Today in The Journal News
Joe Girardi was impressed with Sergio Mitre back in spring training and that faith paid off again yesterday as he combined with Chad Gaudin on a one-hitter in a victory against the White Sox. Josh Thomson has the story.
Jorge Posada is expected back behind the plate today. This notebook also has an updates on Derek Jeter, Brett Gardner and an angry Ozzie Guillen.
The Mets are the subject of the Baseball Beat. Does Fred Wilpon need to fire Omar Minaya?

I remember sitting there forever in the rain waiting for them to make a decision the last time around – my sister and I take my mom to one game a year and that was it. At least she’ll get to go to the stadium twice this year
We’re also going to that last Yankee-Red Sox game (which should mean nothing for the Yankees!!
)

i hope your right
as long as we keep winning.
the rs worry me for one reason
the pain from losing to them is overwelming.
if becket & clay get fixed they will be tough
lets see beckets & clays next start
IMO, the fact that Minaya may not be fired is just as likely about the fact that the expectations for the Mets are always lower than those for the Yankees. The fans – and the media – use a double standard when judging the Yankees and the Mets. Omar and Wilpon (and Manuel to a lesser degree because he’s been 99% Teflon) have taken their share of lumps this season, but the intensity of the outrage is nowhere the heat of the backpages when the Yankees lose one series on the road.
To be fair, the injuries that have decimated the Mets are beyond belief. Yet when the Yankees went through a similar streak of injuries the media and fans all but forced a lynching of the strength and conditioning coach and certain regulars around here – you know who you are
– used the Yankee injuries as just another justification to fire Cash Money.
At the same time one gets the sense that the Mets have been throwing money at problems like the Yankees used to, and maybe still do to a lesser extent, without a sound business plan in place. Starting over and blowing up the Met front office makes some sense, if that’s the real problem.
This situation reminds me of when the Yankees hired Bob Watson as GM. IMO, somebody strong and savvy needs to come in and put an end to the chaos. The Mets need a new, professional atmosphere like Watson gave the Yankees, fighting off ham fisted owners and restoring business sense to the front office.
I wouldnt be surprised if the front office for the Mets is restructured this offseason with John Ricco promoted to GM and Omar Minaya doing more of the scouting side of things. That way you dont have to re-tool the entire front office which I have read costs 10-15 million dollars. If the Mets are strapped for cash, it will make much more sense to use it for players on the field instead of a new front office.
