UPDATE, 3:43 p.m.: It’s raining, but the color guard is rehearsing on the field.
UPDATE, 4:15 p.m.: Gates are open.
UPDATE, 4:31 p.m.: “I haven’t been told we’re not playing,” Joe Girardi just said.
UPDATE, 4:36 p.m.: Damon out because, “his back locked up.”
UPDATE, 6:05 p.m.: Still trying to play.
UPDATE, 6:23 p.m.: We’re not going to start on time here in the Bronx. It’s raining, the tarp is down, it’s windy.
UPDATE, 6:29 p.m.: Just talked to Johnny Drama Damon. He hopes to play tomorrow. Said his lower back and hamstring tightened up on him.
UPDATE, 7:05 p.m.: There are streams of rain blowing across the Stadium like it’s the monsoon season in Rangoon. We’re not starting at 7:05 p.m. or anytime soon.
UPDATE, 7:31 p.m.: They just announced they were going to try to come to a decision in 15 minutes, The rain does appear to be letting up.
UPDATE, 8:28 p.m.: Yankees taking the field, Meanwhile bands of rain are blowing across the field toward the plate. It’s not going to be a pleasant night.
UPDATE, 8:32 p.m.: We are underway. Delay was 1:27.
UPDATE, 8:39 p.m.: It’s really raining now. Game delayed briefly to work on the mound. Crowd is in the frenzy as Jeter gets ready to hit. Lose Yourself on the PA. Good choice.
UPDATE, 8:43 p.m.: Jeter falls behind 1-2 and strikes out swinging at a curveball.
UPDATE, 8:49 p.m.: Alex destroyed that pitch. Yankees 3-0. He has 25 homers and 83 RBI.
UPDATE, 9:12 p.m.: Yankees 3-1 and Jeter could get up this inning if somebody gets on.
UPDATE, 9:14 p.m.: Nope, we have to wait another inning to see Jeter.
UPDATE, 9:20 p.m.: Jeter to the plate again shortly. Wonder if anybody will go to the concession stands?
UPDATE, 9:23 p.m.: Perfect, an inside-out swing and grounder the other way into right field. The typical Jeter hit … and his teammates come out to greet him.
The crowd cheered so loudly that Jeter had to wave his helmet several time, as though he was trying to quiet them. His parents and girlfriend seemed very pleased. Nice moment for them and everybody here.
UPDATE, 10:02 p.m.: Another hit for Derek, No. 2,723.
UPDATE, 11:21 p.m.: Sorry for the lack of recent updates. Lots of Jeter-related newspaper work to get to. Plus late games platy havoc with deadlines.
The crowd has vanished in the wake of the Jeter milestone. Can’t say I blame them.
UPDATE, 11:36 p.m.: Rain delay. It is pouring. Yankees down 10-4. I can’t imagine too many people will stay for the end of this game.
Meanwhile, when do you figure the Yankees get it over with and release Edwar? He is what he is at this point and that’s not a good pitcher.
UPDATE, 12:02 a.m.: The rain has stopped and the tarp is coming off. There appear to be no more than 500 people here. The clubhouse opens to the media for the second game of the series in nine hours and 28 minutes, You can image how thrilled I am.
UPDATE, 12:22 a.m.: Re-start time, 12:40 a.m.
The 1:45 a.m. Jeter press conference after a loss should be a real hoot.
UPDATE, 12:38 a.m.: Girardi is taking most of the regulars out and sending them home.
We’re going to interview them now, which is weird as the game isn’t over.

If the Yankees are skipping Mitre Saturday, it would seem logical that they have decided to replace him as the fifth starter with Gaudin.

I really hope they get this game in! Covering the game at the part-time job tonight and would love to see another installment to Yankees history. If it’s postponed I’ll miss it :-/
I know the Yankees are loathe to cancel games (greed, etc.) and nobody wants double headers this late in the season, but I’m looking out my glass door, and I’m pretty sure tonight is an absolute no-go. There’s so much water running down the gutter that I could probably go surfing.

Hey guys check out this stupid article from NESN. I guess when the Yankees are the hottest team in baseball and the Red sox are second rate there writers have to tear the Yankees down. This article could apply to the Red Sox as well because Lester at this point is the only pitcher who is reliable on their staff.

