer a lot of unnecessary criticism of this team.

We’re 2 up in the loss column and have played 2 more games than them.

Cheering for whomever plays Boston and the Angels from here on out.

  3. jpb1973 August 24th, 2009 at 5:28 pm

In regards to the Johan Santana situation, I’m convinced that he hasn’t been “right” since before we scored 9 runs against him on that Sunday in June. There is going to be hell to pay if he needs Tommy John surgery because it would mean that he won’t be available for 12-15 months and it will mean that the Mets have blown another injury situation. Who will buy tockets to watch them for the rest of this year and into next year.

  4. Rick August 24th, 2009 at 5:28 pm

Our rotation is much better than their rotation.

Our bullpen blows their bullpen away. No more Shields and K-Rod shutting down games.

Both have great offenses though. They have better defense and more speed, we have more power.

On paper, they are not a terrible matchup considering they are built on offense this year rather than pitching like previous years. But they own us, so you have to keep that i mind.

  5. Track Star August 24th, 2009 at 5:29 pm

“Joe Girardi said yesterday that his team will push for home field but not at the expense of making sure his players, ”

What kind of pathetic attitude is that?

The players have all winter to rest. They have 3-4 days after the season ends before the ALDS even starts.

They need to push to the end. We cannot win in LA. We are like what, 6-17 against them in LA since 05? The idea is to get ourselves in the best position to win a WS, not rest guys.

Yeah, we don’t need to make CC throw 120 pitches or make Rivera pitch 3 days in a row or something, but we should not let up until we clinch homefield.

  6. m August 24th, 2009 at 5:31 pm

I have every confidence this team can win on the road. They’ve proven that.

But having last licks at NYS? Priceless.

  7. jvcelt August 24th, 2009 at 5:37 pm

we went up to boston and won… next month hopefully we will go out to la and do the same. let’s see who the better team is. methinks ’tis us/we

  8. RalphieD (OPPC) August 24th, 2009 at 5:37 pm

homefield would be great but girardi is not gonna push his starters (position and pitchers) just to chase the angels….even when we rest players i still think we have a great chance to win

  9. Bronx Jeers August 24th, 2009 at 5:37 pm

    Home field advantage?

Well it’s definitely cool that we’re talking like that.

I think HFA could have helped them out a couple of times.

2005 going to LA for game 5. That’s when Bubba and Sheff sort of collided.

2007 against Cleveland. No midges on River Ave.

  10. Alex August 24th, 2009 at 5:37 pm

Boston is going to beat LA in the ALDS anyway, guarantee it. LA never beats Boston in a big spot. Their offense won’t hit Beckett/Lester. Lackey/Weaver can’t pitch in Fenway. They have no bullpen.

So even if we don’t get homefield, it won’t matter because we would have HFA over BOS. No need to go all out when we don’t need to.

Boston will knock out LA, we will knock out Boston.

  11. OcYankees Fan August 24th, 2009 at 5:38 pm

A couple thoughts as a Yankees fan in exile in the OC.

Vin Scully said it best. When speaking at a local charity event he introduced himself as the broadcast for “The Los Angeles Dodgers of Los Angeles.” Reportedly, Arte Moreno was sitting in the front row, and was properly put in his place by the only person in these parts with the authority to do so. Gotta love Vinny.

I work near the stadium. If the Yankees lose to the Angels, I’ll be forced to endure plush rally monkeys attached to my car, placed in my mailbox, or packaged as gifts. Oh, the humiliation of it all! The stadium is a good place to see a game, but the whole enterprise still has “Disney” written all over it.

It has only been in the last few years that Angel fans attempt to shout down the “lets go Yankees” chant. If they have a couple of poor seasons, the place will be empty again. Angel fans are the most fair weather fans I’ve ever seen.

  12. upstate kate August 24th, 2009 at 5:41 pm

Who says we can’t win in LA? The Angels had the Sox for lunch last year, until the post season, same in ’07. Why shouldn’t we be able to do the same? We have a great team in all categories- starters, relievers, offense, defense. There is no reason to think the Yankees can’t win in LA…its like saying they can’t win at Fenway :)

  13. Wave Your Hat August 24th, 2009 at 5:45 pm

Who says Boston’s going to make the playoffs anyway?

  14. SJ44 August 24th, 2009 at 5:48 pm

    Yeah, some “pathetic attitude”.

Please, have a clue. They may not even play the Angels in the post-season.

It would be patently dumb to blow out players the rest of the year to push for the best record. If it happens, great.

    If not, they will survive.

You will be blown away. Gammons falling over himself to compliment the Yankees (warning, he couldn’t resist one RS WS reference).

But pay very careful attention to what he says about Jeter. It explains a lot about why he was underperforming the last two seasons. And I think you’ll understand that the team is feeding off of Jeter.

Plenty of fans gave up on Phil Hughes because of his August 2007 struggles. Before those injuries, I’m not sure how many fans would have been so eager to give up on him. Michael Kay was actually a prime example of this. Of course he’s not a fan, but he kept saying (and I think Leiter said this, too, which shocked me) that he didn’t see anything special in Phil, etc…..Kay made a daily habit of knocking Phil. I could never understand why people in the game didn’t understand how devastating those injuries were to Phil and how long it took him to recover. Even when he pitched well in September and the post-season, Kay harped on Phil. It wasn’t even just Kay – scouts and experts (like Keith Law) just gave up on him…and these people are in the business!

  27. Shdw August 24th, 2009 at 6:06 pm

IMO (In my opinion) and IMHO (in my honest opinion) are not only on this blog.

Thanks for link on Gammons, who has buried his head in a pillow, and is crying softly…

The nostalgic 2004 revisit all too predictable, lol.

    Could Belicheck deal with Millar?

