Kennedy activated, optioned and starts
Here is some unexpected good news: Ian Kennedy pitched in a game tonight.
The Yankees activated Kennedy off the minor-league disabled list today and placed him on the roster of Single-A Tampa. He started against Charlotte in Game 1 of the Florida State League championship series.
IPK went two scoreless innings, allowing one hit and recording a strikeout. Ian is coming back in stages after having surgery to remove an aneurysm from his shoulder in May. He is ticketed for the Arizona Fall League but any innings he can get now will help him next season.
The Yankees could theoretically have Ian next pitch for Scranton in the International League championship series next week, assuming Scranton advances. Scranton can advance tonight and leads Gwinnett 2-0 in the third inning.

Thanks to Chad Jennings for the info.

What great news! Good luck IPK! Continued quick healing.
Anyone think he has any chance of coming to the Bronx? He is on the forty man roster.
Ipk is fun to watch, looking forward to him realistically next yr in Bronx ..his personality will fit well with joba, hah!
Wow, that’s fantastic news…….I’m so happy for Ian. I’m eager to see how he does in the AFL…….and hopeful that he can help us next year.
Carve em up IPK!!!!!!!!
My boy Ian is on the comeback trail….I plan on flying out to see him in Arizona this Autumn…….I’ve known him since he was 11 years old……He’s beaten my teams at every level, from Little League to Connie Mack……His injury just compounded the Wang injury…..
in other good minor league pitching news
Z-mac is currently making his AAA debut and doing very well
4ip 4 hits 0 runs 0 walks 2 k’s
Scranton currently leads 3-0 and they have the bases loaded with 0 outs
ajax 1 for 2 with a rbi single
Didn’t see this coming. Great news
Good news regarding IPK
If The Yanks resign Wang, The will have a lot of pitching depth going into next year. Not nearly as much as Boston this year though.
looks like the SWB Yanks are gonna move on to the finals
7-0 in the bottom of the 4th
Terrific news, Pete. And not just for the Ws and Ls he represents to the Yankees. Terrific for Kennedy.
Pat M – you really have known IPK for that long? Little league and such? That must be a great feeling.
Wow, Pat M – you’ve known Ian since he was 11? Phil is practically a stranger to you, lol, having only known him since he was 15……
Sox six games back in the loss column.
Both kids played Youth Baseball and that’s how I know them….Ian particulary because he knocked both my Little League ( regular season ) and then my All-Star team out of the district finals in 1997…..He’s from Huntington Beach, so I’ve coached vs. him at every level…..Let me tell you, Ian as a 12 year old hit the glove and could pitch to all 4 quadrants……His best pitch back then was his circle change….Phil was pure heat with movement….I recall a Connie Mack game and as I was walking to the 3rd base coach’s box and watched him warmup….I got as close to the batters box as I could, and I could see the late movement on his fastball…..He was 17 and still had his Senior year awaiting him…….Great talent
Tampa Yanks lead 5-2 with 2 outs in the top of the 9th inning in the first game of the best of 5 championship. Brandon Laird is 2-4 with an RBI and a steal. Luis Nunez has a 2-4 night with 2 doubles, 1 RBI and two runs scored.

Pete,
How did the Girardi’s fundraiser go today?

Scranton leads 7-2 after 4 and a half innings. McAllister has 5 innings, 7 hits 2 runs earned, 0 walks, 3 strikeouts.
Jackson is 1-2 with a walk and an RBI. Miranda and Guzman are 2-3 with 2 RBI. Miranda also has a double.
Tampa won 5-2.
The difference is, young Ian Kennedy had to carpool to those youth baseball games, while Young Master Philip was chauffered by staff… you don’t get tough in the back of a limo.
Pat M, thanks for the memories – they make for wonderful reading!
GB, thanks for the updates. The big club had a rough day, but our kids are certainly doing well!
Staten Island has a 5-1 lead in the championship round, 5-1 with 1 out in the top of the 9th inning.

i think IPK will play a fairly large roll on this team next year at some point…it might not be to start the season…but at some point next year the yankees are going to call on IPK to win games and pitch well at the major league level. and this time…he really needs to answer the bell!
Good luck ian patrick kennedy!
You’re most welcome, Betsy. All three teams lead in the best of 5 series, though, I think Staten Island plats best of three…not sure.
Very funny Nick in SF……Huntington Beach I suppose is middle class Orange County…. 200,000 annual family income is acout the average in The OC…Young Master Phil is from the Foothill area of Tustin….I think Lemopn Heights, where the average Homes are in the 4 million range…..
Pat m , thanks for great insight..
Nick sf, limo or pickup, you can’t stop natural talent.. At end of day, most great players ” just have it”.
I have no lack of faith in Master Philip… I see him on top of our rotation for years to come.
As for AJ Burnett, while there are no alternate-universe windows to peer through, I feel our squad would be worse off had he not been signed. Just hope that he gets back into a groove by October… what else can you do?
More worrisome is that someone impersonated commenter m in the game thread:
“Wang will also be back at some point…”
“Everyone needs to put their crystal balls away because they’re useless right now.”
Which was the real m?
Nick
Mother’s intuition at use with Wang. No crystal ball necessary.
Great news for Ian. I wish him well. Maybe we’ll see up back up in the big leagues in 2011. (assuming not 2010 because he wouldn’t have innings)
Nick in SF, Just as we said before, come 2011, AJ Burnett will be the best # 4 pitcher in baseball….And he’ll be the highest paid as well…….USC is putting the slug to me today…..I won on UCLA & Houston, but I loaded up on the Trojans, so today could be a wash if things don’t change in Columbus….I did parlay The Bruins to The Cal Bears of Berkley
