Bad break for Rays: Pena done for year
Carlos Pena fractured the middle and index fingers on his left hand when he was hit with that pitch in the first inning. He was placed on the 60-day disabled list after the game.
Carlos is one of the nicest guys in the game, it’s too bad. So many things went right for the Rays last season and so much has gone awry this year. This injury could finally cook them.

Sorry for Pena, but I think they were already cooked. It says here that from Boston or Texas will come your AL wild card. Big limb to climb onto, I know.
The Hit Batsman Police Christina25 should be here to tell us soon that the Yankee pitchers are the anti-Christ, blah blah blah.
You never want to see that happen. Tough luck for a great player.
Pete,
With all due respect, the Rays were done even without this Pena injury.

What Jeter has done this year (his whole career, really) is amazing. Last year, he was still quite good, but, not really the same. I would think that the legs were missing. This year, he’s more like the 25 year old Jeter.
I think that Damon might be having those same issues. His homers are up, but, I think that’s more a case of him cheating on his swings, and homers and strikeouts are up. A long rest over the winter should revitalize him. You see it in the lack of steals.
Rodriguez just has all of the pitchers confused with his approach. 3 hits, 3 different fields. They don’t seem to know what to do with him.
I agree it stinks for Pena, but the Rays seemed to throw in the towel when they traded Kazmir. You don’t normally trade a pitcher when you are having some problems with pitching (namely the bullpen).
Ouch on breaking his fingers, double ouch being that he had to swing again.
All good, there season’s over anyway
Game 2; Jeter 6, Damon 7, Teixeira 3, Matsui DH, Swisher 9, Cano 4, Cabrera 8, Hairston 5, Molina 2, Burnett 1. –Carig
Enjoying watching KC defeat the vaunted Angels.
If NYY wins the 2nd game, they have a chance to get to 90 wins before Boston reaches 80. That has to put Boston fans into shock.
Jeter was doing fine up till he got hit on the hand by Cabrera last year. After that HBP his average nose dived, and didn’t recover till the last month – month and a half.

Carlos Pena really is one of the nicest guys in the game. That’s a shame.
That guy had to do it the hard way to make it and you hate seeing that happen.
Injuries can derail any team at any time. For small market teams though, injuries and/or poor performance really sets them back because they don’t have the money to fix their problems in season.
When you are in the AL East, there are only so many patchwork moves you can make.
Astros are making life miserable for Philadelphia. Losing 4-3 in the bottom of the 8th.
It started with giving away Edwin Jackson and they were done with giving away Scott Kazmir.. Even with Pena healthy, they had no chance.
“It started with giving away Edwin Jackson and they were done with giving away Scott Kazmir.. Even with Pena healthy, they had no chance.”
That was a terrible trade by the Rays.
thats too bad for pena..
What has hurt Tampa more than anything is the disappearance of BJ Upton. He may have punched his ticket out of Tampa. Not just the poor performance, but, the poor attitude. It’s a tough call to trade a lot of talent for that guy and hope that he grows up.
That’s a shame
Great win Garza always pitches the yankee tough. This is like the games against Pedro. Sabathia matches Garza and then when Garza is out of the game the yanks get the runs off the bullpen.

I only want to know if Brad sold his soul last year. He’s blown a ton of saves this year.
BJ Upton as a ton of talent, but with his somewhat bad attitude, he would benefit greatly being on a team like the Yankees with older and respected superstar players.
I always thought Upton was overrated. The real star there is Carl Crawford.
BJ Upton is just about the most lazy baseball player i have ever seen…i don’t see him play everyday…but i see what i see.
Jeter 4 for 4 tonight?
Magic number is now…….

If that’s the case, he sold it to the right city. Philadelphia is an historic city with everything but a soul.
Does Girardi use Hughes again as the closer during the second game if there is a save situation? He probably wont use Mariano again.