No, because the former has too high a regard for defense.

Hey Trish – here’s hoping WS run all over Boston.

We didn’t need to, because we pounded them with slug.

  29. Tom in N.J. August 24th, 2009 at 6:07 pm

    IDK?

  30. RyanM August 24th, 2009 at 6:09 pm

Does it really matter? The Red Sox will find a way with their experience to make it into the postseason over Tampa and Texas. And then they will play the Angels in the first round. And then they will beat the Angels in 3 games, maybe 4. So really, the Angels aren’t even a factor.

  31. upstate kate August 24th, 2009 at 6:13 pm

Betsy- then they must have short memories. what about Phil’s almost no-hitter against Texas? What about the fact that he was the only pitcher to have a win against Cleveland in the play offs? I think last years problems were related to 1- too much pressure on him & IPK, 2- no run support in the early games, so he was trying to be perfect, and giving up too many walks as a consequence and 3- pitching to a variety of catchers after Jorge was hurt. A young pitcher needs an experienced catcher behind the plate, or at least one who knows him. It seemed lkie he had a different catcher every time he pitched.

  32. GMAN August 24th, 2009 at 6:25 pm

    Yanks are rolling…don’t worry…be happy!

Only thing that makes baseball tough to watch…
pitchers that walk too many batters!

    Important thing is this…
Yanks are putting together a great season!

im pretty sure kay is a fan. he was born and raised in the bronx..tells numerous stories of games he went to in YS and said it was his dream since he was 10 to be the yankee announcer..i doubt he was lying about all those things..

  34. Betsy August 24th, 2009 at 6:29 pm

Upstate Kate, I think Phil was suffering the effects of the rib injury prior to being diagnosed. That would explain why his command was just so off………I understood the desire for Santana, but Phil at the time was 21 years old and had been the jewel of the farm system. I think fans were so enamored with Joba, also, that Phil became the forgotten one.

  35. Betsy August 24th, 2009 at 6:30 pm

Ralphie, I didn’t mean that Kay is not a fan of the game….but he’s not a Fan capital “F” like you or I. He makes a living in baseball – he really should have known better with some of the comments he made about Phil.

  36. Thatcher August 24th, 2009 at 6:31 pm

Betsy – Would you be complaining about Kay if he said those same things about Joba?

Kay is definitely a Yankee fan which shouldn’t come into play in his ability to do his job properly, but when you’re the Yankee PBP guy and also a radio sports talk host, there is going to be some conflict due to the contrasting job responsibilities.

  59. V Torch August 24th, 2009 at 7:04 pm

White Sox are starting Contreras and Freddy Garcia in their first 2 games against Boston. We get to face those 2 over the weekend too.

  60. Yankee Trader August 24th, 2009 at 7:04 pm

    m-
White Sox are underperforming, because on paper they’re one of the most balanced teams in respect to speed, power, and pitching. IMHO they would be a difficult opponent in the playoffs if Peavy regains his form.

  61. Dave R. August 24th, 2009 at 7:08 pm

In an ALDS series, Detroit is a worse matchup because of their pitching.

White Sox don’t have a pitcher as good as Verlander or Jackson, even if Peavy regains his form. And we’ll face them 3 times in a 5 game series.

In a 7 game series, the White Sox are a worse matchup because their back end of the rotation is better with Danks and Floyd. Plus they have a deep bullpen and a deep lineup.

We have a higher probability of hitting Peavy/Burhlee than we do Verlander/Jackson.

  62. Giuseppe Franco August 24th, 2009 at 7:09 pm

The White Sox are crap. I have no idea why people are scared of them.

They have underperformed all season long.

  63. DMan August 24th, 2009 at 7:13 pm

There is no such thing as a favorable or scary matchup in October.

You would think people would have learned this after years and years of the “underdogs” beating the favorites in short series. Look at us in 2006. Not a person in America thought we’d lose to Detroit. We didn’t just lose, we were non-competitive in the last 2 games.

Anything can happen. Just enjoy the ride, don’t stress.

  64. m August 24th, 2009 at 7:14 pm

    Yankee Trader,

I don’t even know how to respond to that, lol.

I’m of firm belief that Kenny Williams is afraid that Ozzie will torch his house if he changes managers.

I think a new manager would do wonders for that team. They’re much too talented to be 2 games over .500.

I am cheering for the White Sox. The AL Central would be our ALDS opponent if we have the best record and an AL East team grabs the wild card.

  65. Giuseppe Franco August 24th, 2009 at 7:14 pm

    Thanks guys-

I am okay. An old childhood friend of mine died today from cancer. He was actually my first boyfriend and the first boy I ever slow danced with at the 6th grade dance. Our moms were really good friends too. He was only 29 years old. We had lost touch through the years, but I am absolutely heartbroken at this news. Life really sucks sometimes. I can’t even imagine what his mother is going through.

  113. Abdababdaserser August 24th, 2009 at 8:07 pm

While injuries happen with every team, the number of injuries that the Mets have is unbelievable. There doesn’t seem to be a consistent type of injury, and some of it is just plain bad luck, it should be looked at from an organizational stance.

When the Yankees had a string of hamstring/quad injuries they got rid of the conditioning coach. You aren’t going to eliminate the injuries, but a lot of these guys are out for a long time and it makes you wonder if they just aren’t treating them right or addressing the overall problem.

When there are this many things that are going wrong you can’t keep chalking it up to bad luck or karma.

Halladay has seemed to be having troubles since it was announced that they would be fielding offers for him. He isn’t getting great run support, but he hasn’t been as dominating either.

Halladay is probably hoping to get away from the Jays at this point. It will be interesting to see if he gets dealt over the winter or if they keep him to start the season.

