If Jerry misses your handshake, he might not dive back in time.

Very frustrating game last night.. I totally understand how bored other teammates get behind joba pitching.. he taks like 10 seconds between every pitch.. in fact it got so bad that I lost focus watching him and became more interested in talking to the guy sitting next to me.

What it seemed like to me is that he was “Way into his head”.. instead of pitching… that’s just my opinion of course.

But the bunt from Swisher with nobody out first/second.. such a dumb thing.. after the first attempt everyone around me was like.. “Are you kidding me?? they are smashing the ball.. ” it was a major momentum shift.. unreal.

Wonder why Nick has tweeted yet today!!!!

The bunt thing is a judgment call. If it had been successful, no one would be complaining.

I am soooo sick of watching Swisher and his clown antics (fumbling and bumbling all over the field, stupid facial expressions, etc.). That crap may play in the sticks, but this is the Yankees.

Two more years of this? Give me a break. Yes, I’m aware that he came over for Wilson Betemit, who was an infinitely worse player, but that is irrelevant. Betemit could have been jettisoned just by eating his contract.

Instead, the Yanks picked up Bobo the Clown.

If Swisher was hitting 300 and had 25 home runs, you wouldn’t care if he actually had the clown wig on

I wonder how Melky will do with the language barrier.

Cody Ransom will be selling beer in section 427A starting at 4:05 PM.

Nick Swisher’s web site says you can also meet him at the Gateway Best Buy in the Bronx this Fri, Aug 28th from 12-1pm. http://nickswisher.net/

I’ll admit it: watching the Yanks lose last night didn’t have the customary sting.

It kept the Rangers a game and a half behind Boston. The Yanks should still win the division handily (barring some sort of catastrophic collapse).

I would much rather see the Rangers win the WC than the Sox. Boston would be a tough out in the playoffs (tough lineup, front-end starters who can dominate and a lock-down bullpen).

Anyone notice that on yankees.com the rotation changed from Mitre going on Fri against Buehrle to now CC…I wonder if its correct

  15. bru August 26th, 2009 at 11:39 am

i hope wake gets pounded tonight

he according to reports is moving well enough to play.

he was brought up early in a panic move by the rs

  16. CountryClub August 26th, 2009 at 11:39 am

Actually, Laura, I would have complained even if he got it down because it was a dumb baseball play. Swisher is a horrible bunter and Melky is a below avg hitter in a horrible slump. The logical play was for Swish to swing away. On top of that they gave a struggling pitcher an out.

Now, if Melky was up with no outs and they wanted him to bunt to get to Jeter, then I could at least accept that strategy.

  17. CountryClub August 26th, 2009 at 11:43 am

Didnt have the usual sting? For me it was the worst loss of the year. I would have been happier if they lost 10 – 5. Some of you might remember that I’m not a commenter that complains about every little thing. But the way they lost last night p*ssed me off to no end for some reason.

Oh well, up to Andy tonight.

All things considered, Swisher has performed admirably. Don’t forget that he was supposed to be the 4th outfielder/backup 1b when the season started. Is he perfect, god no. And, he does make some indefensible mistakes, be it the base running in Boston, not getting the bunt down, ect., ect.. But over all he has been good for the Yankees and I’m glad they traded for him.

    going

  21. 86w183 August 26th, 2009 at 11:50 am

I can take the bunt or leave it, but it’s about EXECUTION. Swisher tried to bunt a high fastball on a 1-0 count and that’s just bad baseball. Even if it’s called a strike you force him to match that perfect location — I thought it would have been ball two.

Amazingly ironic that Melky and Hairston are there together. Swap CC for Swish and it would be perfect.

The best thing about last night is it’s the closest Joba has come to accepting responsibility for flushing a lead and costing his team a game. Now if he’ll just learn to throw fastballs inside for strikes he’ll get people out again. His last four games he’s pitched a total of 20 innings and given up 19 runs, with 17 K and 15 W.

  22. Matt August 26th, 2009 at 11:51 am

Do the do pictures or just autographs? would love to get a picture with cc and melky!!!!

