Good stuff, but a bad result

Peter Abraham
August

Joe Girardi, Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez all said the same thing: A.J. Burnett was as good as they’ve seen him this season. The 12 strikeouts he recorded in six innings were a season high.

“Outstanding,” A-Rod said.

But Burnett took the loss and is now 0-4 in his last six starts with a 6.03 ERA. Right now, you’d want Andy Pettitte in Game 2 of a playoff series.

Burnett was perfect through 3.2 innings, Then walk, walk, home run. That was that as the Yankees never mounted much of an offense..

Here is Burnett talking about it. You might need all the volume you can muster because he was pretty quiet:

The Yankees had not lost a series at home since June 16-18 against the Nationals. They recovered from that and they should be able to recover from this.

    Hello, Jacob.

  2. Tank

MLBTR said the Yankees were the team that claimed Penny earlier in the year and the Sox pulled him back.

  3. Jim

    Molina another 0-4 performance

We’re really better with him rather than PO

  4. Giuseppe Franco

Burnett would pitch Game 2. Pettitte would pitch Game 3.

Girardi is just like Torre in his belief that Game 3 is the big swing game in the series.

So it would be Pettitte pitching that game.

  5. Tunnel Man

    Blame AJ, first.

  6. Peter Abraham

I find it amusing that people who come on the blog only to be trolls or to personally attack somebody always use fake e-mail addresses.

It must be some kind of sad life when you’re afraid to put your real e-mail address on a baseball blog or send somebody an e-mail. What a cowardly existence.

  7. BobK-NH

    Peter,
This may have been already asked, but do you think the Yankees have any chance of signing Brad Penny? I think he would be an upgrade over Mitre/Gaudin.

  8. Tom in N.J.

IMO, Pettitte would pitch game 3 and A.J. game 2. If for no other reaon then their home-road splits. Pettitte pitches better on the road and A.J. pitches better at home.

  9. Pov

The Yanks didn’t play all that well throughout the whole series. Pretty much the sins of the past returned, bad bullpen, too many walks, errors in the field and on the basepaths, a bushel of RISP left in each game, A Rod wiffing.

No Mo or Hughes, say alot about each game when you don’t get either of them in a game for several days.

  10. Mike

I think the whole reason that A.J kind of imploded was because of the ump calling the 3rd strike a ball. He would of struck him out and that would of ended the inning. But hey, wont be the first that the umps messed up a call and wont be the last.

  11. Pov

    Send Coke to Scranton

  12. Richie

AJ was good enough. The pen, not so much. Recall Melancon.

  13. Jim

    “Send Coke to Scranton”

    I wish.

  14. upstate kate

Why would the Yankees want Brad Penny?

We have a great team, but no team is going to win every game, or every series, even at home.

If the RS win tonight, so what? We still would be 5 games ahead, and will still have the best record in MLB. Tomorrow our ace pitches.

  15. Giuseppe Franco

Yeah, send Coke to Scranton. Great idea.

It’s not like the minor league season isn’t over soon.

    Good grief.

  16. Pov

The problem of the last few years continues to showup occasionally, how to bridge from a short SP stint to Hughes then Mo. Bruney and Coke and Robinson haven’t shown they can do it. If they want to win a championship it’s something they need to fix if they can.

  17. Bronx Jeers

They’s want Penny because they think he’s better than Mitre.

    And they’re probably right.

Plus you could get that 1 “game of vengeance” out of Penny if his spot falls against the Sox.

  18. Tom B

sorry Pete, but under no circumstances do we want to start a playoff series lefty lefty. just because Andy is pitching well now doesn’t mean ANYTHING towards changing playoff matchups.

The pen needs some serious work this September.

    Nobody trustworthy besides Hughes/MO

Have to develop a couple of guys who are reliable

    Yes it can.

  22. Jeremy

Well if the yankees do get Penny he would be an upgrade over Mitre and Gaudin. And he would only be used for a few weeks, and he might want revenge for what the Red Sox did to him.

