I sayin’ he gets 3000 before the 2011 asb.

  4. Mike in Harrisburg September 11th, 2009 at 3:01 pm

Steve Sparks is my favorite tough luck pitcher of all time because while playing for the Angels, following a team meeting with a motivational speaker, he separated his shoulder trying to tear a phonebook in half. You can’t beat that.

7,000 in 2049 vs 82 year old Tim Wakefeild. Old Knuckleballers never die!!!

  6. mick September 11th, 2009 at 3:02 pm

all this talk of jeter being overrated is hogwash. if anything he is underrated.

  7. Uncle Ellsworth (#2 needs 1 to pass #4) September 11th, 2009 at 3:04 pm

this talk about Jeter breaking into “top 5″ is stupid.
    just stupid.

  8. mick September 11th, 2009 at 3:06 pm

of course if you are chasing a record set by the great Lou Gehrig, you will suffer by comparison. ripken had the same fate. neither are overrated, both underrated. 1st ballot HOFers.

  9. Nick in SF in Santa Rosa September 11th, 2009 at 3:06 pm

Uncle Ellsworth, if tonight’s game is washed out, does everyone’s Jeter pick default to the next played game? Are you the only one who picked tonight’s game? Was this whole thing fixed from the get-go?

  10. mick September 11th, 2009 at 3:07 pm

jeter could surpass yogi in the 5 spot.

From other thread: any increase in Trenton’s offense will be greatly (and I do mean greatly) appreciated. :)

I had to think twice when I saw the Josh Pettitte reference. Andy’s son? ‘twould be fitting. (Especially if Mo’s son comes in in relief!) :)

I hope tonight’s game is rained out.

With my new work schedule after being promoted I work 3pm to 11pm Weds-Friday.

It would also make for a fantastic day of sports tomorrow with the Yankees, college football and especially USC @ Ohio State.

I think i’m the only one who is close.
    Fixed? no.
    I used geometric logic.

seriously I picked him to break the record tonight in his first at bat Wayy back on August 20th.

If he does it – I’m patting myself on the back.

btw I was one inning off the tie hit

What Pete, you think it’ll take Jeter almost a full 5 months to get 44 hits? So what if he’d be 46 years old ??!!? He’d still be Derek Jeter.

Yes, it would, Doreen. Had Vazquez anf Montero not been hurt, their offense would have carried Trenton into the playoffs. They were left with very little after that. It sould be another sparkling year for Scranton, Tampa and Charleston, next year, though. Charleston should be monsterous and Tampa will be ancored by a 19 year old left handed fire baller. Somebody needs to adopt that kid and feed him 5 times a day (Manny Banuelos). very nice, well mannered kid, but, very quiet.

  45. Seven September 11th, 2009 at 3:26 pm

Jeter is not a top 5 all time yankee he wont even be a top 10 all time yankee. There are two guys on his current team that will be ranked higher than Jeter. Mariano Rivera should be ranked higher than Jeter.

And by the end of there careers, Alex Rodriguez will be ranked higher than Jeter as an all-time yankee. Once A-Rod has a big postseason and wins a ring which will happen. He will then jump right over Jeter.

  53. AlbanyYankee September 11th, 2009 at 3:30 pm

If it takes DJ until August of 2011 to get #3,000, something has gone wrong. He projects to finish this year with 2,747 hits. He averages 208 hits every 162 games. So, you have to figure he’ll be around 2,950 very early in 2011 barring injury. Hopefully, 3,000 comes sooner. But, given that he’ll be turning 37 in 2011, anything is possible, I suppose.

  64. murphydog September 11th, 2009 at 3:34 pm

Simon and Garfunkel again from Sounds of Silence, circa 1966

    Kathy’s Song

I hear the drizzle of the rain
    Like a memory it falls
    Soft and warm continuing
Tapping on my roof and walls

And from the shelter of my mind
Through the window of my eyes
I gaze beyond the rain-drenched streets
To England where my heart lies

    My mind’s distracted and diffused
My thoughts are many miles away
They lie with you when you’re asleep
And kiss you when you start your day

And as a song I was writing is left undone
I don’t know why I spend my time
    Writing songs I can’t believe
With words that tear and strain to rhyme

And so you see I have come to doubt
All that I once held as true
    I stand alone without beliefs
The only truth I know is you

And as I watch the drops of rain
Weave their weary paths and die
I know that I am like the rain
There but for the grace of you go I

Love is like a dyin’ ember
    Only memories remain
    Through the ages I’ll remember
Blue eyes cryin’ in the rain

Some day when we meet up yonder
We’ll stroll hand in hand again
In a land that knows no partin’

    Thanks GB7-

Johnny Rivers has some great music. I have a bunch of his songs on my iPod

    ————————————————————

I’ve got about forty of his songs, many obscure ones, loaded among the 28,000 songs loaded on my computer.

