Andy Pettitte, Jorge Posada and Mariano Rivera took a lot of pride in seeing Derek Jeter tie Lou Gehrig atop the franchise’s career hits list.

Hey Pete, did anyone for A-Rods opinion about Jete passing Lou?

  2. jenna

Hey Pete, great article, from what I could read of it. For the past week or so, I have been unable to read the second page of your articles either by clicking on page 2, the arrow, or trying to type it in.

  3. Betsy

Even though Andy spent some time in Houston, it still seems like he’s been here his whole career, like he never left (I guess he did, though – #65 is proof positive that he did, lol)

They did all grow up together – looking back, I can’t believe it’s been 13 years. They were all just crazy kids back in 1996; who had ANY inkling that their careers would turn out the way they have?

  4. Damon

Taking nothing away from any of the Yankee greats, which are numerous. It’s always an honor to witness greatness when it happens.

  5. Cash is King

Here is another great article about Jeter and the other three amigos that came up through the Yankee system together.

The weather for tonight is not looking promising, which sucks. I’m leaving at 1 p.m. to head to the city for the game (3.5 hr drive). I’m bringing my 6-yo son to what I hope will be his first Yankees game.

  7. Pov

I see we have a makeup game with LA on Monday. J. Weaver vrs Gaudin. From my perspective I thought we might have been able to setup our pitching a bit better for this game.

  8. Coach6423

Monday matters very little in the grand scheme of things. They are up 5 in the loss column, and I believe 7 games on the Angels for home field advantage. Monday means basically nothing.

  9. Pov

Coach your points on the standings are right on. I disagree in the grand scheme of things the Yanks need to prove that they can beat LAA.

  10. Guy Incognito

    In re: the weather.

It doesn’t look promising for tonight with the storm staying put off the Jersey coast until early tomorrow morning before it starts to move out, but the Yankees are pretty determined and apparently the field drains well. The weather’s been worse this season and they still managed to get games in.

That said, the Yankees are a great team but cannot (yet) control the weather. Both weekend games are day games so presumably a rained-out game tonight could be made up as a night game, likely tomorrow so as not to run into TV restrictions with the football games. Just my two centavos.

  11. The Ghost

Betsy, Pettitte didn’t really leave, he was basically dumped in favor of Kevin Brown

  12. dispatcher307

    Guy;

You are right on all points. The odds are if the makeup game is at night – we’d miss the Jeter record, which would suck. Ugghh. Well we are going to head down and see what happens. That’s all we can do.

  13. Coach6423

They have beaten LA. They beat them 2 out of 3 at home just this year. If they lose Monday, it means NOTHING in October.

Glad it sort of worked for you. I spared you the lecture that came along with the tip when my mother-in-law gave it to me.

    Clare

Afraid of being frozen out by him maybe. I know my next response to that answer would have been, “Do you think I’m that stupid or are you that stupid?” – that’s snarky.

    Thanx Sweet 27

    We shall never forget.

  17. William Buckner

    dispatcher307,

I’m in the same boat. We’re leaving at 2. But as posted above, I’m guardedly confident that although the weather will be ugly, baseball will be played!!!

  18. Rishi

“Tonight the Pride of the Yankees are their quartet of Iron Men.”

love this line from the article posted above…

  19. vey

If Gaudin delivers his economical pitch count innings, with command like he did his last outing,Yankees will be ok.

I don’t think Joe expects more than 5 innings from him, anything more is a bonus.

  20. JoeyA

    Pete-

I second jenna’s comment above. For about a week or two now, the links to the second half of the articles haven’t been working. I can only read the first page of every article.

Today is a day of remembrance. Never forget…

  21. vey

I just hope that Joba,(who by the way was caught by Molina and still had problems)is shut down.

The fact that the Yankees are always behind in runs, and racing to get back in the game here lately with him on the mound,is frustrating.

It would be a good morale boost if the Yankees won the .Weaver is a pitcher the Yankees will face in the playoffs.

Have you considered bringing a change of clothes to leave in the car in case of a rain out and a make up game tomorrow? That way, you can maybe find a hotel somewhere and just stay over night instead of going home. I would hate for your son to miss out on his first Yankee game

  23. Sweet 27

For the playoffs I would move Joba to the pen, and start Gaudin.

  24. Stateman52

Gaudin and Mitre combined could pitch one game in the playoffs.

  25. Bob

Hoping Gaudin and Mitre can be consistent, especially Gaudin who pitched great the other night. God Bless America !

  26. Andrew GTLU Bronze Medalist

Little premature to be bowing down to Gaudin and giving him a post season starting role. He has had moments where he’s pitched well, but other moments where he can’t get out of the 4th or 5th inning. Much like the guy he is supposed to replace. I will take my chances with the young inconsistent guy who still has potential to put 4 pitches together on a given night and dominate (even though he has not done it in quite some time), as opposed to a fringe starter who throws 2 pitches and if he can’t locate one (his slider), is toast.

That said, no way either Gaudin, Joba or anyone besides CC, Andy and AJ start a game in the ALDS. Too much of a risk, and I honestly don’t think the Yankees can pick the B series in fear of having to face Verlander & Jackson twice in a series.

  27. Christina

Sad day thats for sure. We lost 40 people from our department that were in tower 2. Less we never forget….

  28. jennifer

    Christina

    I’m so sorry. :-(

  29. 86w183

Yanks don’t need to fear anyone. I’ll take their top three against anyone else’s. The real mystery is the # 4 starter assignment so you might as well avoid that when you can.

Based on the last two-three weeks only Mitre and Gaudin have authored “quality starts”. Joba has not had one since the Tampa Bay game on July 29th. Since then in seven starts he’s gone 29 innings and allowed 27 ER — a tidy 8.38 ERA.

  30. Rishi

“Derek Jeter has done the impossible. He has made it hard to hate the Yankees.

For 15 years, he has thrived in a city that devours the weak. He quietly has embarrassed all the buffoons who deemed him overrated and a Gotham city embellishment. And now the white knight of baseball is striding into the classic New York moment, ready to rescue the sport from one of its duller closing months on record.”

    86w183-

In partial defense of Joba, its impossible to have a quality start when you are yanked after 3 innings. Most of his starts under the revised “Joba Rules” would not have qualified anyway, but his last one could have whereas Joba only allowed 2 runs and settled down completely after his rocky first inning

The scout that discovered Jeter,Dick Groch, remembers…
    http://www.newyorkblips.dailyr.....for-groch/

I can’t find the story ,still looking.

Groch was told not to bother trying to sign Derek Jeter, because he was going to the University of Michigan,(where he had a full scholarship offer) he said.”no he’s not, he’s going to the hall of fame.”

  33. Vader

This date in history should never be forgotten and to anyone who may have lost someone or know someone that may have been affected eight years ago today…I feel for you and will never forget how I felt that day, as well as how I feel today.

  36. haiku-man

For some reason the link doesn’t work, the web site listed is correct. http://www.newyorkblips.dailyradar.com Dick Groch remembers Jeter.

  37. 86w183

Actually all three of his starts under the new Joba rules have been the same. Three innings, two earned runs. The other four starts in this grouping were before the “rules” changed and were even worse — 20 IP, 21 ER.

  38. JeterJobaCanoFanForever, enough said

Joba retired the last batters he faced and had batters swinging at wrong pitches. Wish he would have pitched a 4th inning.

I know it doesn’t solve the problem, but you could try hitting the ‘Print this page’ link that is near the top of each article. In my experience, when the Print dialogue box is dismissed, the printer friendly page stays open and contains the complete article, there for your reading. =)