  23. bru August 26th, 2009 at 11:53 am

    agreed on the bunt

bad play for this team with melky coming up.

cf production is hurting us this year big time

but if the bunt works we have 2 shots to win with jeter being one of them

    the worse case scenario happened

i just think letting swish swing was the right gut thing to do

  24. Eric August 26th, 2009 at 11:54 am

GREAT…I bought tickets for Saturday…going with one of my best friends. And we get to watch SERGIO MITRE pitch. Wonderful.

  25. PittsburghYankeeFan August 26th, 2009 at 11:55 am

Swisher has an OBP of close to .400 and will hit close to 30HR this season, and we’re complaining????

He also made a few good catches last night as well.

  26. just nod if you can hear me August 26th, 2009 at 11:59 am

my candidate for worst loss of the year: A.J. Burnett pisses away a 6-0 lead in Fenway, and gives up a grand slam to Jason Varitek in the process.

runner-up: Pettitte pitches a gem in Chicago, then muffs the easiest play he’ll have all year in the bottom of the 7th. The Yanks then proceed to play Bad News Bears defense for the remainder of the half-inning, and lose the game in agonizing fashion in the bottom of the ninth after Swisher had hit a dramatic two-out HR to tie the game in the top of the ninth.

  27. Eric August 26th, 2009 at 12:00 pm

Worst loss of the year was by far the first game in Fenway. Rivera gives up a 2-out, 2-run homer to Bay to tie it, and Marte serves one to Youk later on to lose it. That started the 0-8 nightmare.

  28. 86w183 August 26th, 2009 at 12:05 pm

    I’m with “just nod…” two good/bad choices

Swisher has been far better than I expected. Last night he made a terrific play on a sinking liner. Hard to quibble with an OPS of .847.

  29. bru August 26th, 2009 at 12:05 pm

marte 2 innings no hits/1 bb/3k since he came back

  30. SJ44 August 26th, 2009 at 12:09 pm

You can go either way with the bunt play. If Swisher hit into a DP, folks would be screaming, “why didn’t he bunt”.

If he gets the bunt down, its second and third, one out, Melky and Jeter coming up. Melky has been clutch all year and Jeter is the hottest hitter in the league at the moment.

As 86 said, it was about execution. Swish bunted ball 2, over his head, and didn’t get the job done. It happens.

The game was lost by the starting pitcher coughing up a 4 run lead and not seeing the 5th inning.

You usually don’t win a lot of those kind of games. They did a great job overcoming Joba’s ineptness and almost pulled it out.

  31. enough already August 26th, 2009 at 12:13 pm

.368 is close to .400? alrighty then.

I hear what you’re all saying: he’s been even a little better than advertised. Maybe I’m just letting last night’s momentum-killing horrid 9th inning AB cloud my overall assessment of Nick.

I didn’t agree with bunting in that situation to begin with, since Melky is prone to pop-ups to shallow left when he’s not locked-in. As it turned out, he hit a screaming liner that would’ve won the game in all likelihood if runners were at 2nd and 3rd (the infield would have been drawn-in).

Of course, I’m now falling victim to Michael Kay’s dreaded “Fallacy of the Predetermined Outcome”. I’ll just quit while I’m behind…

  32. EliGrba August 26th, 2009 at 12:20 pm

    bru

good test sampling on Marte 2 innings ,bringing his ERA down to a trim 11.05 mind you just in the nick of time.

  33. cr1 August 26th, 2009 at 12:39 pm

Hairston is living baseball history, with that family of players going back in an unbroken line to the Negro Leagues and forward through the major leagues to the present-day Yankees, so whether he is an individual hero or not, his picture or photograph should fit well into any baseball fan’s collection of memorabilia.

  34. Chili Davis August 26th, 2009 at 1:24 pm

I love Swisher. Gets on base, works the count, goes yard, and provides a great clubhouse presence. He has been very important to this team in a lot of ways.

  35. melky53 August 26th, 2009 at 6:28 pm

Uh, I was SUPPOSED to go to tonight’s game!
