Back in a bit with reaction from Jeter. The Yankees are 40-13 since the break. Unreal.

    Or Ron Swoboda?

14 is always and forever Pinella.

40-13 since the break and folks still whine and second guess Girardi. Hysterical.

  7. Abdababdaserser September 9th, 2009 at 10:26 pm

This team just never seems like it is out of a game even when they are trailing. It is almost shocking when they lose.

Memorable night for us Yankee fans.

4 game sweep of the Rays is still pretty impressive.

No let up from this team. I loved the counter moves by Girardi to all of Maddon’s moves. Sharpening his skills for the post season? Let’s hope so.

Enjoy the #14 for another 5 outs in Boston.

  10. CB September 9th, 2009 at 10:26 pm

This is an amazing team. In many ways it’s better than we can see right now.

There’s a distance in time needed to appreciate some things.

I think this team has a chance to be a team that you appreciate more and more as time goes on because the class of teams its moving towards is so rarefied.

There’s still a lot of season to play and of course everything depends on the post season.

But not having won the World Series in nearly a decade and watching Boston win twice has made many Yankee fans more fearful than they should be. It’s made too many people feel that success with this team is more fragile than it really is.

This yankee team is reaching a level of excellence that is staggering.

“40-13 since the break and folks still whine and second guess Girardi. Hysterical.”

Well yeah. If Girardi were smarter the Yankees wouldn’t have lost any games since the break.

    Stupid Girardi :-x

    This is odd…

I was in ym bathroom and I saw one of those random “Inspected by #” stickers loose on the floor. Do you know what number it was?? #27 :-)

    Inspected by #27, I hosted 27 rounds of GTLU…

    Magic Numbers:

    #17 (Hairston) = Home Field; #14 (Hinske) = Division;

    #2 and #4 … well you know;

    #91 (Aceves) = number of wins;

  17. J-Dawg--Veintisiete en... let's try '09! September 9th, 2009 at 10:33 pm

Miguel Cairo was another great Number 14. :)

It’s just been such a great ride for the Yankees since the All-Star break. The team has been on top of its game.

Speaking of on top of someone’s game, Federer is drilling Soderling, unsurprisingly.

  18. Betsy September 9th, 2009 at 10:34 pm

I missed it because I was sort of watching Obama’s speech, but is John Flaherty correct – the Rays were cheering for Jeter?

  19. mick September 9th, 2009 at 10:35 pm

    betsy

everybody loves jeter even the redsox.

  20. J-Dawg--Veintisiete en... let's try '09! September 9th, 2009 at 10:37 pm

Jeter was indeed getting the cheers from the Rays, the ultimate sign of respect.

That really speaks volumes as to how much Jeter is appreciated by everyone in the game.

  21. Jim Pir-one September 9th, 2009 at 10:37 pm

    CB -

Great post. I am unfortunately one of those that fears the Red Sox, perhaps a bit too much. As time goes on, I see how special this team is.

    MG -

Absolutely. I agree about that at bat. He was not going to change his approach to at bats for that specific one.

I misinterpreted your comment. I thought you meant that Teix would never change his approach to an AB. My bad.

  22. Blackaccord September 9th, 2009 at 10:38 pm

nice landmark date (9-9-09) to tie Lou Gehrig’s record.. will easily be remembered by most of the fans…

    ———–

Outstanding point, CB. I’ve said the very same thing over the past month but you just said it much more eloquently than I did.

This is a special team. It’s been obvious for awhile now.

It’s why I don’t fear any potential opponent out there regardless if it’s the Tigers, Red Sox, Rangers, or Angels.

This team can beat anyone. Period. Too many fans have that pre-2004 Red Sox mentality with this team and I simply don’t understand it.

  24. Betsy September 9th, 2009 at 10:40 pm

J-Dawg, thanks! I agree…….I still remember the Yankees standing on the dugout steps when Cal broke Lou Gehrig’s game played streak – it’s nice when teams can put aside their rivalries for a moment to show appreciation for an historic event.

Congrats to Jeter and thanks for waiting to break it while I’ve got YES and not these disgraceful Rays guys.

Poor Soderling. Obviously, he was going to lose, but he looks like a child out there.

Erica, My girl makes me watch these shows on CW, eversince like 2 yrs. ago. :)

BTW she’s a big Silver/Dixon fan. S.2 for 90210 feels like a freakin’ movie. Way better than all of last season, drama off the you know what soon to come. Melrose was good too, that show less than 10 munutes in starts w/ drama.