I think Upton has had attitude issues since he first came up.
They seem to be worse this year though.
His body language shows the attitude.
His bat and speed was a big key to their offense last year.
Almost the opposite this year.
No Hughes or Mo in Game 2 according to Girardi.
No need to push anybody. Fortunately, Girardi understands that fact.

————————————————————
The only reason that Upton is over rated is because he’s underperforming and unmotivated. He has as much talent as anybody in baseball. Something is missing.
KC beat the Angels.
You play to win every game, period.
If Hughes or MO are needed in game 2, they should pitch. All these games this month are important. If we lose, Boston gains a game in the loss column tonight. Don’t want that to happen.
Upton and Maddon don’t get along at all.
He also has never gotten his bat speed back after his surgery for a torn labrum in the off-season.
Its been a lost year for him.
That’s too bad, hate to see the injuries.
The Rays had the year I expected after last year. Too many career years for guys like Navarro. No injuries to their pitching staff. Overachieving bullpen.
Their most ridiculous offseason move was trading Jackson for the Tigers OF who didn’t play hardly at all all season. I think Jackson was coming up for a contract etc, but it was the exact opposite of the trade that netted them Garza for Young. The Tigers trade was a horrendous move and Pat the Bat being a dud another. Pat the Bat or Bobby Abreu? Yikes. And I realize they wanted some righty power, but there are ways around it. They have had a rotation of poor players in RF much of the year. Abreu, Upton and Crawford in the OF is pretty darn good.
Should have moved Kazmir in the offseason if that was the intention.
That’s a shame about Pena. It’s been great to see him live up to his potential these last few years after so many teams gave up on him.
The Rays caught all the breaks last year. However, their bullpen is terrible, they only had two dependable starters (Sheilds and Garza) and B.J. Upton just killed them when he was in the leadoff spot this year.
Upton, offensively, has just been dreadful this year.
Bronx Jeers, I am now rooting for you as my own prediction has been sunk. Let me tell you a little story that involves staring into the abyss known as Anaheim, California.
Way back in the year 1992, I was very briefly living in Orange County, just a youngster with little knowledge of the crual twists and turns that the world can bring.
A buddy and I decided we wanted to see George Brett get his 3,000th hit and he was 4 short as the Royals came to town (or were they already in town?). We figured we would go two nights but Brett took care of business with 4 consecutive hits that very night to join the 3,000 hit club and save us a return visit.
Can Derek Jeter get 4 hits tonight and give you a similar but better memory?
Only time will tell.
The Yankees owe the Rays for last year. If the Rays and Sox had not kept the Yankees from the playoffs CC, AJ and Tex may not have been signed.
Upton is coming off an injury, and I don’t think he is back to himself. Cannot speak about his attitude, just sayin he is still healing.
Sorry for any season ending,or career ending injuries.
KC-5 LAA-3 Yankees p/u a game in the home field race,too.
Come on Tex TONIGHT.
Looks like I missed a terrific game. Gotta watch the archived game.
-Missed another exciting Gardner moment?
-Too bad about Pena. Though he irritates the Yankees to no end, it sucks all around and I’m sure CC feels bad even though there was no intent.
-Christina won’t complain too loudly, after all Pena does play for a contending team.
-Looks like Oudin won? I hope the run continues.
-What happened to that Red Hot Sox offense? Does it take days off when it hits the road? Or is that just coincidence?
-Finally, looks like we used up both closers, huh? Hopefully we’ll have a closing situation and we won’t see any hyperventilating pitchers.
tampa’s goose was cooked when they failed to gain ground against the red sox last series. They simply dont have a good bullpen, which they proved again.

When you see young players with that much talent and just pizz it away, you’d like to take a bat to the side of their head and hope it works. Then you see a guy like Gardner or even Shelley Duncan that have less than half that talent trying to gut out a career or Eric Duncan who, no matter how hard he tries, just can’t stay healthy. Or, you look at yourself and say. “Why can’t I have that talent? I’d at least make good use of it.” He reminds me of Gary Templeton.
Waiting outside gate6. Total cluster, nobody getting in yet crowd growing. At least its all Yankee fans

Didn’t Upton come up when he was 18?

