The magic number is …

Derek Jeter did not make himself available to the media after the game, which is very unusual for him. He is hitless in 12 at-bats for the first time this season. David Price became the first pitcher to strike Jeter out three times in a game since Curt Schilling in on April 19, 2004 at Fenway Park.

Like it mattered, right? The Yankees won 3-2 on a walk-off homer by Nick Swisher. It was the third time Swisher has homered from both sides of the plate this season. He now has 26 homers (five at the Stadium) and 77 RBI.

“I guess I was due,” Swisher said. “The guys were kind of giving me a hard time about it, saying I had my one for this month.”

A few other notes: Johnny Damon reached 100 runs for the 10th time in his career. … Dave Robertson will go see Dr. Andrews on Thursday at his office in Pensacola, Fla. … Chad Gaudin has allowed four earned runs in 14 innings as a starter since joining the Yankees. The team is 3-0 in games he has started. … Yankees have won 22 of 26 at home.

This hit record is a distraction for Jeter.

  2. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Montero Fanaticus Primus September 8th, 2009 at 10:57 pm

The Yankees have played .750 baseball since the All Star break (they were .671 in 2007).

    .750 baseball.

Let me say that again so it sinks in: .750 baseball.

If that doesn’t sink in, maybe this will: the last year a Yankee team got to 90 wins this fast?

    1998.

  3. Mac Daddy September 8th, 2009 at 10:57 pm

why no show for the media?

  4. Betsy September 8th, 2009 at 10:58 pm

Maybe something is happening in his personal life…….I really don’t think he’s pressing. It’s just a slump – he’s had them before and he’ll have them again

  5. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Montero Fanaticus Primus September 8th, 2009 at 10:59 pm

A 121 win season over the course of a whole season would be a .746 pct. Just for comparison value.

  6. J-Dawg--Veintisiete en... let's try '09! September 8th, 2009 at 11:00 pm

Jeter couldn’t care less about the mini slump AS LONG as the team continues to win. He’ll bounce back with a vengeance.

Maybe he’s feeling under the weather and didn’t want the media to catch what he has. Truly a class act. :)

  7. Jim Pir-one September 8th, 2009 at 11:01 pm

The Angels commentators are talking about some guy named “Vladdy”

Does anybody know who that is?

I know of a lumbering Frankenstein, but not any Vladdy :)

I thought Beltre was out for the year with that man region injury he got earlier this year.

  8. L to the 2nd September 8th, 2009 at 11:01 pm

Jeter went thru an 0 for 34 slump a few years back.

    He’ll get through this.

Just trying to get it out of the way as quickly as possible.

  9. stanzy September 8th, 2009 at 11:01 pm

Jeter is fine. He’s hit a few balls hard, over the past few games. He’s just been a little unlucky.

Just got home from the game and I was so sad for Jeter, and myself really. I wanted to see a record broken. But he’ll get them one of these days. I’m pulling for friday because I might be there.

Then why didn’t Tampa hit one? Apparently, they’re cheap.

I know it’s shocking but Jeter is human. It’s funny hearing everyone make excuses about how he’s not pressing.

  19. Rob L. September 8th, 2009 at 11:13 pm

Jeters entire family is in town. He’s allowed to blow off the media for a night to be with his family, isn’t he?

  20. Erica - always OPPC September 8th, 2009 at 11:14 pm

    I am home.

And I have officially declared myself “Nick Swisher’s good luck charm”. LOL

I was sitting down stairs, just foul of the right field found pole. Swisher and I had a moment. I know it.

No worried, MPB is still Johnny Damon. But at least Swisher is unmarried so I cannot be declared a homewrecker again

  21. J-Dawg--Veintisiete en... let's try '09! September 8th, 2009 at 11:14 pm

    Rishi,

It’s a war of attrition and unfortunately Monfils just doesn’t have enough left in the tank to hang in. The last two sets will probably be runaways.

  22. john_halfz September 8th, 2009 at 11:16 pm

It’s not really that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things. Jeter scorched two balls last night. If you think he’s “pressing” now, it’s a little silly.

Anyway, I’m waiting for SG’s reminder about Swisher’s not being suited for everyday duty. He has that OPS+ almost to 130 now.