Also, and I apologize for forgetting who said it, but in a previous thread, a poster suggested that the Yankees wouldn’t want to see Jeter break the record on a wet, damp miserable night with thousands of no-shows for the game because of the weather. That made some sense to me.
How many days has it rained during the season and how many times have the games been postponed? The Yankees will find a way to get the game in tonight.
Question for the audience on a raindy day re: HOF eligible players upcoming. Below are those eligible for next few years.
There are many players on this list who are considered “locks”. Arod was once considered a lock, and now is no longer as his name was leaked from “The List”. What happens if some of the clear choices on the lists below are leaked prior to the 2010 voting period? Would it really surprise any of us to know any of the below are on that list?
Might we see a period of time where no present players make the HOF, or might instead leniency be given to those like Arod, and all make it in?
Just a good debate to have, especially after seeing the names below.

will the Yankees play the same opponent regardless of which series (long or short) they choose? It would be nice if the best record in baseball granted you the ability to pick your opponent AND the long or short series. At least that would enhance the “advantage” of being the #1 team.

Had 3 appts. in the city today and going from one to the other was ugly. Alternating downpour with drizzle but the wind was what really made it bad. The jetstream tonight could be blowing in 12 different directions at the stadium if they get it in.

Since rain is the mood of the day- I will tell the greatest umbrella story ever.
Sometime in the 1970′s, my grandmother’s best friend’s uncle died. In his will he remembered my father, which was really ransom because they had only met a few times. He left my father a very old umbrella.
One day it was raining very hard and my father took the umbrella to work in the city. He came out of the subway and opened the umbrella. A giant gust of wind then blew and broke the umbrella in about 30 pieces. LOL
My dad felt terrible. But I always find that story hilarious

Joe somehow got us to 41 games over .500 with a .750 winning percentage for the past 3 months. I think he knows what he is doing…
Flagstaff, then why rest the players now? Why isn’t Joe pushing them to go all out and win as many games as possible before the end of the season? That’s meant to be a rhetorical question – going all out would be completely stupid when the end game is not the division. My point is, if you are going to rest players to keep them as healthy as possible for the post-season, why play them in monsoon conditions?

Thats why I think the Yankees have a great chance of finally making it to the ALCS based on those stats. A.J. Burnett should pitch Game 2 based on his home record and his numbers after Yankees losses and games after he struggles. Burnett : 4-1 with a 3.39 ERA at home, 6-6, 4.78 away. Andy Pettitte. He’s 4-4, 4.83 at home, 6-2, 3.58 on the road.
With that rotation in a short series the Yankees should be fine.

Actually, the Yankees are tied with the Angels and Rays, giving up the 5th most HRs in baseball right now. Only Baltimore has given up more in the AL, and the Reds Brewers, and Phillies in MLB.

when A-rod was going for 500, they had a game that had been suspended mid-way, so the date the game was played is listed as it was when the game started, even though the end was a few months later. that won’t be the case if the entire game is postponed.
Why would the Yankees offer nady arb? He’s going to be out until probably august 2010. Gonna pay him 8-10 mill to sit on the bench? That would be worse than the pavano situation considering we didn’t know pavano would be hurt

I got a phone call today from a client of mine (I’m an insurance broker, mostly health) who is a great guy, about 61, telling me he had stage 4 pancreatic cancer and thanking me for all the good things I had done for he and his family in the past couple of years. He has 5 kids, a loving wife, and many grandchildren and said he regrets nothing and is at least happy over the ability to live these last precious months amongst his family. Phone calls like that put sports in perspective for me, particularly on 9/11…
I would say Derek Jeter also leads the all-time Yankees “I hit that” list as well.

I watched Sesame Street since birth. When I was 3 I declared I wanted to marry Ernie. However, I also taught myself how to read at 3. Which was discovered accidentally by my mother one day when she was screaming at me about my messy room and I started reading a book out loud to tune her out.
I watched tv as much as my parents would allow me to my whole life. I come from a long line of TV watchers. Days of Our Lives during dinner was a nightly occurance in my family.
I grew up fine. And I am a CPA now. So I do not believe TV has made me stupid in anyway.

