Torre to Jeter: OMG U R gr8, ttyl

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Sep 12, 2009 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Joe Torre told reporters in San Francisco tonight that he texted Derek Jeter to congratulate him for breaking the Yankees hits record.

“I communicated with him. I didn’t call him,” Torre said. “I heard back. I texted him. That’s his favorite thing. I’ve got to get into that young stuff.

“He’s a special kid. The person he is, to me, means a great deal. That’s really something to be proud of, the respect he has for the game and his teammates. He’s a leader but not that ‘rah, rah.’ He’s a lot of things in that clubhouse. His consistency, if you’re a manager, you count on (it). … Just the tenacity, the determination. He’s not afraid to win.”

A Dodgers-Yankees World Series would something to see, wouldn’t it?

Dodgers Vs Yankees would be great

    re-post:

I have no lack of faith in Master Philip… I see him on top of our rotation for years to come.

As for AJ Burnett, while there are no alternate-universe windows to peer through, I feel our squad would be worse off had he not been signed. Just hope that he gets back into a groove by October… what else can you do?

More worrisome is that someone impersonated commenter m in the game thread:

“Wang will also be back at some point…”

“Everyone needs to put their crystal balls away because they’re useless right now.”

    Which was the real m?

He would call him Mr. Torre.

Probably in the minority here, but I don’t think I have the stomach for the melodrama that would accompany a Yankee/Dodger World Series.

Although, from a baseball writers standpoint that would probably be Christmas coming early so good luck with that

  8. Nick in SF September 12th, 2009 at 10:27 pm

Yankees vs. Red Sox then Yankees vs. Dodgers.

    Tension city! Bring it on!

  9. jennifer September 12th, 2009 at 10:27 pm

    Erica. I don’t either.

  10. Doreen September 12th, 2009 at 10:29 pm

    Erica & Jennifer,

    I am in total agreement.

Is there any matchup that doesn’t contain some side story that will become a sideshow?

    Doreen-

If I had to pick my poison (from the avoiding a baseball sideshow circus point of view only), I would prefer the Pedro returns to torment the Yankees much more than the Joe Torre/Manny return to torment the Yankees story.

I don’t ever want to see Manny face the Yankees again. Long live Manny in the NL

Nick in SF, Are you on the USC game ??? I’m growing concerned…All my winnings ( UCLA, Houston & Cal-Berkley ) are riding on the Trojans…..

  17. braden September 12th, 2009 at 10:36 pm

Sawx just did to Rays, what Orioles did to the Yankees.
They peppered Wade Davis with 8 runs in the 3rd,and knocked him out of the game,in 2.2 innings men on base, and 71 pitches.4th inning brings another run, 9-0 Sawx.

I am not certain, but I am 99% sure the Yankees are due to face the Dodgers next year at the Stadium during interleague. I can certainly wait until then to see Manny playing. Hopefully, the Bronx faithful feel like booing that day

  19. Nick in SF September 12th, 2009 at 10:39 pm

Pat M, I don’t have any action on the SC game, I just want to seen them come into Berkeley undefeated in early October… unlike some of the lovely ladies of LoHud, I enjoy high stakes confrontation.

Wang is definitely one of the kids. Not sure about Cashman. It would explain how she used to know all the Teddy stories.

Speaking of which, Teddy has been awful quiet this year. Is he living with Hank now instead of the Cashman’s?

Not sure. I will be getting there late on the 30th and only staying 3 nights. I guess I am looking for any great restaurant ideas/things to do. I am a gambler so thats my favorite activity. I think we are seeing Bette Midler on NYE. It’s going to be too cold New Years for sitting pool side (not that I really like doing that anyway, I am too restless for relaxing).

Erica: my last trip to Vegas was short one, a round of golf and time at the sportsbooks and some at the tables… nothing too incredible… I don’t care about the shows, the fanciest meal we had was steak at Gallaghers at New York, New York. I might not be much help to you. :(

Who is gonna be our playoff 4th starter?

