Late night with Tex

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Aug 25, 2009 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Mark Teixeira is on The Late Show with David Letterman now. He just infuriated people in Boston and Los Angeles by saying he knew at this time last year they he wanted to play in New York.

He’s doing a good job, casual and funny.

UPDATE, 12:36 a.m.: Now Tex is hitting balls on 53rd St. His segment was short, too bad. But he did well.

    Great interview so far

  4. Awais August 25th, 2009 at 12:32 am

i honestly did not think he would be this good of a player…he is doing a great job for the yankees…but can we win a world series before we go on late night shows? is that too much to ask?

  5. Rishi August 25th, 2009 at 12:33 am

    great job so far!

  6. ANON August 25th, 2009 at 12:33 am

Pete must love that he says he’s done blogging for the day and the second he posts a new story he has comments. I am pretty sure none of us have lives.

  7. Uncle Ellsworth (#2 needs 20 to tie #4) August 25th, 2009 at 12:35 am

    Tex pretty affable..
Nick there were only about 6-7 picks. I think someone picked the 3rd and Fran has the late game as you know. I need to go and check when he gets closer.

  8. Awais August 25th, 2009 at 12:35 am

haha i normally check this blog before i go to sleep..but ur right..there is alot of other things i could be doing.

  9. L to the 2nd August 25th, 2009 at 12:35 am

    Tex did a nice job

I’m sure BOS & LA will get over it.

    Well maybe not Boston :)

  10. Ami August 25th, 2009 at 12:35 am

I’m loving this! He’s just too cute. This season has made quite the Teixeira fan out of me…

  11. Banks August 25th, 2009 at 12:35 am

Verlander gets a 10-1 lead in the top of the 6th and gives up 3 runs in the bottom of the 6th and has 1st and 3rd, 2 outs.

All pitchers are rusty after sitting for a long 1\2 inning.

  12. ZMAN August 25th, 2009 at 12:37 am

    LOL this is hilarious.

  13. S.A.--Serenity Now August 25th, 2009 at 12:37 am

Great job by Tex tonight. I can finally go to sleep now.

    10-4 now

I’ve never checked out Posnanski’s blog, but um, he’s kind of obsessed with Mauer’s Pauer. He even questions if it’s going Sauer?

    Curious. Very curious.

Scrolling down, it’s actually quite clever. But very annoying that he’s paying so much attention to the Flauer of Minnesota.

So basically I own half of the 5th, 6th, and the early game of the 7th?

    I don’t see how I can lose.

  20. Rich James August 25th, 2009 at 12:40 am

David Letterman still has a TV show? WOW…i thought he died like 4 years ago?

  21. Yanks 182 August 25th, 2009 at 12:41 am

“David Letterman still has a TV show? WOW…i thought he died like 4 years ago?”

    That was Jay Leno.

ESPN reporting Wagner stays with Mets

Another fine job by the boy genius

  29. Ben August 25th, 2009 at 12:45 am

Next to Anna Wintour he seemed like Chris Rock.

  30. Mike August 25th, 2009 at 12:45 am

Is Conan O’Brien the late night guy with the heavy Irish accent? Or is that Carson Daily?

  31. Nick in SF August 25th, 2009 at 12:47 am

I won’t hold you to it. Lots of time to confirm.

I kind of enjoyed Craig Kilborn. I think not many others did.

Carson was king, but seemed a little tame by the time I could even stay up that late. My grandfather loved him.

  32. Kate August 25th, 2009 at 12:48 am

Good job by Tex! seemed very comfortable and good sense of humor! loved when he said he ALWAYS wanted to be a yankee! :-)

  33. DFox August 25th, 2009 at 12:48 am

“Is Conan O’Brien the late night guy with the heavy Irish accent? Or is that Carson Daily?”

I think you’re thinking of Craig Furgeson who is awful.

  35. cgs August 25th, 2009 at 12:49 am

    Nick in SF-

I loved Kilborn, 5 questions was great.

    Mike-
That’s Craig Ferguson, he is Scottish.

  36. L to the 2nd August 25th, 2009 at 12:50 am

I think you mean Craig Ferguson – more proof that anyone can have a show.

    I actually don’t mind Conan.

  37. m August 25th, 2009 at 12:50 am

    pat,

    Nice one.