There could also be lingering effects from the groin injury. Hughes took a long time till he was back from the hamstring.

  124. Joe from Long Island August 24th, 2009 at 8:19 pm

    Abda…whatever –

I have to think Halladay is still suffering from the lingering effects of his groin injury. It took Hughes almost all year to recover from his hamstring injury. Pitchers really depend on their legs for their mechanics.

Most famous case of this was probably Dizzy Dean. He was absolutely flat out dominant, arguably the best pitcher in baseball, until he hurt his toe in an AllStar game. As a result, he changed his delivery and ruined his arm. He was esentially done at age 28.

I would think Halladay would be back to his standard next season.

  141. Drive 4-5 August 24th, 2009 at 8:26 pm

Wow. Are the White Sox bad. Contreras had the bases loaded with 2 outs and 3 -0 pitch to David Ortiz. They let Ortiz swing away and he hit a soft dribbler down the first base line. Instead of letting Konerko simply pick the ball up and wait for Ortiz in the baseline, Contreras tried to field it and never picked the ball up. One run scored.Contreras then walked the next batter on 4 pitches to score a run. Contreras then tied the game by throwing a wild pitch. Tie game. Lowell then hits a 3 run homer. to give Boston a 7-4 lead

Boston scored their first run when ,with runners on 1st & 3rd and the #9 hitter up with 2 outs, the Red Sox sent the runner from first and purposely got into a rundown. The runner from 3rd just jogged home.

Chicago is a bad team that is poorly managed.

Joe, that very thing that Cash learned from stick is incredibly important. A gun-shy GM is not going to be a good GM. Of course, it helps that the free agents that the Yankees signed are basically solid citizens in addition to being pretty darned talented (unlike the Pavanos and Wrights of the world).

If Halladay is traded to the Red Sox over the winter, they’ll be paying thru the nose in prospects. I wouldn’t worry. They’ll have more pressing salary issues with Bay and Dice-K.

  182. Betsy August 24th, 2009 at 8:45 pm

I would vote for Verlander or Greinke. CC’s been great this month, but before the last few starts, he was not on the radar. I’d like to think a pitcher who’s been great all year would get it…..

  184. Drive 4-5 August 24th, 2009 at 8:46 pm

    Betsy,

Halladay isnt a free agent till after the 2010 season. If Boston wants to give away their entire farm system for a pitcher turning 34, in the long run it’s better for the Yanks IMO.

  185. Betsy August 24th, 2009 at 8:47 pm

actually, up until recently, I would have voted for Beckett. He’s still not out of play for me, but obviously there is a lot of time.

Mo? I worship the guy – he’s my favorite Yankee – but, no. He’ll probably have the Reliever of the Year award named after him when he retires, but before then? I’m afraid he goes awardless. It doesn’t matter, though. The looks on the All-Stars when Mo was pitching means more to me than a Cy Young or an MVP or any other award.

  186. Carl August 24th, 2009 at 8:47 pm

    # Betsy August 24th, 2009 at 8:45 pm

I would vote for Verlander or Greinke. CC’s been great this month, but before the last few starts, he was not on the radar. I’d like to think a pitcher who’s been great all year would get it…..

    What?

  187. EA August 24th, 2009 at 8:49 pm

Would be nice if CC wins it, he has carried us… the best pitcher on the best team in baseball. Pitches better as the season goes on and the games get bigger. That’s what you like to see.

  188. Betsy August 24th, 2009 at 8:49 pm

I suppose that’s true (about giving the farm away from Doc), but man, all I can think about is Doc, Beckett and Lester………that’s total lockdown.

This stretch is a fluke for Doc – he’s either injured or just deflated from all the trade talk and subsequent non-trade. Wow, 8 runs………..this makes the Sox performance against him less imnpressive, lol. Seriously, I feel badly for him – he must be so frustrated. When’s the last time Doc got hammered like this two starts in a row, when he was in the big leagues for the first time?

  189. bru August 24th, 2009 at 8:50 pm

Buerhle has not been good since his no hitter, floyd is very beatable,so is danks.

not one as good as cc

  190. Rockks August 24th, 2009 at 8:50 pm

If CC gets to 20 wins, there is a very good chance he gets it. Has to get that ERA down though, below 3.50.

  191. Drive 4-5 August 24th, 2009 at 8:50 pm

If Grienke played for a decent team, even the Tigers,he have 16 wins easily by now. I think he’s the best in the league this year.

  193. Yankee Trader August 24th, 2009 at 8:51 pm

  200. Alan August 24th, 2009 at 8:54 pm

    Betsy;

The only real trading chip Boston has to offer for Halladay is Papelbon. Their farm system is overrated / overhyped as evidenced by the shellacking that Bowden took from the Yankees and he’s supposedly their top pitching prospect.

  201. Yankee Trader August 24th, 2009 at 8:54 pm

    NL CY Young- Chris Carpenter?
    NL MVP- Albert Pujols?
    NL representative in WS- Cardinals?

  202. Betsy August 24th, 2009 at 8:54 pm

Erica, New York magazine raked the Yankees over the coals in ST…..my mother gets the mag, but I won’t read anything Yankee oriented in it anymore, lol

  203. RalphieD (OPPC) August 24th, 2009 at 8:55 pm

id hope halladay’s struggles are from an injury and not because he has given up like some people think…it would be a real shame if the guy gives up on his team after not being traded..its not his teammates fault hes still there

  204. NC Scott August 24th, 2009 at 8:55 pm

CC’s rough April might have buried him in the CY Young chase… it doesn’t matter though. He can take pride in knowing he was the reliable stud ace on the best team in the league.

  205. Betsy August 24th, 2009 at 8:55 pm

Alan, you could be right, though there is Bucholz, Bard and Anderson. It’s not something I’m thinking about right now though……….just not looking forward to the whole process all over again.