  23. Rishi September 8th, 2009 at 11:17 pm

well – with that, I’m going to call it a night…

  26. '98 Revisited September 8th, 2009 at 11:21 pm

These are the types of games we haven’t been winning the past few years. In the past we would have gotten dicouraged after giving up a lead in the late innings. But this group of guys never give up.

  27. '98 Revisited September 8th, 2009 at 11:23 pm

40 games over .500 for the first time since the last game of the 2004 season.

  29. Jerkface September 8th, 2009 at 11:23 pm

Dave Robertson will go see Dr. Andrews on Thursday at his office in Pensacola, Fla. …

Like most people, Girardi was too busy being fixated on Mariano’s groin. If he had asked D-Rob how his groin was daily, eventually it would have lead to the conversation that would get D-Rob talking about his tight elbow.

Girardi is a damn hack/disgrace/nightmare. You have 25 groins on a team, not just one; I’m sorry, but that’s basic Tee-Ball coaching stuff, Managing 101. You’re making millions of dollars per year Joe, is it too much to ask you to check all of them out daily? And I don’t care that rosters have expanded, show up to the ballpark early and check jocks. Lead by example.

  30. 100 pitches of fun... September 8th, 2009 at 11:24 pm

Good job by Jeter. He probably realized that nothing good is coming out of talking about it. It is obviously just making things worse hearing about it all day and then having to answer the questions. What is he supposed to tell the media why he didn’t get a hit?

    I forgot to mention-

I saw our very own Pete on the field pregame interviewing someone. I wasn’t sitting very far and I considered calling out, but I had spilled soda down my white shirt and had made it wet-shirt night at Yankee Stadium. I didn’t think that would make the best impression.

But Pete looked very spiffy in his almost light green shirt!

I was half selfishly hoping he wouldn’t get it tonight, as I got stuck with the D-Rays coverage and I didn’t want my memories of this to be tainted by their waspish coverage, lol. The only reason I was hoping Jeter would get the hits was so you could see it, lol. A walk-off is almost as exciting though.

LOL how covered was Swisher with cool whip? He looked like the marshmallow man from Ghostbusters.

Comment: “I hope Jeter never talks to the media again.”

That’s a brilliant comment. Jeter has crafted his image of being a cheerful, responsible, accountable team leader by the comments he has made to the media over the years via interviews. It has led to his becoming the face of his franchise and earning millions in endorsements. But Pel writes that he hopes Jeter stops talking to the media.

Of course, because that has worked out so well for Manny, or A-Rod or other guys who lack public relations skills. They really have benefitted from that.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but Jeter has a friendly relationship with every beat writer. He’s a nice guy who enjoys talking about college football or television shows and movies. He asks about your family, we ask about his, etc. Everybody’s a professional about it because both sides realize that the fans benefit by hearing what the player has to say about the game.

As a supposed fan of the team, why would you want Jeter to change that? It makes no sense.

I asked Jeter to do our reader Q&A and he was happy to do it and had fun with it. 500+ people wrote in, it was a nice interaction. But Pel would have such things vanish.

Great idea. By all means, let’s have the players never say a word. The game would be much better that way.

When Swisher hit his walk off home run, I was jumping up and down so much, I actually jumped into the seat in front of me and hurt my leg.

And my Yankee soup bowl is actually kind of cool, but I would still rather have Yankee Snoopy

Ok to break the awkward silence, Erica, go to Toronto and stand in section 130A. Johnny is great with the fans out there, and would probably hear you chanting his name as all of 5 people go to Jays games. Then again, if you switch to RF, Swisher would hear you and you wouldnt be labeled a homewrecker…

Erica: is that a trick question?

  91. AnjaK-J September 9th, 2009 at 12:01 am

I don’t think Jeter dodging the media at the moment is necessarily a bad thing. Some avoidance of the circus surrounding this record might get him back to hitting and getting it over with.

I’m not saying the record isn’t important but the way it’s being handled by some outlets is getting a little ridiculous.

  92. m September 9th, 2009 at 12:02 am

Yeah, but no one does the cliche better than Jeter. Just look at some of the, um, media people bat their eyelashes at him.

And Erica, you’re going to have to try harder than that to get the attention of the players.

  93. Stevie September 9th, 2009 at 12:03 am

HAve you ever asked Arod to do a blog Q&A and if so, what was the response?

