Yes, it’s raining

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Sep 11, 2009 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Thanks to my well-honed reportorial skills, I am aware that is raining. However I have no idea what the Yankees are planning for tonight’s game.

My guess is they will do what they always do: Make every effort to play. Once I hear something, I will be sure to update the blog.

But let’s be honest, not even Mother Nature will mess with Derek Jeter. Like every other girl, she’s crazy about the Captain.

————

Triple-A Scranton leads its best-of-five playoff series with Gwinnett 2-0 and hosts the Braves this evening. The K-Man himself, Mr. Kei Igawa, will be on the hill tonight. The Yankees spare no expense when it comes to winning International League games.

Follow the series via Chad Jennings and his excellent blog.

Some major league team would be smart to hire Dave Miley as manager or bench coach. His roster changes every day as players come and go and all he does is win games and put players in a position to succeed.

Meanwhile, if you want a ball signed by the Double-A team, today is your lucky day. Mike Ashmore is giving one away.

There are many comments I am tempted to make, but for the sake of decency and propriety, I can not.

  2. A.B.K September 11th, 2009 at 12:10 pm

If no game tonight, they’ll probably try for a doublehearer tomorrow.
Meanwhile the pitching matchups yells, sweep sweep sweep!

  3. betsy September 11th, 2009 at 12:12 pm

Bodh, I would sit every starter then tonight – I fear what will happen under these conditions. Forget Posada playing especially……

Randy, maybe I see boxing as barbaric becase I don’t have a stomach for blood. I get queasy just thinking about it……I suppose there is an art to it and it does go back to ancient times, but I don’t get what’s so appealing about watching people beat each other to a pulp. I will grant you that football is pretty brutal as well….

  4. R September 11th, 2009 at 12:12 pm

If double header tomorrow. Tonights game would then be rescheduled for tomorrow’s night game im guessing.

    From yankees weather twitter:

Periods of rain are expected throughout the day. Gates are currently scheduled to open on time at 4pm. Please check back for updates.

Selfishly I’m hoping for a rain out tonight as I’m going to game tomorrow and would love to see Jeet’s break the record in person.

Radar/forecast though is calling for rain all day/night.

  7. Largo September 11th, 2009 at 12:16 pm

Fair warning – what follows is not meant seriously.

So if they try to play tonight, Joe G. needs to put out a “don’t get anybody hurt in the rain” lineup.

The way I see it, one regular has to play in the field, and one has to DH. My proposal is to rotate the DH spot one at bat apiece to minimize any one regular’s exposure.

    My suggestion:

    Gardner CF
    Pena SS
    Cano 2B
    Jeter/Tex/Arod/Matsui/Posada DH
    Hinske RF
    Duncan LF
    Hairston 3B
    Molina 1B
    Cervalli C

Start Mitre and follow with Dunn, Melancon, Ramirez.

I think its still better than the Orioles lineup.

  8. Jones September 11th, 2009 at 12:18 pm

I hope the Yankees get a win today. My aunt passed away last night & she was a big Yankee fan. & God Bless the families who lost a love one on September 11th.

    Largo…

With me going to the game tomorrow, I like your idea and wouldn’t mind a rain out.

  10. JerryD September 11th, 2009 at 12:20 pm

Pete, You read my mind about Dave Miley. The same with Tony Franklin. Both of them do a great job despite the constantly changing rosters at Scranton and Trenton. Didn’t Miley used to manage the Reds? Best, Jerry

Congratulations to Jeter on this milestone! What a class act!

LAD are only 2 games ahead of the Rockies.
Rockies are on a 7 game winning streak.
Torre’s team may fall to the wild card, now that the poison team killer (Manny)is back.

  13. Andrew GTLU Bronze Medalist September 11th, 2009 at 12:22 pm

Largo I agree that that team could probably still beat the Orioles.

    Largo,

Can’t have Cano on the field in these conditions.

  15. ditmars1929 September 11th, 2009 at 12:25 pm

Andrew, my 7 year-old’s team could give the O’s a run for their money. :-)

  16. Andrew GTLU Bronze Medalist September 11th, 2009 at 12:28 pm

Especially without Jones, the O’s are truly a sad state of affairs, so I like your 7 year old’s chances, ditmars. Not even Aubrey Huff around anymore for Yankees fans to hate on to add a little juice to the opposition.

    Bod –

Unless I’m missing someone, you need one regular in the field (unless Michael Dunn wants to play 2B lefthanded).

I think you have to balance 2 questions – (1) who is more likely to get hurt vs. (2) who can you most afford to lose?

I figured Cano was least likely to get hurt. I suppose if you don’t mind putting Melky out there you could put Hinske at 3B, Hairston at SS, Pena at 2B and Melky in the OF somewhere.

This is kind of fun – I wish they would actually do something like this. Would remind me of the old days watching the 68 and 69 Yankees.

  19. bodhisattva - Destiny Wears Pinstripes September 11th, 2009 at 12:29 pm

Make fun of the Orioles – they are woeful – but I am interested in seeing Tillman and Matusz pitch. Can’t remember the last time I looked forward to seeing what a Baltimore starter had.

  20. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Montero Fanaticus Primus September 11th, 2009 at 12:30 pm

Largo: The Yankees have the luxury of being able to afford to do that.

  21. bodhisattva - Destiny Wears Pinstripes September 11th, 2009 at 12:31 pm

I’d put Swisher in RF and move Hinske to 3B, Hairston to 2B.

Swisher’s would not get injured, he’d just blend with the elements and come up smiling.

All home-grown line-up needs one more player for OF or 1b
    Jorge Vasquez!