Did you check it out? He’s got a daily mauer watch.

Everyone should click on the link and vote on the “How’s Teixeira’s defense this year?” poll.

You’ll be dismayed at the results. Clearly not a big Yankee fanbase at the JoePas site.

  38. dennis-Costanza August 25th, 2009 at 12:50 am

  40. R+ August 25th, 2009 at 12:52 am

Craig Furguson may be the most unfunny person on the planet. How the hell did that guy get a show?

  41. Rich James August 25th, 2009 at 12:52 am

i actually like Conan better then any of them…Leno was kinda so so…and honestly, Ferguson and Letterman could drop dead and i wouldn’t lose a bit of sleep!

  42. m August 25th, 2009 at 12:52 am

Actually Fergusson’s the most entertaining of the bunch. Half the fun is trying to figure out what he’s saying.

  43. Greg Cohen August 25th, 2009 at 12:53 am

Tex is the man, his joke about his kids was very funny. Like Pete said he did a good job.

  44. L to the 2nd August 25th, 2009 at 12:53 am

I do remember him interviewing Dolly Parton, and saying “I’d give a month’s pay to see what’s in there”

  45. m August 25th, 2009 at 12:54 am

Tex has kids? I didn’t know that robots could procreate. ;)

  46. Al August 25th, 2009 at 12:55 am

I found this quote from the Damon Yahoo Sports article pretty funny, I don’t know why–

“Chien-Ming Wang killed our bullpen early in the season,” Damon said of the Yankees’ sinkerballer who is now out for the season with a strained shoulder. “Our bullpen was supposed to be our strength coming into the season, and all of a sudden it was our biggest weakness. It isn’t anymore.”

  47. L to the 2nd August 25th, 2009 at 12:55 am

m does Ferguson’s show have subtitles?

  48. Nick in SF August 25th, 2009 at 12:56 am

  55. Brian August 25th, 2009 at 1:01 am

I still think Bruney is a big peace of our pen. The guy throws strikes and has nasty stuff… it is just a matter of being a little more consistant.

  62. PL August 25th, 2009 at 1:08 am

This is unrelated but I have Friday tix against the White Sox…anyone know if Girardi is going to let Mitre really start against Buehrle? or will he eventually go to Gaudin

  63. L to the 2nd August 25th, 2009 at 1:09 am

    Bronx – agree.

I took the family last year for the first time (unfortunately, the Ponson Sun. night game).

A fun time – only that & Wrigley left (which I’ve also visited). Truly a dying breed.

i like bruney but no one has ever accused bruney of being a strike throwing machine

  70. Giuseppe Franco August 25th, 2009 at 1:17 am

The MLB Network reported tonight that Peavy may return to the mound on Saturday against Sabathia.

    Good luck with that, Jake.

  71. L to the 2nd August 25th, 2009 at 1:17 am

I like Bruney, but performances like Friday have to drive you nuts

  72. Eric August 25th, 2009 at 1:17 am

As soon as Adam Eaton came in the game, you knew the Giants would score

  73. NY dave August 25th, 2009 at 1:18 am

    of course, just our luck

the sux miss peavy yet we get to face him AND burhlee.

sux get to face castoffs like contreras and garcia

  74. Nick in SF August 25th, 2009 at 1:19 am

I don’t know when, but I really do think Bruney will become an important piece for us.

But I believe in addition by subtraction.

  75. L to the 2nd August 25th, 2009 at 1:19 am

Peavy will find out, as an NL pitcher, what it’s like playing against “the varsity”

    ———-

    Who cares.

The White Sox are one game above .500 and are probably going to get squashed in the Bronx.

In case you haven’t noticed, the Yanks are pretty tough to beat these days, especially in their own backyard.

Couldn’t care less about who the Sox trot out there this weekend.

And they’ve knocked around Mark Buehrle pretty hard throughout his career.

  80. 7*7 August 25th, 2009 at 1:24 am

lol Angels were down 10-1 in the 6th

And in the 8th, the tying run is coming to the plate

  81. L to the 2nd August 25th, 2009 at 1:24 am

    This is getting ridiculous.

    Tying run at the plate.