  23. 7th Hour

Brad Penny can be a great weapon out of the pen… he could probably throw 98 if he has to pitch only 1 inning.

    Would be a great addition.

  24. Giuseppe Franco

People struggle. It happens, especially bullpen arms. And the Yanks have overcome those struggles a few times this season.

Coke has struggled at times but he’s done the job most of the time.

Robertson still walks too many but he’s got good stuff and has been fine.

They are going to get some more help next week with Melancon and others when the rosters expand.

Guys who are struggling now are not exempt from pitching their way through the rough patch.

This team has been resilient all season long. No reason to think they won’t be again.

  25. Giuseppe Franco

Brad Penny didn’t want to pitch out of the pen in Boston.

Maybe he won’t want to pitch out of the pen for the Yanks or anyone else, either.

But he’s probably a better option to start than Mitre or Gaudin.

  26. JFK

I thought Burnett pitched well today. He pitched good enough to win today, the oakland game and the blue jays game. The offense hasn’t really helped him out lately. Burnett pitches better at the stadium and Andy pitches better on the road. Burnett should pitch game 2.

  27. Joe from Long Island

Honestly, I’d take a try on Brad Penny. Heck, the Red Sox are paying the freight, after all. And he wouldn’t be pitching against the Yankee hitters. He’s no worse than Mitre or Gaudin, and possibly better. Might win us a game or two, and at this point in the season, that’s all that matters. Besides, he pitching for a contract for next year. He will be motivated.

  28. Mark

AJ is being his usual — .500 pitcher. Nothing new.

  29. JFK

Didn’t Penny rip Girardi. And he did throw at A-Rod I wonder how would they feel about signing him. I dont think he is really that big of an upgrade than Mitre/Gaudin.

  30. hughes wang small chacons

hell, we might want to have andy pitch the first game in a playoff series. we are gonna get a real rough lesson on what kinda post-season pitcher CC is. you can say that it’s a small sample size all you want, but when the only samples are consistent with each other it becomes a pattern.

  31. Dan

Penny didn’t really “rip” him… Girardi accused Penny of throwing at A-Rod and Penny responded by saying he doesn’t “Give a …..” what Girardi thinks

Not anything they couldn’t get over if he was acquired.

  32. Bronx Jeers

Well i don’t think it matters much anyway.

It seems there are teams interesrted in him and I’m sure the Sox would want to deal with them before he becomes available to the yanks.

  33. Past a diving Jeter

the yankees 2009 collapse is starting, worst yet? Doesn’t wagner use enter sandman as entrance? Imagine the red sox closing out the yankees on wagner w/enter sand man

  34. Rose

Francesa was right. AJ had a great year in his walk year. He got a great contract with the Yankees. But for his career he is basically a .500 pitcher, with an ERA around 4.00. Strikes out a lot of hitters, walks too many.

  35. BFARBS

speaking of red sox, the yankees claimed chris carter (player the sox sent to the mets for wagner) off waivers. not quite sure what to make of this. hell be pulled back i think but how does it affect the wagner trade? id love to have carter for the OF of the future

  36. Damon

Well Posada was vindicated today,AJ has no excuse.Thee game was lost with the 1st 3 runs, the others wa just exclamation points.

So it’s two games lossed,RS,and Rangers come out ahead,Yankees still have division leadfor (now any way.)

  37. raymagnetic

It’s a shame that Red Sox trolls have to resort to praying the Yankees fall apart.

  38. Doreen

The only positive to take out of this game is that the Yankees have been a resilient bunch and tomorrow really is another day.

Can we please lay the Posada/Molina/Cervelli discussion to rest? It’s so contentious that I literally get agita as I’m skimming the game posts. It’s like a constant bickering. I don’t understand why it has to come up every time Molina (or anyone else) catches; yet, Posada catches most of the games, and nothing is said when he catches a great game. All of the catchers have been involved in some great games and some not-so-great games. I beg, beg, BEG, this this topic be avoided in the future. It really takes away from my enjoyment of this blog.

