Cotto-Pacquiao press conference to be held at the Stadium

Peter Abraham
September
4

This from the Yankees:

On Thursday, September 10 at noon, Yankee Stadium will host a press conference on the field to announce the upcoming boxing match between Miguel Cotto and Manny Pacquiao, taking place on November 14, 2009, at the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas.

Gates will open at 11:00 a.m. to the public for the free event, with the press conference slated to begin at noon.

———–

Hopefully this event is a precursor to an actual fight taking place at the Stadium. That would be a great event to see. The old Stadium, as you know, hosted some historic fights over the years.

Pacquiao is the most exciting fighter in the sport right now and he would draw a ton of people if he ever fought at the Stadium.

    it’s a nice read

They should have Pacquiao and Mayweather fight at the Stadium. Doubt it would happen though :(

“Good points about Bruney, SJ and Cash ……thanks for explaining and not attacking me.”

    Betsy,
You’re welcome. One more thing, if you look at recent playoff history, you will see most AL clubs that are successful in the playoffs do so with 5-6 bullpen guys they use in each of their series. The NL teams usually have 6-7 relievers because of pinch-hitting situations that the AL manager doesn’t have to worry about until the WS, with games being played in the NL ballpark.

Right now, I see Girardi sticking with Rivera, Hughes, Aceves, Robertson, Marte and Coke. Joba might get a relief appearance in the first round due to what I stated earlier about the Yankees having the opportunity to space out their games with off days in between gamedays. After the first round, Girardi will still probably stick mainly to those six guys with maybe, Bruney or Gaudin getting some garbage innings in a blowout game.

    LETS GO PACQUIAO!

  5. Jimmy

I was having a discussion about this the other day with some friends. If there were a brawl, in which all the MLB managers were involved, you would have to take Girardi as the favorite to win it all, right?

I’d love to see it. Pacquiao fights primarily in Vegas because he’s such a big star and attracts a lot of high rollers to his fights (and subsequently the casino), but if he fights in Yankee Stadium (or MSG), it would be a massive event.

“Ladies night, huh… Lost my mom, a huge Yankees/Jeter fan Monday. Took 2 teenage girls to the game tonight and sat on the 3rd base line. Even paid a lot of money for the tix. What did we experience? Rude Jays fans…

Yankees fans are tough, we take the jeers for ARod, Jeter, et al while cheering on our team. But f-bombs and other rude language are uncalled for. When I subtetly let on to the usher the language being used was unacceptable, he issued them a warning. OK. Then an inning later more ushers came and escorted two of the offenders (there were at least 6) out. And then they came back. And accused us of blowing them in (it was others in the crowd, Jays fans all). And then tried to intimidate us. We left bottom of the 8th and stayed up top to watch ARod homer. Where we would have been sitting. Huh.

We love Rogers Centre because were upstate fans and that is a great place to watch our favorite team. We will go again but sit behind the Yankee dugout where we usually sit. But then again, it that “safe”? Ask Alfredo.”

Thanks for the article, Rishi – it was a very nice read.

Based on the last thread, couldn’t we hold a match at YS featuring a Blue Jay fan vs. someone from the Yankee bullpen?

  10. Chris N

They should put Cotto at the stadium sometime. He would really draw in the Bronx. He already fills up MSG every June. If they could ever get a Cotto-Margarito rematch up there, it would be huge. I doubt they’ll ever fight again though.

  11. ADam

Wish the Klichtsko(sp) Bros would fight at Yankee Stadium

Ozzie Guillen can’t be underestimated. He’d be like a rabid dog.

  13. hey kelvin says

    Eric Hinske vs. Anyone?

    Takers?

  14. Wait till the ALDS

In an MLB managers brawl, I’d have to take Ozzie. Girardi is tough. Ozzie is scary.

    sorry for your loss.

I was in Baltimore early this year. This was when some idiots were making foam syringes and selling them. Well one section over one guy was being particularly obnoxious with them, using them as a male part of the male anatomy if you will. People complained, my friend and I went to complain and he was finally removed to cheering by Yankee fans, and jeering by O’s. We no less than 1/2 inning later he waltzes back in like a hero to cheers from the O’s. My friend was incensed, but nothing was done. If he was tossed why was he allowed to return? I have to say Yankee stadium security (from what I’ve seen) does a very good job with problems. Other stadiums around the league seem to have issues.

  16. saucY

Ozzie came to mind too. Girardi is in shape, but tiny, no?

  17. jennifer

Joe Girardi: Joe’s wife, Kim, and Kid Styles of Bedford Hills are hosting an event on Saturday, Sept. 12 at the Stadium to support awareness of stomach cancer. Blue hair extensions will be sold at two booths as will raffle tickets to win one of four items signed by the manager. All proceeds go to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer of Northwestern University. Joe’s sister-in-law was diagnosed with stomach cancer, and he says she’s doing well. He also says he’ll be wearing a blue extension that day

    http://kimberlyjones.mlblogs.com/

I thought the end was cute, Joe is going to wear a hair extension. HOW? He has a buzz cut. :-)

  18. Wait till the ALDS

Oh, haha…very nice of you jennifer, but that post is not about me…we were just having this discussion in the previous thread and wouldn’t you know it, someone on Kim Jones’ blog wrote this.

    Point taken however.

This was posted on Rotoworld, in case anyone missed it.

“Brett Tomko surrendered six runs and three homers in 5 2/3 innings Thursday in a loss to the Mariners.

Now that’s much more like it. Tomko had somehow managed to go 2-0 with a 1.62 ERA in three starts for the A’s.”

It seems it just took a little longer for the change in time zones to catch up to him.

  20. w/e

Incredible stat showing just how dominate this year’s Yankee team is:

the Yanks have only lost five games in which their starting pitcher has given them a quality start (6 IP, 3 ER or less).

  21. jennifer

    oh, sorry. :-)

  22. Wait till the ALDS

    No worries, jennifer.

  23. tampayank

it would be a huge Pro-Cotto crowd if the fight was switched to the Bronx b/c of the huge Puerto Rican population in the Bronx/NYC

  24. tampayank

Cotto is a fun fighter to watch, a warrior, the Pac man-Cotto fight will get higher ratings than the Mayweather-Marquez in a few weeks

  25. saucY

    Hey Pete,

Whatever happened to today’s “Today in the Journal News” post?

  26. saucY

is it a slow day here? or just a lot less trolls around?

  27. Wait till the ALDS

Holy crap,I just found an awesome Yankee memorabilia item on ebay.

I’d tell people what it was but I don’t want anybody else to buy it!

  28. Billy

This fight is going to be a killer for sure, Pacman is an animal and deserves all the respect from the entire boxing community. It would make it that much more spectacular if it was held at Yankee Stadium. Boom.

  29. Wait till the ALDS

This from poster Lawrence A. Herman on RAB (not me):

“Yankee Factoid of the Day: The Yankees have 28 games left and their magic number is 22. Over their last 28 games, the Yankees have gone 23-5. In other words, the way they are playing now, they would win the division even if the Red Sox ran the table.”

floyd mayweather is the most exciting person in the sport.

  32. yankfanmanila

i’m hoping Manny fights in yankee staduim! Pacquio is the best pound for pound fighter! I’m hoping to see him squares off against mayweather in Yankee staduim!!!