  82. Brandon...I'M AWESOME!... Getting ready to buy the Marky Mark MVP MIXTAPE Vol.1 August 25th, 2009 at 1:27 am

they force you to throw fastballs, that’s what I noticed. 1st pitch to Vlad poor located fastball and then the 2nd was a cookie he sat on. Hunter’s hit another fastball I think it was 2-1 and he sat on that. Abreu’s HR fastball. That’s why you can’t miss spots vs them, they hit the fastball in thier counts, that’s how they come back.

  83. pat August 25th, 2009 at 1:27 am

MLB Network said early tonight that Peavy was only going 80 pitches in AAA tonight and would likely need another rehab start.

He’s going to be pitching with a pitch count if he’s pitching Saturday.

  84. Drain003 August 25th, 2009 at 1:27 am

    Fernando Rodney for 4 outs?

    This should be fun.

  85. Brandon...I'M AWESOME!... Getting ready to buy the Marky Mark MVP MIXTAPE Vol.1 August 25th, 2009 at 1:28 am

If Rodney this next inning doesn’t locate his slider, he’ll be on the losing end here.

    Thanks DET

    HFA would be nice

  87. Bronx Jeers August 25th, 2009 at 1:29 am

    Dennis,

This may sound odd but I think I felt safer at Fenway than I’ve felt at some games at Yankee stadium. Honestly from what I saw, Sox fans in the Bronx have it a lot tougher.

I could go on and on about what I found appealing but I may have my allegiance questioned.

I just thought it was an immensely interesting building and combined with the intimacy of the actual baseball game-fan experience, I’d put it on my shortlist of favorite stadiums. If not at the top.

I was going to go to Dillon’s but they were doing some interior work and it was too hot for the patio. I ended up going to Bukowski’s? which was right up my alley.

Afterward I tried to go to Giocomo’s in North End but was foiled by an incredibly long line.

    Thanks again for your tips.

  88. Al August 25th, 2009 at 1:31 am

Please Boston – beat this team in the ALDS for us. Thanks.

  89. Steve D August 25th, 2009 at 1:33 am

  90. m August 25th, 2009 at 1:33 am

Is Palmer not a starter anymore? He was off to one of those Aaron Small starts. Unless he had IP issues.

  93. m August 25th, 2009 at 1:35 am

  94. m August 25th, 2009 at 1:36 am

lol. Eaton scores on a BB. A base hit will tie the game now.

  95. L to the 2nd August 25th, 2009 at 1:36 am

Walked the pitcher with the bases loaded!

    That’s so…K Rod

  96. m August 25th, 2009 at 1:38 am

Let’s see if Spillborghs pulls a Yankee and swings at the first pitch.

  97. Rocco August 25th, 2009 at 1:39 am

That is why you don’t use your closer in a tie game on the road.

When you get the lead, your 5th or 6th worst arm in the pen is called upon to protect a 1 run lead.

  98. Nick in SF August 25th, 2009 at 1:39 am

That could kill the San Francisco Giants.

  99. Rocco August 25th, 2009 at 1:40 am

Rockies visit SF next weekend. You know the Giants will want payback for that sprinting exhibition.

I’m out – back later today

Just keep winning series…..2/3 vs. TEX will do nicely.

  120. raymagnetic August 25th, 2009 at 1:58 am

    “of course, just our luck

the sux miss peavy yet we get to face him AND burhlee.

sux get to face castoffs like contreras and garcia”

Do you realize that the Sox have to win 9 more games than the Yankees this year in order to win the division?

    9 More Games. 9 MORE GAMES!!!1!!!!!

In other words, the division is the Yankees this year.

New York has 16 remaining road games with 10 of those games within the AL East Toronto,Baltimore and Tampa.
So outside of a 6 game road trip in Seattle and L.A. in September NY has a “comfortable” schedule with not much travel time between cities.

  124. Betsy August 25th, 2009 at 8:11 am

LOL Tex keeps saying different things at different times……now he’s saying he knew he wanted to play in NY all the time. He certainly knows how to play to his audience, lol

I didn’t watch it anyway, lol

  125. Betsy August 25th, 2009 at 8:13 am

Dennis, thanks for your kind words. I’m trying, lol……

  126. sunny615 August 25th, 2009 at 8:16 am

Looks like Wagner stays a Met. Sox wouldn’t agree to not offer arb. Doesn’t mean the Mets won’t either…

  127. MGUMPHER August 25th, 2009 at 8:22 am

Maybe Wagner just didn’t want to go to Bawstahn.