Got my own umbrella story, scary but it turned out ok.
While I was stationed in Turkey, my ex-wife and I took a trip to Egypt in 1977. We took our umbrellas with us for shade.
We had a great week and had a lot of fun in Luxor and Cairo.
As we were leaving at the airport the men and women were required then to stand in separate lines to go through a checkpoint. There were a lot of guards around. After about 15 min there was all of a sudden a great commotion over at the ladies line. There were loud voices and what looked like someone chasing another person. Then it became clear that it was my wife chasing one of the guards and repeatedly hitting over the head with her umbrella!!! Holly shit I remember saying to myself. But the other guards were just standing there laughing. My wife turned around and got back in line. A supervisor came and yelled at the guard Mary had hit with here umbrella.
After we got through the checkpoint I asked her what the hell had happened. She said he had walked by her and copped a feel of her ass. The second time he did it she got really mad just starting hitting him with the umbrella. We kept that umbrella on a wall tell we moved to England.
So are we playing tonight or should I actually be productive around the house for once??

This is how much I like my Law & Order. Flipping through the channels, I stop on NBC b/c I see Vincent D’onofrio doing his crazy, psycho undercover thing. Only, next thing I see is Lisa Kudrow and I’m thinking, “that’s not right”. And next thing I see is Hank Azaria. And some woman barking like a dog.
I couldn’t turn it off, had to see if the lady would stop acting like a dog. Worse. Movie. Ever. Avoid “Bark” at all costs.

wow, I just moved heaven and earth to get home on time, cut short a much needed workout, threw myself in the path of speeding vehicles, pissed off like 10 bus drivers and untold numbers of yuppies, paid for an excessively expensive cab (Jeter would have done the same for me, right?)……

So my plan was to go to this game tonight.
I wasn’t home when Jeter was retired in his 8th inning at bat.
I went on Stubhub and was amazed at the reasonable prices of tickets. By the time I called a few friends and drove home the game was over and the number of tickets available had gone down fron 2300 to 600 and the prices had soared through the roof.
I was beyond pissed… upset at myself for not booking the tickets right away and dealing with the other crap later.
So now I sit here poring over weather reports and weighing the pros and cons of buying tickets for tomorrow’s game. But even that game is in question. Maybe Sunday’s tickets are the way to go.
I gotta roll the dice here in some way. If I wait until tonight’s game is cancelled I’m going to pay through the nose. But there’s an outside shot they play tonight.
I have plans tomorrow but would break them to see Jeter pass Gehrig. But other than that I really don’t want to go to the game. I guess my best bet would be bite the bullet and buy tix for tomorrow AND Sunday and hope it keeps pouring tonight.

Hard to say on the Rockies. Need to see how they fare on this 9 game roadtrip. 23 games for Boston and Texas. I think Texas needs to pick up at least 3 games in the next 6. Their last 17 include 7 with the Angels, 3 with the Rays and 11 of their last 14 are on the road. Randy I ( The Original Tin Cup )…I had lunch today & Coors with Richie Amaral and his buddy from the 1983 Weeze Kids who is scouting the Dodgers & The Angels for the remainder of the season…..We talked about the teams that will be playing next month…..As for the Yankees, the areas of concern are few however the are essential….Clearly the most pressing concern will be if the Bombers can overcome the loss of Wang in the ALCS & The Series…..They were able to disguise the problem during the course of the season, however in a best of 7 it’s a whole different game….The other issue will be whether or not they can get the ball to Hughes & Rivera…If they can, they will be very hard to beat…..As for Robinson Cano and his RISP….No # 7 -8 hitter in baseball gets up with runners on base as does Cano….Then again he’s the best # 7-8 hitter on the planet….He see’s Cano as a major player come October……Basically guys, Joba could be a major factor come next month……Angels have a leathal front 4 rotation, the bullpen will be their undoing…But they should get by Boston as they have home field, and Boston has issues away from Fenway……

I don’t know, of the two I guess Texas would have a better chance. Don’t know if they have any HTH games with the Angels, but they’re only 5 back of the Angels in the loss column. Unless the Red Sox play the rest of their games at Fenway, I think Texas has a chance.
Another question for the masses. Hypothetically speaking and assuming the Yankees make the ALCS, who would you rather face? The Angels (west coast arch-nemesis) or the Red Sox (they’re the Red Sox).
If you watch the prices a lot you can get deals for certain games, especially at the last minute.