  206. Laura - I like this new Alex! He's a keeper. August 24th, 2009 at 8:56 pm

Doc probably doesn’t have his heart into pitching this season. Look at what the guy has been through. Look at the team he has playing behind him. He’s probably thinking “Why should I bring my A level stuff for these scrubs?”.

  207. Gary August 24th, 2009 at 8:56 pm

Let Greinke have the CY Y oung… Sabathia can win the NLCS or WS MVP instead :D

  208. Betsy August 24th, 2009 at 8:57 pm

Ralphie, I would never suggest Doc willingly gave up…just that subconsciously the non-trade could have affected him. Doc has way too much integrity to ever mail anything in – he just wouldn’t do it.

  209. RalphieD (OPPC) August 24th, 2009 at 8:57 pm

im not saying that CC wins the CY young but its not about being great the whole year…its where your at when the season is over…usually you have to be great the whole year to win it but sometimes you start slow and go on a tear

  210. hey kelvin says August 24th, 2009 at 8:58 pm

    NL CY YOUNG- Lincecum/Carpenter

NL MVP- Albert Pujols(without a doubt)

    AL CY YOUNG- Greinke/Verlander/Sabathia

    AL MVP- Tex/Mauer/Jeter

I only mentioned Sabathia because he is on a winning team, and he usually gets stronger in second half and competing well lowering his ERA and getting more K’s.

But again Verlander and Greinke are the top two for AL Cy’s in my opinion.

    What ya think Betsy?

  211. bru August 24th, 2009 at 8:58 pm

i doubt the cardinals can get by the phillies.

  212. Betsy August 24th, 2009 at 8:58 pm

Ralphie, I didn’t mean to suggest that Doc willingly gave up – he’s got way too much integrity for that. I just mean that subconsciously the non-trade could have affected him. If it’s the groin injury, boy that must have been a bad one.

  213. Spyder August 24th, 2009 at 8:58 pm

Come on… the guy almost gets to go to a stud contender like Boston or Philly and even the Angels made a late play. It seemed inevitable he was finally going to be playing meaningful games. He was probably counting down the minutes to the deadline and the rug got pulled from out under him.

Can’t be easy to mentally re-adjust to pitching in irrelevant Toronto.

  214. Giuseppe Franco August 24th, 2009 at 8:58 pm

Greinke isn’t going to win the Cy Young.

His ERA is still outstanding but he’s not going to have enough wins and his team sucks.

  215. RalphieD (OPPC) August 24th, 2009 at 8:59 pm

  216. hey kelvin says August 24th, 2009 at 9:01 pm

GF that’s why I mentioned Verlander or Sabathia.

Both on contending teams and are getting stronger during the second half.

  217. Betsy August 24th, 2009 at 9:02 pm

Ralphie, that’s true……and if CC’s #s are worthy, then I sure hope he wins it. I don’t spend much time worrying about awards…

Kelvin, those are fine choices….I’d like to see Carpenter win over Lincecum, but I doubt that will happen.

  218. Abdababdaserser August 24th, 2009 at 9:03 pm

That groin injury that Halladay had probably limits the way he can drive off the ball.

Boston’s prospects are probably not too enticing for the Jays. Given the way Halladay is having troubles right now you have to think that it will make it less likely to trade him for a great package this winter.

I think they will wait till the season gets underway in any event.

  219. Matt August 24th, 2009 at 9:04 pm

Buchholz has really turned the corner this year and has become a cog in Boston’s rotation. He’d be their #3 starter if the playoffs started today.

His value is going to be sky-high this winter if they decide to trade him.

  220. miggs August 24th, 2009 at 9:04 pm

    What are you talking about.

Ever think maybe Halladay is turning 34 and starting to decline? Has that even entered into your mind?

That must be a joke to think Halladay is “letting down” because he wasn’t traded. Its just complete crap. This guy has pitched in Toronto his entire career, many years far away from playoff contention.

Guys like Doc have a certain pride when they take the mound. He’s giving 100%.

Now maybe its the groin or a result of compensating for it. But he’s also entering his mid 30s with a lot of miles on his arm.

God forbid if the Sox get him! Something else to fret about for the next couple of months.

  221. RS August 24th, 2009 at 9:06 pm

Boston scored 8 of their 9 runs on two outs.

  222. Betsy August 24th, 2009 at 9:06 pm

Matt, Bucholz has not pitched well tonight……he looks good only in comparison to Contreras, lol

  223. Betsy August 24th, 2009 at 9:07 pm

Sox are hitting the heck out of the ball…….so much for their weak offense that everyone was talking about….

  224. Giuseppe Franco August 24th, 2009 at 9:08 pm

The Red Sox need Buchholz for themselves. Why would they trade someone like that when their rotation has stunk for the last two months?

They have a ton of question marks after Lester and Beckett.

Matsuzaka is a huge question mark and Wakefield can’t pitch forever.

They need to keep guys like Buchholz. It doesn’t make a lot of sense for them to trade him, especially since the upcoming FA market is terrible.

  225. Giuseppe Franco August 24th, 2009 at 9:10 pm

    Betsy August 24th, 2009 at 9:07 pm

It amazes me how people still care about the Red Sox.

  226. miggs August 24th, 2009 at 9:10 pm

Regarding CC and the silly argument about who deserves a Cy Young award and why.

Most people understand that the Cy Young award goes to the best pitcher for that particular year.

So who cares if he hasn’t been the most dominant pitcher all year? Can you even name any pitcher that has been? Not Beckett. Not Verlander. Not Grienke.

Most baseball fans understand there will be peaks and valleys in a season. No one dominates all year. That’s why you don’t see pitchers with 35-0 records.