  128. sunny615 August 25th, 2009 at 8:24 am

    can’t blame him…

  129. miggs August 25th, 2009 at 8:29 am

    Tex wasn’t “playing his audience”.

Maybe if you actually watched the segment you would know that. Instead you like to blog about things you didn’t see. Like Yankee games.

Tex never offered Boston a discount. The deal he proposed included 2 vesting years bringing the total deal to about 220 million.

  130. bru August 25th, 2009 at 8:34 am

the rs front office messed things up & ran their mouths to tex & his agent & the rs tried to hussle tex in the draft.

  131. miggs August 25th, 2009 at 8:34 am

Looking forward to this Rangers series, we seemed to handle them pretty well earlier in the year.

As much as I want to win every game, I’m not going to be too broken up if the Rangers take 1 or 2 games. Unlike others I’m not ready to hand the Sox the wild card.

There’s a lot of baseball to be played and the Rays and Rangers both have a great shot at taking the WC.

  132. haiku-man August 25th, 2009 at 8:35 am

When it all comes down to it,the Yankees are the most storied dynasty in The History of Baseball. So of course all players want to wear the Pinstripes.

A couple of years ago I heard on a sports program, that 40% of all Mlb products sales are Yankees. That means the other 29 teams collectively make up 60%.

Even the hillbilly R.Johnson wanted ti wear the pinstripes, but he didn’t fit in NY from the beginning.

After years of playing who’s on 1st,glad to have a solid first baseman, that it’s Tex is icing on the cake!!

  133. SJ44 August 25th, 2009 at 8:37 am

Another shining example of the Red Sox being unable to do things quietly and it bites them in the butt.

If they didn’t leak the waiver tranaction to Ken Rosenthal, perhaps they work it out with Wagner.

Instead, they once again put their business on the street, in an attempt to strongarm the Mets, and Billy Wagner decides to exercise his rights.

Wagner wants to close next year. He is probably 60-70 saves away from HOF consideration. To do that, he needs a 2 year deal to close. Preferably at a place of his choosing.

He watches this unfold and decides he’s going to protect himself. Especially after Papelbon runs his mouth about his possible acquisition.

The Red Sox spend too much time playing the “media game”, trying to show everyone they are smarter than everyone else.

The did it with Tex in the off-season and its the primary reason they aren’t going to win the division and now have to fight to make the playoffs.

They did with their “almost” Felix Hernandez trade at the deadline. No teams leaks “almost” trades more than the Red Sox.

They can now add the Billy Wagner Waiver Debacle to the mix.

The Yankees hit plenty of HRs, but I do not think they rely on the long ball to win…of course, it could just be Sherman trying throw cold water on Yankee fans.

  135. Betsy August 25th, 2009 at 8:41 am

SJ, do you really think Wagner (with some more saves) will get into the HOF? Is he a HOF caliber player?

Theo leaks in part to bait Cashman, but Brian is too smart with stealth his negotiations.

  138. Doreen August 25th, 2009 at 8:48 am

I just watched the Teixeira segment (LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the internet!!). What a great guy with a good demeanor and terrific smile.

Erica, if you’re around, last night I went upstairs and my husband had the Golf network on the television. Your pretend boyfriend, Johnny Damon, was on – it was all Damon and some golf pro, talking and playing golf with a few tidbits that were baseball related. He said he wanted to sign another long term contract with the Yankees, or at least another couple of years. He said he realizes that at some point they’re going to tell him they need to go younger. It was kind of funny, though, because then the golf pro talked about how 35 is “old” for baseball, but in golf, as long as you can putt, you can play forever!

  139. haiku-man August 25th, 2009 at 8:49 am

    Meant his stealth negotiations.

  140. SJ44 August 25th, 2009 at 8:50 am

If he gets 60-70 saves, he’s in the discussion.

That’s why he isn’t interested in being a setup guy for the last couple of years of his career.

He’s already made over 80 million dollars in his career.

Its not about the money at this point.

You don’t rehab from TJ Surgery at 38 years old, get back a month or two early, to “prove” you are a setup guy.