    Jeter SS
    Melky LF
    Cano 2B
    Posada DH
    Duncan 1b
    Pena 3b
    Cervelli C
    Gardner CF

  25. William Buckner September 11th, 2009 at 12:36 pm

I don’t think Jeter would sit to start a game now, even if you told him there would be mines in the field.

He might leave early, but if this game is played, he’s staying for 3 AB’s.

  26. Andrew GTLU Bronze Medalist September 11th, 2009 at 12:38 pm

Tillman and Matusz back to back will definitely be interesting. It is good to see the O’s building back their pitching staff after so many years of having nothing in the way of starting pitching talent. I said it earlier, getting Tillman and Adam Jones in that Bedard trade is still looking like one of the more lopsided moves in recent memory.

Since I’m very bored at work today.

Further research shows that the only position player on the 40 man roster not currently with the Yankees is Miranda. Assuming you could get him to New York through the rain in time for the game, you could put him at 1B, move Molina to 3B, Hairston to SS, Pena to 2B. That gets Cano off the field.

Amazingly, that defensive lineup is not all that bad up the middle (Cervalli,Hairston,Pena,Gardner). We won’t talk about 3B and LF, though.

  29. bodhisattva - Destiny Wears Pinstripes September 11th, 2009 at 12:39 pm

    Jeter DH’s in that lineup.

He gets his hit, Girardi takes him out.

    ======

Tillman does seem to have a nice repertoire, and I have been impressed with Matusz CB.

That was a heist – a CF for the ages and a young starter with 3 good pitches.

I remember when Jim Palmer, lamenting the state of pitching for the Orioles, said: “We’re going to get our pitching back – you wait and see.”

There was a great deal of emotion in his voice. For those of us who remember when the O’s were a pitching power, it somehow doesn’t seem right what they’ve become.

It wouldn’t be entirely accurate to say I’m looking forward to them being restored to an AL pitching power, but from a pure baseball point of view, I wouldn’t mind seeing them develop some good young arms.

I kinda hope they don’t play tonight, either. I just shudder to think of anyone slipping or sliding or losing a bat or whatever in this weather. We’ve (they’ve) come so far…

I, like bodhi, live in north Central NJ. We were supposed to have our pool closed today. They called and cancelled because, “the guys are drenched.” We wanted to close the pool this early because we had a feeling the leaves were going to fall early this season. Guess what? We were two days too late, even if they had been able to close it today. The pool is rapidly filling with leaves violently shaken loose by the whipping wind.

It’s not a fit day out for anyone, not even baseball players!

  45. woodisgood September 11th, 2009 at 12:56 pm

I have to tell you, folks…if tonight’s game gets rained out, I believe in this case they’re going to make it tomorrow’s day game, and push the 1 p.m. game to the evening. Whenever something momentus like tonight’s possibility, the Yankees make sure those people who specifically get this game have the chance to still see history. It’s happened in the past….

    They will play tonight.

No team wants to play doubleheaders this late in the season (especially since they just played one earlier this week) and they certainly don’t want to be going to work on an off day.

They were supposed to have a lot of issues getting games in the weekend of the ChiSox series and they predictably ended up playing through it.

Right, but Opening Day is an event in itself, so that would make sense that they would preserve that.

I would be overjoyed if you were correct, as I have better seats tonight and would love to blow off the night game, if Jeter does it in the day game. But I dare not wish…

  55. Doreen September 11th, 2009 at 1:08 pm

Perhaps, the weather being fickle, the rain tonight will be of the drizzle, annoyance variety. Also, I have to remember that the weather in my neck of the woods often has no connection whatsoever to the weather in the Bronx. As long as it’s not doing there tonight what it’s been doing here on and off so far today, they’ll probably play the game, on second thought.

    ——

Thoughts of the day are with all of those whose lives were lost, and their loved ones and friends, in the 9/11 attacks. That day and all those people will never be forgotten. Not ever. And not a day goes by where there isn’t some reminder, whether it’s driving past the landfill on Staten Island on the way to bringing my daughter to school in LI, or visiting my family in Bayonne and missing the sight of the skyline I always admired, or crossing over the NJ Turnpike at exit 8A and having the vision refreshed of emergency vehicles travelling toward NYC – dozens of them – and most poignant of all, driving past the home of my neighbor whose husband perished that day, and the blessings of another neighbor who was spared, because having lived through the original early 90′s attempt to destroy the towers he and his coworkers did not hesitate to immediately evacuate despite instructions to the contrary.

    God Bless.

The followers of the Trenton Thunder are going to enjoy watching Laird and Romine mash Eastern League pitchers next season. The two guys along with Luis Nunez and Damon Sublett are going to provide a lot of firepower.

The first few times we went, we only went because it was a Yankees farm team, it was close, and it was a night out. Back in the 50′s if the Yankees had clinched (which was almost always), Stengel would play an ‘alternate’ line-up on the last day of the season. This might include Mantle at SS, Berra at 3B, etc. It was great fun.

You’re very welcom, Doreen. Next year’s Trenton team is going to be a lot different than this year. The pitching rotation may not be as deep as this year’s team, but, the bullpen is deep and their offense will probably be among the best in the league.

  68. Peter R September 11th, 2009 at 1:43 pm

Don’t underestimate the O’s. They may suck compared to the AL East but they are not THAT bad. Especially with a young pitcher on the mound…Yankees tend to rack up a bunch of zeros with younger pitchers with only a little bit of tape to watch. Their offense is pretty decent and their starting pitching while young, is promising. Their bullpen sucks of course…so if it is tied up around the 7th inning I expect some pinch hitters and 12 runs.

I still think that second tier team can beat them…but it is Sept. 11th and with the big thing the Yankees will probably do….if they play I bet we see some big names on the field at least for a little bit.
