Yankees to remember Sept. 11 attacks

This from the Yankees:

The New York Yankees announced they will hold a special pregame ceremony on Friday, September 11, prior to the Yankees’ 7:05 p.m. game vs. the Orioles.

During the home plate ceremony, the Yankees will give special recognition to the USS New York and the ship’s crew as well as the commissioning committee during a home plate ceremony. The state-of-the-art stealth ship, whose bow stem includes seven-and-a-half tons of steel recovered from the fallen World Trade Center, is scheduled to be commissioned into the U.S. Navy’s fleet on November 7.

The presentation of colors will be made by the USS New York Naval Color Guard, the FDNY Color Guard, the NYPD Color Guard and the Port Authority Color Guard. Naval musician Laura Carey will sing the national anthem.

Representing Washington, D.C. – an area also affected by the 9/11 tragedy – will be Janet Napolitano, Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, who will throw out the game’s ceremonial first pitch.

Scheduled to arrive into the New York Harbor on November 2, the USS New York will proceed up the Hudson River, where she will pause and dip her ensign (the American Flag) as she passes the World Trade Center site, then proceed up to the George Washington Bridge, turn and dock at her Manhattan pier. On November 7, she will enter naval service.

My condolences to those who have lost loved ones, either thru cancer, 9/11, or other diseases. My Dad died at 76, which was still too young, as a consequence of years of smoking.

I had minor knee surgery yesterday, so have spent today on the couch watching the Steinbrenner Yankeeography and the pre game ceremony from the last game at the old YS.

It is beautiful upstate, wish I could send the nice weather down to YS.

I agree Erica. I can’t exactly remember Bronson Arroyo’s comments but I think they summed up Steinbrenner as being the only manager who cared more about winning than making money.

Why in the world would the Yankees “cancel” this game and lose out on the gate when they have 2 days to play a doubleheader?

MLB won’t let them cancel it if there is a doubleheader opportunity, nor would the Yankees want to lose out on $$.

    Andy has 173 innings
    He gets 750,000 for reaching 180, 190, 200, 210 ip.
Looks like 190 is the target now.

I can’t believe it’s been 8 years – I work on Long Island and we could see the smoke coming from the towers. To this day, I just won’t ever watch a special on 9/11 – it’s too painful.

    Good job by the Yankees.

Don’t underestimate the O’s. They may suck compared to the AL East but they are not THAT bad. Especially with a young pitcher on the mound…Yankees tend to rack up a bunch of zeros with younger pitchers with only a little bit of tape to watch. Their offense is pretty decent and their starting pitching while young, is promising. Their bullpen sucks of course…so if it is tied up around the 7th inning I expect some pinch hitters and 12 runs.

I still think that second tier team can beat them…but it is Sept. 11th and with the big thing the Yankees will probably do….if they play I bet we see some big names on the field at least for a little bit.

The Orioles ARE that bad. and now without Adam Jones. So basically it is Nick markakis vs. the Yankees.

MLB only reschedules games after the season IF there is no way to play a DH (i.e last game of a series) nor a mutual off-day. That is why you very rarely see it happen. Look how long they waited to play the Nationals game and we had to travel after that game.

There is also no way the Yankees will willingly give up gate money for this game, especially since it will likely be a sell-out with the record and everything.

  18. Giuseppe Franco September 11th, 2009 at 2:19 pm

The Orioles also have the worst road record in the AL (22-46) and have been carrying around their golf, fishing, hunting, and vacation magazines/brochures for two months.

I was working on 7th avenue in midtown. Friend of mine called me to tell me about the first plane hitting the tower. I was in a conference room watching when the second plane hit.

I’ll never, ever forget that day. Thoughts and prayers to those who lost loved ones in that barbaric act.

  23. Peter R September 11th, 2009 at 2:37 pm

What about Roberts and Pie? Nolan Reimold and Luke Scott? That’s not too bad…

Remember we did lose the series to Washington because we didn’t come to play (and Wang pitched…)

Just saying don’t count them out until we get Mo in…

  24. Terry #1 September 11th, 2009 at 2:37 pm

    You gotta be kidding me:

Napolitano is throwing the first pitch?

    On 9/11?

The woman who’s idea of serious counter-terrorism is to crack down on DHS employees, forcing them to call the 9/11 terrorist attacks “Man-Caused Disasters”?

The woman who thinks that returning US veterans are a greater threat than Islamic terrorists?

The woman who thinks that believing the 9/11 attacks were committed by the Bush administration is just another “perspective”?

    THAT Napolitano?

  25. Giuseppe Franco September 11th, 2009 at 2:40 pm

This isn’t the same Yankee team that it was in June.

This team doesn’t lose to bad teams very often, especially with their big guns scheduled to pitch this weekend.

  26. m shirt September 11th, 2009 at 2:44 pm

Terry stfu and leave your misguided politics out of this. The Yankees are doing something special here.

  27. m shirt September 11th, 2009 at 2:48 pm

    Peter R,

I watched a game from the Sox/O’s series and those guys did nothing. Pie would be a decent NL pinch hitter and Scott.. well, Scott blends right in w/ the rest of ‘em.

Who was the O’s all-star this year?

  28. murphydog September 11th, 2009 at 2:50 pm

    Terry:

Sorry, we’ve tried to be considerate of everybody’s views and thus we’ve concluded that you just can’t do that here. Baseball only, my friend, please. Thanks.

  29. murphydog September 11th, 2009 at 2:52 pm

I heard a 9-11 family member on the radio this morning say that her pain never goes away, it just changes.

    Next thread….

  30. Jones September 11th, 2009 at 2:53 pm

My prayers are with them. God Bless

  31. Gina September 11th, 2009 at 2:56 pm

When they play the recordings from 9/11, it breaks my heart, & I always end up crying. I send my condolences to all those families.

  32. Sweet 27 September 11th, 2009 at 4:35 pm

I expect a fitting ceremony, A record breaking hit, and a Yankee victory tonight.

  33. The Damon-ator September 11th, 2009 at 4:39 pm

The Yankees also announced they will also play God Bless America after every half inning
