Penny now a free agent

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Aug 31, 2009 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

As expected, Brad Penny has gone unclaimed and is now a free agent.

He was not especially good for the Red Sox (7-8, 5.61) but he is still throwing 95. Do you think the Yankees should make a play for him?

I would say no — unless Sergio Mitre’s bruised right arm is an actual issue. Penny would be smart to go the John Smoltz route and retreat back to the National League.

UPDATE, 4:09 p.m.: Penny signed with the Giants.

He throws 95. That’s great. But he has one pitch. It’s the same speed and it’s straight. May have been good enough to beat the Yankees a few months ago, but it’s been good enough to beat nobody the past couple months. At least, nobody in this league.

Rosenthal says the Giants are the favorite for Penny. It would make sense for him to go there since that’s his best chance to reach the postseason. There’s a much more likely chance that the Giants will be playing meaningful games deep into September than the Marlins, and I head the Rockies weren’t interested. I never took the Penny staying in the AL talk too seriously, unless someone claimed him.

Why is anyone even entertaining john locke. He used the word logic and Mark Reynolds for MVP in the same sentence. Either he has no idea what logic means or he is just trolling for responses.

    ______________

Either you are illiterate or don’t understand sarcasm..I’m gonna say both, because I said NO SUCH THING.

Either way, nobody asked you.. Unless you have something to counter my points with, go away.

Yeah I’m trolling on a YANKEE board.. A board I post on everyday.. And Defending Jeter over Mauer for MVP. If I was a troll, wouldn’t it be the other way around?

    Gee another winner.

  7. ditmars1929 August 31st, 2009 at 3:04 pm

Penny should definitely go back to the NL. And as for his 95 speed, Krazy Kyle had that too, so there you go. Yanks don’t need him.

  8. Tom B August 31st, 2009 at 3:04 pm

penny is not better than anyone. i don’t care how hard he can throw he can’t, and never has been able to except for one season for LA.

plus, he was granted his release on the stipulation that he does not sign with an AL team. come on guys, the news is out there you just gotta READ it.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! We don’t need his 95 mph fastball. Not a good fit on this 2009 Yankees team.

Just say No to Penny. The Yankees can survive with their in-house options. The more important thing is to fix Joba.

    Thank you, Tom B.

  25. Blueshirt Brawler August 31st, 2009 at 3:16 pm

I see no need for the Yankees to add Brad Penny. If they had bullpen woes maybe they could convert Penny into a bullpen guy but with Robertson, Hughes and Bruney I think the Yankees have enough RH power arms in the pen.

  26. BG#11 August 31st, 2009 at 3:17 pm

Penny’s secret is out he has a good fastball so look for it early in the count. Any good major leaguer can rock a fastball taht they can get ahold of. He doesn’t fit for this Yankees team.

    ___

The two of them can pick up each other, after a drunk night or who pitched worse.

  32. E-gawa August 31st, 2009 at 3:21 pm

My initial reaction was no BUT I’m not sold on Mitre yet. He was great his last start but it takes more than one start. Penny has shown a few times this season that he can pitch 6 innings. His era sucks but we have an offense to combat that this year. And just incase Mitre does start to heat up, we can use Penny as a back up on Joba starts.. Why waste Ace on those games?

Flat 95 MPH fastballs tend to get hit a long, long way. We proved that against Penny. We shouldn’t let other teams prove against us with him wearing pinstripes.

He is not going to match his .301/43/144 line from 2005.
He might not even match his 121 RBI total from last year unless he has a hot September.
He may also have the lowest or 2nd lowest BA of his career.

Washburn is garbage. Good thing the Yankees didn’t trade for him. The Rays are beating down the Tigers right now.

  47. rconn23 August 31st, 2009 at 3:38 pm

    Brandon,

    From the last thread…

You can’t possibly be serious about replacing Pena replacing Jeter.

Any defensive upgrade that Pena would provide, and it’s not that much, would be FAR overshadowed by the gaping offensive hole you’d have by taking Jeter out of the lineup.

As I said before, Cashman would have many more trade options to fill the gap at first base if Teixera had not come to the team.

Jeter was scoring 100 runs a season, getting on base a ton, and a premiere tablestter long before Tex came to the team.

The difference between Swisher versus Tex and Pena verus Jeter is astronomical in terms of offense.

Pena is not even a league average bat. In fact, he’s far below it.

  48. Chambliss August 31st, 2009 at 3:54 pm

I added Washburn to my fantasy team because he has two starts this week. Big mistake. He gave up 6 runs in the first inning. He would have been a disaster with the Yankees.

As for Penny, let him go to the Giants.

  49. Wave Your Hat August 31st, 2009 at 3:55 pm

Tex has had a great season but he’s not the Yankee MVP.

You have to take position into account, of course. Jeter is much, much better than the average AL SS. Tex is a much smaller amount better than the average AL 1B. Jeter’s comparative advantage is too great for Tex’s better numbers to overcome.

  50. Stateman52 August 31st, 2009 at 4:50 pm

No Yankee will win the MVP award.

  51. Cutter42 August 31st, 2009 at 4:59 pm

Jeter is not a MVP and was never one.TExiera is our MVP (Even though Mauer will win it).

Jeter is having a great season one of he’s best but he’s still 35.Remember Jorge best year it came at age 36 back in 2007.

  52. haiku-man August 31st, 2009 at 5:31 pm

Mlbtraderumors are saying Penny being added to the Giants, makes them the best Pitcing rotation in MLB.

They are tied for the wild card,as of yesterday Rockies lost.