  31. Kevin September 9th, 2009 at 10:46 pm

Personally, I do not think 40-13 is unreal. The Yankees have a loaded line-up. If everyone performs to their typical season averages, and throw in a couple of over-achievers and this is what you get.

They’ve had this potential for several years, but it seemed many performed below their season averages.

Now most of them are performing at or above. When you put an all-star or potential all-star on the field in almost every position each night, you expect to win a lot of games.

Hey all. Rough week in terms of outside activities so I’ve been catching games on the radio with glimpses of television.

I read posts from the bottom up (where I hook in, and then upward) so sometimes I see something quoted but then
have to keep going to see who made the original statement. I saw a quote about Joba not making progress and immediately said “SJ!”

When I listened to last night’s game and heard what a great outing Gaudin had, I immediately thought about SJ, who was ready to have Gaudin never pick up a ball again after his last outing.

I think Joba did beautifully (from what I was able to hear) to recover the way he did after the first inning. FWIW, both Sterling and Waldman are convinced that the pitch count has really messed with him. That’s just an aside. So he had a rough first inning and then retired what, 8 in a row? That surely is progress in my book.

You know the saying “Good waiters get good tips”? It’s true.

    ;)

“Who would you think has a higher WHIP? Yuse or Papelbone?”

    m,

It is, of course, Phil. Those numbers also include his starts in which he was good, but not as dominant as now. The amazing thing, is that if you look at just his bullpen numbers, they are better than not just papelbon by a long way, but better than Mariano in just about all categories. Except saves, also he is not doing the higher pressure closing, which could have an effect over a full season.

Tampa won their second game of the FSL playoff on Brandon Laird’s 2 run homer in the top of the 9th inning. He’s 5-8 with a double, homer and 7 RBI in the two games.

Staten Island lost 3-2 in 11 innings. Scranton won 3-0. Big gun was Curtis with 2 RBI and 1 hits. Jackson was 1-4.

  71. Wait till the ALDS September 9th, 2009 at 11:20 pm

Hold on-Hasn’t Mo pitched much more bullpen innings?

  72. Phil September 9th, 2009 at 11:23 pm

Jeter had an amazing night. Not only did he go 3-4 with a double and a walk to tie Gehrig, but he yelled at Justin Chamberlain who was immediately transformed back into Joba. And not only did Joba become great again, but after Jeter’s visit to the mound, no other Yankee pitcher gave up so much as a single.

This is a truly great Yankee team.

I see Pete’s poll – who would you rather see the Yanks play in the first round – Detroit or Texas?

There is a 3rd possibility – LA Angels!

Texas is only 4 games out in the AL West.
Texas plays the Angels 7 times.
Angels have to play Boston and NY (no easy task) – 7 more times.

  77. pfisher518 September 9th, 2009 at 11:26 pm

Kind of lost in everything that happened were the outstanding outings for Ace and Albie. Without them pitching 5 no-hit innings there is no win because we aren’t in the game.

  78. Brandon Awesome "BECAUSE I'M AWESOME!" September 9th, 2009 at 11:27 pm

GB if the AAA playoffs have begun, the IL division is in trouble, Colin Curtis and Austin Jackson turn it on during playoffs. Curtis last championship series in AA he hit .414 and should have won the MVP but Austin was just ridiculous defensively in that series and had a clutch HR. :)

If the Angels do not finish well enough to win the division it is extremely unlikely they would beat out Boston for the WC.

We’ll see the Angels in the ALCS or not at all.

Pel, you’re all over the place!! Amazing coverage :)

    Thanks!

  85. Jim the VT Yankeefan September 9th, 2009 at 11:46 pm

15 more hits for the captain and he moves into the top 50 for MLB all-time.

Griffey is the only active player with more hits than Jeter. He has 2751.

The answer is (drumroll, please)…. Papelbon.

Even with his WHIP as a starter (1.50), Hughes’ WHIP on the season is down to 1.13 thanks to his fantastic WHIP as a reliever (0.82) even though that’s higher than Rivera’s (0.77) which makes Papelbon’s WHIP (1.22) look embarassingly bloated.

Thoughts from Jeter’s peers around the league:

    I am off to bed.

    Good night Yankee people!

  89. Pat M. September 9th, 2009 at 11:51 pm

Yanks will have to take out the Angels ( 6 games ) on their way to the Championship # 27…..The Halos will beat Boston in the ALDS….Anaheim will display a track meet vs. Boston that modern baseball has never seen before….Between the BoSox starters inability to hold runners and Veratek’s poor % of throwing out runners will send Boston packing for the season….National league is harder to read….The Divison leaders all are fighting for home field, and the Wild Card is up for grabs…..Nobody wants the Giants in round 1

does shelley smash get a start tomorrow?

