Triple-A Scranton beat Gwinnett 12-3 tonight to win the best-of-five first round of the International League playoffs in four games.

Zach McAllister allowed three runs in 5.1 innings in his first AAA game. Kevin Russo drove in three runs.

Scranton will play the Durham-Louisville winner for the IL title. The series is tied 2-2 with the final on Sunday afternoon.

Also, Tampa won Game 1 of the Florida State League championship series. The Yankees beat Charlotte 5-2. That’s a best-of-five series.

Alright, good news – thanks, Pete!

  2. jennifer September 13th, 2009 at 12:34 am

    Congrats to the AAA team.

  3. Nick in SF September 13th, 2009 at 12:36 am

    re-post for Pat M:

I haven’t studied the board, too busy enjoying Cal today. The open of the NFL season scares me a bit, I never feel like I know what teams will be showing up. The Cardinals sound good, but will the Niners be rallying around their Crabtree-less coach? Do the Cards have a Super Bowl hangover?

I kind of like the Pack over the Bears, hmmmmm…. I also like our New York Football Giants…. it will not make me smile much but I think I like the Eagles at Carolina… the Panthers have let me down many times… Similarly, the Cowboys will probably do well in Tampa….

  4. Pel (a/k/a Bart Simpson) September 13th, 2009 at 12:36 am

Zach’s AAA debut was a playoff game?

    Awesome.

Talk about rising to the occasion.

  5. dennis-Costanza September 13th, 2009 at 12:38 am

    Over in Carolina-Philly.

  6. Tunnel Man September 13th, 2009 at 12:38 am

    what donkey poo.

They just called the Boston game because of the rain delay, even though they only played 5 1/2 innings.

Yet last night at this very hour, the yanks had to restart their game.

I’m starting to see what Jim Pir-One has been talking about.

  7. Nick in SF September 13th, 2009 at 12:38 am

Pel, you didn’t happen to capture any audio from today’s broadcast, did you?

  8. Nick in SF September 13th, 2009 at 12:40 am

    dennis, you have over-itis?

  9. dennis-Costanza September 13th, 2009 at 12:42 am

    Nick-

Do you like to tease lines?

    -dennis

  10. Pel (a/k/a Bart Simpson) September 13th, 2009 at 12:44 am

    >Pel, you didn’t happen to capture any audio from
    >today’s broadcast, did you?

I bailed immediately after the GS.

As soon as Michael Kay said “See Ya!”, I picked up the remote, said “See Ya!”, and went for a walk.

  11. Nick in SF September 13th, 2009 at 12:45 am

I sometimes do, yes. Unfortunately, teasing is not a nice thing to do and is often punished.

  12. Nick in SF September 13th, 2009 at 12:46 am

Pel, that’s too bad, as both Kay and Leiter addressed a popular LoHud topic involving AJ and the catching corps. Oh well.

  13. Fist September 13th, 2009 at 12:49 am

Maybe AJ shouldn’t use a catcher at all.

    Can’t hurt.

  14. dennis-Costanza September 13th, 2009 at 12:51 am

    LOL.

Good day for CAL and BC. My lock of the NFL week is the over in Car/Phil. I have some dough to play around with after a great day today. Total is 43.5.

    Silver- 16.77

  15. Pat M. September 13th, 2009 at 12:53 am

Nick in SF & Dennis, The first few weeks of the NFL, I tend to play pretty soft….Dennis I have the Eagle /Pather ganme @ 43 1/2….

  16. Sid September 13th, 2009 at 12:59 am

    I have a lot riding on Seahawks/Rams

I just wish it wasn’t at the same time as Giants/Skins… :(

  17. Nick in SF September 13th, 2009 at 1:01 am

So you’re saying that if I tease that down to, say, 35.5, then I can bet the ranch on it? If I had a ranch? :(

I’ve got a fever and the only cure is more points…

  18. Al September 13th, 2009 at 1:08 am

Mike Francessa’s “NFL Now” program now simulcasted on YES from 9-12 every sunday

  19. dennis-Costanza September 13th, 2009 at 1:08 am

A great CFB Saturday for me usually leads to a hubris-esque NFL Sunday and you know how that goes…

Please cheer for points in the Car/Phily game.

    AL East Solidarity.

  20. Nick in SF September 13th, 2009 at 1:16 am

I will buy into a little of that so I can really throw my heart into it. Trust in DeSean.

  21. Pat M. September 13th, 2009 at 1:17 am

Dennis-Costanza….I’m going to dabble a little on that Philly game……As for Savannah, I’m still waiting for a firm commitment on that …..It’s a Cadillac event in Hilton Head…..It also calls for a few rounds of golf as well……I’m far from being cleared from my Ortho-pod to hit the links…..So I maybe replaced by someone who will play….I’ll know in about 2 weeks time…..Savannah is one of my favorite destinations in this country….No summers, just like no more NYC in the winters…..I had my fill growing up there….

