Wait a minute…Did Robbie Cano just come through with RISP?!?!?!?!?!

    CANO !!!

  7. Psyluk August 28th, 2009 at 10:31 pm

Did anyone else think “He is going to get drilled tomorrow” when they saw Robbie standing at the plate like Manny Ramirez?

  8. Mac Daddy August 28th, 2009 at 10:31 pm

i think the sox will throw at cano tomorrow after his pose

  9. Abdababdaserser August 28th, 2009 at 10:32 pm

    Was that Cano being Manny?

  10. Yay! August 28th, 2009 at 10:32 pm

I’m so happy for Robbie! I will sleep well tonight.

  11. Keith August 28th, 2009 at 10:33 pm

YES!!! what a way to end the game!! Nice job Robbie!

  12. TD August 28th, 2009 at 10:34 pm

    Nice win. Good for Robbie.

    Time to March on!

  13. Joe August 28th, 2009 at 10:34 pm

Notice how Pete goes away quietly with his tail between his legs. Great blog, Pete, but do you really have to post Cano’s BA with RISP every single time he comes up in that situation? It got really old 2 months ago. The man has 2 walks offs in the past couple weeks for christ sake.

  14. Psyluk August 28th, 2009 at 10:34 pm

Let’s hope the rain delay in Boston lasts in the wee hours of the morning and that Aaron Hill takes care of the rest.

  15. Tim August 28th, 2009 at 10:35 pm

Matt Thorton threw 42 pitches today… probably unavailable tomorrow.

  16. PittsburghYankeeFan August 28th, 2009 at 10:35 pm

Kazmir to the Angels. I guess nobody wanted to block it. Why the Rays are giving up on him is beyond me. Salary dump a starting pitcher in his prime? Must be something we don’t know…

  17. Shari August 28th, 2009 at 10:36 pm

WOOO! HOOO! It was bound to happen eventually! ROBBIE!!!!

  18. stuart August 28th, 2009 at 10:36 pm

can’t believe arods stayed in the yard. good for Cano, he does not do that often. If he could be better with RISP, you are talking star..

    great win….tampa lost…..texas may lose…

    another day off the schedule….

  19. Zach August 28th, 2009 at 10:37 pm

“Salary dump a starting pitcher in his prime? Must be something we don’t know…”

Maybe its the decreasing velocity and K rate? or the elbow issues every year? or the fact he cant go 6 innings?

  20. Betsy August 28th, 2009 at 10:38 pm

CB, in response to your post from the prior thread………the Yankees power is good for the regular season. In the post-season? Not so much. In the last several playoff series, their offense has been completely shut down by good pitching. If they don’t find a way to score without hitting HRs, they won’t go very far.

  21. Wolf In Pinstripes August 28th, 2009 at 10:38 pm

Wow. Hell officially froze over. Gracias, Cano.

  22. PittsburghYankeeFan August 28th, 2009 at 10:38 pm

Remember this “reverse jet stream” come October. This stadium is going to play very interestingly…

Three home runs any other time of the year, all caught on the warning track…

  23. Pat M. August 28th, 2009 at 10:38 pm

Patrick, I’m guessing that Robbie Cano didn’t waste or gave away that ab…..

  24. jennifer August 28th, 2009 at 10:38 pm

stuart, not sure that we have to worry about Tampa or Texas.

We just need to get our magic number down.

  25. Tim August 28th, 2009 at 10:39 pm

It’s not just good pitching that shut us down in October… so did Paul Byrd, Bonderman (ERA over 4 that year), Kenny Rogers etc.

  26. grafxkid August 28th, 2009 at 10:39 pm

wow pujols just hit a walk off to win the game. why did they pitch to him?! funny thing also, the crowd just doesn’t seem as loud as the stadium just was for some reason. the stadium has really come alive. this team is destined for 27 this year. I love this game!!

  27. jennifer August 28th, 2009 at 10:40 pm

Who is that moron who wrote into MY9. The red soxs have more heart than the yankees? Um has he watched one game this season. For most of the games the yankees fight till the last out to win. They’d lost 1 series at home since June! Yep no heart.

  28. PittsburghYankeeFan August 28th, 2009 at 10:40 pm

    Zach

This could be true, but he kills the Yankees and Sox, of which the Rays play 13 times in the next five weeks, and they could have traded him in the offseason, correct?

Are the Rays trying to make the playoffs, or dump salary?

  29. m August 28th, 2009 at 10:40 pm

Aw, leave the poor kid alone. It’s not easy.