Texas is really no better on the road than Boston and play tougher teams, so I think unless they have a 2-3 game lead with 15 to go, they are screwed.
As for the Angels or Red Sox, I don’t know. Probably prefer to see the Yankees not have to engage in coast to coast travel. And the Angels are a little better than Boston is, so that makes them less preferable as well.

Got my own umbrella story, scary but it turned out ok.
While I was stationed in Turkey, my ex-wife and I took a trip to Egypt in 1977. We took our umbrellas with us for shade. We had a great week and had a lot of fun in Luxor and Cairo.
As we were leaving at the Cairo airport the men and women were required then to stand in separate lines to go through a checkpoint. There were a lot of guards around. After about 15 min there was all of a sudden a great commotion over at the ladies line. There were loud voices and what looked like someone chasing another person.
Then it became clear that it was my wife chasing one of the guards and repeatedly hitting over the head with her umbrella!!! Holly shit I remember saying to myself. But the other guards were just standing there laughing. My wife turned around and got back in line. A supervisor came and talked to my wide then yelled at the guard Mary had hit with her umbrella.
After we got through the checkpoint I asked her what the hell had happened. She said he had walked by her and copped a feel of her ass. The second time he did it she got really mad just starting hitting him with the umbrella.
We kept that umbrella on a wall tell we moved to England.

I have an umbrella story that was scary but turned out ok.

They were the best team in baseball last year, won 100 games, had great years from all their pitchers, had Shields-KRod in their pen, Teixeria in their lineup… and they still lost in 4 to a reeling Boston team. Beckett was awful, Lowell was on one leg, Ortiz did nothing. Yet they handled the Angels.

I was stationed at a base called RAF Upper Heyford about 20 miles north of Oxford. We lived in an old Vicarage that was built in 1600′s. It was in the Cotswolds area of England with all the stone walls. We loved it there and hated to leave when I was reassigned back to the states.

Their collective ERAs is a much more telling stat.
For instance, the Yanks knocked around the Angels’ starters pretty well for the most part this season.

I had been hoping to make the contribution for this specific event, with the thought that it would “targeted” to stomach cancer research. I make regular contributions to American Cancer Society and other organizations for breast cancer research (my mother is a survivor). Yes, I absolutely understand. As I mentioned, my mom is a breast cancer survivor. My dad passed away from complications originating from his diabetes. Those are the two closest to my heart. Some diseases are just overlooked until they are put front and center thanks to “celebrity”. We never hear about stomach cancer.

All cancer sucks. Took my nanna and both my in-laws – my mother-in-law 15 years ago this week and my father-in-law in May this year.
Survival rates have improved for a lot of them, but one day there will be a cure. I hope I live to see that day soon.

McAllister and De La Rosa could be middle of the rotation starters in NY within 2 years. Ryan Pope could get to the end of the rotation, Horne is doubtful other than a bullpenner. Pendleton is going to fool a lot of people, but, most likely a long man. Bleich needs a lot of work, and need need to back of and let him develop, instead of rushing him. He should still be in Tampa. These are only my observations, combined with what others are writing.
Way to go Jeter….you make me so proud to be a Yankee Fan…so glad when I was 8 years old in 1980 WPIX carried the Yankee Games and I just started watching and loving the Yankees!!!!…btw back in that day we only had like 6 channels

If the colors of the flag are red, white and blue, they should have had 3 hats – one red, one white and one blue (navy). Newhouser was most likely very proud when Jeter won the Rookie Of The Year. I’m sure he would be even more proud of Jeter after this, had he lived. Both are Michigan kids. Newhouser died in November of 1998. Newhouser had a definate eye for talent. Two more of his finds were two top of the line pitchers, Milt Pappas from Detroit and Dean Chance from Ohio.