Try and grasp this. If CC continues on the roll he’s on now, he will run away with the Cy Young. And he will receive it because he’s the best pitcher in the AL for 2009. Pretty simple.

  227. Carl August 24th, 2009 at 9:11 pm

    Johan needs surgery!?!?!?

  228. Bo Knows August 24th, 2009 at 9:11 pm

All the Cy talk and no mention of Santana. All Yankee fans should take a deep breath. The Yankees don’t have Santana. All the warning signs were there – drop in velocity, going away from sliders etc. The Yankees would have a gutted team today if that big trade had gone through. Another bonus – no Hank in the papers.

  229. Betsy August 24th, 2009 at 9:11 pm

How good do you think Buccholz will be, GF? Is he really their only good young (though at 25 he’s getting up there) young pitching prospect? If that’s the case, I would agree with you……unless of course they think he’s not more than a #3. Then you probably have to trade him……

  230. Markus August 24th, 2009 at 9:11 pm

“God forbid if the Sox get him! Something else to fret about for the next couple of months.”

lol Miggs… it is the same story.

Some people just can’t enjoy what they have… always complain complain, moan, moan.

If you can’t enjoy this season, being the best team in baseball and having the division wrapped up in mid-August with a great team that is likeable and fun to watch with all the comeback wins and pies and all…. then when can you have fun?

  231. Rishi August 24th, 2009 at 9:12 pm

yeah – that 3 run HR was great from Buccholz

  232. Betsy August 24th, 2009 at 9:12 pm

GF, lol I really don’t. People were talking about the Sox game, that’s all. I never would have posted updates on them nor would I even have checked the score. I care about them only insofar as I think they are a dangerous team ……

  233. RS August 24th, 2009 at 9:12 pm

I feel bad for Blue Jays fans. The compensation for not getting stud prospects to help rebuild the team was that they would get one year of watching Halladay pitch. Now he stinks and the Jays missed the boat on selling him.

I can’t imagine a scenario where the Blue Jays get more for Halladay this offseason then they could have gotten at the deadline. I guess if Lackey walks then the Angels might get desperate, but that’s about it.

  234. Carl August 24th, 2009 at 9:13 pm

  238. Star August 24th, 2009 at 9:15 pm

CC is a low-maintenance pitcher. Doesn’t get to emotional, isin’t wild, doesn’t need mound visits and catchers visits, doesn’t cause controversy, doesn’t take 10 minutes to throw a pitch, etc. He just goes out there and wins.

He may not win the CY Young but he is the ace of the team that has the best record.

  239. Bo Knows August 24th, 2009 at 9:16 pm

The Blue Jays can’t trade the Doc in division. They might as well put up a sign – “Going out of business sale”. They just gave away Rios for nothing but money.

  240. AvoidingAnaheim August 24th, 2009 at 9:16 pm

The Yanks need to avoid Anaheim at all costs. They will sweep us. We can only pray that the Sox make it (GULP) so they can dispose of Anaheim. The Angels can only beat one good team in the AL, US! And for those who say no, just go back to 2000. They’re the only team with a winning record against us. It makes HFA all that much more important.

    —————-

What the Red Sox need to do is find quality pitchers. Don’t be concerned whether the guy is a legitimate #1, #2, or #3.

They already have their top two guys. It’s not imperative for Buchholz to turn out better than them. He just needs to be considerably better than Penny, Smoltz, and Tazawa – which he has been.

  242. Morris August 24th, 2009 at 9:19 pm

It is interesting… if CC is closing in on 20 wins down the stretch, do they rest him and skip him starts and keep his PC down just to keep him fresh or do they let him go all out to try and get 20?

  243. Tom in N.J. August 24th, 2009 at 9:20 pm

Quality 3-4-5 guys are hard to find, Betsy. Not all prospects, be it Buchholz or IPK. need to be traded because they don’t reach “ace” level.

  244. Giuseppe Franco August 24th, 2009 at 9:20 pm

The Angels are in Yankee fans’ heads more than they are in the Yankee players’ heads.

This team isn’t going to fear anyone and they’ve proven they can beat anyone.

  245. miggs August 24th, 2009 at 9:21 pm

Markus its a sad situation for fans like that.

The complaining like you said, but also the unrealistic expectations for the players.

Best record in baseball, 32 games over .500, 7.5 game lead and they point out the “weaknesses” and explain the players they’d like replaced because they “can’t be trusted”.

People should be enjoying this season. I like this team more than any other Yankee team in the last 10 years.

I posted earlier that I felt confident saying they were a great team. Not good, great.

Its not about being a “homer” or looking at things through “pinstriped glasses”. Its about appreciating the recognizing how different the 2009 team is from recent past teams.

A pox on Jose Contreras. Chicago would be ahead by 6 runs if he just let Konerko pick up that ball.

If I were a Met fan I’d want to know why they let Johan keep running out there with elbow discomfort. Especially considering that Mets have been out of contention for quite some time. If he does in fact need surgery, they have already lost him for a good portion of next year.

  262. Donnie - Will Meet Jim Rice Under the O'Neill Banner August 24th, 2009 at 9:58 pm

If we play up to caliber for the next 38 games, I figure we can end up going about 27-11, because it’s a rather soft schedule to begin with, and the Yankees are a VERY good team. That would put us at 105 wins, and considering how poorly we started the season, I think that’s phenomenal. This could very well be, knock on wood, the best second half a team has had in many, many years, if not ever.

Another important point that gives us a scheduling advantage the rest of the way over LAA is that they only have two more off days, whereas the Yanks have 4. The Yankees will be able to continually give guys rest and set their rotation without sacrificing games. Starting 9/10, the Yankees have every single Thursday off for the rest of the season.