  44. m September 12th, 2009 at 11:07 pm

What a weird ending to the Williams/Clijsters match.

I didn’t see the foot fault, but Serena had no business going off on that line judge.

  45. Laura September 12th, 2009 at 11:09 pm

“I didn’t see the foot fault, but Serena had no business going off on that line judge.”

Both she and Venus had trouble with foot faults during this Open and took exception to it. It was clear that Serena was upset with her own play. She just lost control and took it out on the lines person.

  46. m September 12th, 2009 at 11:12 pm

    Laura,

Did you see a foot fault?

  47. Laura September 12th, 2009 at 11:13 pm

“Did you see a foot fault?”

It didn’t look like she foot faulted to me, but what do I know. This is going to be a big deal tomorrow. People are always looking for a reason to hate on Serena. Now, she’s really given them one.

  48. The Damon-ator September 12th, 2009 at 11:14 pm

it’d almost be worth seeing the Dodgers carry Joe off the field at Yankee Stadium and stick it to the ownership after how they ran the man out of town.

  49. Laura September 12th, 2009 at 11:14 pm

“it’d almost be worth seeing the Dodgers carry Joe off the field at Yankee Stadium and stick it to the ownership after how they ran the man out of town.”

Torre needed to go. His time here was up.

  50. m September 12th, 2009 at 11:15 pm

    Laura,

Really? I don’t think people are looking to hate on her. I think the American public has finally embraced her and the sister. (thanks in most part to the ineptitude of the American men)

I am surprised, though, at the amount of support that Clijsters got, though. I know she’s a good comeback story, but c’mon. Gotta cheer for the American at the US Open.

  51. Nicholas September 12th, 2009 at 11:16 pm

“it’d almost be worth seeing the Dodgers carry Joe off the field at Yankee Stadium and stick it to the ownership after how they ran the man out of town.”

Agree. That would just be sitting. Hope it happens.

  52. m September 12th, 2009 at 11:17 pm

Oh, Lord. There’s no way to justify that statement, Damon-ator.

  53. Laura September 12th, 2009 at 11:18 pm

“I am surprised, though, at the amount of support that Clijsters got, though. I know she’s a good comeback story, but c’mon. Gotta cheer for the American at the US Open.”

Clijsters is married to an American guy so people are giving her a pass. She’s also a very likable girl; she’s always been popular.

As for people supporting Serena, I follow tennis just as much as I follow baseball and I can tell you that there is still a lot of Serena/Venus hatred out there.

Dodgers are flying under the radar

They have the 2nd best offense in the NL, including the postseason king Manny

They have Billingsly-Kershaw-Wolf-Kuroda in the rotation.

They have an 8th-9th of Broxton-Sherill. Sherill was an AL East closer, and he is setting up for them.

Plus they have the best manager in baseball.

They are set up perfectly for October. I think they match up well with us as well.

  55. Nick in SF September 12th, 2009 at 11:20 pm

Pat M: you need points or just a win?

  56. Pat M. September 12th, 2009 at 11:22 pm

The Dodgers are a very well balanced ball club…They’ve endored injuries to their rotation but I still think they’re the team to beat in the NL….Great depth as well….Nick I’m sweating this game out…..

  57. Laura September 12th, 2009 at 11:23 pm

“Plus they have the best manager in baseball.”

LOL! Torre the best manager in baseball? Scott Proctor and any other guy with a bum arm that he’s ruined would tend to disagree. Torre is the luckiest manager in baseball. When the Mgr of the Year awards are handed out when the season is over, I guarantee you that he won’t win for the NL.

    Erica

On my last trip, had dinner at Olives (great Mediteranean food) in the Bellagio and Gordon Biersch (microbrew) on Paradise.

Get off the strip and go to downtown Vegas for a different casino experience and a more local restaurant.

Sightsee the hotels on the strip. Everyone of them has their own personality and display or attraction you can see.