(good to have any way in case I need to leave the country in a hurry)

Wouldn’t I be a hypocritical homewrecker if I ended my pretend relationship with Johnny for Swisher??? I prefer to stay Swisher’s good luck charm

Sorry to get upset, but I try and take pride in what I do for a living. I’m a fan of teams and players myself and I enjoy reading about those teams and players. When somebody suggests that athletes shouldn’t talk, you’re basically saying I shouldn’t have a job.

I don’t know. When Swisher was in the field at the Top of the 9th, some dude behind me was hounding him and yelled “Look at me”. He actually looked and we all went nuts

I thought it was a deserved smackdown, especially given we all benefit from the fact that Jeter does talk to the media. This blog is living proof that people want to hear from the players – cliches or not.

He had a helmet on. I really had no idea who. It definitely wasn’t Shelly. This guy seemed short and young

  110. rb September 9th, 2009 at 12:12 am

True, Angel. But I think the fact that he left without making himself available is a bigger deal to the media than it is to the fans. I mean really, what more can he say at this point?

  111. MT. September 9th, 2009 at 12:13 am

Thanks for that, Pete. I love what you do every day…I’d love to do it myself!

I hope the guys with the notepads and recorders will give the guy a pass tonight – he’s there for you just about every day and he’s one of the good guys.

“Drama builds as Jeter’s skid continues
Once an innocent drought, hitless streak turning into a slump”
    http://mlb.mlb.com/news/articl.....8;c_id=mlb

Hmmmm, maybe this is why Jeter wanted a night off from the press. Guys like Pete are looking to inform their readers who are fans. Some others might just be looking for “Breaking News”. It’s got to get tiring for the players sometimes.

  113. Ed H. September 9th, 2009 at 12:14 am

    Pete,

You’re right, of course. I don’t think anyone really wishes any athlete would stop talking to the press, because that’s how we get to know them. With Jeter, I think many wish to get beyond the vanilla persona that comes across in his interviews because he’s probably an interesting person when relaxed in conversation. In talking with him informally, you must get more of his personality, which we don’t see. (Jealous?? You bet!)

Poor Madison Bumgarner is a true SF Giant now; the bullpen just flushed his first win down the toilet and gave him a No Decision. :(

  116. '98 Revisited September 9th, 2009 at 12:14 am

I think I am actually rooting for the Sox to get the wild card. The Sox crush the Angels in the playoffs. And frankly, the Angels scare the crap out of me.

  117. m September 9th, 2009 at 12:16 am

more than anything, I think Jeter hates that a big deal is being made out of this.

Very surprised, and even if there’s not a good excuse he deserves a pass.

It’s not like he had an error that cost the game or something else he needed to be accountable for.

Honestly, with how hyped up its getting I can’t say I blame him, rb. But yeah, he’s always available and he’s not tonight, I can see mentioning it. He probably just wants it all over and done with. The team is still winning despite it, so its not distracting the team, which I hope makes it a little easier for him. Its inevitable. It’s going to happen. He’s not going to retire before those 4 hits happen, lol.

  124. DanWatowski September 9th, 2009 at 12:27 am

    Pete,

You’re more than justified in being upset, but this line
“Of course, because that has worked out so well for Manny, or A-Rod or other guys who lack public relations skills. They really have benefitted from that. ”
    made me stop.

Hasn’t that actually worked for A-Rod? I mean, everything I’ve read in the last month or so has been basically how his shutting up has done wonders for his game, and how he’s viewed by the media and the players in the clubhouse.

  125. Giuseppe Franco September 9th, 2009 at 12:31 am

Jeter stood there after two games yesterday and answered the same dumb questions he was going to hear once again tonight. It’s not a big deal.

I’m sure he preferred to let guys like Gaudin and Swisher get their props instead of answering the same questions again.

  126. Giuseppe Franco September 9th, 2009 at 12:32 am

A-Rod HAS indeed benefited this season from not talking to the media much.

The more he talks, the more he gets in trouble and the media jumps on him for it.

  127. Stateman52 September 9th, 2009 at 4:35 pm

Jeter will speak when he breaks Lou Gehrig’s record. When you ask Swisher the time, he tells you how to make a clock.