I think a guy like Madden can be fine when you win but his hard nose approach might rub some like Upton the wrong way when things aren’t going well.
Not blaming Madden, just saying Upton’s okay when they’re winning.
Can Kimberly Jones stopping asking and answering her own most blatantly obvious questions? I have nothing against her, but they should never allow her to conduct an interview again, her questions are just brutally awful.
Have her go around the stadium and talk to fans or make observations, which she seems to be good at. But her interview questions reek of trying to sound smart and witty (and they are rhetorical and boring).
Penny “turned it around” by returning to the National League. It’s alot easy pitching there than the American League (and esp. in the A.L. East).
does anyone have an opinion on what has a better view. section 236 left field bleachers or 203 right field bleachers.

You can only hope that his brother doesn’t follow the same path. He might be one of the few players with BJ’s talents.
No, you don’t play every game to win, period.
You play the schedule and think long term.
The Yankees are comfortably ahead in both the division and best overall record.
There is no logical reason to burn out players.
Mo is coming off a sore groin. Only a fool would extend him in the second game of a meaningless DH.
Its not football and every game isn’t “must win”.
How dumb would it be to extend a player in the second game today and lose him for the post-season.
Girardi has already said neither Mo nor Hughes will pitch today.
They will just have to try and find a way to win a “must win game” another way.
murphydog, there was some confusion about your status update. Are you recently married or have you been married for a good number of years?

Almost every pitcher and big batter seem to do better in the NL. Holliday was nothing particularly special in Oakland, he moves back to the NL and is tearing it up.
Not knocking Pujols, as he is a very, very good player, but I wonder if he would put up as good numbers against the steady barrage of AL pitching.
If Penny can go from being mediocre against the AL and being above average in NL, and Smoltz also doing the same, it becomes telling that the level between the leagues is not the same.

18 or 19., not sure. His brother, Justin was 18.
The kiss of death was when Maddon made them all dress up like Johnny Cash, may he rest in peace.
My mistake, Maine, they were both 19.
What makes people think they’re not trying to win every game?
Just because they put in a backup catcher? Or give Swisher a break in RF?
Jeez.
The thing I love the most about the Sawx loss today,is Beckett denied again #15 FOR THE 4TH TIME.
He’s nothing w/o his juicers support in the line up.
Left field better view imo

Agreed, but with Smoltz, they give the reason that he was tipping his pitches and Daddy Duncan fixed it..

We had a guy from this area that was drafted by the RS. Not sure if he would have made the majors, but he was extremely talented. If he got on first it was almost a sure thing he’d be on third within a few pitches.
I don’t think he even made it out of rookie ball.
To put it kindly his intelligence didn’t match his talent.

I would have killed for that talent. I was blessed with everything but ability. (and money. I was blessed with a few wives if you know anybody that needs one or two)
Carl Crawford is the real face of the Rays but the ever economical Rays will likely listen to offers for him with Fernando Perez and Desmond Jennings emerging as real prospects and under cost control for several years.
They’ve somewhat conditioned their fans with the deal of Scott Kazmir to the Angels.
Brad Penny is auditioning for FA.The Sawx devalued him by letting him go.He’s looking for a pig payday in the off season.SF is just a stepping stone for him to get his mojo back.
thats so sad. Feel bad for Pena and Rays fans. They;’ll trade all the good players away or let them walk in FA and be just like that other Florida team, the Marlins.
Rays were done anyway
Funny thing is even with the horrible Jackson-Joyce trade and Burrell sign plus regression from Upton,Kazmir and Navarro they got all star seasons from Zobrist and Bartlett.
Upton will be a problem untill someone gets him to bust it EVERY DAY.Rays should tie him to a chair and make him watch a looped video of Jeter.