You can rent a car and do a side trip to Hoover Dam if that interests you at all. It’s a quick drive and a way to spend a morning. We did a day trip to the Grand Canyon 2 years ago but since you are only there 3 days might not be most effective use of your time.

A few years ago we went to Fly Away. You put on a parachute suit and get in a silo with an airplane engine at the bottom of it. You step in and the current from the engine lets you fly. Best done prior to visiting the microbrew.

I saw Matt Barkley play in the ESPN Under Armor game back in January an he was clearly the best QB on the field that day out of about a dozen of the most highly recruited high school QBs in the country.

Although I’m not surprised he had a great game. I am surprised that USC is putting all their hopes on a true freshman.

USC always seems to win the big games but they are prone to overlooking lesser opponents and getting upset by teams they should beat handily.

But I’m a huge Michigan fan so I’m ecstatic about my boys from Ann Arbor sticking it to Notre Dame with a true freshman of their own.

I just hope ND sticks with Charlie Weis as coach for many years to come. I’d like to see them sink a little further over the next several years.

    —————-

    Oh, absolutely.

I’m a college football nut as well and I pay very close attention to high school recruiting.

I knew as soon as Forcier committed last fall that he was going to be an enormous upgrade from what they had before. He also enrolled early (in January) while most kids his age are thinking about their senior prom.

I watched the Michigan spring game back in April and I could see that he was polished far beyond his years.

He’s not the biggest kid, flashiest kid, or most athletic kid (especially in that type of offense), but he might be one of the smartest and best decision-makers who is not going to make a ton of mistakes.

I’m not ready to hand him a Heisman Trophy by any means, but Forcier is going to be a college star as long as he stays healthy.

  88. Nick in SF September 12th, 2009 at 11:59 pm

  89. tampayank September 13th, 2009 at 12:06 am

Ohio State and ND are always overated…can’t beat programs w speed like USC, Florida, etc ND will have a tough time getting back no matter who is the coach, the best recruits don’t want to play in Indiana

A dodgers-yanks world series would bring in good ratings

  91. Giuseppe Franco September 13th, 2009 at 12:17 am

Notre Dame always gets a ton of blue chip recruits.

They have a Top 10 recruiting class almost every year. And they beat out USC for the top high school linebacker in the country back in February.

Talent is not ND’s problem at all. It’s their coaching.

  92. Pat M. September 13th, 2009 at 12:22 am

Nick in SF, I like the Bears tomorrow…..Looking at The Cardinals as well…….You have anything ????

  93. Tunnel Man September 13th, 2009 at 12:24 am

    Fire Jim Tressel!

Right before the end of the first half, the announces both cautioned Tressel to run out the clock and not give USC the ball with 2 minutes on the clock. They didn’t listen. USC got the ball and marched it down, zip-do-duah-day for a field goal, the very three points the buckeyes lost by.

    what donkey poo.

They just called the Boston game because of the rain delay, even though they only played 5 1/2 innings.

Yet last night at this very hour, the yanks had to restart their game.

I haven’t studied the board, too busy enjoying Cal today. The open of the NFL season scares me a bit, I never feel like I know what teams will be showing up. The Cardinals sound good, but will the Niners be rallying around their Crabtree-less coach? Do the Cards have a Super Bowl hangover?

I kind of like the Pack over the Bears, hmmmmm…. I also like our New York Football Giants…. it will not make me smile much but I think I like the Eagles at Carolina… the Panthers have let me down many times… Similarly, the Cowboys will probably do well in Tampa….

I’m really not sensing any Notre Dame love from anyone. As a Notre Dame fan, I sincerely hope that I don’t have to worry about Weis’s cruddy decision-making much longer.

And for those asking, Clijsters was getting cheered because she’s a very popular player with players and fans alike. She’s well known for being a class act, nice to see her knock off Serena. :)

I’m rooting for Dodgers-Yankees series, have been for a month now. Barring that, a Giants-Yankees could be interesting. (another ex-NY team)

Why all the rap about football on a baseball blog? It’s bad enuf when ESPN does it during our games.
