To quote Vizzini: “Inconceivable!”

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Sep 01, 2009 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

vizziniMariano Rivera has allowed one earned run since June 16. His line since then:

28 innings
13 hits
1 earned run
6 walks
29 strikeouts

Opponents have hit .135 against him during that stretch. The man throws one pitch, is 39 and had shoulder surgery last fall. If years from now it was learned he was some sort of advanced alien life form, would you really be surprised?

Meanwhile, Nick Swisher has not hit a home run at Yankee Stadium since June 8. He has hit three in the Bronx all season, as many as he has at Camden Yards this year.

The Yankees are 35 games over .500. That’s their best since they finished the 2004 season 101-61.

On a side note, I just typed in yahoo.com to check my email, and the breaking story is that the Duggars are expecting their 19th child. Can someone please stop the insanity?

  19. GGBG (Magic Number: 26) September 1st, 2009 at 1:59 pm

The only team that gives him trouble at all is Boston. Everyone else goes down like they brought wet noodles or nerf bats up to the plate.

Even the hits he gives up are always to bizarre places because they are fisted egg balls, jam shots, broken bats etc…

Seriously, who in baseball gets weaker outs than Mariano?

I’m hearing that the callups are Michael Dunn, Francisco Cervelli, Ramiro Pena and Mark Melancon. If true then Melancon will be happy that Dunn comes up now…because Dunn will be junior man and will have to wear the “pink backpack” until a younger rookie comes up.

Right now, it looks like Dunn, Cervelli, Pena and Melancon are the only “hazing-eligible” rookies on the team. I hope they bring up more…I can still remember the “Wizard of Oz” class of rookies. That was the best hazing ever. By the way, does anyone else think that Romulo Sanchez would make a great Darth Vader and Andrew Brackman would make a great Chewbacca?

No clue. He pitched Friday against the Valley Cats and did really well. It was a mess that day too weather wise so I dont even think they ended up finishing the game until Saturday.

Not to discredit how well Cotham pitched, but at this point, anyone could step in and pitch against the Valley Cats and do well. They are a terrible team and I hope Albany ships them out next year. At least bring in some baseball that people care about.

  48. CountryClub September 1st, 2009 at 2:19 pm

His performance hasnt suffered, but I think he’s going through a dead arm period right now. Over his last two appearances he’s been throwing 89 – 90. For most of the year he’s been 91 – 93.

Or…his shoulder is still bothering him. Let’s hope that’s not the case.

Welcome all to the first GTLU game with me, benfica356. Erica has brought a great tradition to the blog, but has stepped down for the rest of the year due to personal reasons. Erica has nominated me to take over the game and Today will mark a new beginning to this game, with an extended time limit(60 min to 90 min) and some more varities of lineups due to the September Call-ups. So now its time to play GTLU till 3:30 PM. Thank you and have a great day.

“I’m sorry, but I doubt it highly that God wants people having 19 kids.”

You would think that the God you speak of would have made one of the parent’s sterile by now if this God didn’t want them to have 19 kids.

I believe the source isn’t concerned with how many children you conceive. They probably live a very abundant life which is how they’re able to have so many children.

  65. baseballfab September 1st, 2009 at 2:25 pm

Rivera to me is like Bruschi, the PERFECT BALLPLAYER. They are both one of a kind

  66. Christina September 1st, 2009 at 2:25 pm

Laura: Even better is they are all home-schooled. How 1 lady can teach 19 children at all different levels by herself is befuddling. It actually is degrading if you are in that profession because teaching 15-20 kids all at the same level is a challenge in itself. Some lady with no college education thinks she is qualified to do this is sickening. Not to say these kids arent being educated correctly, but I just cant see how well it can really work.

I guess if they didnt have a show about it on TV, I wouldnt find myself as annoyed. I am sure it happens all over the world, but they dont plaster their life for the public to see. Bragging about their homeschooling practice is what puzzles and annoys me at times. Again, a teacher so I am biased.

All in all, to each their own I guess. I just hope those kids are getting the best education that they should be getting.

GGBG, I was referring to how you references all of the weak hits people get off of him.

Which is completely true, they get a lot of sucker hits off of him. And yes, no one in baseball gets hit more on “sucker hits” than on nicely placed line drives or home runs, in comparison. You went 180 degrees with your question, hence it was confusing, I thought you meant the opposite.

I would NOT call his strike outs “sucker outs.”

    ANSKY September 1st, 2009 at 2:31 pm

Christina – I have a six-month old and she requires attention almost all the time. My wife and I tag team to get it done. That’s just ONE six month old. That lady having 19 kids, and home schooling them means she’s not sleeping, doing TONS of drugs, and/or they’re all going to get their GEDs in their 50’s. And the mom might not get hers until she’s in her 70’s.
    —-
So true, Ansky- especially with her having several infants and toddlers in the picture. Not sure how she manages to get it done. In NY you have to be deemed “competent” to homeschool and it is quite a process. Even then, the term competent is used very lightly. I almost have to think Arkansas homeschooling rules are very loose.

    Peter,
I have always disagreed with this stuff about Rivera throwing one pitch. He uses that cutter to lefties but throws a two and four seem fastball to hit the outside corner on lefties and righties. He is also now throwing a slider to righties.
His control of his pitches and placement up and down has always been an asset.
The ability to control both sides of the plate is rare in any pitcher.

Maybe it’s been discussed already but the Yankees have decided to join the rest of the world in allowing people to enter Yankee Stadium with a small bag.

    “Bags and Backpacks
Diaper bags, small backpacks, small purses and bags are permitted. However, in accordance with Major League Baseball security regulations, bags larger than 16 x 16 x 8 inches will not be allowed into the Stadium. Briefcases, large backpacks, large purses and bags, coolers and hard-sided bags and containers are also not permitted. All bags must be thoroughly inspected before they are permitted into the Stadium. Box templates shall be used at inspection points, and bags and their contents must fit without assistance, modification or adjustment. The Yankees reserve the right to inspect any bags, clothing or other articles prior to entry into Yankee Stadium and prohibit entry or require removal of any items the Yankees deem inappropriate or potentially injurious to Yankee Stadium, other patrons or field personnel.”

For the umpteenth time, Mariano Rivera does not “throw one pitch.” Unless there’s no distinction made between a cutter, a sinker, and high heat, that is.
Mo has got a bunch of variations of his cutter, depending on the grip he uses, particularly where he places his thumb.