So, two days ago it was the pitching that failed; today is was mostly the offense. AJ was very, very good. Though, walks hurt him, as they usually do. The bullpen (well, Phil Coke) put the nail in the coffin, but the offense never really got it going. Perhaps if the score stayed at 3-2, something might have happened, but I just never got that vibe today. 7 walks and 1 run – how do you let a pitcher off that easy? And Phil Hughes needs to pitch more or he’s going to be extremely rusty, no?

I hope the White Sox have a good game in them tonight, because then, at least, no harm, no foul, and in fact, the Rangers gain back some ground in the WC. However, are people still sure they want to face them in the playoffs?

Frankly, I think the Yankees are capable of defeating ANYONE they come up against in the playoffs, but I believe there will be at least one game per round where they will look like a team that should be anywhere but in the playoffs. That’s how the season has gone, it seems.

  39. Mark H

Carter was just pulled back by the sox, will be sent to the Mets in the offseason, really had no effect on the Sox, but the Mets don’t get to take a look at him for the last month.

  40. Jeremy

The yankees aren’t falling apart. Red Sox fans should be concerned about the Rangers and Rays because they aren’t winning the division. And so what if the yankees lose the series to the Rangers. It’s the first series they failed to win since the White Sox series.

  41. bg90027

    Pete,

Those stats are a little misleading. AJ has had 4 quality starts in those 6 games and 2 dreadfully bad ones which were 2 of his 3 worst starts of the year. The fact that he hasn’t won any of those games is not all on him. One of them as you surely recall was a 7 2/3 inning one hit gem against the Redsox. I’d certainly like to see more consistency and control from Burnett but the implication that he’s been awful over his last six starts just isn’t true. Maybe this is unfair but I get the feeling that if it were Wang or Hughes, you’d spin it differently.

I am here to guess on the final score of the Sux game.

    11-2 White Sox.

It sure looks like Tazawa has been figured out. Now we see whether he is poised enough to come back and shut things down or whether he gets pounded.

    I vote the second.

Oh yeah, this is why Big Fat is doing well. Now that he’s off the hook for ‘roids and nobody is tracking him down like a dog, a la Arod, and now that it appears that the goverment is going to have to hand over the results and they will be destroyed, Big Fat is fat and happy.

That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

Wonder if Wagner will stand near Papelcrap in the bullpen.

    :)

didn’t the whole thing start because some females on the blog liked cervelli’s eyes?

how can anyone take it seriously as a baseball argument?

    GO WHITE SOX!

    Have a good night y’all.

    Pete,

First time commenter, love the blog. I do think you’re being a bit hard on AJ though, as many in the NY media (and many Yankee fans) are. AJ still has the highest QS percentage of any NYY starter, and outside of Fenway, his numbers are far better than even Sabathia. Lately, as another poster pointed out, he’s been a victim of non-existent run support. In his last five starts, the Yankees have scored 0, 3, 0, 0, and 2 runs while he’s been in the game. He’s earned a game 2 playoff start without question.

Also, regarding today’s game, I think we can all agree that the HP ump missed a called 3rd strike on Hamilton. That doesn’t excuse AJ walking Cruz, but even after that, he took what I’d call a reasonable gamble in grooving a first pitch fastball to Kinsler–he just got beat. To that point in the game, NO Ranger had swung at a first pitch, and logic would dictate that after two walks, that trend would continue. It didn’t, and it ended up costing the Yankees the game, but I think it’s a stretch to say that AJ didn’t pitch well based on that 2-batter sequence.

  46. Jason

That called third strike that was called a ball, cost the Yankees the game, you could see it physically upset AJ and cost him the perfect game through 4,
after that walk then the HR, that K happens and he’s got the no hitter going into the 5th, but offense wise we keep leaving runners in scoring position, and by we I mean Cano.