Salary concerns, wanting to sign Crawford to an extension?

Thank goodness Cano ended this game in the 10th. Is Hairston our backup catcher until Posada plays or until Tuesday when Cervelli comes back up?

  31. REZ August 28th, 2009 at 10:41 pm

Have the Sox even announced their starter for tomorrow? ESPN, MLB.COM, Yahoo all say TBD.

Probably a strategic move so that we won’t be able to scout him ahead of time… but doesn’t MLB have rules about announcing starters prior to their start?

  32. Betsy August 28th, 2009 at 10:41 pm

Tim, that’s true, but that’s not the point. The point is, you can’t depend on HRs to get through the post-season. Swinging for the fences is a bad habit that the Yankees would do well to break……….

  33. Alex August 28th, 2009 at 10:41 pm

The MY9 Postgame may be the worst thing I have ever watched in my life.

Ozzie said that it’s either Carrasco or Contreras.

  36. jennifer August 28th, 2009 at 10:42 pm

yankee trader, but why would you trade away young pitching? they made the mistake of getting rid of Edwin Jackson.

In my mind they think that something is really wrong with him and found a sucker to take him.

  37. m August 28th, 2009 at 10:42 pm

Well, Kazmir could find his way back to being an elite pitcher. And in the off chance he does, Tampa saves $$ and plugs in another one of their top prospects.

  38. Erica - always OPPC August 28th, 2009 at 10:42 pm

Just drove through a completely insane downpour trying to get home on Long Island.

Couldn’t believe my ears when John & Suzy said that it was barely raining at the Stadium and they thought the storm missed New York. Meanwhile, it was raining so hard I was contemplating pulling over to the side of the road

  39. Abdababdaserser August 28th, 2009 at 10:42 pm

Betsy, what is with you ALWAYS looking to have something to cry about? The Yankees get a walkoff win with a home run and you are talking about how the offense will shut down in the playoffs.

A hangnail turns into a life threatening injury. Jeeze, you must have a tough life where nothing goes right.

Was the Phillies offense shut down last year?

Here’s a little clue, you need pitching and offense to win games. Balance.

  40. Tim August 28th, 2009 at 10:43 pm

Betsy – Oh, I agree 100%… just pointing out that any pitcher can shut down an offense with the “HR or bust” mentality. :D

  41. Pat M. August 28th, 2009 at 10:43 pm

Betsy, your points about offensive blackouts during the 06 & 07 playoffs are noteworthy….However this kineup is deeper, and all around a better offensive unit….Time will only tell…..I’m 20 games away from 100 wins and my $ 190.00 return on a 100.00 investment

    ———–

I agree that the Cano hate is way over the top. But let’s drop the race card stuff.

You cannot deny he hasn’t been the same hitter with RISP this season.

For whatever reason, he just hasn’t done the job very often. It’s legitimate criticism but people often take it to a ridiculously extreme level on this board.

Of course, they do it for most everything else, too.

  43. grafxkid August 28th, 2009 at 10:44 pm

Carl, they gain a chance to win. idc what team it is. its not smart. and they paid for it. there’s no quit if you’re the best or worst team. you gotta play smart. period.

  44. Zach August 28th, 2009 at 10:44 pm

They could have waited to trade him. But he’s had a few good outings recently, so his value was at its highest so far this year and they dealt him, rather than him getting hurt/ being ineffective again and being stuck with him when they need room to pick up Crawford’s option, and Bartlett, Upton, Howell, Garza all go to arb this year

  45. Laura August 28th, 2009 at 10:44 pm

  48. JFK August 28th, 2009 at 10:46 pm

Cano had a walkoff a couple of weeks ago. He wasn’t due he is just a great hitter.

Anyone in Boston? Any chance this game gets played?

  50. Zach August 28th, 2009 at 10:46 pm

Betsy- it was a walk off HR, a little different than the 3rd or 5th inning. stop your complaining

  51. PittsburghYankeeFan August 28th, 2009 at 10:46 pm

Kazmir actually has gone 6 plus in 8 of his last nine starts since July 8th. Three stinkers, the rest good. He’s 4-0 against the Yankees and Sox this year.

Weird move by the Rays. Guess they are looking more at 2010, with trying to sign Crawford?

This does make the Angels better, especially against the Sox and Yankees. Long term, who knows…

  52. Scotty August 28th, 2009 at 10:47 pm

Salzburg making excuses for Joba… says he can’t be on that crazy schedule.

