Kim Girardi, whose husband manages the Yankees, is hosting a special event at the Stadium on Saturday.

To support stomach cancer awareness, Kim and Kid Styles of Bedford Hills will be running two booths selling blue hair extensions. One extension is $12, you can get two for $20 or three for $30. There will also be raffle tickets to win signed items from the manager.

All proceeds will go to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center at Northwestern University. The event will run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and is presented by Joe Girardi’s Catch25 Foundation.

Blue hair extensions? Very odd way to raise money…

To Anyone Going to the Game on Saturday-
(Sort of a report, Pete and I were on the same page apparently)

My mother died of stomach cancer in 2002 at the age of 47. She was in a lot of pain for a year before the doctors were able to find the source of it. I always wonder if they were able to detect it earlier if my mother would be alive today. She died within a year of being dignosed.

Even if blue hair extensions aren’t really your thing, I would greatly appreciate anyone who stopped by to make a donation to this very important cause.

(Thanks Pete for giving this cause a mention. I really appreciate it)

    Erica,

Please accept my deepest sympathy on your mom’s crossing.

Your sweetness and wit really come out in your posts. Are you like your mom in this respect?

    Bodhi-

Yes, I definitely have my mom’s personality- but my dad’s interests. I am an interesting mix of my parents. My mother was not a baseball lover. In 1998, she famously asked “Who is Mark McGuire and what’s the big deal” LOL.

But she was very kind and caring. And would do anything for anyone.

Thank you so much for your kind words

Erica, I’m so sorry about your mom……..and I can to all here that you are as sweet in person as you are on the board.

    Erica,

I’m giving you an internet hug.

And I swear to you, her life continues, she is still completely herself, and she will never, ever leave you.

    Erica -

I am so sorry to hear you lost your mom at too young an age (not that there’s ever a good time, or ever enough time). From your spirit that comes through in these posts, she did a great job (with your dad) of raising a lovely woman.

Thanks Doreen, Bodhi and Betsy :-)

I appreciate your words and thoughts.

The really strange part is, this event is being held tomorrow. Tomorrow would have been my mom’s 55th birthday. I can’t think of any better way to honor her than making donations to this cause

Erica, i’m sorry to hear about ur mom.. Life is cruel at times.. my dad has been diagnosed with bile duct cancer and its not operable.. We don’t know how long he’s gonna be there and as u said, may be if there had been an early diagnosis, we might not be in this situation… Like Erica said, even if the blue hair extensions is not your thing, do your best to donate.. cut down on a beer or something.. These donations go a long way in helping people suffering with cancer as well as cancer research which might help ourselves one day..

I will be at the game tomorrow and I plan on purchasing 1 or 2 hair extensions. I’ve known many people who had cancer although not stomach cancer. My great Aunt Lil just passed away from cancer (I think it was bone or skin) this morning.

    Erica,
First, I am so sorry you lost your Mom, please accept my sympathy.
Second, PLEASE go to our educational website to see if your mother might have had a genetically caused stomach cancer which (1) is nearly impossible to diagnose early and difficult to pinpoint even after it occurs (2)typically affects younger adults (my husband died of it at age 58 on 2/8/09) and (3) is preventable/curable if determined by genetic screening. Our site is http://www.BeStrongHearted.org. Thanks for the post, Pete….I hope she raises a ton of money. Memorial Sloan Kettering has a top-notch team of doctors committed to patients with this disease or genetic risks: HDGC, Hereditary Diffuse Gastric Cancer.