  22. dennis-Costanza September 13th, 2009 at 1:20 am

Ahhh. A Cal Bear in Mr. Jackson! Give me your NFL pick of the day and I will be vested.

    Thanks.

    -dennis

  23. Nick in SF September 13th, 2009 at 1:25 am

dennis, for my pick I am going to go with both my heart and my apparel. I am currently wearing a shirt that reads:

    18-1

    PERFECT NO MORE

    ny

    XLII CHAMPIONS

  24. dennis-Costanza September 13th, 2009 at 1:29 am

    PatM.

I agree. That is why Amy and I spend the summer and fall in in Maine.

Give me your pick of the day manyana and I will make a play.

    Thanks in advance.

  25. Pat M. September 13th, 2009 at 1:30 am

Dennis, I really liked the Bears plus the 4, however Nick in SF is going the other way, so I have to go back and re-read my notes……Packer at Green Bay is always tough……However I like Cutler to establish himself in the old Black and Blue Division…..Amake a staement type game…..Kurt Warner is 9-1 lifetime vs the 49er’s, who I think are going to be the most improved team in the NFL this season…..That being said, even with the 0-4 preseason record, Cardinals may have thier way with SF

  26. Nick in SF September 13th, 2009 at 1:30 am

(I wouldn’t go heavy against Aaron Rodgers)

  27. dennis-Costanza September 13th, 2009 at 1:32 am

    Nick.

Thanks for the dig. I hope the Burrito place is closed and you are stuck with Ramen Noodles without your Coke.

    Cheers.

    -dennis

  28. Nick in SF September 13th, 2009 at 1:34 am

 I’ll go to my grave short one can of Coke.

Just for that outburst I should trump the so-so burrito with some Katana-ya ramen.

  29. dennis-Costanza September 13th, 2009 at 1:34 am

    Pat M.

Done. Bears tomorrow eve. I will take it. Cutler’s first start as a Bear. Thanks.

    -dennis

  30. dennis-Costanza September 13th, 2009 at 1:35 am

    LOL.

  31. Pat M. September 13th, 2009 at 1:40 am

Dennis, You understand we’re going vs. Nick ” The Greek ” in SF…..Historically over the past 3 years or so, he and I are pretty much on the same page across the board regardless of the sport….I must admit though, I steer clear of European Futball…..He always nails it….

  32. dennis-Costanza September 13th, 2009 at 1:44 am

    Pat M.

I know. However, he is betting on Rodgers a Cal Bear and his PAC 10 bias. I agree though, Nick is good against the line. I still like the Bears getting 4.

    -dennis

  33. Pat M. September 13th, 2009 at 1:50 am

Well I’m a longtime NY Jet fan since the days of Joe Willie Namath and it’s on tomorrow morning here in So. Cal……So of course I’ll touch that game with my heart….Although I do expect them to be in the hunt for a playoff spot if they can survive the first few weeks of a killer schedule……

  34. Nick in SF September 13th, 2009 at 1:52 am

My secret is that I try to only give out winners and keep the losers to myself… I have had to sell half of my Columbus Clippers bobblehead collection to cover my losses… if tomorrow goes badly I will have to sell my Tibetan Mastiff puppy, something I am loathe to do for a number of reasons… goodnight AL Easterners.

  35. Truthiness September 13th, 2009 at 2:04 am

I hope we don’t blow this lead. Our pitching does not give me confidence. Hard to win a pennant with only one good starter.

  36. Yeah September 13th, 2009 at 4:24 am

I have yet to understand why ERA is still a widely used metric. I mean, I get that in the old days, pitchers threw tons of complete games. But nowadays, I would imagine that the salient statistics–at least as far as predictive power go–would be something more like the following: A five- or ten-game running average of earned runs per appearance, and a five- or ten-game running average of innings per appearance.

Burnett’s 5GERPA and 5GIPA going into today’s game were 4.4 and 6.0, respectively, meaning that you might reasonably have expected him to go six and give up four or five runs. He ended up going seven and giving up six. Not far off.

CC’s current 5GERPA is 1.8, and his 5GIPA is a little over 7.0. His 10GERPA is 2.3, and his 10GIPA is a little over 7.0. I wouldn’t be one bit surprised if he goes seven tomorrow, giving up two or three.

  37. jump September 13th, 2009 at 6:21 am

    Go Scranton.

  38. Jay September 13th, 2009 at 9:19 am

Pete no love for the boys in Staten Island? They advanced to the NY-Penn League finals last night. Game 1 in SI tomorrow night.

  39. bodhisattva - Destiny Wears Pinstripes September 13th, 2009 at 9:59 am

    Jay,

    Were you there?

What a great little ballpark. Finally got a look at Angellini, Medchill, Zoilo Almonte, Paredes.

The home team was crisp, but some of the plays by Lowell – or lack of them – really drive home that you’re watching Low A ball, lol.

  40. Nick in SF September 14th, 2009 at 6:48 pm

    It’s -very- exciting!