  53. A-Bomb August 28th, 2009 at 10:48 pm

This was an excellent move by LA. Get the pitcher who dominates your 2 biggest October rivals and a guy who could be a potential ace for you and replace Lackey next year.

  54. Betsy August 28th, 2009 at 10:48 pm

    Pat M, I agree with you there……..

LOL Suzyn and John actually said it was barely raining? Man, it was coming down in buckets…….I guess it’s always sunny in their world.

  55. Yay! August 28th, 2009 at 10:48 pm

  56. Laura August 28th, 2009 at 10:48 pm

“Did you see Robbie’s pose? Wow……..we can’t criticize Manny now.”

Robbie’s wasn’t as bad as Manny’s. Robbie posed for a few seconds and then started running. Manny would stand at the plate for a full minute before he made his way to 1st.

  57. Yankee Trader August 28th, 2009 at 10:48 pm

“In my mind they think that something is really wrong with him and found a sucker to take him.”

    Jennifer-

I believe Kazmir is owed 20M over next 2 years, and hasn’t pitched much better than Brad Penny this year. He has a 5.92 ERA. They could pick up Penny on Monday for peanuts and use that money for Crawford and Pena.

I think getting the no1 draft pick is more important for the Nationals. Winning a game in August is not when you’re 30 plus under .500

  59. Betsy August 28th, 2009 at 10:48 pm

Zach, I think you completely missed my point, but whatever at this point.

  60. Dan August 28th, 2009 at 10:49 pm

Heard the tarp was being moved on the field, but it could have been just to dump the water.

  70. GreenBeret7 August 28th, 2009 at 10:50 pm

Betsy, look at the pitchers that NYY has been hitting these homers off of. They aren’t all dogs. Also, not every hatd swing is a batter trying to hit homers. For the most part, they’re controlled swings designed to drive the ball. NYY doesn’t have a bunch of home run hitters. They have a bunch of hitters that hit the ball hard and Cano, Jeter and Damon are three of them. Swisher, and lately, Cabrera, are the two most promenant players that tend to swing from the heels. Look at Cano’s hits and you’ll see that he hits as often to the opposite field as he pulls. Most of his homers are from right center to left field.

What is with batters getting hit in the head this year?

  73. m shirt August 28th, 2009 at 10:50 pm

Ya I’m kinda surprised at the Rays for dealing Kazmir as well. He is making huge money (by Rays’ standards) and his velocity us down. But they went to the World Series with this guy last year, and is an integral part of their rotation this year, in the middle of a playoff push. There’s a key piece of the puzzle that I feel like I’m missing with this trade.

  74. TD213 August 28th, 2009 at 10:50 pm

Luckily the score is tied in Boston, if the Sux were ahead, they would have waited maybe 15 minutes then called the game.

  77. JFK August 28th, 2009 at 10:51 pm

I agree with Salzberg. Joba at times struggles with command of his pitches. Him going on 10 days rest had trouble written all over it. He needs to stay in a normal routine. Even veteran pitches would struggle with what they were trying to do with Joba. Its a better idea just taking him out early in some games and having Gaudin as his caddy.

Cano is supremely talented, probably more so than most anyone on the roster. It’s great to see him come through as he did. Hopefully, no more of the “Guess he was due” comments. Most likely, the “posing” (so what) will be the next wave of criticism.

He is a pleasure to watch and root for.

I’m not complaining I like the pose, I think it’s ok to have a player with attitude even if it comes off as “cocky”

I don’t know why you guys complain. We just won a game, rejoice people! -__-

Tomko with a 5-1 lead. I wouldn’t even want to play anymore if I were on the Angels.

He’s pitched well since he went to Oakland.

He came into the game with a 3.40 ERA. Not too shabby for a scab.

I love the Cano pose, you guy’s shouldn’t complain about it. It’s unheard of to complain about the pose in the midst of a victory.

Really Lame for the guys who are complaining.

Kenny Rogers was great in the 2006 postseason. He shut down every team he faced. (Yankees, A’s, Cardinals) He had an 0.00 era. Any team can be shut down by good pitching even if your a team that plays small ball or long ball. You just need to pitch well in the postseason and take advantage of mistakes.

kazmir has a violent delivery and is injury prone. His mechanics make him a strong candidate for shoulder woes in the near future. Kazmir has promise, but his time on the DL tells another story. It’s definitely a high risk high reward situation tho.

I agree that the Cano hate is way over the top. But let’s drop the race card stuff.