He is looking to put up numbers that will get him into HOF discussion.

It isn’t about whether we think he is a HOF’er or not.

Its about what is motivating the player.

That’s why its always best to keep your business off the street. You never know what could happen that could derail a deal.

If nobody knows Billy Wagner is claimed by the Red Sox, Papelbon doesn’t run his mouth, Wagner doesn’t get @#@$ and hardens his position re: his option being picked up, and the Red Sox have a chance to get the player.

Instead, it played exactly how you DON’T want it to play out, and the Red Sox look silly in the process.

  141. Doreen August 25th, 2009 at 8:56 am

In today’s paper (Star Ledger), they have Wagner saying basically he wants to control his own destiny. He said he will most definitely decline arbitration if offered, which would cost whatever team he went to in terms of compensatory prospects. He mentioned he would ideally want to play near his home in Virginia, and mentioned Washington specifically.

At this stage of his career, I totally understand his wanting to be in charge of where he goes.

  142. miggs August 25th, 2009 at 9:05 am

If you look at Wagner’s stats up until the surgery there is very little or no decline.

Now how he responds post-op is an unknown, and I doubt one appearance for the Mets will change anyone’s view.

If he proves he’s healthy I bet he gets that shot to close. Looking closely at his career, I think he’s earned that right.

  143. Frank from Chatham August 25th, 2009 at 9:05 am

    SJ44

You are assuming that Theo leaked the claim. What would have been his motive?

He’s smart and probably could foresee what you just conjectured. Maybe he wanted this ending in the long run just to shake up his staff.

  144. haiku-man August 25th, 2009 at 9:20 am

RS were all chest bumping each other after beating the Wht Sox win.

Contreas handed them literally 6 of the 12 runs scored with a meltdown in the 3rd.

Anyone can beat awful pitching.Their fans probably weren’t too impressed with the show boating, maybe they wish it was the Yankees instead!

Oh well to much to little too late.

  145. SJ44 August 25th, 2009 at 9:27 am

This is how the Red Sox operate Frank. They leak everything.

The Tex negotiations, the “almost” trades, all of the talk about their “vaunted” prospects. No doubt in my mind they leaked the waiver claim.

Why? To put pressure on Omar to just let him pass through.

They know the Mets have significant financial problems and they don’t want to give up anything to get Wagner.

They decide to go public with the waiver claim in order to strong arm the Mets into just giving up the player without compensation.

Unfortunately for them, Papelbon ran his mouth, Wagner decided that he and nobody else is going to control his destiny, and the entire thing got messed up.

Leaking is the Red Sox MO. Its cost them Tex and that may haunt them for years.

If Wagner holds firm until 1 pm today, it will cost them another player.

  146. haiku-man August 25th, 2009 at 9:30 am

I love it, on http://www.boston.com an article entitled,
Prepare for a wild finish.Bawstin conceded the Division race. They want to look more closely at the Rays and the Rangers. They want to back into post season!

  147. Trevor August 25th, 2009 at 9:36 am

do you have a link to the tex-letterman interview?

  149. Joe the Man August 25th, 2009 at 9:49 am

//Please Boston – beat this team in the ALDS for us. Thanks.//

Oh they will, and then they’e coming for you!!!!!! 2004 is all you need to remember! The BIGGEST CHOKERS in all-of-sports history: The New York Yankees.

We’re not too scared of CC and AJ. We’ve seen CC in the playoffs and we own AJ. I’d be very worried. Boston will again stand in your way of a Championship in 2009!

Boy this one’s going to hurt!

  150. Luco Brazza August 25th, 2009 at 11:43 am

    “Joe the WoMAN”

Yea…you need to make the playoffs first before you start talking 2004. News Flash for you. This team is different and you all know it.

  151. Maureen August 25th, 2009 at 2:15 pm

I don’t care what people in Boston & Los Angeles think about how the Yankees trumped them to get Tex on our team…I just love him,and he’s so cute…Plus, he’s a great baseball player..

For all you clowns who think winning a World Series is a criteria for appearing on the Letterman, think again..He was on Letterman because he’s a NYC fan fave..He’s playing on a great team, and he’s the MVP in the AL this year..Besides, he was invited to the Letterman Show..DUH…GET OVER IT…