I mean, the guy hasn’t thrown between starts since the ASB. What does that tell you? The team has an incredible amount invested in this guy – how do they not take every precaution? Man if Santana needs surgery & this has been an issue (as suspected) for a while – the Mets need to fire their entire medical staff
    ***

I have been telling Mets fans that all season.

If the Yankees ever had a rash of injuries like the Mets have, they would have all been fired already.

Remember 2007 when it seemed like every Yankee was hitting the DL with a hammy problem? The conditioning coaches were gone by May.

She is cute, but she might be a little too into Nick Swisher. The other girl in the picture, seen through the passenger windown, looks cute too. Cute girls hanging around baseball players, who’d've thunk it.

Any idea if he’s making any public appearances?

  277. bru August 24th, 2009 at 10:34 pm

in the playoffs it comes down to 1 or 2 pitchers getting hot & winning like hammels did for philly.

if we face the angels & cc beats lackey twice we win

if cc wins once & lackey once other pitchers come into play in a 7 game series it takes 2 hot pitchers

  278. L to the 2nd August 24th, 2009 at 10:36 pm

Erica, I remember all too well.

Obviously, there is a degree of bad luck involved that basically everyone except K Rod has been hurt.

But – you have to wonder how much of it is negligence by the staff – not seeing warning signs, misdiagnosing problems, perhaps not erring on the side of caution…

    Just mind boggling

  279. Reality Check August 24th, 2009 at 10:38 pm

Good for them. They’re in the final four with some tough customers, but they’ve done great no matter what happens from here.

  280. Nick in SF August 24th, 2009 at 10:40 pm

Papelbon! I missed him this weekend.

  281. L to the 2nd August 24th, 2009 at 10:41 pm

Wonder if he can hold a 4 spot, with Wagner waiting in the wings and all…..

  282. m August 24th, 2009 at 10:42 pm

The Sox have run through Ramirez, Oka, and Bard. Not including Papelbon, because as Nick alluded to, he hasn’t pitched in a while.

Lose the battle, White Sox, but win the war.

Looks like midseason form to me.

  296. Giuseppe Franco August 24th, 2009 at 11:02 pm

Yeah, the White Sox should be feared, alright.

There isn’t a manager in MLB right now that has done less this season with good talent than Mr. Hardass himself Ozzie Guillen.

  297. L to the 2nd August 24th, 2009 at 11:04 pm

Ozzie’s schtick has a shelf life, and its clearly expired in CHI

Now if they can just do something about Hawk Harrelson

Put THIS on the board, jackass.

  298. Betsy August 24th, 2009 at 11:05 pm

LOL I just heard Dan Shaughnessy and Bob Ryan discussing (on the Globe website) the weekend……DS thinks the Yankees got exposed by the thumping Red Sox, lol. The Sox are definitely red hot and can really hit, but they lost 2/3. Even though I think they are going to win the WC and be a hugely tough out in the playoffs, to say that they exposed the Yankees is just silly. The Yankees are the ones that exposed them…….Shaughnessy seemed very happy that the Sox were not overmatched by CC and battled him.

  299. haiku-man August 24th, 2009 at 11:08 pm

Roy Halladay lost again today 12-7 to Tampa.

  300. L to the 2nd August 24th, 2009 at 11:10 pm

Haiku: have to think Halladay is still hurting from the groin injury – can’t believe he’s mailing it in

  301. haiku-man August 24th, 2009 at 11:11 pm

Anytime you win a series in someones home turf, you’re over matched.

  302. Nick in SF August 24th, 2009 at 11:11 pm

Sounds like Shaughnessy is suffering from overexposure.

  303. Albert August 24th, 2009 at 11:15 pm

Even if he had a brutal postseason this year, got booed and killed by the fans/media, and was miserable and couldn’t handle it, and requested a trade… nobody will take that contract. Just like nobody would take A-Rod’s contract (pre-steroids) unless the team picked up a huge portion of it.

Gone are the days that high salaried players with long contracts are traded.

  304. Betsy August 24th, 2009 at 11:16 pm

Gammons likes the Yankees, though……even though he loves the Sox. I don’t care if Shaughnessy likes them, but boy, he sounded dumb.

Nick, I think I’m the one suffering from overexposure…………to Shaughnessey.

  306. Superman August 24th, 2009 at 11:19 pm

The only bad part of the weekend was Burnett’s embarrassing performance.

CC was a stud… scoring some cheap runs of errors doesn’t make it impressive. And our offense scorched Penny and Beckett.

  307. Reality Check August 24th, 2009 at 11:21 pm

“The only bad part of the weekend was Burnett’s embarrassing performance.”

Pettitte was pretty piss poor too.

  308. Zolio August 24th, 2009 at 11:24 pm

He was fine through the first 4 innings… if he didn’t have to sit that long, maybe things would have been different.

  309. Nick in SF August 24th, 2009 at 11:24 pm

Pettitte was fine before he sat on the bench for forever. Who knows either way what his night would have looked like without that break.

Getting shut down by Buccholtz wasn’t so great.

  310. Mark August 24th, 2009 at 11:25 pm

    Huh? How was Pettitte poor?

He gave up 1 run through 4 innings, then sat for 36 minutes. The pitching as a whole sucked after that inning.

  311. bodhisattva - Destiny Wears Pinstripes August 24th, 2009 at 11:26 pm

    Pettitte sat for 45 minutes.

That put him out of rhythm.

I completely trust Pettitte in high leverage.

  312. Giuseppe Franco August 24th, 2009 at 11:26 pm

The only thing more embarrassing than the result on Saturday were the fans complaining about this team and virtually putting the Red Sox back in the race.

But that didn’t last long considering what happened the next night.