  92. Giuseppe Franco September 9th, 2009 at 11:59 pm

I predict nobody starts tomorrow. They have a day off.

  93. Nick in SF September 9th, 2009 at 11:59 pm

If they tell Shelley he’s starting tomorrow, that would be a mean trick.

  94. you gotta have faith (huuuuuuuughes) September 10th, 2009 at 12:03 am

lol woops, college has me all dazed and confused.

  95. C September 10th, 2009 at 12:04 am

    Federer match is geting interesting

  96. Jim the VT Yankeefan September 10th, 2009 at 12:06 am

Anyone remember that series in Chicago when the Yanks looked pretty bad? They lost the first three out of four. The last game they lost was an ugly 14-4 affair.

Well since then they have gone 39-8. That’s an .830 winning percentage.

    Just…wow.

  97. Blackaccord September 10th, 2009 at 12:11 am

    roger prevails and moves on….

  98. Patrick September 10th, 2009 at 12:13 am

I just got back from the game. I feel so lucky that I got to see Jeter tie the record live! I just wish he had gotten that 4th hit but at least I got to see him tie Gehrig. What a great game, the crowd was awesome.

This team is unstoppable. I can’t wait until the postseason, it should be fun.

  99. Backbench September 10th, 2009 at 12:17 am

    Trisha, thanks for tracking this.

And thanks to Erica as well for the Guess the line up idea. These are the great little things that allow us to feel like we are part of what is turning out to be a magical season.

What is really amazing is that a 105 win guess now looks like a low number.

    Just Wow!

  100. David Astoria September 10th, 2009 at 12:17 am

I think Luis Sojo wore it once….

  101. MT. September 10th, 2009 at 12:18 am

Oh Patrick – what a memory. Very cool.

  102. Backbench September 10th, 2009 at 12:18 am

“I predict nobody starts tomorrow. They have a day off.”

With the way they are playing, somehow they will still get a “W.”

  103. Tom September 10th, 2009 at 12:20 am

FYI, Pete, and this should also get to Flarety and Kay. Upton was playing with a sprained ankle. That’s why he was taken out and that’s probably why he was slow getting to those balls. Give the guy a break, he tries to be a gamer and everyone accuses him of dogging it.

Otherwise thanks for the great report.

  104. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Montero Fanaticus Primus September 10th, 2009 at 12:21 am

Jim: That is an astounding stat.

  105. Nick in SF September 10th, 2009 at 12:21 am

Congrats, Patrick. Nothing beats being there.

ESPN recap of tonight’s events with Stuart Scott and some bald dude:

Stuart Scott showing Jeter massive respect.

  107. CK in LA September 10th, 2009 at 12:25 am

    Andy Phillips also wore #14

  108. Patrick September 10th, 2009 at 12:25 am

It was weird, usually when the team is losing for the majority of the game the crowd is out of it and I feel like crap. Tonight was different. Partly because after the first inning the pitching was outstanding and partly because of the Jeter hit chase but mostly because whenever we watch this team we feel like they are going to win no matter what.

Two run deficit against the best Tampa has to offer? Who cares? Everyone in the stadium knew the Yankees were going to come back. The confidence is back, I love it.

  109. Nick in SF September 10th, 2009 at 12:26 am

Pel working double-overtime after the Muzzle Rumble!

  110. CK in LA September 10th, 2009 at 12:27 am

Had to laugh when the massive booing started after Jeter’s walk

  111. Jim the VT Yankeefan September 10th, 2009 at 12:27 am

On the day the Yankees’ front office gathered to talk about its top pick of the 1992 draft, Jeter’s name came up, and one of those present said, “Jeter? Isn’t he going to Michigan?” There was a moment of silence. Then Dick Groch, the scout who signed Jeter, said, “No. He’s going to Cooperstown.”

didn’t enrique wilson & wilson betemit wear 14? I might be wrong… go yanks.. I had a blast at the game today!!!

  113. CK in LA September 10th, 2009 at 12:31 am

Guess we should be really glad that the Astros & Orioles passed …. best decision they ever made for us!

  114. Tim N. September 10th, 2009 at 7:07 am

I’m not much for stats, but this one actually stopped me cold:

15 times they’ve been tied in the eighth inning.
    15-0 in those games.

    Think about that!

  115. Hideki "Fat Toad" Irabu September 10th, 2009 at 8:45 am

Hey, what about me ? I wore No. 14.