GB, Cano has become an All-Star calabier 2nd baseman…..Bowa would be very proud how he’s developed into such a outstanding player…..Had lunch today with the Phillies advance scout today, and he raved about Cano….He says he needs to become more disiplined at the plate and he’ll add 15-20 points to his BA, espicially with runners on as the book is for pitchers to nibble on the first pitch ….Thats a fine stragergy, however Cano has great plate coverage

A couple notes from tonight.
Although we have 10 straight wins versus Balt., I’m sure they made an effort in every game, even in Andy’s near perfecto. Great effort from Baltimore tonight. Would love to see that effort against the Red Sox.
Aside from the fair call at home plate by Kerwin, it looks as if he has his Orioles shoes on tonight. Loads of pivotal cheap calls in this one from the Danley man.
And most Yankees Lohudders wonder why I have something against Bostonians. Because of inhuman comments like the one above. There are very few bostonians that are actually human beings. It’s like they are their own species.
Marte since coming over has been used for full innings lefties/righties.. He’s proven many times that he should be a matchup lefty. I know Girardi doesn’t like to pigeon hole pitchers but how many times do we gotta watch this happen?

Yeah, PAT, what I’ve noticed this year is that he hasn’t resorted to take his hitting issues into the field and vice-versa. That has always been something that he couldn’t seperate. As far as being impatient, he’s much like Clemente and Guerrero. They felt that if they could reach the ball, they could hit it hard. For the most part, they’ve all been correct. The same theory of “You can’t walk off of the island.”
It’s a miracle guys ! Edwar is getting hitters out.
I think I overuse the eyeroll, but only because I didnt know the other ones and it only occurred to me to ask tonight.

The only forfeit I recall is when the Yanks played the final game of the year against the Washington Senators before they moved to Texas. Yanks were losing in the 9th – the fans stormed the field – Yanks won by forfeit.
Well at least they got the game in tonight. Even if it is a loss. Texas and Boston both have to play double headers this weekend. That is not fun, especially when they both have to win every day.

Mr. Franco, give it up as you’ll never make headway with those with baseball IQ’s that are on par with a jellybean…..What did you think about the Phillies scout had to say about the Yanks needing to make up for the loss of Wang this October…..The other issue he pointed out was the need to be able to get the ball to Hughes and Rivera….His assessment for the clubs success this postseason could rest on those to concerns……

I’m in complete agreement with the scout regarding the need to replace Wang’s spot in the rotation. I don’t think Lackey is the answer to that, but they do need somebody who can take the ball every five days and eat innings.
With two inexperienced youngsters like Joba and Hughes both in the rotation (and Hughes on an innings limit) they need someone else to carry the load.
Not to mention you have to assume the offense will take a step back with Matsui likely gone and age catching up to some of the older players. So they are going to need to compensate for that.
And yes, I agree they need to get the ball to Hughes and Mo in October. Of course, that’s kind of the formula on most nights.
It all starts with starting pitching. The starters need to do their jobs and keep this team in the game or they are not going to last very long. I’m very confident if the starters do their job, the relievers will step up and do theirs.
The Angels’ pen is not very good. The Red Sox pen is still good but they can be had. The Tigers’ pen is far from intimidating.
Personally, I don’t think there’s any question the Yanks have the best one-two punch in the game right now.
Starting pitching will still be the biggest factor in determining the Yanks’ fate.
This is like watching that 19-10 game in Fenway last year in the rain after we were eliminated with all the scrubs in the game on both sides.

The only reason Marte was in the game is because the Yankees had to go to the bullpen after only five innings because Pettitte couldn’t do his job.
The Orioles have had a tag hanging on their toes for more than a MONTH and Pettitte goes out there and stinks it up.

The same thing happened last year… All through July and into August, all you heard on every “Daily-News 5th,” from multiple writers, was how good Andy Pettitte feels.
Then he crapped out at the end of the season and invented some non-specific “shoulder weakness” load of crap.
TWO MRI’s found NOTHING… But the Andy-loving media ran with the excuses, even though it contradicted everything they had been saying.
The issue with Pettitte now is NEVER going to be how well or poorly he does in the first half… It’s going to be: does he have ANYTHING left at the end of the season?

I’ve also said for awhile that Wang’s injury hurt this team considerably more than people realize.
I personally think a big reason why the Yanks took a starter (Aceves) and moved him permanently to the pen.
Aceves has made up for their shortcomings in the fourth and fifth slot in the rotation.
So it’s not ideal to lose Wang for a big postseason series. But they’ve compensated a bit by keeping a quality multiple inning guy like Aceves in the pen.

Gardner was fine today. The guy slipped off third base it was wet that happens, Cano would of never scored if Gardner didn’t get him to 2nd.