  313. L to the 2nd August 24th, 2009 at 11:26 pm

Regardless of whether it’s injury related or something else, Halladay’s performance has only sealed JP’s fate for doing nothing at the trade deadline.

  314. T-Zach August 24th, 2009 at 11:27 pm

AJ gave up 7 runs by the 2nd inning. Andy was fine when it mattered. Some cheap runs after we had a 10 run lead doesn’t diminish that.

  315. Atach77 August 24th, 2009 at 11:28 pm

Someone please help me out with the Cervelli-cougar reference. Regretfully, I’m in the dark on this one

  316. yanks 1927 August 24th, 2009 at 11:28 pm

yeah, pettitte wasn’t great either but nowhere near as bad as AJ. bruney and the defense made his line worse than it was that 6th inning was a disaster

  317. Joe D August 24th, 2009 at 11:30 pm

Ask any pitcher to sit for 36 minutes and see if he is sharp the next 1\2 inning. It ain’t easy.

  318. Gator August 24th, 2009 at 11:31 pm

    Franco,

And you know what is even more embarrassing? There were actually some fans yesterday who said they couldn’t enjoy the win that night because they were still “worn down” by what happened on Saturday to AJ and the implications it had

But that’s Yankee fans for you.

  319. Giuseppe Franco August 24th, 2009 at 11:33 pm

It doesn’t matter how Pettitte pitched Friday. He gets a pass.

He’s been outstanding since the ASB and should have won a few games but the offense wasn’t scoring for him.

A cheap win doesn’t diminish how well he’s pitched for the last six weeks.

  320. Fallen Star August 24th, 2009 at 11:33 pm

    Attach,

The ladies on this site always commented on how attractive Cervelli was, especially his eyes. They used to fawn over him in his postgame comments. And since most of the women here are in their 30s and 40s, while Cervelli is in his early 20s… thats where the cougar reference comes from.

Doesn’t matter what they think of you, they’re being very unkind. And all it took was one comment, and then the others came crawling out out of the shadows.

But I guess us girls gotta take it, if we want to hang out in the locker room with the boys, huh?

Chin up. But stop worrying so much. You’ll save everyone a lot of grief. :)

  355. Nat August 24th, 2009 at 11:56 pm

    No brainer for Wagner.

Why would you go to BOS if they were not willing to drop the option? Yeah, you get a chance to win this year, but after that, you have no assurance you will be a FA next year.

  356. L to the 2nd August 24th, 2009 at 11:56 pm

Papelbon isn’t a bright kid, He’s talented but not very bright. He also is soft when he blows games up. I’ve seen him crying before and complaining constantly.

Right now Wagner is comfortable, to be near his home. Rather just finish the season as a Met and then move on.

    Wow Nick. Are they nuts?

  365. Erick August 25th, 2009 at 12:02 am

Betsy – No offense, but you bring a lot of this snark upon yourself by saying things like the 2010 rotation will be weak and you couldn’t enjoy the win yesterday (or something to that effect), and things like that.

Do you expect people just to ignore those comments? You get a lot of flack unfairly for praising Boston (but anyone who dares says nice things about Boston gets flack by the usual suspects), but a lot of the other things you bring upon yourself.

  366. Betsy August 25th, 2009 at 12:03 am

  378. Betsy August 25th, 2009 at 12:09 am

Um, I don’t deserve to be insulted……a bunch of internet bullies who wouldn’t say any of these things to people if they were face to face.

Not that you guys deserve an explanation, but AJ’s performance was NOT why I didn’t go ga ga over yesterday’s win. It was the hullaballo afterwards, with the controversy I knew was going to erupt, with the parsing of his comments to the point where people thought he was throwing his teammates under the bus…….Yeah, I was unhappy with all of that, so freaking sue me.

As to my opinion that the 2010 rotation isn’t going to be all that, well goody for you that you look at things in rose colored glasses. I’m entitled to an opinion – if you don’t like mine, you can ignore it. I don’t buy the garbage that I deserve to be insulted… Joba and Phil are mostly about potential. 383. REZ August 25th, 2009 at 12:11 am

Why are they making us wait for Tex?

  384. Betsy August 25th, 2009 at 12:11 am

GF, I wasn’t necessarily aiming my comment at you, but your post was in response to a post clearly aimed at me. I’m sorry, I know you never said anything about me……..

I think I’ll wear an asbestos suit before I start posting here…………This is supposed to be relaxing for me. I could get more rest at a firing range

  385. Zach from CA August 25th, 2009 at 12:13 am

Am I missing something? Who in this thread insulted you?
    You are really overreacting…

  386. L to the 2nd August 25th, 2009 at 12:13 am

    thanks Kelvin

I’ll be flipping between DET – LAA & Tropic Thunder :)

  387. ben g August 25th, 2009 at 12:13 am

Thing is, this is a blog.. You post things knowing that others will react to your post/comments.

You write alot of interesting stuff Betsy, but you tend to be negative ALOT of the time. Infact this week it’s been whines or negativity.

Try the OPPC, They are really nice posters that might help you.

This is just painful. I’ll check back later for Tex

  390. Betsy August 25th, 2009 at 12:15 am

Ben g, I think people confuse negativity with being realistic. Do I insult people who are being overy optimistic? If people don’t like my posts, they are free to ignore them. I don’t buy that it’s ok to be rude and insulting because I’m more negative than people would like.

I don’t need to join an optimists club…I don’t see anything wrong with my point of view.

  391. Betsy August 25th, 2009 at 12:16 am

    Overly…..

  392. Uncle Ellsworth (#2 needs 20 to tie #4) August 25th, 2009 at 12:16 am

  393. Rockks August 25th, 2009 at 12:16 am

I hate watching these shows waiting for guests and they wait till the last portion of the show to show them… atleast say it at the opening lol

  394. Giuseppe Franco August 25th, 2009 at 12:17 am

Aw, Betsy. You worry too much.