    GB7-

Yeah, I think I have 4 Johnny Rivers songs. LOL. But thats probably 4 more than any other 28 year old you have ever “met”. LOL

I only have about 1400 songs on my iPod. I have trouble thinking of ones to download

    Baby, I Need Your Lovin’

When I’m dreaming I can sing, in the shower, in the car, man, I sing like the Four Tops:

“Baby, I need your lovin’… got to have all your lovin’…”

In the twilight glow I see
Blue eyes cryin’ in the rain
When we kissed goodbye and parted
I knew we’d never meet again

Love is like a dyin’ ember
    Only memories remain
    Through the ages I’ll remember
Blue eyes cryin’ in the rain

Some day when we meet up yonder
We’ll stroll hand in hand again
In a land that knows no partin’
Blue eyes cryin’ in the rain

Now my hair has turned to silver
All my life I’ve loved in vain
I can see her star in heaven
Blue eyes crying in the rain

    ————————————————————

Willie has the best version of that, but, Gene Vincent has a great version also.

“Somewhere Over The Rainbow” Judy Garland

  97. murphydog September 11th, 2009 at 3:51 pm

“Oh, who did you meet, my blue-eyed son?
Who did you meet, my darling young one?
I met a young girl, she gave me a rainbow,
I met one man who was wounded in love,
I met another man who was wounded with hatred,
    And it’s a hard, it’s a hard, it’s a hard, it’s a hard,
    It’s a hard rain’s a-gonna fall.”

Some of Bob’s songs make the hair on the back of my neck stand up. This is one of them. But I’m old…

  100. murphydog September 11th, 2009 at 3:56 pm

“Somewhere Over The Rainbow” Judy Garland

always makes me think of Never Never Land, (Green and Comden). Todd Rundgren even does a version of it…

Hey, why not “(The Sun Will Come Out) Tomorrow”?

  101. GreenBeret7 September 11th, 2009 at 3:57 pm

A complete Johnny Rivers collection must include “The Ballad Of Hopalong Cassidy”.

Cool, I appreciate that. Johnny’s version of “Baby, I Need Your Lovin” is the ONLY version to me.

    Mick-

Yes, I have. I also really like Memphis

From Led Zeppelin’s The Rain Song:

These are the seasons of emotion
And like the winds they rise and fall
This is the wonder of devotion-
I see the torch we all must hold.
This is the mystery of the quotient-
Upon us all a little rain
    Must fall.
    Just a little rain?
    Ooooh, yeah yeah yeah

“Rockin’ Pneumonia and the Boogie Woogie Flu” Johnny Rivers
(Who happens to be from here in Baton Rouge, LA. There is an urban legend here that he once got caught smoking in the boys room at Baton Rouge High School and he blew smoke in the principal’s face)

gb7 – do you think that a trenton rotation of mcallister, pope, delarosa, bleich and horne/stephens/pendleton/? will show substantial improvement?

nyy in btr – i’ve been playing bass for 44 years and still won’t leave my cave LOL!

  113. ed September 11th, 2009 at 11:35 pm

Jeter, the classiest gentleman in baseball, is no Lou Gehrig, and the fact that he, himself, would tell you this proves the point.

  114. Dutch Hugo September 12th, 2009 at 12:47 am

ed – Jeter and Gehrig are apples and oranges. they are completely different types of players playing in very different eras.
Jeter’s actually bigger (listed at 6-3, 195, while Gehrig’s listed at 6-0, 200). Gehrig a slugging first baseman, Jeter a model of consistency shortstop with a great inside-out swing and occasional power.
Jeter may be no Gehrig (doesn’t have his power) but Gehrig also was no Jeter (a gold-glove shortstop. And he’d probably be the first to admit that, as well.
Can’t we just celebrate both of them without trying to constantly quantify who’s “better”?
They were/are two great, great Yankees.