    Who cares what trolls think.

I had no idea that Gator took a shot at you. My response was aimed at Yankee fans in general who essentially come here to complain about everything.

Just remember, I told you a couple of months back that this team was going to be fine.

We can worry about 2010 when 2009 is over. Who knows. Pettitte might be back or they may make a deal for someone else.

They don’t have to field the 1970 Baltimore Orioles rotation to get things done next year.

  395. L to the 2nd August 25th, 2009 at 12:17 am

    Yes Dave it’s true.

    You still suck.

  398. JZ August 25th, 2009 at 12:18 am

    Why all the bickering?

7.5 game lead and 32 games over. Enjoy this folks, it isin’t always going to be this easy. Rather than complain, enjoy having the best team in baseball.

  404. Betsy August 25th, 2009 at 12:22 am

GF, thanks. I’m trying hard not to get discouraged by some of these posts………

I always enjoy reading your posts – they make me feel better, lol. I admit that a part of my negativity stems from the fact that I believe that preparing myself for the worst will make the pain of losing a lot easier to bear, lol. Dramatic? Probably, but that’s my life in a nutshell.

I’m tired and need to get some sleep – have a good night, friends!

  405. Michael August 25th, 2009 at 12:23 am

Late Night comedy is a lot like Sports Talk radio… a dying breed.

  411. Giuseppe Franco August 25th, 2009 at 12:24 am

I hadn’t watched Leno in years. It has been even longer for Letterman.

I never liked Conan at all and I didn’t even know who Jimmy Fallon was until he made fun of A-Rod’s pics with the mirror.

I guess I’m not a late night talk show kind of viewer. Hasn’t been the same since Johnny Carson retired.

  412. AZ Dan August 25th, 2009 at 12:25 am

Why are Abreu and Ervin Santana laughing in the dugout? Their team is down 10-1!!!

  413. Ben August 25th, 2009 at 12:25 am

This is ridiculous. So many commercials.

  414. hey kelvin says August 25th, 2009 at 12:25 am

Hope it is worth my wait.

  416. V Torch August 25th, 2009 at 12:26 am

  417. m August 25th, 2009 at 12:26 am

    Ben,

I’m usually asleep by the time Leno comes on. And I was going to just catch the video that is sure to be posted here.

But I might try to stay up to catch a LoHudder.

  428. Forntoso August 25th, 2009 at 12:29 am

Oh man, Carson was the best. The rest of these late night guys are all jokes.

  429. Nick in SF August 25th, 2009 at 12:29 am

Uncle, I like my pick a lot, but I have no idea what the competition looks like. How many entries are there? If no one is close to mine and he does it a couple days earlier, I win, yay.

Bobbleheads can be a little pricy, a much smaller prize would be adequate.

  430. Uncle Ellsworth (#2 needs 20 to tie #4) August 25th, 2009 at 12:31 am

    new post

  431. thisguy August 25th, 2009 at 12:31 am

    in no specific order…

    AL cy young debate:

    1. Halladay
    2. Verlander
    3. Grienke
    4. Sabathia
    5. Beckett

    AL MVP debate:

    1. Mauer
    2. Tex
    3. Jeter
    4. Miguel Cabrera

obviously a long ways to go, but you can probably assume for CC to win it, he has to lower his ERA to about 3, other than that, Halladay looks like the guy…if Grienke racks up the wins, then he may take it.

Cabrera is having a great year, but his lack of RBI and defense (compared to Tex,) plus how no one seems to think about him may hurt his chances. But his numbers are ridiculous.

Mauer is clearly having the best year, especially after missing a month, but his team may not even be close in the standings…if his team can remain in the playoff race for the final week, that may be enough to give him the MVP nod, even if his team misses out of the postseason.

If you consider playoffs as a key part of the MVP discussion, then I think it comes down to Tex and Cabrera. With Jeter missing out on a MVP again.

    discuss.

  432. L to the 2nd August 25th, 2009 at 12:31 am

Yep, it’s all about you, Dave

  433. Jim Rice's Bad Role Models August 25th, 2009 at 12:32 am

“Why are Abreu and Ervin Santana laughing in the dugout? Their team is down 10-1!!!”

10-3 now, they are sitting on Verlander’s fastball.

  435. Brandon...I'M AWESOME!... Getting ready to buy the Marky Mark MVP MIXTAPE Vol.1 August 25th, 2009 at 12:34 am

    10-4

  436. haiku-man August 25th, 2009 at 12:36 am

Angels have 3 innings to score a min of 11 runs.Abreu at bat,and he gets on.T Hunter just dbled and brought in Abreu.

Wow Angels are putting a hurtin on Verlander,4 runs given up so far.

  437. haiku-man August 25th, 2009 at 12:39 am

    Verlander pulled in the 6th

  438. haiku-man August 25th, 2009 at 1:26 am

Angels are fighting back what s game.

  439. Joe C August 25th, 2009 at 3:35 pm

I hated when Torre shut down the Yankees every September to rest players. It’s a recipe for coming into the postseason flat. The Yankees are definitely on the schedule makers bad side what with two West coast trips this late in the season but a Yankee series win in Anaheim will go a long way this October.

  440. Wagner to Boston! August 25th, 2009 at 4:35 pm

//Boston will knock out LA, we will knock out Boston//

    Like you said Beckett/Lester.

Boston’s not scared of CC and AJ. We took care of CC in 2007 and AJ is an after-thought with his last 2 outings at Fenway.

I’d be worried if I were you. Wagner to Boston seals the “Boston is built better for the play-offs” deal!!!!
